Thomas looks conflicted for a moment.

"Yes... yes you are right we are nearly at the camp and we can not hope to catch the beast... and even if we did, we are not prepared for such a confrontation."

 "Music to my ears."

The party carry on, but with a watchful eye to the sky. 

Arrival

The logging camp spreads along the south shore of the river, where a dozen tents are arranged on a sandy beach. Near a dock stands a cabin with logs stacked under an awning. Older cabins close by have been torn down to leave only stone chimneys and foundations. A grim silence hangs over the camp, and they see no one around.

The party head in from the east.

The party approach a small cluster of tents on the southern edge of the camp. As they grow closer there is a loud rumbling sound and then up ahead the ground bursts apart and a large creature emerges.

The creature resembles an enormous many-legged insect, its long antennae twitching in response to any movement around it. Its legs end in sharp hooks adapted for burrowing and grasping its prey, and its powerful mandibles can snap a small tree in half. It attacks immediately.

Round 1 : 12 vs 7

 Thomas casts bless on Elandra, Anders and Feldoran.

He then backs off a way and takes a defensive stance.

 Elandra draws her blades and charges in.

 Anders levels his crossbow.

"Do some sneaky shit Feldoran before it eats us." (Badric Inspiration)

 Feldoran draws his rapier and dagger then charges in.

Rapier Attack: 19 Damage: 10

Dagger Attack: 5 Damage: 5

Sneak Attack 9

 Already badly wounded Toot blows the creature apart with magic missile.

 "Well done! Now let us tread carefully."

The party enter the ring of tents ready to explore.

Despite their best efforts they disturb the ground and two more of the creatures emerge in a shower of soil and stones.

Round 1 : 20 vs 4

 Thomas ducks down behind a tent and recasts Bless

Elandra charges toward the creature to the west.

 "Turn them to bug meat Elandra." (Bardic Inspiration)

He casts sleep on the wounded creature for 20 HP

It drops to the ground unconscious.

Anders then ducks into one of the nearby tents.

 Toot casts flaming sphere and slams it into the beast for 10 damage

She runs and takes cover behind one of the tents.

 Feldoran hides in one of the tents.

Bardic Inspiration 6

Shortbow Attack: 19 Damage: 8

The ankheg spits acid at Elandra for 6 damage

It then charges forward toward her to escape the heat of the flaming sphere.

 Thomas fires his pistol.

Pistol Attack: 17 Damage: 3 and ducks back behind the tent.
