As they head over to the Biblioplex, Arvol replies to Aithne. "Umm, I just didn't have much of a lunch. So, I could really use a sandwich!" He is then a little quiet as they walk, not really sure of anything to say. Just before getting to the Biblioplex he abruptly asks, "So how is your studying going for Professor Lang's class? You're probably already prepared for the exam next Friday? I still probably need to study up a bit, so I don't get my 'slaad' mixed up with 'salad'."
Once inside he orders the sandwich special, waiting for it to be prepared, then heads back with Aithne towards the Firejolt Cafe.
"I've read all of the literature Professor Lange recommended to us." Aithne admitted, side-stepping to avoid bumping into another student in the hallway. "Slaad are terrible and fascinating creatures. Did you know that the reproductive cycle of the red slaad requires the use of a host? The poor being is implanted with the slaadi eggs which gradually devour the host body before emergence. It's quite gruesome." Aithne didn't seem to realize that sharing this information in the midst of a cafeteria might be problematic. "If you wanted to study with me for the exam, we could meet in the Biblioplex tonight after I'm finished with my duties?"
Stepping up to the counter, Aithne placed her order. The moment the sandwich was handed to her, she unwrapped it and immediately took a bite, unable to wait until they rejoined the rest of their classmates. She'd practically finished it in its entirety by the time she and Arvol had completed the walk to the Firejolt Cafe to meet up with the others. She waved as they rejoined the rest of the group, still chewing busily. She caught something from the bubbly Rosie about frogs and the Firejolt Cafe, but assumed that would be explained further. At the moment, she was focused on the last bite of her sandwich and the promise of tea and something sweet in the future.
Klok winces at the mention of weird frogs being caught and the plan to race them. He tries to put on his best fake smile and continues into the Firejolt and orders himself a snack and a tea. He takes his food and rejoins Aelyn who is questioning Rosie
Arvol immediately takes up Aithne's offer to study after she works tonight, "I will definitely be there."
He too makes it to the Firejolt Cafe and doesn't quite catch all of what is going on. But it seems like the place is bustling and he's glad to get to catch up with everyone. "Did you need a drink or something to wash that down? You really must have been hungry. But I can grab you something if you want to find a place to sit."
"Oh, don't get your lute in a twist, Aelyn, it'll be fine! Come on, come on, everyone's there, they're gonna start any minute, I told them to wait for you guys! Let's go!"Rosie chirps, tugging Ambre along. The café’s interior is clean and well lit, and its walls are decorated with fun, cartoonish scenes animated by permanent illusion magic. Well-known scenes include a jovial frog in a wizard’s hat stirring a cauldron, a dancing trio of lightning bolts with grinning faces, and a raven wearing a cravat and sipping daintily from a cup of coffee held in one wing. A barista's station stands in the center of the room and several tables, counters, and benches for patrons to make themselves comfortable. Normally, several first years and some upperclassmen are here studying and completing homework, but now that it's Friday, everyone here is unwinding and enjoying the break the upcoming weekend will bring.
The air buzzes with excitement—and the smell of coffee—as you make your way toward the back of Firejolt Café and duck into the lounge to witness the scene. Rosie leads you all past the cafe newsstand (completely stocked with magazines, posters, stickers, knick-knacks, and more - it's closed considering how busy the cafe is) and toward the Fireside Lounge, a space that is much more comfortable than the café’s other seating areas. This lounge is filled with sofas and armchairs where students can relax away from the hubbub, except for today.
Hidden from the view of the barista station, the lounge’s central table has been pushed toward the wall and its chairs haphazardly tossed out of the way. In the middle of the room hop four unusual frogs. Each is glowing in vibrant colors—red, blue, violet, and orange—and has been outfitted with a tiny costume. One wears a makeshift cape, another has suspenders, a third wears a stylish bow tie, and the fourth has a top hat perched jauntily on its head.
Someone has used chalk to mark lanes on the floor, and multiple students are trying to corral the frogs into a starting position. "Ta-da! We're here! And we're almost ready too - some of the frogs don't have racers yet, so if you wanna sign up, go for it! Or you can just hang out and cheer 'em on, whatever you want!" Rosie says.
As the setup continues, each of you spots someone you know (aka have relationship points with). Who is it?
Arvol eventually makes his way with Aithne to the Fireside Lounge, elbowing her as they get close enough to see the frogs. "Wow! Where do you suppose they got those cool frogs? Oh, and there's Ambre over there with Rosie!" He starts to weave his way through the crowd. He tries to keep an eye on Aithne to stay with her, and as the crowd closes in a bit, he reaches out a hand to grab Aithne's sleeve without thinking. He just wants to make sure to stay with her, because he knows she isn't much for crowds.
Just as he's about reached his friends, Arvol nearly bumps into Rampart Booviij, although he does avoid running into him. "Hey there Rampart! You know what's going on here?" (Rampart is the person Arvol spots that he knows.)
Klok spots Urzmaktok from across the room. Klok does not feel good about the capture of these unusual frogs and using them to race. Klok thinks he should stop the race but instead excuses himself from the part and approaches Urz. "Excuse me friends but I uhhh have to speak to Urz really quickly."
"Hello Urz, Hello....How are you? Are you having the same....uhhh bad feeling about this? These poor frogs, captured and used for entertainment....I wonder what kind of frog they are? Perhaps we could figure it out. They could be a rare species!"
Though she was moderately disappointed that tea and sweets wouldn't be their initial focus, the sandwich at the Biblioplex cafe had taken the edge off her hunger and the promise of a frog race did intrigue her. Aithne followed her classmates to the Firejolt Cafe's lounge area, startled by the number of people that seemed to have gathered. Already, her heart rate had begun to pick up, pumping just a little faster. Why did they always seem to find themselves in the midst of a crowd? When Arvol snagged her sleeve, she tugged it from his grasp. Taking his hand seemed a much simpler solution to her. She reconnected the two of them by sliding her hand into Arvol's and giving it a light squeeze, hoping that the slight trembling of her body wasn't too noticeable. She definitely did not want to be separated from him.
Looking around the gathered spectators, she was surprised to see Quentillius among them. She offered him a hesitant wave with her free hand. Though initially she'd been quite intimidated by his outspoken nature and theatrical interests, she'd gotten to know him better through the Dead Languages Society and had worked with him closely on the translation process for the Playactor Guild's most recent production. She had grown very fond of his company in the few weeks she'd been attending Strixhaven Academy. His bravado and warmth were a stark contrast to her own quiet, studious nature, but for whatever reason, he seemed to enjoy her company and she couldn't help but admire his outspoken temperament and incredible skill on the stage.
Feeling Aithne tug her sleeve away, Arvol is suddenly worried. Was she upset at his action? He turned to see what happened just as she grabs his hand. He gives her hand a soft squeeze in return, glancing at her with a quick smile.
He turns quickly back to focus on navigating the crowd. And also so hopefully Aithne won't notice the slight blush to his cheeks.
"Are you going to participate?" Aithne asked Arvol, stepping closer to him so her question wasn't lost in the buzz of excited conversation surrounding them. "I think I'm just going to spectate, but Rosie did say there were a few frogs left without racers if you wanted to claim one?"
Arvol looks a tinny bit nervous as Aithne vines closer. But as he heard her mention they need racers he gets a big smile on his face. "They need racers? Sounds fun! Where do I sign up?" He looks over to where Rosie is at, trying to figure where he should go to volunteer.
He then turns back to AIthne, lightly placing his hand on her shoulder. "Oh. You ok here by yourself? I can just stay here with you if you'd prefer."
He watches Aithne anxiously, looking to see her response. He seems eager to go, but also concerned for his friend.
Aithne would prefer that in fact, but it was hardly fair to expect Arvol to act as her keeper. She'd manage. "I'm fine." She offered as a reassurance instead, giving their joined hands another light squeeze before releasing her hold. "Go on. Go ask Rosie how to sign up. You don't want to miss out!"
Arvol hesitates. He'd heard his sisters say 'I'm fine' just like that many times - and they weren't. But then the squeeze of his hand and Aithne's reassuring words spurs him into action. "OK! Keep your fingers crossed!"
Bouncing on the balls of his feet, he hurries over to where Rosie is at. "Hey! Where do I volunteer to be a racer? I'd love to try! I'm not too late, am I?" Arvol's voice is very excited.
Aelyn entered the Firejolt Cafe with the others, following Rosie through the crowd towards the race track. As he got to the starting line he caught a glimpse of Aurora in the crowd. He had really appreciated being with her at Bow's End playing and singing and laughing together. The dhampir was really something. So different from Mina. Was that a smile? Aelyn felt his heart race for a short moment. Aurora. She had been so close the past three weeks, but only now he suddenly really saw her. Aurora. As he looked back at her he found himself humming one of her beautiful dirges. Aurora. Time seemingly slowed down around him, noices became muffled. Yes she did smile. Aurora.
Aelyn was suddenly brought back by Arvol's excited voice. "Hey, can I be on your team my friend. Just give me the name of your frog and I'll try to come up with a catchy cheering rhyme." He said, following Arvol to volunteer to be a racer.
"You aren't going to race, Aelyn? Well, you definitely better cheer loud then. I probably won't win this thing but I darn sure ought to have the best fans!" Arvol says, light-heartedly.
"Nah, I wouldn't ever win any race against you my friend." Aelyn says with a smirk. "But I will happily cheer you on in any endeavour." He adds, smiling warmly, laying a friendly hand on Arvols shoulder. (Granting Arvol inspiration in the race to come, with the frogs)
Rampart, still adorned in their ceremonial plate armor, approaches Arvol with a smile. "Hello, Arvol, my friend! So, which frog do you think will take the victory? Aurora walks over to Aelyn as soon as she lays eyes on him. "Fancy seeing you here, Silversong,"She states, giving him a cheeky look. He looks back at Rosie,"Please tell me I get to name the frog!"
"Say no more," Ambre exclaimd. "I'm in!"
