Antonius hefts his crossbow, 'I'll keep an eye on the Priestess.'
'Aye, I'd very much like to find where she's keeping my Hammer and get it back in my possession as soon as possible.' Agnarr says, frowning at the thought of being on guard duty.
Ida moves to follow Darwin to Volen's room to search. "Hamish - do you have the strength to come with us? We should try to stay together as we try to find what we can of our gear, and then we will go outside to see if we can figure out what happened to everyone. Antonius- yell loudly if she stirs."
Hamish nods and rises gingerly, still sore from the battle. "Also, I think I have a good way for us to check outside safely, though it might backfire if there are more orcs out there. I think I can change my face. Like my illusions, but to make me look like someone else."
The party moves down the Northern passage, with Antonius stopping at the old slave pen and pointing his crossbow between the bars of the outter gate. 'I'll keep watch here till you all come back.' he says.
As you enter into Volen's room, your vision is remarkable eased. She has been cultivating a number of bioluminescent fauna and fungi around the space and it wonderfully lit in hues of blue, green and lilac.
You are all familiar with this space, having entered it at least once to empty her chamber pot, which sits alongside her bed against the Northern wall.
On the southern wall there is a desk.
Besides these features, the room would seem bare at casual examination.
Ida steps lightly, she feels like Volen would set up traps for anyone invading her space. They could be physical or some sort of magic with her flora and fungi. She shares that thought with her companions, hoping they will also investigate carefully.
Darwin wanders into the room and takes a glance around, seeing the desk. He wanders over for a closer look. He was sure Volen was careful, either it would be locked, or there would be some secret compartment where she kept things she didn't want found.
When investigating the desk you find a large heavy chest under it with a gleaming lock.
On the desk's surface you find an oval and smooth stone that's surface is almost perfect without flaw except that there is a single rune engraved into one face.
Other items include two single loose leafs of parchment sat opposite each other, an inkwell and quill and a map spread across the desk. The map is clearly of a large area of the continent.
Darwin spots the chest under the desk and sees the stone.
"You think this is how she communicates with whoever is directing her?", he says to the other pointing at the stone but being careful not to touch it just yet.
He then takes a look at the chest, and the lock to see if it is locked and / or trapped.
It's certainly possible. I wish I knew more about the Runes - I wonder if we could remove it to take it to the Duke's chancellor? He may be able to understand it all and it may help avoid more conflict.
"I heard her talking to someone through it when I spied on her once, but could only hear her. If we can figure out how to use it, we could potentially contact whoever is working with her."
Volen seems to have been comfortable enough with the security of a dozen orcs and the other mechanical security factors to not bother with arcane or rogueish techniques.
I'll go switch with Antonius so he can come try to get the lock off. Agnarr- we may need to take that stone and the map/paper with us. Don't touch it, but see if it's able to come off the wood of the desk or if we need to carve it out.
Ida leaves the chamber and goes to Antonius. She tells him they need him for his expertise and she will watch Volen.
Antonius frowns, turns and leaves without another word.
When Hamish touches the runed stone it emits a crackling noise, similar to what we would know as static.
You open the chest and you find the items that were confiscated from you and a few others that were probably confiscated from other prisoners.
Of note, there is a belt that is decorated with dwarven characters, a wand that is exceptional in it's extravagant appearance, an amulet of fine metal with a glowing rune and a cloak of grand material.
Darwin grabs everything from the chest, asking for help if necessary, along with rolling up the map. He looks at the stone emitting static as he does so.
"Maybe wrap that up or drop it in a bag", he suggests before also heading out to the main chamber.

Investigation check: 6
Hamish looks about the room from the entrance but is unsure of what a trap set by an orc would look like.
((Perception 10))
The room seems to be absent of traps or pitfalls to Ida and Hamish
Darwin wanders into the room and takes a glance around, seeing the desk. He wanders over for a closer look. He was sure Volen was careful, either it would be locked, or there would be some secret compartment where she kept things she didn't want found.

"I heard her talking to someone through it when I spied on her once, but could only hear her. If we can figure out how to use it, we could potentially contact whoever is working with her."
You notice no traps on the lock or chest.

Ida leaves the chamber and goes to Antonius. She tells him they need him for his expertise and she will watch Volen.
Darwin looks at the lock, “She didn’t have a key on her, maybe there is a key in the room somewhere”.
He starts to look around the room, starting with the bed.
Investigation: 8+2=10
Agnarr looks at the rock suspiciously and prods it with his Axe, it skitters across the desk.
Antonius returns to the room, 'Alright, where is this lock?' he asks, brandishing his tools.
Darwin finds the key sat under the bed's pillow.
Hamish approaches the desk and tentatively touches the rune stone before lifting it to carry back to the main chamber.
“Aha”, Darwin exclaims as he holds up the key.
”Sorry Antonius, we won’t be needing your services after all”.
He then moves over to the chest and unlocks it, opens it and takes a look inside.
Antonius frowns, turns and leaves without another word.
