Meriele looks carefully at the door. It seems so innocuous, but she trusts that the wiser members of the party have good reason to be careful. "What if we knock?" she wonders aloud. But maybe Weeds can't actually hear.
Dranon turns to Soren. “I’m not sure what enchantment you had in mind, but perhaps a coin will fit under the door”, as he holds up a copper piece for his fellow Artificer. If it doesn’t work, maybe we just open the door carefully…or we simply knock.” He looks over to Meriele with genuine grin.
The party waits for a tense few seconds... but no answer comes. The door remains silent and still, though some of the dust is wiped off where Soren's fist connected.

Soren has no issue with the lock, as it evidently wasn't protecting anything incredibly important. The door opens into another room full of shelves, though this place seems more like a stock room than anything. Large boxes of books lie here and there, and were probably neatly organized before the cardboard rotted away and spilled their contents all over. There is another door set in the east wall of this room, and it seems like the stock room doesn't take up the entirety of the corner of the building, leaving some space for another small room behind the door.

After everyone’s entered the room, while keeping eyes up, Dranon kneels down to more closely and carefully inspect the spilled books closest to him. Are they in any better shape than the others we’ve found?
"Anyone detecting anything magical in here?" Xilbella asks, glancing to the Artificers int he group. She scans the shelves and boxes, looking for anything of more interest than other things.
Xilbella's passive perception is 18, her passive investigation is 17.
Dranon had already found his thieves tools in the familiar front pouch on his belt, when Xilbella asked about Detect Magic. After a moment of concentration the spell is cast. Dranon slowly stands, looking about the room 360 degrees, trying, first, to identify anything remotely magical from his current vantage point.
The books don't look any better than the others, as time has been as unkind to this room as it has to all the others. As Xilbella searches through the room, she initially finds nothing of note, until she realizes that the sound her shoes make in one corner of the room are markedly different than anywhere else. Clearing away the papers and the dust reveals a small trapdoor in the corner. Dranon's magical gaze again finds nothing but negligible ambient magic, until he gazes upon the trapdoor, which glows with the color of an uncut diamond. It's clearly got a middling aura of abjuration magic.

Xilbella moves to the trap door and checks it for traps. Finding none she pulls out her thieve's tools and tries to unlock it, if it is locked. She also fails that. Rolled 2 nat ones in the game log. So modified 8 for the investigation and another modified 8 for the thieve's tools.
Albeit not necessarily his forte, Dranon kneels down to the trap door with thieves tools in hand. Then, looking up at Xilbella and confirms, “No traps, right?” With that, he gives the lock a go.
Xilbella leans down to the trapdoor, attempting to inspect it, but a headache is distracting it. As she tries to open it, another jolt of pain goes through her head, and her vision blurs for a moment as ghostly whispers echo in her ears. She identifies this as a symptom of her strange gift. Someone died here. Useful information, but also rather distracting when one is trying to focus on careful actions.
Dranon's attempts to pick the lock appear to go flawlessly. That is, until he turns the lock, and it keeps turning, and turning, corkscrewing in on itself until his pick is chewed to pieces by the constricting metal. The charm on this thing seems to protect against such methods of entry.

“Damn. Well that didn’t go as planned.” Returning the mangled pick to his pouch for mending later, Dranon utilizes his remaining tools to cast Identify on the trap door to discern the enchantment’s properties.
Dranon determines that the enchantment is only present on the lock, and protects it from opening via anything other than the key used when setting the enchantment. The protection does not extend to the actual trapdoor itself.

Soren, with a rueful grin himself, nods agreement. "To hells with it!" He bangs four times - loudly - on the door, then steps back.
Dranon takes a step back, lowering his great crossbow at the door before them. “That’ll work,” he grins with a bit of jovial surprise.

Soren checks the door for locks or traps, before trying to open it. If none, he just opens it then moves back.
Investigation = 8
Thieves' Tools = 12
