Staring into the elongated room, Elandra sighs, "Well, we have several directions to explore now, and I'm not a fan of us travelling off too far apart from each other in this place. Personally I'd prefer we head up. See if we can find where those chimneys come in, and also it gets us out of the catacombs, which generally feel like where we are gona find anything really dangerous. So making sure everywhere else is clear seems sensible."
Listening to Elandra, Jade heads over to the table with the potion brewing equipment on it, seeing if there was anything worth keeping. “Agreed. Sticking together is probably the best course of action and I’m good with heading upstairs once we’ve checked this place out.”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As the door opens Koric stares at the door, fearful of explosions, traps, pits or just hordes of undead pouring from the room. Eventually he breathes out slowly, unaware that he had been holding his breath. He takes a few tentative steps, slowly following the others into the room and starts to examine the equipment.
Looking at the tables, there's not too much that is instantly noticeable. Make an Investiagtion check if you want to keep searching
@Lux and Soloth
Removing the coverings from the tables, you can now see that they are covered in little fragments of stone, each of which seem to have some sort of runic markings on them. Both of you, make either an Arcana or an Investigation check
Jade and Koric, looking at this table, you see nothing but random flasks and beakers, nothign really standing out from the mounds of discarded glass
Lux, you attempt to decipher the runes, but have absolutely no clue what you are looking at. Clearly these are foreign to you, although you do not they look markedly different than the dwarven runs on the base of the statue you fought alongside
@Soloth
Looking at the broken shards of stone, while you can't read the runes, you start to map out in your head what it would look like fully intact. Peicing a few things together, you can tell that if you were to fully reassemble it, it would be some sort of circular structure, likely large enough to fit a person through.
Frustrated with the random mess, Jade looks over and sees Soloth putting together a few pieces and heads over to see what he is up to. "What do you have here? Oh and there are runes with it. Interesting."
Koric looks up from the table, disappointed. It seemed to him that, at least for a moment, he was back in familiar territory -- something for which he had trained. "Just one big mess," he says gloomily.
He turns his attention to the runes trying to make sense of them ((passive investigation 23)). If they are unknown to him, then he pulls out his spell book, "This may take a few minutes, but it might help us understand this place a little better."
Assuming nobody asks him to wait, he begins the ritual to cast Comprehend Languages.
Between looking at the runes and attempting to understand the language through magic, you've made some progress, but there's still parts of this that stump you. The words of the runes themselves are in Infernal, and translate roughly to "Two portals, intertwined" repeated over and over again. The magic used to make these is clearly of a warlock and not familiar to you, although you can make out something that looks like the sigil of the death god Myrkul, who's cultists one resided here in Axeholm, and the runes looks faintly familiar to teleportation magic you've seen yourself
@Jade
These runes make absolutely 0 sense to you and you have truly no clue what you are looking at
Elandra wanders over after Soloth's comments. "I wander whether it was a way out, or a way in? If the defences of Axeholm were as strong as they appear, maybe the breach came from inside the walls? It would certainly be interesting to understand what the purpose of the device was. I'm not sure if I recall anything such as this in any of the tales I tell but I'll ponder whilst I keep watch."
@DM - Elandra will try to recall any lore she might have come across in tales of such devices that might be useful and not already discussed. She'll also keep watch in the corridors for any movement or signs of other beings. Perception: 22 History / Arcana: 13
Koric tells the others what he has learned then adds, "Some kind of summoning for creatures from another plane, perhaps? The involvement of the death god is odd."
These runes make absolutely 0 sense to you and you have truly no clue what you are looking at
(Lol!)
Jade looks around at the confusing mass of stuff and stands back, letting others dive into it, hoping they make sense of something. "I'll just uh, keep watch"
She stands sentry, keeping an eye on all exits while the party continues their work.
Liri watches as the others attempt to decipher the portal, but she knows that such arcane devices are beyond her. Seemingly, it is a mystery to the others also though.
"Should we perhaps have a look further in? There might be more that the inhabitants left behind - perhaps something to help understand this more?"
