Aldheim furrows his brow, 'No, no, the kid might have something. The cargo in that warehouse ain't worth Jack if we can't get in there and I don't wanna risk them spreading to my other warehouses. You have the Duke's authority to deal with the issue, however you want to make that happen, I'm not going to get in your way.'
He looks to Rowan, 'As for you, well, that there warehouse is where I keep my gems and jewels, I created the cat rumor to keep people out, you caught me.' the words drip with sarcasm. 'Lad, without looking at the ledgers, I ain't sure what's in there, I don't micromanage to that level. That being said, if the cats are cleared out, the owner of the cargo comes to collect and some of their gear's missin', well I'll know who to send 'em to talk to, huh?' he fixes you with a cold stare.
Darwin looks up at Aldheim with narrowed eyes, “I’m not sure that is a nice way to talk to people who have come to help”.
He turns his back on Aldheim and starts to walk towards the warehouse, “We must remember that we need to take one of the beasts back to the Duke’s assistant as well, meaning we need to go in, but burning the warehouse down is a good plan B”.
Ida calls to Darwin and Hamish, who have started to walk towards the warehouse "Wait, we need to speak before approaching! Please come make a plan with me?"
She looks at Aldheim and tries to reassure him with "We will do our best not to damage anything in the warehouse or the warehouse itself, but the Duke has asked for one of the creatures to study - do you happen to have a proper trap for us to take in with us? We will not bring it out of the warehouse unless it is trapped and covered for everyone's safety."
Aldheim shrugs to Ida, ignoring Darwin's comment as he did not need to be a master of insight to intuit Rowan's meaning, 'I have some fishing cages kicking around, but that's about it I'm afraid.'
Darwin turns back to Ida with a sigh, "We don't need help from someone who would be smaller than me if it wasn't for his inflated ego!", he says flatly. "Let's just go take a look through the window and see what we can see".
Darwin felt quite protective of his new friends, and really disliked the assumption Ardheim had made of Rowan. Whether it was true or not it was people like this that kept Rowan feeling he had to steal and cheat.
Hamish half turns, looking between Ida and Darwin, then says, "Whatever the plan is, I'm not sure how I can be of help. No real skills other than running. Maybe I can be bait? Then Rowan could launch an ambush?" Even as Hamish said the words, he felt surprised. He barely knew these people, but had lived in a cramped cell with them for a few days. They were kind. Strangely so. And the normal feeling he had of distrust he had towards anyone who offered him help beyond a scrap of bread or a few copper pieces was getting smaller and smaller. He felt he owed them something to repay the kindness they certainly didn't need to give him.
A Raven caws over head and swoops down. It lands on Darwin's shoulder.
To the rest of the party, it sounds like normal bird noises but Darwin hears a voice that he first heard a few days before, lying in the street, right before he was arrested.
'Dear Gnome, I never told you how to use the power, but nevertheless it is quite simple. Simply reach for it and it will be there, but be cautious of these creatures and my power.' the bird then flutters away and perches on the roof of the warehouse.
Ida, you can feel that presence in the corner of your eye, and you know that Peter is watching you, though the others can see nothing.
(Hamish, when you wish to cast a spell on your spell list, at this point I'm going to have it closely linked to his emotional state, which will change after this adventure, so I'm going to need you to write it in a manner that links what he's feeling and what he wants to the spell he casts, though he's not consciously aware he's actually casting yet, obviously)
Darwin's eyes widen a little as the raven lands on his shoulder. He had started to think his meeting with the stranger had been imagined after the blow to his head. So the power was real, or was he still simply delusional? And the warning, that tallied with what Ardheim had told them the exterminator had said. Using magic on these directly might not be the best idea.
He waits for Ida to finish with Ardheim, mulling over Hamish's idea of being bait. "I still think we need to get a look in the window, and if Rowan thinks he can scout more great. Let's see what we can see, and if we do need bait there are safer ways than risking your life Hamish".
Side note, I just sent Darwin a message and it kinda ties into my statement to Hamish. Magic runs off of some power source, as previously mentioned at the beginning, hence why wizards don't exist. Barring sorcerers, casters pull power from somewhere, with it already residing in sorcerors, a well of power, and shape it in their body with their mind or emotions and releasing it, this process is akin to lifting weights with ones mind and is mentally draining. Cantrips are light, simple things that don't require much effort to shape and are repeatable. More complex spells take their toll, hence spell slots.
Does the party approach the warehouse and attempt to find/reach a window?
Seeing Ida still talking to Ardheim, Darwin becomes impatient and walks towards the warehouse. Ida can always catch up, it’s not like he’s going to go inside or anything.
”Coming”, he says to Rowan and Hamish, “We can take a quick look at the warehouse and try and find a window”.
I don't think a perception check is required to find windows, however, all of the windows are up 20 feet off the ground. If you wish to find one that's open, or at least not latched, that will require a perception check.
Darwin moves to the first window he sees and mutters, “Ok, just reach for it he said”. He concentrates on his breathing and reaches inward, feeling a strange warmth. He pulls on the warm feeling, directing it into his right hand. He looks up at the window and wills the feeling next to it, and to his surprise a ghostly translucent hand appears there.
”Well I’ll be”, he mutters and imagines the hand grasping the window and attempting to open it just a crack, to see if it is unlatched…
Rowan, you can't quite tell which windows are unlatched.
The mage hand attempts to open a window and intially it doesn't move but Rowan, you see a shadow skitter across the window, and then suddenly the window comes slightly open.
Ida is trying to help Aldheim locate a decent trap, while also trying to pay attention to what is happening at the warehouse, but she can't see much or hear anything.
Darwin looks to Rowan, "A shadow 20 feet up is concerning. I hate to say this, but maybe we have been a bit hasty. I wonder if Ida can source us a ladder as well as a cage", he says looking far up to the window and shaking his head, knowing there was no way he could climb up there.
"If not, we may just have to walk in the front door"

Hamish nods at Darwin's aside, "It certainly hasn't been an easy life, but that wasn't so bad. No one died, at least."
He listens to the conversation, and blushes a bit, vicariously embarrassed for Rowan, at Aldheim's insinuation.
When Darwin starts to walk away, Hamish looks around sheepishly then follows. This "noam" seems to at least have a sense of a plan or approach.

Mage hand I presume?
