Sindri tries to place the smell
Perception 13
"Chonk, do you think we can move this table on it's side and block the door? Maybe Guroz or Lefaris can help you? I'm not very strong"she seems a bit embarrassed by that last part, though it isn't odd seeing that she is obviously a little gnome.
Turning to the child, "Is your Papa locked down there or down there on purpose? Come, show me" And she ushers the child away from the door-banging sheep. She calls back to her friends, "if you want me to start blasting those sheep through the windows, let me know!"
There is indeed a heavy oak table in the centre of the room that could be moved to bolster the door.
"Papa told me to topple the shelves... so I would be safe." Chonk, you can see that a shelf stack has indeed by toppled on top of the hatch to weigh it down.
"There is just me and papa." the child flinches as the sheep batter against the door once more. The frame is beginning to split around the hinges.
Sindri the smell is sharp and metallic. It makes you think of blood and fire but you can not quite place it. You do note however that the stench grows stronger near the hatch as you approach it with the child.
"He told me to topple the shelves so I would be safe." they repeat, "...but then I got scared and I could not move it again. So... so I ran away."
"One danger at a time please." Lefaris says, glancing to the trapdoor. She moves to the oak table and help to move it to block the door the sheep are ramming against.
"I agree with Lefaris - be prepared for the worst under that trapdoor." Guroz says after helping with the table.
He lowers his voice to the others, "I don't think a father would think it's safer for their child to be away from them unless he himself had become a danger... you catch my drift?"
“Can the sheep be shot from the windows? Or would drawing them towards the windows be even more dangerous?” Chonk tries to determine if the structure of the building will provide an ability to fire outward without risking incursion. Thinning the herd and moving them away from the door should at least save the door.
”Did your papa keep any weapons in the house?”Chonk asks the child.
Chonk you peer through the window and notice two things. One, the windows are indeed high enough to shoot down at the woolly monsters, though they are solid glass so you would have to break them; and two, there are at least two hundred angry sheep converging on the house.
You ask the child about weapons their eyes brighten as they dash off into the bedroom. You hear some clanking and shifting of furniture and then moments later they emerge dragging a large two handed axe behind them. It is not a fancy weapon, but it looks well made and wicked sharp.
"I don't think anything is going to scare those sheep away." Lefaris says, glancing to the axe. She looks then to the trap door. "Now, tell us why your father needed you to lock him in the area below that trap door." She turns and eyes the child directly. "Did he turn mad like the sheep? Do you know why the sheep are acting that way? Is there something different, something that happened prior to the sheep starting to act this way?"
"Papa was trying to stop the monsters that come at night. He.. was learning magic and... it made the sheep sick I think, and then they got angry. Then papa got sick and told me to stay upstairs and wait while he finished his work. He told me to block the hatch and not go down... he told me..."
Their eyes fill with tears as they look up at you all. "Is Papa ok?"
“Is there food down there for him to eat? Is there any other way into or out of the cellar? Maybe you should stay in the kitchen until we make sure it’s safe for you to see your papa.”
Chonk will quickly scan the other rooms and look through windows to see if the sheep are only on one side of the house. He’ll update the team and urge, “We should move quickly.”
He then turns to Guroz, “Wanna swing that? I think you’re the only one here that can make use of it.“Referring to the great axe.
"Wait, so there isn't another way out of the cellar? Does that mean the only way away from this farmhouse is through the sheep?" she stands on some furniture to look out the window and exclaims, "There are hundreds out there! How are we going to do it?" Sindri is trying her best to calm the sense of panic that is rising within her.
Chonk you make your way around the farm house, peering through the windows and assessing the situation. There is a back door to the building but the sheep are everywhere and would be upon you within moments of opening it.
Thankfully as you return to the living area you note that the battering of the front door has calmed for the moment giving you chance to collect your thoughts.
Chonk will hold an index finger to his lips and mime a “Shhh”.
Very quietly he will say, “The sheep aren’t completely mindless. Battering themselves senseless wasn’t working. Perhaps they will scatter again as we first encountered them. Or perhaps they will compete with zombies after nightfall.”
Chonk scratches his chin, “I’m beginning to believe the solution is in the cellar. Either with the aid of the child’s papa or figuring out how to complete his work without him.”
”What do you all say? Should we see who can help who downstairs?”
He then turns to Sindri, “Do you want to stay in the kitchen with the little one? They might not want to see what might have to be done down there. I will give a couple of chirping whistles if we need you urgently or one of us will retrieve you and the child if it is safe.”
"It sounds like the father may be the cause of the sheep problem." Lefaris points out. "The child said the sheep got sick after her father started his work. I would imagine the answers we seek are in the basement." She moves over to the trapdoor, ready to aid anyone who works to clear the way to open it.
Giving Chonk a nod, Guroz takes the greataxe. Keeping his voice low, he offers up the iron sword to anyone. If anyone isn't keen, he'll keep it in his backpack.
"Before we go tumbling downstairs, I'm need of a little rest, my legs are killing me. Just in case things don't go smooth."
Chonk concedes that the sense of urgency has diminished.
To Guroz, “These backpacks are amazing. Try putting the sword in your pack and see what I mean.”
If it is the will of the party to rest, Chonk will join the child in the kitchen. He will sit on the floor in a lotus position and begin digging in his backpack.
”You’ve been through a lot lately. You can call me Chonk. What’s your name? How long has your papa been in the basement?”
This will begin a series of questions to pass the time and gain information. Chonk will also answer questions to the best of his abilities. This is a conversation not an inquisition. We have an hour, so why not?
How old are you? Do you and your papa work the farm alone or are there farmhands somewhere out there? How many sheep were in your flock? Did you raise crops as well as shepherd sheep? Do you have other farm animals? What’s in the barn? How did the sheep get to Needlehole, for sale?”
At some point, Chonk will produce one of the berries from his pack and ask, “What can you tell me about these berries? Are they good?”
At the end of the rest, he’ll recover : 4 hit points.
The child tries out the word, "CH..Chonk." they grin, "That is a funny name."
They look confused for a moment, "Papa calls me Child. I have not been given a name; only really important people have names. When I grow up I might move to the village and get a number, or maybe become a farmer like Papa. Who gave you your name?"
You learn from the Child that their Papa has been in the basement for nearly two days. They explain that they are five years old and that they live on the farm alone with the Farmer. There were some villagers from Needlehole who were helping but they went missing when the sheep got sick; about two weeks ago. The helpers would normally make the deliveries for the farmer. They do not know how many sheep there are other than "lots and lots and you discover the Farmer also grows carrots, wheat and potatoes as well as owning an orchard. There are no other animals besides a few chickens and there is a barn in the next valley near the wheat fields. It contains tools and wheat.
They wrinkle their nose at the berries, "Papa bought the bushes from a travelling merchant but only one survived. They are called sweet berries and Papa says they are from the north. I think they are too sweet, but Papa says they are good for me."

Working together you all move the table easily enough and soon have the door secured, though the beasts outside do not relent in their attacks.

Chonk roll for perception as you scan the area for dangers.
As you do this the child replies, "There's a store room down there with potatoes and carrots. I dont think there is any other way down there."
At your suggestion they wait in the kitchen, the child looks doubtful but follows you through without complaint.
