Ashley starts smacking her friends near her (not on the face lol) and crying out "listen, listen!! Something else is coming... we need to help!" And she starts wiggling her way down the stands to try and at least find the entrance to the arena. Once she has located it and is near it, she'll start looking around for the sound, trying to decipher what is going on. She debates warning Joren, but then decides against it as she doesn't want to distract him from the yeti.
Ashley looks for a quick entrance but surmises they must all be underground. The only quick way in is to jump down the ten foot drop onto the sand of the arena. She takes but a few seconds to make her way down to the edge. The people around her pull away in surprise as she starts going through the motions and chants of her spell. Looking around the pit, she can tell that all four of the arena's remaining platforms are currently ascending towards the battlefield, and the portcullises are likewise beginning to draw upward.
(Ashley can join into initiative after casting mage armour. Anyone else who makes the DC 17 can also take a move and an action before joining initiative. The platforms will arrive at the end of this round.)
"Something else comes!" Joren's voice booms loud as he continues to address the crowd. "Stand ready, those who can fight. Everyone else take cover."
Overall Persuasion at advantage for Joren's exhortations to the crowd thus far: 16
With his bonus action, Joren summons his echo again, on the opposite side of the Yeti. Representing some timeline in which he had moved laterally in a different direction during the fight. Both half-dwarf and echo circle the monstrosity in melee on opposite ends, trying to confuse it on which is which.
It is the echo's position from which Joren attacks the monstrosity with the flat of his greatsword (non-lethal).
As he fights, he tries to keep an eye on the rising platforms and portcullises and what might emerge. "Any chance one of you can be turning this beast to fight on our side against what is coming?" He glances hopefully up to his companions in the stands.
"You think everything could be a trap." Samir's half-hesrted jab at his friend is all but lost in the noise of the crowd as the half-orc slumps back in his seat. As much as he worries for his friend down in the arena below, Samir finds it difficult to watch the bloodsport on the sands, and it is, perhaps, be ause of this that he notices the rumblings of gears and the clatter of chains that indicate the activation of the lifts.
His eyes widen behind his spectacles, as he sits suddenly upright. Samir glances at his companions, noting Ashley responding as well. He glances at the place where the councilors sit, eyes drawn to the empty seat that Marigold should occupy.
"Um Mal, about that trap..."
Samir is on his feet as Ashley begins making her way towards the arena, instinctively slinging his bag into its customary position. "We have to get these people out of here, I fear we all may be in danger!"
Joren's greatsword catches the back of the yeti's leg, causing it to stumble momentarily to a knee. Blood runs through its matted fur, and it staggers a bit when it rises back up to both of its feet. Confused by the two circling warriors, it spins and strikes out ferociously at random. Joren ducks the first blow, but the second one catches his shoulder while he's off balance, causing him to spin back for a moment. (17 to hit. 5 Slashing + 5 Cold).
Joren's skill and confidence is enough to convince many in the audience to rise uncertainly, looking for the nearest exits.
“Wait, what is going on?”Malachi grabs the note back and slides it into an inside pocket in his jacket as mayhem breaks out. With people taking Joren’s words to heart and streaming towards the exits and Ashley pushing toward the arena floor, the crowd surges around him.
He looks at Samir “Get them to safety? Where? And what are we running from?” He tries to push down toward the front of the stands to stay close to Ashley although he has no idea what is going on.
With a final shuddering clunk, the platforms around the arena lock into place A rattling hiss comes from one entrance, where a giant scorpion crawls out. From the other side, a massive boar emerges, stamping its foot and preparing to charge. From the third gate, a toad the size of a horse leaps out, frosty breath leaking out the sides of its wide mouth. And on the final platform... A group of four uniformed arena employees all tied and bound together helplessly with gags over their moves.
The boar stamps its feet and begins to charge towards the bound employees who had been responsible for keeping it in captivity. Foam froths from the sides of its mouth.
Joren clocks the arriving beasts and bound arena workers as he engages with the Yeti. Must be finishing this first battle quickly to defend them.
"PEOPLE OF TALMOUTH," Joren roars. "WITNESS THE CULTISTS' WORK. MARIGOLD AND HER CRONIES, WEAKENING YOU FOR THEIR INVASION. THOSE WHO CAN FIGHT, DEFEND YOUR CITY AND YOUR FELLOW CITIZENS WITH ME! UNBIND THEM WHILE I KEEP THESE BEASTS OFF YOU."
He flies into a flurry of activity, attacking three times with this greatsword from his echo's position, first missing the Yeti's legs, his balance thrown off by his exhortation to the crowed. Then with Unleash Incarnation, landing a flat-arced stroke against the Yeti's solar plexus to bring its head down, and a third time with Action Surge, feinting low, then spinning to crack the flat of his blade against the Yeti's temple, knocking it out cold. (All attacks non-lethal).
Attack 1: (normal Attack action) To Hit Yeti: 10 (miss) Damage: 12 non-lethal (does not apply)
Attack 3: (Action Surge) To Hit Yeti: 22 (hit) Damage: 12 non-lethal (temple)
Bonus Action: as the Yeti collapses to the ground, Joren sucks in a deep breath, surveying the battlefield (Second Wind), recovering 11 hp for himself.
Movement: Joren himself jogs 30' northwest to try to interpose himself between the onrushing beasts and the captive arena workers, standing just south of them. He moves his echo 25-30' west-northwest to stand in melee position with the giant boar, just north of it.
At the sight of the oversized critters being brought up from the depths, Samir curses and pushes his way to the edge of the stands. He catches himself on the railing, eyes widening as he sees the bound citizens. As the massive boar begins charging towards them, the artificer reaches out with one hand, runes flaring in vibrant blue along the back of his glove. An empty wine bottle, no doubt dropped at the edge of the sands by some inebriated patron, begins to vibrate softly and turn to orient its thick base towards the charging swine. With a hiss of glass on sand, the bottle rockets at the creature and smashes itself to shards against the porcine visage.
Move to the edge of the stands, cast Catapult, 14 damage rolled in Discord
Ashley watches in disbelief as the giant animals start entering the arena. But when the tied up employees enter, she is aghast. Who would do such a thing? "Sh*t! We have to help them, but I'm afraid whoever would be so awful as to tie up these people will be long gone after we help them! This is awful!!"
And she takes off along the edge of the stadium, heading towards the tied employees. Then casting mage hand she directs her spectral hand down to the group and, concentrating hard, unties the rope that binds the four of them together.
Vilus wastes no time moving around the stands to position himself just north east of the captives. "Concentrate on the other creatures, I'll take care of the boar!" He yells out to the others, but he doesn't jump down just yet, he concentrates hard on the giant boar, linking them telepathically, he lets out a stream of the Watcher's consciousness into the boars mind, casting Dissonant Whispers (DC 13 WIS save or take 16 psychic dam) and hoping it is enough to make the boar turn tail and run away from the captives.
Malachi looks at Samir as he sends the wine bottle toward the Giant Boar and says wryly “I hope that was empty, I hate to waste good wine.”
He brings his hands together, the left hand rubbing a ring on his right and then extends his right hand toward the charging boar. A spectral ram’s head charges from the ring toward the boar, attempting to push it away from the captives or at least disrupt its charge. He looks over at the stands next to where Ashley is trying to free the prisoners and encourages those remaining in the crowd “Someone help her free them!”
Attack: 19 Damage: 16
(Using one charge of the Ring of the Ram, on a hit the boar is pushed 5 feet away from Malachi)
The yeti topples and the crowd cheers, but there is a concerned undertone, rather than mindless jubilation. With other creatures arriving, it is clear that something is wrong, which lends more and more credibility to Joren's speech. While some watch with horrified fascination, others bustle towards the exits to either get to safety or to call more guards in. Among those leaving are all of the councilors and their aides.
Using all of her concentration, Ashley nimbly manipulates the rope with her mage hand, quickly disentangling the four captives from one another. Three of them struggle to their feet with their arms still bound, and start running to put as much space between them and the approaching monsters as possible (Full move and dodge actions), but one small halfling remains kneeling, frozen with fear for the moment.
The boar squeals and skids to a stop, shaking broken glass and wine dregs from its eyes, fresh blooding matting its fur. By the time it clears its vision, it sees its path forward now blocked by Joren and his echo. Insidious whispers begin to fill its head, and it rears up on its hind legs in a panic, preparing to turn and run, but then a spectral ram's head slams into its side, caving in ribs and breaking its spine. The boar crumples to the ground.
Marion rushes over to the side and lifts her legs over the railing, lowering herself down to the ground inn the arena with a thud, and moves to get in front of the captives fleeing her way, and then watches in horror as the Giant Frost toad covers the long distance between it and Joren in four swift leaps. (Giant Frost Toad took Dash action). But Joren's attention is split between the toad and the large scorpion on the other side of him, coming for him and the terrified halfling he is guarding. (Full move and a held action)
Joren grits his teeth as he watches the giant boar wiped out by his companions' spells, but the giant scorpion and giant ice toad close this distance to him and the captives with unfortunate speed. He feels the wintry bite of the frigid amphibian's cold aura.
He yells to his friends (and to any in the stands who can attack at range): "Well done focusing fire. Everyone targeting the ice toad next! That cold aura is no good for any of us, least of all the captives. Except, speaking of which, thank you, Ash!" He makes eye contact with the Fire Genasi in the stands and gestures to the still kneeling captive with his chin. "Can you, or anyone in the stands, be getting the halfling to safety? Or Marion?" He looks hopefully at the paladin of the Blue Lady now in the arena. "Or maybe finding a way to hold the scorpion in place? I am not liking the look of that stinger..."
Joren himself stands his ground, staying exactly where he is, 10' away from the scorpion, seeing the giant arthropod's readied attack. With his free action, he waves his greatsword, trying to draw the creature's attention so when it attacks, it chooses Joren. But he steps no closer. (If he can occupy the same space as the kneeling halfling, he moves once space laterally north to stand over them protectively, but if not, he stays put).
Instead, he attacks the giant ice toad from his echo's position. Lethally this time, since he does not know whether the frigid creature's cold aura might be just as deadly when it is unconscious. Swinging his greatsword in desperate, reckless arcs. Digging deep to draw on his last reserves of dunamis with his echo to attack quickly a second time with a sweeping backhand (second and final Unleash Incarnation for the day).
Attack 1: from echo's position on ice toad: Greatsword to hit: 14 Greatsword damage: 16 slashing (max)
Attack 2: (Unleash Incarnation) from echo's position on ice toad: Greatsword to hit: 16 Greatsword damage: 11 slashing
(No bonus action).
The echo then circles around to the other (south) side of the toad so it would have to leave the echo's threatened area to close with Joren.
Malachi looks on with satisfaction as the Giant Boar is crushed beneath the combined attacks of the team, giving the captives a moment to scramble to safety. As he sees the halfling, frozen with fear in the path of the Giant Scorpion, he reaches out with his mind to calm emotions to remove the fear and strengthen the halfling’s resolve.
He also uses the connection to send a telepathic message, a small voice appearing in the back of the halfling's mind “Run! Move to the east wall of the arena with the others for rescue.” He looks up to his companions “Can anyone drop a rope to help them climb out?”
Samir scrambles along the arena rails, getting as close to the civilians' position as possible. As he runs, his hand dives into the seemingly bottomless bag that never leaves his possession, and almost immediately comes out with a surprisingly lengthy coil of rope. Desperately, he looks for a place to tie it off so it can be tossed over to the civilians.
"Watch out for the toad! It has some kind of freezing aura!"
The shaking in the halflings legs stops. Watching the scorpion and the toad warily, but no longer frozen by fear, he rises to his feet and starts to run over towards the others who crowd around the rope being lowered to them by Samir. With a few quick motions, Samir assembles the sturdiest knot that he can, securing the rope to the railing.
The employees at the bottom of the rope start trying to untie their hands, but with little success
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Ashley grins as Joren thanks her and she waves at her friend. Seeing that Samir was on rope duty, she looks to the two remaining foes to see what can be done. Noting the situation going on with halfling, Joren and the scorpion, she decides to head that direction and runs her 30' around the edge of the arena towards them.
Once closer, she holds out her hand, palm up with fingers tightening like they are gripping something. Mumbling under her breath, the earth between the giant scorpion and the halfling starts rumbling, moving.. taking shape. Soon a giant hand emerges from the earth and reaches for the giant scorpion to take hold of the creature. STR save of 14 or it will be restrained and crushed some - 3 bludgeoning damage.
Vilus starts doing the same as Samir, tying off his own rope to the railing to give the employees more escape options, he then descends down it. "Over here too! quick as you can!" Vilus moves 10ft out toward the toad and pulls out two of his daggers holding them one in each hand prepared to rush the toad.
Marion keeps her body between the captives and the monsters, turning around and starting to work at untying one of their hands. As soon as she is done, the first one starts working on the next while Marion resumes a defensive position. Soon, they are all unbound and start making their way up the side, two to each rope.
The Ice Toad lunges forward at Marion, avoiding the echo's reactionary swing, but then itself misses its attack on Marion
Meanwhile, the scorpion breaks through the earthen hand grasping at it and darts forward at Joren, striking out wildly with its claws and stinger, but Joren's new armour just barely deflects the first claw. After that, Joren is able to weave out of the way of all the other clumsy attacks. The scorpion decides to change tact and tries to move past the heavily armoured foe for the more vulnerable fleshy-looking one behind him. It moves towards Vilus.
Ashley starts smacking her friends near her (not on the face lol) and crying out "listen, listen!! Something else is coming... we need to help!" She does however, prepare herself though.
