Unfortunately, in his tired state, he misjudges the the interloper's path and they elude him. He looks at the party apologetically and shakes his head.
"Heading for the flood right away or investigate the ceramics shop first?" Joren looks to the group for direction, realizing how much he could use a rest.
"C'mon, let's get to the market and see what is going on with the flooding! Then maybe we can get back to figuring out what we need to do next about Razmus." Ashley runs in the direction of where Miter told them to go.
As they run through the streets, the adventurers realize they are not attracting the same looks they used to in Tensmith. What few people they do see in the street seem entirely preoccupied. (Everyone roll me a perception check in Discord and I'll describe what scenarios you encounter on the way)
Malachi takes one last look back at the ceramics shop before turning and following Ashley “Wait, I am coming. Razmus would be a better use of our time. What are we supposed to do about flooding anyway? Do they expect us to scoop it back in the river with a bucket?” As they move toward the market, he looks closely at any townspeople they pass, watching for any more strange reactions like the woman they passed earlier.
"I think..." Samir puffs along with the others, hugging his satchel close to his side with one arm, the case of his bowgun banging against his back with each step. "I think it is more about trying to help any people than trying to stop a flood itself..."
As they make their way through the streets and alleys, Malachi catches a strong smell of smoke while passing one house in particular. He doesn't hear any panic from inside, nor can he hear a fire, so he doesn't think much of it.
That is, at least until he realizes that just for a moment, while passing by the door, he couldn't hear his footsteps or his breathing either. Or any sound really.
Already further down the street, Joren hears someone calling for help. He looks down the alley beside him, and his half-dwarven eyes clearly pick out an elvish man who appears to be caught in a mass of spiderwebs.
Joren growls, feeling uncertain: "I am not knowing arcane magic as some of you are. But this is feeling like sabotage by magic-users. Someone running by earlier with Invisibility. This elf here covered in a Web." (If Malachi mentions the Silence he will point that out as an example too).
He tries to throw one end of his rope to the trapped elvish man to help pull him out of the Web.
"Sabotage by magic-users? Really? Do you see any more of the cultists around? Man.. if only we still had that medallion." She watches as Joren tosses the rope, if it doesn't work to help, she'll pull out her dagger and run down to try and help him out.
With Ashley's knife and Joren's rope, the duo makes quick work of freeing the man from the webbing. little strands of silk trail off of him still as he backs away. "I'm sorry," he says, still on the verge of panic. "I don't know what's happening. Everything is chaos right now, and my dog ran off, and I tried to catch him, and... and..." He looks down at his hands and then at the veritable spider's nest all around him.
He stammers, still looking down at his hands, "I... I don't know. I've never had magic, I swear... But the webs came from me for some reason." His head snaps up. "Oh right, I need to find my dog! Chien?! Chien?!" The man struggles to his feet and staggers a few steps away, searching for his pet.
Malachi hesitates at the house where he smells smoke, then calls down the alley to Joren and Ashley. “Hey, back here! There is something odd in this house, almost like it swallows all sound. And I smell smoke.” His companions warned, Malachi approaches the house and tries to peer in a window or door opening to see if there is anyone inside or any sign of fire.
"From you?" Ashley sort of asks him as he gets up and runs after his lost dog. She stands up, and brushes her hands on her thighs, looking at Joren with a question clear on her face.
Just as she is about to ask, Mal calls them from by the house, without saying anything, she turns and runs back, seeing what she can do to help.
Samir stares after the man as he runs off, puzzling over what he'd heard. A spontaneous emergence of magical ability? The Lady wouldn't just randomly inflict that upon people, would she? He blinks, still staring after where the man had been before Malachi's voice catches his attention. He begins jogging back in that direction with Ashley, but his mind is elsewhere indeed.
Perhaps not the Lady... but someone who wanted to cause as much chaos as possible?
"Is this entire town turning into a gaggle of accidental sorcerers, then?" Joren looks back at Ashley, having no clear answers.
"Meaning no offense to you purposeful sorcerers, of course, Ash and Mal!" Joren rushes over to help with the house that Malachi indicated, looking through a window, summoning his echo as he does, ready to echo-swap inside if needed.
Drawing closer, Malachi looks through a window to the right of the door. He sees smoke collecting near the ceiling, and upon adjusting his angle, realizes that a standing candelabra has been knocked over, causing the entry rug to be consumed by flame. Even as he looks, the fire continues to spread out along the wooden floorboards. A halfling stands past the rug, hands cupped to his mouth as he calls for help, but neither he nor the flames make a sound.
“Bollocks, someone is inside” Malachi curses. Not sure if the others hear him or not, he motions for the others to help him and he connects with Joren’s mind telepathically. Malachi pushes against the door, hoping to help someone break it down.
Joren:
Joren hears Malachi's voice echo in his head “Break down the door, there is a fire just inside and someone is trapped”
Joren charges into the door, trying to smash it down. He almost misjudges it, but manages to hit the sweet spot as Malachi points to it.
Athletics at advantage due to help from Malachi: 20
"Are one of you having a way to snuff out a small part of that fire so I can be running back with the halfling?"
If the door is down, Joren moves his echo (already summoned) ahead next to the halfling if in range and swaps with it as a bonus action. Ready to throw the halfling over his shoulder and charge back out through the fire, especially if one of his companions can open a path for him.
Ashley wedges her way into the door way to assess the situation and see what Joren is yelling about. Seeing that he is now over by the halfling, she casts control flames to extinguish a 5' path between where they stand and the doorway. "That help?" she yells to Joren.
