"Barne... and I live in... North Port," replies the man, hesitantly. 

From within the building, Dora hears someone yell that they are coming.

"Why is that important?" asks the man, gruffly. "How can I be in trouble? I was just doing my job." 

"Relax Barne, its standard watch procedure. By the way I enlisted Maclan, is it,  to help me chase a fugitive, unfortunately the horse objected. Now lets ready him to carry in."

"Yeah, Ammanuel Maclan," replies Barne. "My boss. Can you vouch for me? I cannot afford to lose my job."

"I will tell Maclan what I saw., no more and no less."

[OOC: Dora cannot detect any deceit in Barne—he does seem concerned about his job. However, the man seems to be a hearty enough specimen, so his doing this sort of job seems a little strange.]

Yell through the door "Hurry up in there!"

"Coming, I am coming," says a muffled voice in Stemian from behind the door.

The injured man coughs suddenly, twists to one side, and then spit blood onto the step before becoming silent again.

"He does not look good," says Barne, just as footsteps approach the other side of the door and Dora hears the bar being lifted.

"Yes?" says a voice inside through the slightly opened door. 

"Whoa!" says the voice again in a more excited tone as the door opens wide. "What is happening here?"

Standing in the doorway is a watchman of mixed blood from the ward's second hand that Dora recognises. His first name is Sargon.

"Good morning Handsman Sargon, we have an badly injured civilian. Is there a bed somewhere we can lay him while you send urgently for a healer?"

The handsman reacts swiftly, directing Dora and Barne to carry the man's body into the building and along a corridor to a room used by the watch as a shared eating and recreation area. In this room there is also a low padded bench in a quiet corner which would be suitable to use as a makeshift bed.

Setting down his burden, Handsmen Sargon says, "Pee-yew, the three of you smell like a latrine. What has happened here?"

"Night soil cart crash."

"Now where is the nearest healer?"

"Healer Wattson is our nearest; just down the street" says the handsman, looking down at the injured man. "But he will not like being woken at this time of night. It will cost lots of coin..."

Then, after a moment, he adds, "He does not look too bad to me. Perhaps we should just let him sleep it off?"

"The Sheriff will see him paid, can you seen to this right now." 

The handsman hesitates for but a moment before saying, "Of course, handleader. I will be back as soon as I can."

Turning, the man heads off towards the entrance of the sheriff's office leaving Dora with Barne to tend to the injured man.

"Do you think he is going to be okay?" says Barne, looking at the unconscious driver.

"We have done all we can, lets wait for the healer. When he arrives I would like you to arrange a clean-up crew. When you've finished you can come by and check Maclan's condition."

"It will count in your favour if you can get the wreck cleaned up quickly."

Barne scratches his head and says, "Not sure how fast we will be able to clean it up without a horse. Most of the crew will be finished up by the time I get back to the Haven, but as this happened right outside the Sheriff's back door, I suspect it will be handled sooner rather than later."

[OOC: 'Haven' is short for 'Rat Haven', the commonly used term for the biodegradable waste dump at the extreme western end of the southern island of Constantine (see map here).]

He then asks, "Do I have to stick around here? I should really try to catch those kids who ran off. If they do not report in at the end of the night, they could get into even more trouble than they already are."

[OOC: The children are likely young offenders sentenced to civic duties for crimes they have committed. It is that, or get thrown into jail with the adult offenders.]

"Give me a few more moments Barne, I can't let you wander through the watch-house unescorted and I think we need to keep watch over Maclan."

I nod over to the stove " How about making us both a cup of char?"

Following Dora's nod, Barne gets to his feet and says, "Sure, I could do with a brew. It has been a long night."

He walks across to the stove before adding, "But I am worried about those kids. They are street kids. The temptation to go back to their old way of life will be pretty strong and they are likely to start stealing again and get into even more trouble."

"Yes but right now we have to watch over Maclan then I will see if I can come with you to gather the kids. No promises mind."

I stifle a yawn, the night is catching up with me.

[OOC is there any indication of when Dora's shift will end and she can get home for some breakie and a kip?]

[Dora has a half day shift with 10 days on and then 10 days off on full pay. She started at the second candle after sunset and finishes at the second candle after sunrise.]

Barne just grunts and starts making the char.
