Lord Commander Didymus bounces along happily from his position atop Ambrosius and listens to the group as they talk and banter amongst themselves. He doesn't speak again until Delphinium begins asking his questions.
"Just at the end of the Battle of the Goblin City!" Didymus says with a nod of his head. "I was so gallant when I lead the charge of the Knights of Yore and the Horned Beasts against the Goblin insurrection that King Jareth himself bestowed the honor upon me, just as he had personally knighted me years before. The Fairies are their own entity. They're people of the Labyrinth, protected by the united military that is within my care. None of them have tried to join our ranks. I believe this is because they were so dastardly and blood thirsty before the Labyrinth was...well...rebuilt, as it were. The Fairies...I don't know what wrong with them. I suppose they were just trying to show how keen their smell was. Reconstruction hasn't been too bad. There are many Goblins within the Goblin City, and more have returned home after the battle and the dismissal of the Usurper. It is unfortunate, however, that we still hear of many Goblins who live outside the walls of the Labyrinth who are still a part of this 'Imperial Army', whatever that is. If I could take my leave of the Labyrinth I would use my mighty jaws and fancy sword place to ripthemassunderasItreaduponthebrokenbodiesoftheirfallenandrevelinthelamentationsoftheirwomen!"
The little Lupine breaks into a fit of barking and howling as he works himself into a near frenzy at the thought of the fight. Then he coughs and composes himself.
"I am sorry that the lot of you had to see that. Things have been too quiet as of late and I fear I have pent up aggressions."
They reach the borders of the Goblin City within the course of an hour and begin down the main thoroughfare that bisects the city and leads up to the portcullis that protects the central keep, the Goblin King's castle. Shoddily built houses seem to have been refurbished and built better, while that which was destroyed during the battle have groups of Goblins who are keen to show off their newly learned carpentry and masonry skills as they build houses that are fit for anyone to live in. Ornate. Strong. Bastions of prosperity. Happy guards stroll the streets and wave enthusiastically at the group. One Goblin woman throws a basket full of flowers out for them to walk on and proclaims them as the 'emancipators'. A flock of giant chickens picks gently along the edges of a vegetable garden off to the side of the road and none of them act as though they feel the need to attack. The vines that had previously been growing up the sides of houses are now pocked with bright pink and yellow flowers.
"I finally see the madness you spoke so oft of," says Dageron to the Dawn Guard, "sane Goblins would never choose to live as Humans do. Truly disturbing."
Ward smiles at the changes as they walk, then laughs when Dageron speaks “oh, while I am happy that it is, calmer here I do wish I could have shown you what it was before. Eyeballs on vines, magical mazes, illicit doors. Was quite the adventure to get through this place.” Ward laughs, then looking at all the homes turns to Didymus “This rebuilding, would there be potentially room for refugees? There was a town destroyed in the battle against the Red Bull, and this place if there hasn’t been a place made for them yet could work. “Ward asks

Travin immediately begins looking round for other junk people, or just trash piles in street corners where his kin may be resting, "is there trades? Shopses? Travin only sees homes" he asks sir didymus.
As the goblin throws flowers in front of the group, Travin thanks her happily in Goblish and stoops to pick a few up before unceremoniously munching on them.

Delphinium listens to his good friend and when they suddenly get so vicious Delph seems a bit confused. Is something affecting their friend too? Luckily delphinium has lots of plans and ideas to help their friend pent excess energy but for some reason they can't help shake the idea that it was more then just extra energy. Delphinium would get many answers form the goblin king though. For now, "Oh, quite alright Sir Didymus. Especially with such a polite apology after. It must be frustrating to see such evils outside the walls but to have such good defenses those evils leave you alone. A testament to your amazing leadership skills. I was expecting you all to be having to defend against the enemy at your walls regularly. It is heartening to hear that is not the case. I am glad the fairies of the labyrinth are better and settling in. it sounds like they are fairies of flowers and peace. Keepers of beauty if they are so inclined to stay out of conflict. I can only imagine what happened to them."
Delphinium offers polite conversation knowing that Jerath will be answering a lot of their other questions soon. The fairy is delighted to see that the goblins have become peaceful and changed what they were. A delight. Change is important. More so in nature then anywhere else but its heartening to see here. Perhaps with time they will be like the fey queens with kingdoms of their own and delighting in the trade and merriment that comes from mixing cultures and people. The fairy does scowl at Dageron though. They scold them, "Dag, is it so crazy to want to be different? To want to emulate the happiness of others? You say it is madness for goblins to live like humans. I say it is madness to never change. To never be different. How many of your precious humans would be where they are now if they never left their caves? Never created fire. Never made the sword. You don't see madness Dag. You express fear. Fear that change will threaten you. That goblins could be better at being human then humans. Don't call it madness when they wish for something new. Something better for themselves."
Delphinium gleefully greets every friendly goblin. They compliment the carpentry of the goblins learning the new trade. They smiles at the guards keeping peace. They fly to catch one of the flowers the goblin lady throws. The fairy then presents the flower to Dageron. "What madness is in this?" While the fairy is looking around the newly forming city they seem to be looking for something else here. Their eyes darting around as if expecting something. They are definitely trying to see something else in this city.
Dageron looks momentarily wary of the small Fey creature, unsure of its mind. "You know that I am a Hobgoblin, correct? Your kind do distinguish between the non-Fey races, I hope. Humans, unlike even Goblins, over breed and spread. They kill everything they cannot control. Goblins, Hobgoblins, and the Hard Races, self-regulate our numbers. We do all we can to stem the Human scourge, but they are adaptive. It is their only noble trait. As to change, and Goblins emulating Humans, it is madness. Their lust and greed should not be emulated by other races."
"I don't pay attention to politics. Dad says I should but its so boring! This race hates that race because blah blah blah. This one hates that one because duh! So on and so forth. I stand by my statement. Change is good. I know you are hobgoblin. I find it funny you serve a human but hate them so. I thought you saw them in a more positive light. That explains why you are often so grumpy though. You are bound by your word to serve who you view as your enemy. That's very polite of you, and very fey. I will take that into consideration going forward. My opinion of you was very very poor before hand. Now I see why you act the way you do. Why you suggest the destruction of the land and people here. I have much more respect for you now." the fairy seems to smile in approval of Dageron.
"Hate them? No. Their race has its place in the great order. But, it is a far less significant place than they can ever accept, and not one of lofty virtues. They are the destroyers. Dragons are the highest race, and below them, the lost races such as Unicorns. Somewhere below them are Elves, who are the only truly ancient populous race, then other long-lived Fey. Hobgoblins and Humans exist at or near the same tier, actually, and Goblins below us both. Where theirs is a race of destruction and excess, mine is of attrition and sacrifice. Thier divine gift, as mentioned, is adaptability, of which they are effortless masters. Ours is discipline. We are practically born knowing our duty, and are driven to enforce order upon others. Such likely seems strange to a Fey, but my concern is practical. There cannot be multiple populous races of destroyers. If other races sought to mimic the greed and hubris that drives Human societies, then the great balance would be broken. They are the foil to the harmony of all other races."
"Ah, I see. So you believe nothing should change. That everything and everyone must fill their roles. That they should not strive to be better or change their circumstances. In your grand balance, where does the corruption outside fit? By your logic the goblins should be destroyers. They should not have lofty virtues. So, they should be helping the corruption outside as per your own words. For I have never seen anything less touched by lofty virtue and nothing more destructive then that. No... I believe they change because it makes them happy. Helps them feel safe. I believe they change in response to things. Your world is filled with imbalances that nature changes to and adapts with. I find it interesting you rank the races. I probably wouldn't like having a dragon boss me around though. Is it the hierarchy you fear changing? That if goblins become smart and peaceful that they may supplant you? Fey find your world so fascinating because it changes! How interesting would your world be if the goblins suddenly became a common and welcomed race? Would some other race become evil from jealousy because of it? Perhaps, I know I'd love to find out."
Taking the theological discussion in earnest, Dageron replies, "My people were once a proud nation, now we are broken and swallowed by the machinations of others. The sun rises, rain comes, the sun sets. Change is a constant. If my descendents survive, they will call themselves something other than Aureki. If I survive, I may be left with no one else to serve but Humans. But all of those changes occur within the balance. The word you chose - corruption - is why I fight with these Humans instead of against them. There are many planes, and places undefined. These are also outside the balance. These chaotic changes come from some place where they are likely normal. Part of some other balance to which we do not belong. That is why burning trees and towns seemed immediately sensible to me. Those that we saw were not natural. This new age is the crashing of those realities together, and the forces within desperately grappling for a new order. In the best scenario, we undo what is done. In the worst, the corruption erases all that once was, supplanting it.
"Goblins wanting to live as Humans is insanity because it defies their very nature. To live your fullest, while wholly true to your nature, is a life of meaning and significance. Look at the Fey, they are practically constructs to the ordered chaos of their realm. They so completely embody the balance to which they are attuned that for many their very personalities change with the seasons. If you were to break a vow, you would crumble as a being of self worth. To deny a balance exist, and ones role within it, is what I mean by insanity. The individual can change all they need to in order to survive, so long as their own survival dies not come at the cost of all other things. That is why I grew angry with Adam. Not because he was being Human, but because he was being too Human. He was unwilling to change within this system at a time when all others hang in the balance - to adapt, as Humans are uniquely designed to do. He still refuses.
"If these are the last Goblins in the world, and we somehow survive, then the balance that allowed so many races to thrive for untold ages will diminish even further. Perhaps to the point we all unravel."
Listening to the back and forth between Dageron and Delph, Travin butts in, muttering toward Dag, "to unravels is not the end of the world, sometimes it cans be quite pleasant hmm? Daggy missed two big glaring faultses, yeh yeh. Races have their places but there is chaos in individuals hmmm? And two, storytellers are above all yeh yeh" Travin beams a toothy grin at the hobgoblin.
Dageron nods politely at Travin, "I agree - in regard to individuals. But not to matters of the greater balance. I am actually such an example, as my path is far from any other of my kind. Certainly chaos has helped unravel much of my life. But not so for all of my race. You are Human, yes? Yet Humanity will not continue in manner that reflects you. These Goblins have changed en mass, not just as individuals."
"Travin is humans, but Travin is special yeh yeh, Travin is learnings to be more human hmm? Because Travin cannot go homes like this, cannot be with Travin's family, Mother, Father, Gavin, baby Mavin." Travin looks on to the folk of goblin city, their home making and their family lives
Johnathan looks on guard as the fox starts barking none sense. Great. Even the local wildlife is losing it. He glares at the goblins as they make their way deeper into the labyrinth. They seemed so normal, happy even. But despite this harmony, Johnathan couldn’t shake the image of the goblin attack that was partial responsible for his death. He knows what these creatures are capable of. All too well.
He listens to the others comment on this and adds. Dageron has an interesting view on the world. Although I don’t agree that races are in tiers, there are some to be wary of. I shouldn’t have to remind everyone that it was goblins that killed the unicorn. I saw it myself, I know what they can do. Johnathan seems to have a hint of anger as he say this. These ones may try to change, but there are many that still want chaos in this world. Also how do we know the labyrinth hasn’t forced this peaceful nature on them? This place has many ways to alter the behaviours of creatures, it is possible Jareth wanted this peace.
I don’t think I will ever trust goblins. I don’t care how much they change, how much good they do. Deep down I know they helped bring this world to ruin, so I can never trust them.
"Hmm... so you do not believe cultures can change then? I am unfortunately not very familiar with your people so I cannot give examples of them however, elves, humans, dwarves and some others I can. Wood, elves, high elves, sea elves, drow. Hill dwarves, mountain dwarves, dark dwarves. Humans in more variety then you can count. Some good, some evil, all different and none in small numbers like you say. You do not understand what it means to change. Perhaps now is the time goblins have variations just like other races. Perhaps this is the birth of Labyrinth Goblins and they are distinct from other types of goblins for their kinder nature and hospitality. I bet they are every bit as vicious if you anger them. Would it make you feel better if you saw this? I suggest you steal from them and see what happens. Perhaps they gained loyalty to friends and allies finding it to their liking when they receive help from others. However, Johnathan makes a really good point! These goblins could be enchanted. I think it would be far more interesting to see a city of goblins trying to change their culture but Johnathan may be right. The magic that Jareth controls in these lands might be able to do that. If he did... cool! Let's shake up this balance of yours. It sounds incredibly boring."
Delphinium seems to find some of what he is looking for as he looks around. He eventually stops once he spots it and seems both concerned and curious. he nods then looks to Johnathan. "It was the work of one goblin Johnathan. One that was directed by the dark lord and far more evil forces. One I will remind you was changed. One we worked hard to change again for Travin. You blame goblins? I blame the one who wanted the death of the unicorn. One which we should really revive soon. I bet Jerath has a way to my home for us to do so. Hmm... I wonder if he's friends with my dad."
Delphinium realizing what they said when Travin begins to wonder off flies right over to the troubled man, hovers right in front of their face to block their way and boops their nose. Then, once they have their attention, says, "Sorry Travin. I was speaking without consideration of your feelings. To be clear. It wasn't your brother who wanted it. It was those who directed him. They were the real culprits. It is the manipulator of them I blame. I doubt Gavin even considered the unicorn before they were manipulated. Now, stick with us. We got lots of work to do and you're amazing at making things interesting." The tiny fairy offers a tiny hand to lead Travin back to the group.
It’s a personal feeling Delph, I didn’t say it was a good view or even a correct view on the world. Just some things can’t be forgiven so easily. Plus the goblins that attacked the unicorn seemed able to make their own minds, I didn’t see Blix anywhere near that battle to control or monitor them. I guess I’m just stuck in the past. Johnathan goes quiet at this lasts sentence. He stares into the distance for a moment before looking to see Travin has gone. Where did Travin?
Shavaris gets down to Travin's level, though now that he is a bit taller it is an odd squat, so she stands back up and places a hand under his chin briefly to get him to look up to her.
"Travin, who are you talking to?"
After chatting with him, she hears Dageron and Delph get into a deep conversation that she wants no part of and slinks away...
A few moments later she emerges out of a back alleyway, and grabs the attention of the party. "So I was trying to find survivors, whether from Falcon Crest,"she dodges a look in Adams direction, then continues, "or anyone else from Eternia that might have come to the labyrinth to seek help. I found two human men and an elf. The men have baskets, seem to be peddling food as they walk around town."
She shrugs, "But the elf, she appeared to be a high elf, was talking to a goblin about assistance she needs with getting her house modified, apparently she's too tall for her ceilings." Shavaris smiles a bit at this, "But seems like at least she is new in town. Hopefully there are others, and its uplifting to see the goblins take them in and help."
Travin listens to Delphinium and nods with a smile, he returns to the group quite quickly, and as delphinium leads him back Travin offers up a coin purse, "Travin thinks the goblins changeded, likes Daggy said, hmmm? Travin just stole this from a gobbin, like Fireflight asked, yeh yeh! and the gobbin did nots try to kill Travin, hmm, Travin is too fast and sneaky! Yeh!"
Travin wanders off.
"So I was trying to find survivors, whether from Falcon Crest," she dodges a look in Adams direction, then continues, "or anyone else from Eternia that might have come to the labyrinth to seek help.
Yeh!"
