Irmiel did not mind the flood of opinions and speculations as long as some streams carried needed information. They already learned something (even if not what they hoped for), when the general revealed more of very interesting stuff. She did not even have to force herself to look surprised. "Damage to the weave?!" She was concentrating for too long on that "get into academy" goal and lost track of more important things. "Thank you, general, this is an unexpected turn of events but some that make that quest... quite important, I may say?" (Definitely personal! But that was beside the point. ) "Provided the elves are right and Mytallars are bound to this damage somehow... And yet we have shadovar searching for the same things."Irmiel sighed and asked the question they actually came here to ask. "General, with your wast knowledge... do you happen to know about the location of any netheresian city, besides the two obvious - Nhalloth and ruins of Thultanthar?"
Sistri nods at the appropriate moments as she follows along with the general's comments. This was interesting about the Weave, although she wasn't totally sure what it all meant.
She stayed quiet, waiting to hear the response to Irmiel's questions.
Noticing the disinterest of the guard Llwyd decides that it is worth a further attempt. Not that he was the most persuasive or intimidating person in the world, but maybe he could try motivating the man to deliver their word to the sage.
“Father, guide me." He said resting a hand upon his chest and looking at the skies, casting Guidance upon himself. "Excuse me, sir, but imagine the following scenario: we do return and manage to get the audience. In said audience, occasion when we will speak about first-hand accounts of Shadovar activity involving the use of magic, the sage questions why we couldn’t reach him earlier given that in lieu of the recent attacks our communication gain character of urgency. We will them be forced to say that the gate guards decided independently that he, the sage, would not want to hear what we have to say without following procedures put in place to deal with ordinary situations even if our conversation have extraordinary nature.” His voice was calm and collect. As much as it could be. “Correct me if I’m wrong, Arian, but didn’t you say that such obstruction could irritate the sage and make him punish our new friends here rather severely?” The druid hoped that by bringing the warrior in the conversation she could strengthen the narrative. Make it look like by not contacting the sage they gatemen could get in trouble. “It is not my intention to tell you how do your job, please do not think otherwise, but it seems to me that would be safer for you to first check with the sage if he wishes to receive our visit.” Most likely he wouldn’t, but it was worth the try. “By the way, I am forced to ask, what is your name?”
A name to be given to the sage, should the poor guard prove to be an obstacle in their communication. Or so Llwyd hoped the man would think.
Notes: Llwyd brings Kris in the coversation so whatever she speaks helps in a possible charisma check (basically, I, as a player, am trying to create a situation in which Kris can take the help action concerning a possible charisma check). I would also like to know if for said check I could apply Guidance.
The old man opens his eyes a bit wider, contemplating, "Well, obviously there is the ruin of Sakkors that was crashed into Ordulin. Though that place is cursed. A place of eternal dusk, with swirling shadows like a hazy fog and filled with undead and negative energy, rubble and ghostly haze. I expect that if there is another base of operations for the Shadovar, it is there. There is also Xinlenal. It is located in Neverwinter Wood on the sword coast. But that also is a stronghold of the Shadovar. We believed they were trying to repair the city and raise it once again, but as of yet, they've not been able to do so. You know. It's unfortunate, but any one of the ruins of these cities could contain more information about further ruins. That means the Shadovar really are far ahead in any quest to reclaim such places. The only people with equally ancient knowledge might be the elves. You know, they've got an ancient place of learning in the forest called the Vault of Unquenched Vengeance. I argued that if we were going to ally ourselves with them, that we should get access for a few of our scholars. But, the idea was discarded. I know why the Queen made this a procurement for mercenary's. The likelihood of success is low. Far too low for Cormyr to invest its own resources and troops. Better give off a good pay day and let the rabble bet their lives trying to find it."

Brilliant, Kris thinks, looking admiringly at Llwyd. Stories of the wisdom of the forest folk are not just tall tales.
"Oh, indeed!"Arian agrees quickly. "I feel almost certain that the Sage would be right cross! Especially considering that the request comes from the wounded." She points, unnecessarily, to her eyepatch. "He should be very interested, very interested indeed, in the name of the guard who stood in the way."
Sistri again listens to General Silvermace speak. For a moment she had a brief thought of the group racing off to one of these known shadovar locations, sneaking in, then slipping out with information on other sites. But then she recalled the prowess of those shadovar they faced yesterday and knew that was not likely to work.
"Those locations certainly sound like a sure way to meet an untimely death."
She then hesitated, before deciding to tip their hand a bit in hopes of learning more. "We read about a shadovar city that crashed somewhere around what is now Highmelt Lake. Have you ever heard of that one?"
The guard looks up at Llwyd with as an unimpressed face as Llwyd think might be possible. "What did you say your names were? Titles of your positions within the ministry? Can you please show me some ID?"
The other soldiers nearby tense a bit, obviously asking for this sort of information is a bit of a tell that the visitors present are suspicious.
The old man shrugs offhandedly, "I'm afraid not. You know, there used to be dozens of those flying cities long ago. They used to travel all across the world. From the Sword Coast, to the far north, to south of the sea of fallen stars. Who can say where they all may have ended up. Though, with all that ice bein melted by the Shadovar magics, I suppose it'd make sense that it might reveal some old ancient ruins from the Netheril age. I was told that the Anauroch used to be the center of their mighty empire."
"I fully agree!" Irmiel energetically nodded. "We should be allowed to learn everything elves know about the cities! If it is all because of them anyway and they want those mythallars - they are ought to help!"She was angry with her relatives in advance, expecting them to refuse to share but intended to try anyway. "The Vault of Unquenched Vengeance... Is it in Cormanthor? Wherever it is, we probably have to try and get in there..."She drummed her fingers on the arm of her chair, thinking. "Many thanks to you, General for sharing your insights with us. Your advice and your knowledge are much appreciated and were most helpful. We dare not to take more of your time."
Unless Sistri had other questions, Irmiel was ready to go, though, could as easily stay should the general wish to talk more. She could be patient and grateful too.
Sistri nods, "Yes, we should probably go. General Silvermace, we greatly enjoyed our time talking with you. I only regret we do not have the time to learn and train with you properly to help face this shadovar threat."
Maybe he spoke too calmly. Maybe he should have tried to be more entitled, more intimidating. Either that or the guard was particularly unaware of the consequences he would face the two of them ever spoke with the sage. A big if, one might add. The satyr notices the other guards tensing up and decides that further insistence will only risk trouble. He looks at Kriss and reads in her expression that she is cooking some kind of plan. Too late for that, he thought calmly turning his eyes to the soldier.
“We already said our names, workers do so under position, not titles, and you ask for proof of identification without providing any yourself. Old Silvermace would be disheartened.”And maybe he will pass a good scolding to the guards. If Irmiel and Sistri establish contact and obtain his help. “Let’s go, Arian. Conversation with this gentleman will go nowhere and we know the time of the day. This shall suffice for the sage.”
With that said he simply turn back and walk away, hoping Kris would follow. His thought drift towards what they should do next. Try the library again? Return to Charlie? Did we agree on a point to meet after the inquiries? He couldn’t remember to save his life.
Kris looks at the guard. She figures for him to get a posting at the front gate of the royal grounds he must be a pretty high performing soldiers. He must deal with a lot and see it all. Not the type to take a bribe at all she'd figure based on his harsh face, crinkled eyebrows, and sense of superiority. She actually thinks an attempt to bribe him could well land her in jail. It is as Llwyd suggests....likely time to go.
The guard looks at Llwyd with a bit of a surprised look, then a slight grin appears and he makes a silent hiccup styled laugh as the two of you walk away. Clearly something you said amused him and perhaps impressed him enough to let you walk away without further harassment. Perhaps it was the hearty belief, maybe the name drop of Silvermace. Regardless he presses them no further.
The two of them turn away from the guard and leave the royal grounds without an audience to the royal sage.
Meanwhile, Sistri and Irmiel depart the Silvermace house.
A short time later everyone is back at Charlie's, sitting in the back room and sharing what they learned. Both groups go through all of the insights, though Irmiel and Sistri take up almost all of the talking space since Llwyd and Kris sadly came up empty handed.
Charlie nods and gives Llwyd a little rub on his back, "Don't take it too hard son. Asking to see the Royal Sage is a ballsy move and was unlikely to work from the start. Way to try."
He nods to Irmiel and Sistri, "They got the easier target for sure. I remember the general now. I sat through an address he made to a medal ceremony once. He was a long winded fella, went way over his allotted speaking time. I may have dozed off as his speech wound its way through a river of random disjointed thoughts." He grins. "So...what now? We still have the teleportation coupon and Candlekeep....the passes for the library in Arabel, and now possibly this Vault of Unquenched Vengeance. That is up north in the Cormanthor forest, almost straight north of Sembia. It'd be quite a hike, and I'm not quite sure how you'd ask the elves for access, but, it's certainly an option. They'll have ancient knowledge dating back to the Netheril age for sure. And likely lesser known material than what other groups are finding in the libraries here."

Kris pats Llwyd's shoulder. "You did really well, Llwyd! I'd say you're a natural diplomat. Don't be disheartened. We'll find another way to speak to the Sage. Let's find Sistri and Irmiel. Hopefully they've had better luck."
Irmiel was walking back to Charlie's slow and periodically looking up, searching for those "twinkles" the general was talking about. "Had to give you wings, Osrik!" Irmiled petted the little lizard and looked up again, squinting at the sky. She stopped when "twinkles" began to appear everywhere she looked - the sun was too bright today but kept that thoughtful expression. The mission turned out to be even more serious than it was before.
"I say, our best bet is the Candlekeep now." The air in Charlie's shop was not blinking, fortunately, and she could concentrate on their findings so far. "Sure, you can find something anywhere, and maybe the book we are after is in Arabel, but it's no different than to find the information on the street. Sure, there is a chance, but how big is that chance? Candlekeep, on the other hand, is much bigger than any library anywhere. They ought to have what we need! As for elves... It seems logical, that if they convinced the queen to start the quest, they want the result and are supposed to help. But why did not they do it right away? Llwyd, do you think you can convince someone important in Cormanthor to let us see the mythallar (to know what we are searching for) and to share what they know about other cities? We are doing for them after all. Well, for everyone, but it's them who think mythallars are the keys to save magic."
Sistri watches Irmiel as she occaisonally searches the sky. "I'm not sure you're going to just see anything with just casual looks." She then pauses, "But what do I know. I'm sure you know far more about the Weave than I do." As they walk back she continues talking, "Hope you didn't mind the 'Learned' thing back there. I wasn't sure if you had any sort of official title." She grins. "Or official sounding. I know I don't know you well, but you just seem rather clever. Very smart." She gives Irmiel a smile. "I certainly appreciated the help yesterday."
Once back to Charie's she says, "Well, General Silvermace was quite a wonderful man to talk to. But I'm not sure we learned much that will help us pinpoint anything." She will allow Irmiel to explain the whole issue about the Weave and the general's thoughts on the expeditions, filling in from her recollections where needed.
She turns to Charlie, "How does the teleportation to Candlekeep work? Can we go from anywhere? Or is it somewhere specific here in Suzail?"
"Oh, that was lovely!"assured Sistri Irmiel. She really wanted to add "true too" but tried to keep a humble attitude. "Thank you for that and fast thinking too."
She nodded to Sistri's comments about the general (only adding that at least now they know about where not to look) and the good questions about teleportation. Indeed, how does it work?
Charlie looks up from his notebook where he's been taking notes, "Oh...um, yes, it's only useful here, at Suzail. Apparently you go to the royal grounds, present the coupon, and one of the high mages will teleport you directly to Candlekeep. Or near enough."
The sound of creaking boards, hammering, and sawing can be heard through the wall as Charlie's carpenters work on creating a door through the wall.
