Laughter echoes out of the darkness filling the carcass of what used to be a house. A glance reveals two glowing green eyes in the inky black.
"You think you can put an end to meee?" The hideous voice whispers from the black. "I am the darknessss eternal, the thing that hauntss the nightmaress of all Hyboria. It iss a wonderful thing, the death of the light. For me, the child of the endlessss void, the herald of the Nothing, it iss the fondesst blessssing."
Using her Divine Sense, Amitola makes sure the owner of the green eyes has completely disappeared.
"It appears he has gone, but he will return, that is for sure. We must prepare for his return, come up with a foundation of an idea before he returns."
Her speaking makes her walk more into the group, being slightly behind the group most of the time until now. Looking amongst the faces surrounding her, she gives a slight smile, something she doesn't do often, but in this moment of tension, it felt needed.
"Glad to have you watching our backs Amitola." He says to the dragonborn. "A paladin will be a great help to us if this thing can master shadows, please keep your senses alert for its return."
To Lady Kaede, "This creature may indeed look a fool, but despite being little more then a nuisance it has the power to be a dangerous thing in it's own right. Many a Goblin tribe felt the weight of its deprivation's before I was able to capture it."
To Wo-Dan: “What control do you have of these jailed and released trinkets of yours, master Wo-Dan? If they were killed and trapped inside your cards, would they not desire to flee at the earliest opportunity, once you’ve conjured them back to life?”
To Amitola, after giving her the slightest of head nods: “I, for one, am especially glad a kindred warrior is fighting on our side, Senshi Amitola!”
Rum watches dubiously as the scene plays out with the strange looking goblin creature, but he simply shrugs.
"Whatever draws the Gmork out, fellow Remnants, is fine with me. The question remains, as has been asked before, how do we kill what seemingly cannot be killed?", he asks, turning to Amitola, hoping the Paladin has some power in this regard.
"If the best we can do is drive it away, then so be it, but we should at least try and make it permanent this time. Although I know not how".
Jek has already started putting his spare robe on nilbog when Amitola comes up. Jek will give her wink. He then finishes getting the robe situated and starts whispering to nilbog while the others discuss the plan. "... Performance of your life.... And then you'll put your hand up like this, no this way, good.... Stop about 30ft out... I don't know, improvise at that point.... You can do this."
Jek will nod to the others and say quietly "I think we're ready. Wo-Dan, if he's weak enough, can you capture him in one of your cards? I can try to put it to sleep if it's weak enough."
Once everyone is ready, Jek slinks into the middle of the group and will yell out. "No, I can't do this. This won't work! He's after me, I need to face him. Alone. Shade vs shade. It's the only way. You all need to continue with the mission. Leave me!" Jek then nudges nilbog forward.
After going about 15ft, nilbog will stop and turn around. Jek uses minor illusion to have it say in his voice. "Don't stand there, Go! It's me he wants. I will catch up! Leave!" Once he says leave, nilbog raises his hand up towards the group. Jek winces as the hand motion is a little jittery, but continues. He casts Silent Image and a stone wall builds up in front of the Remnants, blocking them in. It has strategically placed gaps in the stone for them to look out of.
Nilbog nods and continues out to 30ft, in the middle of the road. It then raises it's arms in the air. Jek then uses thaumaturgy to have his booming voice (3 times as loud) shout out from nilbog. "I AM HERE, GMORK! SHADE OF THE BRIGHT LADY, SHADE OF THE WORLD! LET US END THIS, SHADE VS SHADE! FACE ME, OR ARE YOU TOO MUCH OF A COWARD?"
Rum stays ready, using the gaps in the illusory wall to watch for Gmork.
If the Gmork does appear, he will not take anything at face value and will try and spot if it is real or another illusion, aware of Jek's earlier warning that there was illusion magic all around.
"Be careful, fellow Remnants", he whispers to the others, "Do not assume Gmork will not play the same game, and also use illusions. Only move once we know it is Gmork itself".
Perception: 13+11=24 - to spot Gmork Investigation: 7+0=7 (Passive: 10) - To ensure it is real
There's a moment of silence before the horror crawls from the darkness between two nearby buildings and glides along on ethereal tendrils toward Jek's doppelganger. The thing slides around the dummy in an arc, it's finger's sliding across the dummy's shoulders and the back of its neck while its blackened face leans close. The Remnants can hear that whatever the thing is, it's whispering.
Jek's spare cloak starts to smoke. No, not smoke. Shadows boil off of the cloak before the dummy collapses to the ground, giving up shadows to the air like wisps. The creature looks around, then begins to glide toward the next gap between buildings...
In the shadows behind her helm, Kaede's face twists up in concern...thinking to herself: How do I strike a beast which has no form? How do I kill a beast which is already dead?
"Patience, my friends. Warriors are not the ones who always win, but the ones that always fight. Let us see how this plays out."
The Nilbog holds perfectly still while the shadow moves around and across it. When the cloak begins to smoke and char the little goblin spirit starts to dance in place hooting softly, but because of the orders it received it can't leave the spot it is in. Finally the last remnants of the cloak fade to ash and the Nilbog falls to earth in a theatrical parody of death, twitching and moaning in an exaggerated manner as the shadows retreat.
Wo-Dan shakes his head and speaks, "Well it seems Gmork saw through the deception easily enough. I suppose there is no point in continuing with it." He calls out to the Nilbog in its own language and the creature hops to its feet, gives a bow and dissapears in a flash.
Answering Lady Kaede's earlier question.
"My prisons enslave the spirit of the creature's. They may desire freedom all they want but they will never again be freed to wreak havoc save at my command."
Jek looks concerned when Gmork doesn't come out. At Oten's description, Jek responds "Damn it. I thought this would work. We need light... Oh..." Jek looks into the alley this creature came from, then to the other gaps in the buildings, trying to see if he can spot Gmork. (Perception 25).
Taking his best guess, he moves within 60ft through his illusion and says "Bright Lady, give us light!" As he says this, the illusion of the wall disperses into shadows. Simultaneously, an area in the direction Jek is looking is outlined in blue-white light.
Rum watches as events unfold, listening to the other Remnants. Patience was key he had to agree. Whatever the creature was, if it was not Gmork it was not worth their time, yet.
As Jek moves forward and implores his Bright Lady, he makes sure he is close to his friend, guarding him as best he can whilst he also searches for sign of the Gmork.
He suddenly has a thought, and reaches into his pack, withdrawing a horn. Blowing on the horn he wills the Gmork to be the only one that can hear the blast. His hope is to startle it into revealing itself to those with watchful eyes.
The Faerie Fire flashes between the buildings, but nothing else happens. There's nothing between them. When Rum blows his horn, however, there is a snarl further off, maybe two or three hundred feet deeper into the city. The Gmork's voice is so disembodied and ethereal when it speaks that it makes it hard to pinpoint the exact distance...but at least they can tell it's not close anymore.
"A valiant effort." Comes the whisper through the darkness of the city. Lightning flickers between three different buildings in the distance. "But ssurely you can do better?"
"Gmork appears to be scared and unsure of itself, for it lacks the confidence to stand and fight! ... Shall we continue on, fellow warriors?" Lady Kaede offers up to the group.
"Aye, I suppose if Gmork won't come to us, we should seek him. I had hoped we could draw him to the open." Wo-Dan checks to be sure his lamp is facing forwards and readies his weapons.
"I dislike the games as well, fellow Remnants. This Gmork relies on fraying the tempers and patience of it's foes and making them rush in to fight on it's terms. If we simply stick to open areas with the most light, it will either be forced to wait or lose patience itself and come to meet us", he suggests as he scans the building further into the city.
"Let's move on, as you suggest Lady Kaede, but perhaps not seek too hard. If we can make it to our destination before night falls proper, we could turn the tables on the Gmork if it follows us".
A thought occurs to him then, "Do we have any means to view our route from the sky? That would reveal ambush points that we could circumvent or plan for. Failing that, did we bring a map?".
Jek is not happy. That coward didn't fall for his magnificent ruse. He nods along to the suggestion of just continuing on for now.
"I'm not a very good hunter, but I know that's what Gmork is doing, hunting us. Anyone else more experienced in that area?" Jek will ask quietly as they travel.
To Rum "I don't really have a way to look at things from above. Sorry."
To Wo-Dan "The map was of the Underdark mostly, here, lets take a look." He pulls it out to see if there is any information about Spook City on the map
"I have a little skill in tracking, friend Jek. If we want to go from prey to hunter, we have to get ahead of the Gmork, set a trap. Beyond that we would need to head into the buildings searching, but that is what it wants and deviates us from our purpose", he whispers back.
