As Joren and Marion look on at the bear, it stoops to grab the yoke in the middle. Hoisting it easily over the shoulder not bearing the dear, the creature begins to move forward, not toward the two onlookers, but toward the inn. It makes brief eye contact before looking back at its destination.
Joren feels surreal. As if this must be a continuation of his dreams and nightmares. Is this bear awakened somehow?
He looks to Marion for just a moment or two in case the knight errant wishes to speak first. Only if she does not, he would walk parallel to the bear in as non-threatening and friendly a posture as possible, giving them 50' of distance if viable. Not yet summoning his echo. Speaking in his own somewhat broken Common, friendly and earnest:
"Friend Bear," (Joren feels more than a little ridiculous), "speaking our language, are you able?" I can barely speak the language myself, and now I'm asking them to bearly speak the language...
If he gets any indication of acknowledgement from the creature, he continues: "Assisting you, may we be? We ourselves and some friends in the Inn are also needing some help and information perhaps. May we be talking? Perhaps we may be helping each other." It is all Joren can do not to splutter at the strangeness of it all.
The bear slows and sighs, then turns it's head slightly to engage Joren "maybe fetch some fire wood Joren, we'll need to cook up this meat for everyone somehow" the bear responds in Silas's voice as it continues walking towards the inn, the deer and water yoke still weighing it down.
Joren shakes his head once he realizes who it is. Clearly Silas could take many forms. Goliath, Minotaur, Bear.
Could he not have been telling us what he was doing when leaving? And was the disguise truly necessary once walking back to the Inn? Maybe next time he will be changing into a beholder or a basilisk... (Joren does not actually understand how the Disguise Self spell works, or its limitations).
Joren is ready to look for or chop some firewood, with his handaxe if need be. But he looks first to Marion to see how she is taking the revelation.
Marion does not make it clear right away what exactly she thinks of the ‘Silas’ the bear carrying his burden to the inn, though as he passes her, she wordlessly offers to take either the water or the dear off his hands to split the load. For now her thoughts are hers alone.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Silas unburdens himself of the yoke, placing it carefully by Marion's feet, then turning toward the inn he proceeds. It is apparent that he has neither noticed the rats by the shed, nor Joren and Marion's concern toward them.
As he enters the Inn he does so as stealthily as possible 17 in an attempt to not wake anyone resting, to the more awake and observant members of the Inn he gives a thumbs up and a smile persuading them as to his lack of aggression 18 as he cannot currently de-bear himself wilfully,
Silas will try to make his way through the tavern area and into the kitchen/food prep area to look for sharp knives and sharpening tools, unless somebody stops him.

Many people have moved up the rooms at this point, or found various nooks to rest in downstairs. Vilus enters fairly quietly, reaching up to still the bell hooked up to the door so as not to disturb anyone. He then makes his way around behind the bar where he comes face to face with 6 ex-captives, all looking a bit jumpy. They look up to see a bear with a bloody fresh kill. Vilus for his part is about to speak to reassure them when a dry tickle in his throat causes him to cough instead. A disconcerting sound to the onlookers given the circumstances. All 6 leap into action.
It turns out 'Silas' would have no trouble finding sharp knives as two come flying through the air towards him (Attack: 18 Damage: 5 : Attack: 12 Damage: 5). A third person grabs a nearby bottle and attempts to smash the bear over the head (Attack: 18 Damage: 1), while two goliaths and a half elf rush in to try to bowl the bear over and pin him with their enhanced strength. (5, 9, 20)
Turning from the door with a smile, and tripping up on his hoarse cough, Silas is immediately assailed "Arrrrggghhhhhhhhhh ******* hell!" Silas roars as each and every attack hits and he is bowled over, too distracted by the wounds to prepare for the grapples, as he is pinned he begins laughing, although the laugh (a deep belly laugh) is interrupted every few seconds by coughing and spitting up blood, from an oddly unbloodied mouth "y-you, haha, you jumpy bastards, hah, what kinda bear brings you your dinner" those of the assailants that are actively pinning Silas would feel no fur on his body and would be instead noticeably feeling his cloak covered Goliath frame, as well as not seeing any blood coming from the daggers sticking out of the 'bear's' body.
Everyone pauses in confusion and the half elf wrapped around Vilus's waist pats him a few times, feeling the cloak and noticing his hands passing through what should be solid fur. He backs off, shortly followed by the two goliaths, and the others lower their weapons. "Sorry... your voice... you helped free us, no? Sorry... we were startled by your...magic?"
The two goliaths, one a man with extensive arm tattoos cut short by his disfiguration and the other a woman with thick black tattoos around her eyes running up into her shaggy hairline, reach down and help 'Silas' back up. "That's... for us?" the woman says, licking her lips at the thought of fresh meat as opposed to the dried and cured fare at their disposal.
"yeah, it's erm.. 'Silas' Goliath... I thought that however much food is stored here has to be finite, right? so I may as well help out by getting something fresh to save on the dried stuff... dunno how long it'll take everyone to recover and all that, and as for the magic I... Well I don't control this, not yet, sorry for startling you all. I think I need a sit down now though." He pauses and pulls up a chair, coughing up blood once more, when Silas has collected himself a little and extracted the daggers from his torso, he nods a head toward the deer "Does anyone know how to properly butcher one of those"
One of the ones who had thrown a knife wordlessly brings the dear into the back and begins slicing away. A practiced ease to his movements indicates he may have been a butcher at some point, and the familiar motions seem to alleviate some of his edge.
Ashley sleeps like a stone. Even the barrage behind the bar does nothing to wake her. Once she finishes her long rest, she takes stock of what is going on and lets the situation wash over her. This is not how she planned things would be when she crossed the shield pass. But then smiles to herself, now that everyone is safe, the situation makes her excited. They saved many people, survived and now have a mystery to solve! What if there are more trapped in other basement laboratories? the thought sickens her.
Seeing that water and food has been addressed, even if by a bear that is apparently the goliath that stormed out earlier.. this is starting to not even phase her, she asks, "I'd like to go down and just see if that cave in is accessible or if it is unpassable, any one want to join me? I'd feel better knowing either way, and if there are more that we can get to and help, the sooner the better."
Malachi is in the corner of the room, thinking over what he has learned from the former captives and using the newly acquired writing implements to copy down a version of what he remembers from the notes in writing he can understand. The question remained in his mind, why should he care about any of this?
He looks up as loud shouts within the kitchen pull him from his thoughts. He rushes in to see what caused the commotion and pulls up at the sight of the others attacking a bear. A bear, in the kitchen? He breathes a sigh of relief as he and the others soon realize it is Silas.
“You truly cannot control when it will take hold or what form it will take? Can you tell when it will happen? When did you first gain this power?” He helps Silas up as he peppers him with questions. The goliath had his strengths, but he could quickly prove to be a liability to his traveling companions, especially if he truly was being hunted.
As Ashley stirs and asks about exploring downstairs again, he voices his questions and concerns. "What can be gained by staying here, especially if the innkeeper's partner is set to return? The former captives are freed. We can continue on to Talmouth, perhaps even drop a word of warning to the council. Might even be a reward in the information."
As he is peppered with questions, Silas responds to each in kind, but not aloud.. he projects his thoughts over to Malachi "I can control it better now than I could before, but it will take more time, it feels like a prickling when it happens, I got it during a ritual which hasn't worked properly for over 100 years, and it's connected somehow to whatever is going on here" his bear face wears a look of concentration as he thinks into Malachi's mind. Silas gets up, seeing to it that the food prep is in good hands he follows Malachi out of the kitchen, we at least need to heal up and refresh, the freed ones here will do as they please but if they could clear the cave in, we could go to Talmouth to warn in the mean time.." if the group would have filled him in by now he would also show concern for the mines mentioned in the letter, "maybe we should go there first? It seems there'll be trouble there soon, and likely a better shot at some answers"
"If we leave, and these... things continue their experiments and plans," Samir sits up groggily, fumbling for his glasses as he peers towards the others. "Who is to say that the authorities in Talmouth would be able to intervene in time? If there are others down there, past the cave in that need help... I feel like I would like to try and do that." Adjusting the glasses onto his nose, he blinks for a moment before focusing on Silas, his tone deepening and strengthening. "But there can not be another incident like with the innkeeper." He raises a hand to forestall any retort or comment before continuing. "Maybe death was what he deserved, perhaps regardless of the course of our actions it is what would have come to him. But such is not for us to decide. We are not the lawful authority here, and to summarily sentence a man to death, regardless of his evil, is not something I can have part in. To kill to save oneself or one's friends is one thing, to kill an unconscious man who posed no immediate threat is another. If we continue on this path, to try and help whoever else might be in danger, can we agree on this?"
Being in an exhausted state when she learned all the information, most of it is hazy. Ashley just worries that there is more of them, and thinks the best route would be to just see if they can get through the cave in. Maybe not? But at least they'd know. And also know that whatever is over there can't come this way and pray on other travelers. She waits to see if anyone will come with her as she isn't going to do it herself. When Silas and Samir pipe up about heading to the cave in, she has hope they will come with her, but she waits silently. If the decision is to move on, she'll join. At the moment, she's still a bit frazzled to lead on anything. Honestly, she isn't sure what scares her more, what they just went through, or the nightmare that still haunts her.
"Wait, Silas, uh how did you know about my nightmare?"
Turning to Samir, Silas answers first, "Samir I mean this with the utmost respect and gratitude, especially after the kindness you showed last night... I ask you to take no part in any decision I make, and as such, your mark of dissatisfaction is notably unnecessary.. Although I do wonder if yourself and Marion would be having the same moral dilemmas and condemnation, if Joren's strike had killed the man instead? And if not are we judging people based on their actions or intentions here? My intention was to re direct everyone's attention away from bickering about the fate of him whilst we had more important things to do, and I stick by that decision, because despite the explosive tattoo, Which no one had any clue about, My actions and intentions likely spared further danger, and may have saved some of these people's lives. these people say some of them had been held for months or more, the daily torture isn't something I'd like to imagine nor could I do justice, I did what I could to show them they had nothing to be afraid of from us, a decisive and outright show of who's side we fell on." he directs a hand toward the kitchen and then generally upstairs, gesturing at the freed ones. "however, I do understand your stance, I respect your morals, they likely served you well in wherever you've travelled here from, but I will say to you as well as Marion, These ethics you keep will not serve you as you wish in Talmouth, there if you cannot learn to bend your moral outlook then Talmouth will break it... and I'm sorry for that, believe me, I don't revel in this fact"
With an intense stare which oddly seems misplaced on a bear's face, Silas leans back, satisfied at having delivered his reasoning and warning, but also not happy that it had to be done, his thoughts race on whether his convictions hold true or not, until he is snapped out of it by Ashley's question, "Oh, ummm.. don't worry it's not some creepy mind invasion thing I promise, I ermm.. I don't sleep much, or really at all since I acquired this magic stuff.. it's been difficult, but It also means I was awake all last night and you were crying out and thrashing in your sleep, a nightmare was the obvious conclusion, but no need to be embarrassed or anything, I... uhhh, I could try to help if it happens again? send words of comfort and encouragement to your mind if they begin again, of course it's up to you, and I can't read minds or see dreams or anything, don't worry..." Silas fumbles and trips with his words a little, offering help like a school boy a little embarrassed at his own words, but also being very careful as to not offend.
When Marion gets inside with the water, she mentions having seen a couple rats outside. It may have been nothing, but given what has happened, she isn’t sure she trusts that to be the case.
As Silas speaks about checking out the mines, he realizes that with the lockdown in place, they would either need to sneak in or or get pan entry permit from Talmouth somehow. Which is not to mention that due to circumstances that he himself is partially responsible for, entry even to Talmouth may prove difficult at the moment
As Joren and Marion look on at the bear, it stoops to grab the yoke in the middle. Hoisting it easily over the shoulder not bearing the dear, the creature begins to move forward, not toward the two onlookers, but toward the inn. It makes brief eye contact before looking back at its destination.
