"Agreed! That is quite the scarf! So you would be Agdon Longscarf, prince of Prismeer? Soo nice to meet you! Could you show us how to get to the stump? We seem to be having some difficulties."
Resmae knows they are probably in trouble with this group, but figured it doesn't hurt to ask.
Chapley looks the singing bunny up and down and says, "Oh boy, I hate to point it out, but you accidentally rhymed like a whole bunch of times just now. That's really embarrassing for you. Totally undercut the weight of your threatening banter. Let me show you how I would say it."
With that, Chapley lifts his axe in two hand over his head, standing at his full height, towering over his companions. His shoulder bulge and thick veins pop out in his neck. He looks up to the sky and unleashes a bloodcurdling roar.
The brigand you now know is Agdon, is cocky and boastful. He continues to sing, along with others and is darting in and out of you all. Back and forth between the boats and the boardwalk and he is very quick.
Chapley, the spritely harengon comes very close to you. You roar in his face he pokes his in yours. He recoils back. Your backpack wiggles as the cheeky little harengon bounds away laughing nervously.
Bugs watches the annoying Harengon bound around the group and sing. It ignores polite attempts at conversation and seems to mock Chapley. He is annoyed. He didn’t like being mimicked. Kids did that sort of thing. This guy was a bit full of himself.
So as the self-proclaimed notorious thief bounded around the group with his blue scarf flowing behind him Bugs just reached out, grabbed the scarf, braced himself, and give it a good hard yank!
(The following is based on the assumption that the yank worked. My athletics check was crappy, but if Wildred can change it to an 18 or 19 it would pass. If you allow Bugs to use acrobatics and thus his dex skills he would pass on his own. Either way, I’m assuming a pass – if he failed just ignore everything below.)
Bugs watched in pleasure as the rabbit flopped down into the mud.
“No pouting, no moaning and no huffing shall we do.
This rabbit, who twirls and sings his own praises with much ado
A flash of his scarf, he’ll in the mud be flailing.
With a muddy splatter, through the muck his scarf is trailing.
Covered in slime, none think he looks meritorious
But our needs are serious, and we are in need of those who would be valorous!”
Halei stays back while all this plays out and doesn't say anything, waiting to see how the harengon would react, but she's ready to jump in if they attack. She just wishes to know why they are here, and what they want from them. They had Halei and her friends before, what could they possibly want from them now?
Adgon, bounding over to an adjacent skiff, is taken by surprise as Balliol grabs the bright blue and glowing scarf. You watch (as if in slow motion) in amusement as the cocky, scallywag is hurled backward from his landing, twisting and turning, with his mouth open wide with surprise. "Wooooooaaaahhhhh!". Splash! He lands face down in the mud below. Only to be taunted by Baliol's own jaunty tune.
Applause and laughter erupt all around. You are instantly aware of many skiffs around you and closing in, adorn with brigands, who are laughing hysterically at Adgons predicament.
About twenty feet in front of the raised causeway you are standing on is two skiffs, each with three brigands aboard, some of whom are keeled over laughing. One is close behind Adgon. Behind you, about the same distance is another skiff with four brigands aboard. You can also make out more figure-laden boats approaching from behind these.
You hear in the distance a deep and loud fog horn.
Resmae huddles close to Balliol, Sammy nearby as well, she looks up to the teenage harengon, "Well it looks like you amused his friends, nice job. I hope that helps our predicament because we are waaay outnumbered. Not sure what they want?" The small rabbit looks a bit worried as she looks around at all the skiffs holding more and more brigands.
Bugs can't help but grin. "Well, Doc, that got a little messy."
He then looked around at those that were laughing and tried to see how they reacted to the fog horn. Where was it coming from?
"Sometimes a great big scarf is more than a fashion statement. But now we need to get to the stump. Who here can help us do that?"
As he talked Bugs kept a grip on the scarf so that he would have a handhold on the muditorius brigand. But if it looked like the other hare was going to give it a good hard yank he would let go. He had no intention of getting yanked into the mud himself.
The fog horn is coming from the direction of the stump (which is in front of you, about one hundred feet away).
You are standing in a line on the five-foot wide boardwalk (facing NW). The brigands skiffs are closing in on your position. You can now make out more incoming additional boats. Two boats behind the front skiffs and another to your left. You can make out at least six skiffs and nineteen brigands.
The amusement wanes, and a female voice from one of the skiffs demands, "Drop the scarf!"
Aros, Balliol, Halei, Resmae Sammy and Wildred, you recognise the familiar voice as the brigand leader you encountered upon your arrival in Hither. Her silhouette is unmistakable, with two long feathers protruding from her hat.
As she speaks, several bandits raise crossbows and point them directly at you.
Adgon is about eight feet in front of Chapley. Wading in the mud, his scarf trailing back into Balliol's hands and with a skiff right behind him and a brigand leaning down to help him.
Resmae looks around to all the brigands around them. She's happy she has Sammy with her, but there were A LOT. She seems to recognize the one with two feathers, but can't exactly remember why. "Please, what do you want from us? We just want to see Lorna."
"Yeah, friends. I know we didn't get off on the right foot before, but we mean no harm. Let's just talk for a minute, I'm sure we can come to some sort of understanding. Is there something in specific you need from us?" Halei continues, still holding her hands up, giving a small tense smile, and stepping forward just a little, but careful not to move too much in fear of being shot with an arrow.
The skiffs drift slowly closer to you. "You want to see Lorna?" queries one of the brigands next to the black brigand lady, "We might be able to help you with that!"
Many of the harengon make general approval sounds and nod in agreement. "M-hmm", "Oh, Yes", etc.
"Drop the scarf, release our man and let's discuss your options!"
Bugs looks at the boastful bandit leader as he climbs into one of the skiffs. "No problem." Bugs nods towards the muddy Prince of Prismeer and adds, "These long scarfs can be quite tricky. Here you go." He then tosses his end out toward the bandit captain.
Balliol, you release the scarf, "These long scarfs can be quite tricky. Here you go." Agdon, with the help of another, climbs aboard the nearby skiff. Mud up to his waist, he turns and glances daggers your way before the boat he boarded drifts back away from you.
"We'll take you to Lorna!" barks the black-hatted lady.
The boats move in, and three brigands jump onto the causeway—two to your left and one to your right.
Another skiff (H) with the silhouettes of three brigands can be seen approaching from the mangroves in front of you. And yet another (G) pops around the mangroves on your right, behind you.
"Jump aboard!" she calls.
The brigands wielding crossbows remain armed and continue to take aim, while some bat clubs against their hands. All of them scrutinise you menacingly.
Should you choose to jump aboard the skiffs, you are directed to a nearby boat by a pointed weapon. Chapley and Aros, you are led aboard boat E; Halei and Wildred, you are led aboard boat D; Sammy and Resmae, you are led aboard boat C, and Balliol onto boat B.
Halei watches Balliol climb into the skiff, crisis seemingly averted and it seemed they were no longer in immediate danger. That was easier than she thought! She honestly thought it would end in a blood bath. Though still on edge, she lets herself be led onto a skiff, still eyeing the weapons pointed at her. She hoped the brigands might still be willing to talk and answer their questions while they ride.
Bugs nods to the others in the group. If only they had a secret language and could communicate silently through all of this he thought, it would make things much easier. And it might even prevent the loss of a feather or two. He glanced at Blackhat and his red feather. It was probably best that they weren't going to be in the same skiff. And they were going to be in the skiffs. At this point it seemed obvious that going for a ride was their best option. Now he just had to hope they actually ended up meeting Lorna. As he moved into his skiff he was careful not to look directly at the muddiest brigand in Prismeer. Just the thought of it almost brought a wicked grin to his face, but he held it back. He got into the skiff while taking a close look at those who were in it with him.
You resign to your situation and join the brigands aboard their boats, now floating alongside the boardwalk.
Chapley, you step aboard where two brigands, one with a trembling crossbow aimed toward you, and the other skittishly glares at you in a failed attempt to seem menacing. You gently rest the unconscious Aros down on the floor of the skiff. You stand tall, intimidating them more. They timidly usher you to the front of the boat.
Halei and Wildred, you board to a similar scene, a pointed crossbow and a brigand with a club. Less menacing but arguably less dangerous.
Balliol, you find yourself alone on a boat under the pointed crossbow of an exceptionally mean-looking brigand. You being the taller of your race, have seldom seen a harengon taller than yourself outside of Bugglesworth Downs. Today is the exception.
Resmae, you ride atop Sammy as he bounds onto the skiff nearest. With the black-hatted bandit. There is history there, but you can't quite grasp it. Also, a crossbow, too close for comfort, holding aim at you.
The now less cocky Adgon orders the skiffs to follow as he leads you, hopefully to Lorna.
The boats head off in single file into the darkness of the swamp. You appear to be heading towards the stump, as far as you can tell. The swamp waters are deeper here, and there are no longer any causeways around. If you jump, you will end up in the drink.
