Caelyn moves forward into the ring cursing Mist in her mind for coming up with this pointless exercise.
Ill see what i can do.She says to Ashe before the match begins.
As they prepare Caelyn pulls out the daggers and brushes her fingers along the hilts. Adrenaline starts rushing through her veins as she quickly reacts to the starting sign. She bends through her knees and takes a step forward to force Ashe to take some extra time to realign his aim towards her. Caelyn uses this time to swing one of her daggers forward across Ashe's forward leg and swings around her own body to twirl around and end up at his side to strike him with her other dagger onto his body.
As Caelyns 2nd strike lands she feels her aim was off, with her dagger hitting an iron piece of Ashe's armor she fails to make a good impact. Realising her bad luck she fails to keep track of Ashe's daggers and gets hit by both nasty attacks hurting badly. She looks down to the blood as her grip on her daggers fail dropping them on the floor as her body follows falling unconcious.
Initiative: 6 Action: Main hand Attack: 16 Damage: 7 offhand 7 Damage: 1
Ashe barely had any time to react to Caelyn's sudden adjustment before she released her savage assault. He let out a pained shout as one of the rogue's daggers cut a deep gash in his leg. The second attack went right for his gut. It was only thanks to good luck and the Academy's rigorous endurance training that the elf's second blow did not wound him too deeply; any ordinary person would have been a corpse. Taking advantage of her lowered position, Ashe drew his own daggers and jammed them both into the space between Caelyn's shoulders and neck, right by the collar bone, gritting his teeth to ignore the pain pulsing through his leg. Once it was clear Caelyn was about to fall unconscious, Ashe slipped an arm around her so that she would not fall and placed her gently on the ground. Once she is secure, he sheathes his daggers and presses his hands to the profusely-bleeding gash in his leg.
"Khyber's claws... she cut right through the artery... Well done, Caelyn..." He grumbles, his head swimming from the mounting blood loss. "That was too close... I got lucky..."
From off to the side, Pepper watches the other first round fights with Cyril. She winces when Caelyn blurs into action, both daggers slicing into Ashe. “Wow, she moved fast, he had no—“she cuts off abruptly as Ashe, somehow still standing, brings both of his daggers up and around, stabbing her in the neck, then cradles her as she slips bonelessly to the ground.
Speechless, Pepper just shakes her head, but springs to help them. “Somebody’s watching over you today,” she tells Ashe as she puts pressure on Caelyn’s wound. Then she goes quiet, her mind suddenly a little distant, until the healers arrive.

The stubby little dwarf wizard (Thinkhammer) enters the ring witha confident grin. Although he was generally slower than most of the other students, he was a tough ball of determination and grit. As the whistle blows he begins casting a nasty little spell useful for such close quarters, only to have Pernach's greatsword catch him squarely on the temple. In that two seconds, he goes down like an overly large bag of grain.
Carcan pulls out a long leather whip in one hand and a handaxe in the other. Kira's opening gambit was a firebolt - Carcan's was to use his whip to keep his opponent at the edge of the mat. As the small sphere of magical flame flies wide past him, he snaps the whip at the gnome's torso (Attack: 25 Damage: 6)
With the first three matches quickly ending in a single, furious flurry of blows, all eyes turn to the gnome and changeling on mat 2...

Kira flinches as the whip hits her with a crack, but doesn't let it affect her for long; she straightens quickly. She's shorter than Carcan, by a lot, just like she's shorter than most people, and it does her well to take advantage of that. She attempts to dart out of his reach, slipping close to him and aiming to embed her dagger in his thigh.

Carcan grunts in pain with Kira's attack, and he drops the whip now that she's close. He draws another handaxe and strikes back with a practiced double-strike.
"More like I got lucky, Pepper,"Ashe grumbles, adjusting his weight so that as much as possible is pressing down on the cut Caelyn left him."Seeing as you're still standing, I'm guessing you won your bout. Congrats."
“Thanks,” Pepper says as the healers take over for Caelyn. “We both hesitated, so I’m not that pleased.” She looks up as she hears reactions to Kira’s defeat. “Looks like the changeling won. I hope I don’t draw Pernach this round. I’d like to stay standing a little longer.”

Pernach watches the other fights with interest. He's a bit surprised to see that he's the only one who avoided spilling blood, and that few spells were cast.
Mist blows the whistle twice, indicating all fighting stops. On a side wall, tiles with your names on them are moved to show winners and losers (See the tourny brackets here!)The healers quickly bandage you all up, using a magic-infused wrapping that seals and cleans your wounds. (You may restore up to 10 HP each. If you still have damage, suck it up and fight on!)Mist announces the second round match-ups.
"Pernach and Pepper - report to mat 1. Carcan and Ashe, you are on mat 2. In the consolation bracket, Thinkhammer and Cyril will fight on mat 3, and Kira and Caelyn will meet on mat 4. You have two minutes to have your wounds tended."

When she sees the brackets, Pepper smiles quietly to herself. She begins to stretch, swinging her arms and hopping in place to get her heart rate up. She approaches Pernach before they step on the mat. She doesn’t know him well, but has a lot of respect for what she does know. “I wouldn’t mind if you used the flat of your sword against me, too,” she says with a smile. This is clearly a joke, there’s no question that she will be using the edge of hers. Pepper doesn’t hold back. Everyone knows that. “Good luck.”
She circles the mat to the other side, for once glad it isn’t any bigger. With his extra size and the reach of his sword, Pernach would have the advantage if she had to close the distance. She draws both of her long swords in one fluid motion, and cracking her neck, steps onto the mat.
Initiative: 20
…oof.
Maybe she’s intimidated by his size. Maybe she’s too cold after her quick match. Whatever the reason, she’s slow off the start. When she does get her swords up (assuming Pernach doesn’t take her down with one hit), she closes and whirls into action, both swords trying to snake in under his guard.
Move: close with Pernach if he hasn’t already closed with her. Action: attack with a long sword. 24 to hit, for 11 slashing dmg Bonus Action: attack with off hand long sword. 11 to hit, for 8 slashing dmg

Ashe initiative: 12
Outsped yet again - Ashe curses under his breath.
On the off-chance Carcan doesn't tear through him like a hungry Droaam warg before he can even retaliate, Ashe grabs at one of the changeling's arms. The hissing grows to a crescendo as bizarre magical energy crackles through his left arm.
Chaos Grasp Attack: 14 Damage: 8
Damage type: 2 - Thunder, but it doesn't really matter - it likely does not hit.
The burst of thunder snaps through the room, having gone off before Ashe could lay their hands on the changeling. Not good.
In an attempt to mitigate any wounds on him, he casts healing word.
6 HP restored.
Of course, all of this is for naught if Carcan knocks Ashe out prior to him getting to act.

Cyril approaches the mat, sizing up his opponent as he does. The dwarf may not be a physical powerhouse, but it would be foolish to underestimate the effects of his magic.
Initiative: 15
Regardless of anything, Cyril know his only real chance against the mage is quick, decisive action. With that in mind he dashes forward as things begin, hoping to close the distance before whatever spell Thinkhammer might be hatching goes off. He hits the ground suddenly, sliding forward and kicking upwards towards the dwarf's chin with one foot. Pushing off of his first strike, he turns, lashing with the other foot at his opponent's knee this time and letting momentum spin him back into a crouch.
Movement towards Thinkhammer.
Action: Unarmed strike: 16 to hit, 8 damage.
Bonus action: Unarmed strike: 10 to hit, 5 damage.

Carcan grins, perhaps confident after his first win. The changeling starts the match the same way as before - a whip in one hand swirling around him and a handaxe in his offhand. Quick as a whip, literally, he snaps the braided leather at Ashe! Attack: 19 Damage: 4
Thinkhammer looks a bit unsteady on his feet after the massive knock-out blow from round 1, but he still gets a spell off first! A dazzling array of flashing, colored light springs from his hand in a wide cone, blinding Cyril! (Roll a disadvantage attack for your first attack - the second will miss regardless =)
Pernach steps into the ring with Pepper, and salutes her with his blade.
Initiative: 8
His normally pale blue eye gems turn to a burnt umber color as runes and sigils come to life over his body. He swings the heavy blade at his opponent...
Attack: 17 Damage: 8
The flat of the blade slams into her, but she manages to protect her head and remain standing. Her two slashes find their marks, but the glowing runes seem to help weaken their effects.
Pepper's slow start costs her, as the warforged's heavy swing hits hard. She barely manages to deflect most of it with one of her swords, but her follow throughs are sure, snaking in and slashing, drawing sparks across his glowing skin. His second swing is slower, and she manages to deflect it entirely with one of her swords. It looked to those watching like she was going to step back to catch her wind, her body bleeding freely from his first blow, but the opening he has left her is too wide, and she dives in, both swords slashing...
Action: Swing longsword! 21 to hit, for 5 slashing dmg Bonus Action: Swing other longsword! 9 to hit, for 5 slashing dmg
edit: sorry, not bleeding, I see now he did use the flat... don't want to go edit it and risk the red banner of dice manipulation...
