Samir is pleasantly surprised when he and Joren manage to unlock the passageway - in truth he had begin to doubt its existence. He claps a tired hand on the bigger man's shoulder, smiling despite his fatigue.
He turns, however, at the sudden explosion of voices behind him, confusion and anxiety written on his features. Neither Ashley nor the stranger were making any sense at the moment, and he could only stare between them. His interest, however, is drawn to the strange symbol and the staple that was produced. Screwing up his courage, he steps forward, purposefully moving between the two and standing near Marion. His hand moves to adjust his glasses nervously, an act mirrored by the slight quiver in his voice.
"Please, everyone, let- let's keep our heads here. Surely there is some explanation here, no matter how strange it may be. But we jave faced death together, and I feel like, like we should give each other the benefit of the doubt, yes? Excuse me Marion, let me just..."
He pushes past the knight, picking up the staple in his fingers deftly, and bringing it up close to his eyes to examine it. After a moment he moves closer to the ratman itself, his aversion to the abomination overcome by his curiosity and need to know. Crouched down on his haunches, he adjusts his glasses once more as he examines the sigil on the human head before him.

As the ringing and buzzing enter her mind, she reaches up and clutches her head. She doesn't understand what is going on and the anger inside her intensifies. "Reading your mind?!? How..how dare you! You're, you're in my head! GET OUT!!!"
Ashley is screaming now and in this small room it reverberates and weighs heavily on all present. It rings in everyones ears and her voice continues to crackle. The anger, the exhaustion, the rats... it all becomes too much for the young genasi. She starts to waver as she stands, her eyes, rolling around in her head. They roll back and she whispers, "Joren..." being the one that she trusts and knows the most in the group and falls, unconscious, to the floor in a heap.

As the debate builds Marion continues to hold the Goliath's gaze, but when Samir speaks of reason she relaxes a little, realising how aggressively she has come on. Before she gets a chance Ashley cries out once more and as Marion turns her head she watches the woman waver and begin to collapse. Despite her weariness instinct drives her and she dives in her direction hoping to catch Ashley before she hits the ground.
Without knowing better here is a Dex check to see if Marion can react quickly enough 3
Joren looks back and forth between the two arguing, unable to make heads nor tails of what is going on
Samir looks at the symbol on the staple, and then at the one on the man's head. In his studies, he had learned of several different theories and methods of drawing up magic and channeling it towards particular applications through the use of runes and wards, and had even learned some of the rune languages himself. Some say the first rune languages were created by the long-gone high elves of yore, others that they are the written form of the language of whatever divine being or beings created the universe.
He hypothesizes that this must be something along those lines, but the symbols themselves are entirely alien to him. Were they particularly rare symbols from a method he had encountered in the Nos'Argo archives, or from a foreign language altogether? Samir cannot tell with just what he sees here.

(Nat 1) Seeing Ashley beginning to sway, Marion tries to flick open the straps holding her shield in place to free up the arm, but her weary fingers fumble and she gives up. With Ashley beginning to fall, Marion has to take an awkward dive to get there in time and lands awkwardly on her shield arm as she does. She takes 2 points of bludgeoning damage, but manages to spare Ashley from hitting her head on the way down.

Joren reacts viscerally to Ashley's calling out and also instinctively moves to intercept his fire genasi friend's fall as Marion is doing. In a possibly rash move he will perhaps regret later, he summons his echo to stand 5' from Vilus, not doing anything, just standing there.
Dex check at disadvantage if necessary to catch Ashley: 15
"Nothing but trust, friendship and bright, fiery joy this woman has brought since I met her, and crossing the mountains with the rest of us. She has saved our lives and fought valiantly. Not one unkind action or word has she been doing or saying, the time entire."
Turning to Vilus, clearly willing himself to be still. "I am making no assumptions about you sir. But please be speaking plainly about why you seem to be making assumptions about her. Or anything you are suspecting she is doing. Too much strangeness lingering here there is. Something may be happening to all of us without our knowing."
With Malachi and Samir close to the rat-body, Vilus moves out of their arms reach, his back to the wall, moving but making sure not to get up from his sitting position or make any moves that might provoke reflexive physical aggression.
He watches as they both look over the body, the runes, making deductions and figuring things out, He then watches as Marion casts a glance back at Ashley and without hesitation throws herself in the way to catch the Genasi before she hurts herself, then he notices Joren doing the same and flinches slightly as the echo appears in front of him. Vilus re assesses the situation, appearing to relax... slightly, and speaking with less aggression now, replaced with an intensely stern practicality. He answers Joren's question first, "She spoke the words I was thinking, as if she plucked them right out of my head, It may have been something to do with me, I've been... Strange, recently. but I also can't be sure, I..." He trails off in thought for a moment and shakes his head back to reality, then remembers his own inquiries.
Vilus continues "Either way it doesn't look like I'm getting any answers right now.. but It also seems that we need rest, I agree with this one" he points at Samir, his hand now empty of the dagger that had previously occupied it"a truce for now, I'll keep to myself until we can all talk properly.. Oh and you can call me Silas, I assume you all have names too?"
At the name 'Silas' the Goliaths skin begins to shimmer and crackle with a purplish static which leaves his skin tinted green on his hands and under his hood, He winces and grabs his head once more obviously in pain, he doubles over holding his head in his lap and once he regains posture and looks to the group for an answer to his question, they see a Half-Orc similar to Samir instead of a Goliath.

Malachi takes a step back from the goliath as he begins his strange verbal assault on Ashley. He looks on in surprise as she collapses from exhaustion and both Joren and Marion jump to her aid.
Insight (against Vilus deception check) 9.
Malachi narrows his eyes and looks at the goliath/half-orc. “Silas, is it? I am Malachi. Quite fortunate of you to come along as you did. Which of these are the real you, goliath or half-orc, and why do you attempt to deceive us?” He has a lot of questions for the newcomer, but he tries to pace them, and to create a common ground between them. He doesn’t want to create another enemy if he can avoid it. “You are not our enemy, and we hunt no one. You say she read your thoughts? Interesting. I heard your voice in my head earlier as well, you were looking for the passageway. How long has this been happening; can you read the thoughts of others?”
Vilus looks down upon his now Half Orc form and sighs in exasperation, "I'm... erm, Goliath. But this, I don't know what this is, honestly, you have to believe me... But y-you heard it too? Heard me? No, no, no, then it must be me, you've got it wrong, I've not been reading thoughts, maybe I've been.. I don't know" frustrated and tired culminating in anger, Vilus closes up, drawing in his knees and creating a barrier with his huge green arms "I deceive because I'm being hunted, I can't be too careful, I think I was poisoned on my way here, I can't trust those I thought were closest to me anymore, I'm completely alone with a mad old god rampaging through my head and body, only telling me to be here with no context or reason. That's all I know, and it hurts, all of it hurts!" His words snarl from his mouth, he sniffs and spits on the dirt floor next to him, then let's out a large exhale trying to steady his breathing. "I need... rest"
Samir sighs quietly, his tired brain unable to narrow down the providence or origing of the runes any further. He turns back as Ashley collapses, concern on his face as he watches Marion and Joren both moveto catch her, only realizing afterwards that he had held his breath in that moment of seeing her fall. Breathing once more, he stows the staple in his shirt pocket, to be examined later and turns to the man calling himself Silas. He watches as the form of the Goliath shifts into the half-orc, fascinated and concerned all at once. Uncontrolled magic can be dangerous for all of them. When he speaks, his voice is soft, calm, as if he spoke with an upset animal, and he keeps himself as still and unthreatening as he can.
"Silas then. My name is Samir. I don't know what's going on with you, Silas, but I can tell that you are in significant distress. When I'm not being chased by horrible chimeric monstrosities, Silas, I spend a lot of time researching things and doing studies. Maybe I can help you understand what is happening, and I would be more than happy to do that. I think we all need some rest first, however. We are all exhausted and out of sorts. If you can help us find someplace that we can all recover, then I promise that I will do whatever I can to help you in turn. Is that acceptable, Silas?"
Joren first, before all else, makes sure Ashley is safe and comfortably resting, putting his cloak over her and tucking one folded end of it under her head as a pillow. He has another brief waking dream of the cloak catching fire but smiles it away. He decides he doesn't know what to make of Silas and merely introduces himself in a neutral tone, letting his echo go for now. He trusts the others to understand what is going on more than he trusts himself. He's glad Samir and Malachi are doing the talking, and perhaps Marion as well. He relents a bit. Perhaps he should not be so harsh with the Goliath turned half-orc. Don't judge what you don't understand, his lady mother had told him.
After all, I know well what it is like to be an outsider, even in my homeland...
Finally, as the others are talking, he turns his attention to the door to the room they came from. He tries to discern whether there is any obvious means to bar it or hold it securely closed if we choose to rest here. Perception at disadvantage: 5.
If he doesn't see any obvious means to do so, he means to ask the others. Especially Samir, who seems so bafflingly ingenious with his inventions and contraptions, if he can think of a way. (Once Samir and others are done with their conversation with Silas of course).
"Once we are securing the door, we can be speaking of who, if anyone, will be keeping watch and when," he says, though he feels like passing out himself.
(No perception needed to see this) The first thing that occurs to Joren is that something like a weapon or a beam of wood could be wedged through the handle and against the door frame. That would at least hold off an intruder for a time. He doesn’t know, however, if anyone else could come up with a more secure solution. Turning back and to the room, he does remember the cots in the corner which may make for more comfortable rest for Ashley
Jorengets a cot ready and carries Ashley as gently as he can to it. He'd rather not use his Greatsword to bar the door. Will a Handaxe do? Does he see any beams of wood? If not, and no one has any better ideas, he can use the axe to chop off part of one of the shelves to use as a beam.
As Joren works to secure the doorway back to the main room, Malachi looks at the passageway beyond the open bookshelf to determine if there is a way to secure it from this side so it could not be opened. Investigation 4.
Yes, we all need rest, but is this the best time or place? If I remember correctly, the necklace had 8 ear on it. Even if they are all dead out there, there are two others somewhere. And why were they separated on the necklace?"
He pauses, looks at the ratman’s corpse again, then looks back to the door Joren is working to secure. “I would feel better if we had the innkeeper with us. Do we know how far into the room he is, can we find him and drag him back? And perhaps we can barricade the door and the bookshelf with some of the items in this room.”
Joren hacks off a table leg with his handaxe and uses it to bar the door. Of course, if they decide to go back out into that room and look for Razmus, he'll unbar it.
"Closing the back passageway, we can by just pushing the shelf back in, opposite of what Samir was doing maybe?"
Looking from Malachi to Samir to Joren as they introduce themselves Vilus nods along in acknowledgement, even thanking Samir for his offer.. whilst Joren is looking for something to bar the door Vilus pulls a crowbar from his bag and slides it into the center of the room for anyone to pass to him "this should hold better, if there are more rat victims then the fact that they tore apart the wooden trapdoor in seconds, means we should protect ourselves with something a little sturdier"
With Ashley looked after Marion returns to the discussion. Watching warily as Silas shifts his form and talks of being hunted. Still undecided as to whether she can trust him or not she eventually decides that there are more important matters at hand at this moment in time. Regardless, she can't help but voice her distrust and let the Goliath know that she is watching, even if it is in a cryptic manner.
"Very well Silas, I shall take you at your word, though if you are being hunted and it endangers us with your presence here it would do well to warn us. I am Marion Sithiche, Knight-Errant of the Order of the Blue Rose, and I am sworn to defend the world from those who would turn magic to malicious use."
Taking a breath she calms herself before putting other matters to the front of her mind, her manner relaxing somewhat and the determined focus to see them through returning.
"I can aid you with an affliction such as poison, though I will need proper rest before I am strong enough to deal with it. While I think a brief respite is necessary, is it wise for us to remain here for long?
I feel we risk much by tarrying too long. What we do understand of the situation is unclear at best, only the Lady knows if they will rise again from beyond the door, and if Malachi's estimate is correct more of these twisted souls may lurk elsewhere. It does not sit well with me to remain between an unclear danger and the entirely unknown. I would rather we illuminated the unknown before we fall foul of worse.
Let us tend to our wounds, but not linger over long."
With that Marion returns to Ashley's side and examines the young woman to see if there is anything she can do to aid her.
Samir nods, turning his attention to Joren's efforts to barricade the door. It strikes him as a good idea, even if they were to be moving on immediately, to do so. "Here, Joren, maybe these." Digging into his seemingly bottomless satchel, the artificer produces a quartet of iron stakes with rings on the opposite end of the points. "Pitons. Made for being hammered into rocks and cracks to aid in climbing, but I figure they can be used to wedge into the cracks around the door as well. This should, basically, um, squeeze the door so tightly against the frame that it would take a tremendous effort in order to open it from either side. I have more that we can use to possibly wedge the shelving in place as well, so that both exits are secured."
Sudden exhaustion sets in and he finds himself quickly sitting on the floor, his back to a wall. With a quiet grunt he sets the pitons and a hammer on the ground in front of him for whoever might wish to use them. One hand moves to where the rat creature wounded him earlier, pressing against it as the pain suddenly flares up, causing him to wince. In the adrenaline and chaos it had been pushed from the forefront of his mind, but now that things seemed to be growing quieter, the fiery burn of the claw marks came back with a vengeance.
"Regardless, I fear that without at least some rest, I will be less than useless to the rest of you. I am... I am not accustomed to these sort of activities..."

Vilus grunts and nods in appreciation of the introduction.
Samir nods, turning his attention to Joren's efforts to barricade the door. It strikes him as a good idea, even if they were to be moving on immediately, to do so. "Here, Joren, maybe these." One hand moves to where the rat creature wounded him earlier, pressing against it as the pain suddenly flares up, causing him to wince.
