You have all entered the Jumble, a large district of tangled roads and single-story buildings in the town of Jigow. Throngs of people, most of them orcs and goblins, move through the streets, laughing, singing, running, and sightseeing. All are enthralled by the raucous sights and sounds of the town’s Festival of Merit.
You hear snippets of conversations as people pass by: a goblin mother telling her children not to go near the baby horizonback tortoises, a drow guard in shining insectile armor complaining to his partner that his gauntlet was crushed by a hulking orc in the arm-wrestling contest, and a pair of young orcs in swimwear hollering as they rush toward the banks of the Ifolon River, saying something about a race.
All around you, colorful signs and banners point toward festival booths surrounded by cheering people. On this street alone, you can see a meat-pie eating contest near a shop mounted on the back of a massive tortoise, and on the other side of the road, a banner emblazoned with the words “Riddles and Rhymes: Unbeatable Riddles!” That banner points toward a three-story temple in the center of the Jumble. The town is yours to explore—where do you want to go?
Nexus had spent a small portion of the morning fretting over numerous things. Her hair, her outfit for the day, why on Exandria a certain friend of hers had opted to invite some -other- wizard to their party instead of her. A decision she ultimately decided was of no consequence; this merely meant that she was afforded another opportunity to best them.
But first came assembling a crew to do just such a task. Outgoing as she might be sometimes, that was most often just her putting on a face, straining herself till she needed to retreat to her own personal solitude from peers her own age. So with the majority of the people she would have tried to team up with taken already, that left her with few choices other than to hit up the Jumble. Precisely where she had asked her minotaur friend to meet her, and who she was currently looking for, one hand rubbing the others forearm.
Her outfit for the day was simple--a sundress with a soft pink hue that stood out against her darker skin, and the white hair that fell around her shoulders in loose curls. Tied up slightly at the waist to reveal one leg, while the other fell loosely. What leg was revealed quickly hidden behind some swim trunks, simple black in color. Perhaps she aimed to take a swim later, or participate in that race some orcs spoke of in passing.
Kalhala walks the streets of the Jumble, greeting his old Watch members that he sees as he saunters through. He hopes he is here at the right time to meet with Nexus, he never is sure about those things. He wonders what she wants to meet about, she never said. Maybe just to take in the sights? But he didn't think so as the Jumble isn't exactly a place he would think Nexus would want to just wander. Ah! He'll find out soon enough, there she is!
"Nexus! Over here!" once they catch up to each other, "So, what's on the agenda for the day, a little swim perhaps? Shoot, should have told me, I am not dressed for that." Kalhala, as usual, had his armor on over his deep red tunic. He had a hard time not putting it on after the many years of wearing it with the Watch. The minotaur had his long hair pulled up in a man bun and had many piercings adorning his ears and nose.
Nexus, on the lookout for her friend, looked relieved when he suddenly called out her name. She wasn't sure if he'd get the time off, after all--All these people coming into town for the festival likely meant that crime was at an uptick for a day or two. Moving toward him, sheepishly responding on the matter of clothing for today. "Oh, sorry about that---I had thought I made mention of what we would be doing today. But don't worry, you don't need to take part of the swimming race if you're not comfortable doing so in your armor. Can understand not wanting it to get rusty."
A pause, glancing to the side while a hand brushed back some of her hair behind an ear. "As for the agenda--We're gonna be gathering a little group to take part in all the challenges in town. Ayo will be doing them, and you know that little rivalry we got going on. But I'm not exactly suited for all of them, and don't want you getting tired out doing all the physical stuff on your own. Plus I'm not exactly comfortable collecting a group of strangers on my own. Familiar faces help me keep comfortable."
Whispering that last part, just baaarely audible. Although with the ruckus of happy children and travelers, that probably wasn't necessary.
Morninglight has been watching the activity from afar, peering from under his hood. He sees the people enjoying the festivities. He knows if he joined in, he'd have fun as well. He stands there, two halves of his mind arguing. If I partake in the festival, my secret would be ruined , he thought. But if I don't, he reasoned, surely that would make me stand out more right? If everyone's enjoying the festival, then following them would make me blend in more. Satisfied with his reasoning, he decides he needs a group so that he doesn't single himself out playing games by himself.
He reaches a hand into his hood and pokes something. A moment later, the tiny crimson head of a pseudodragon pokes out, squinting at the light. Apparently, this little creature had been curled around Morninglight's neck, sleeping under the shade provided by his cloak's hood and his bushy white beard.
"Eve? Could you go find that tall guy with the big horns? He seemed nice, didn't he? Maybe he'd let us follow him around today. What do you say? Can you fly around and tell me if you see him?"
You can't drown someone with Create Water. If your lungs are containers than your bones are objects. Any Siege monster that attacks you deals double damage because it’s attacking your bones.
The crimson pseudodragon lets out a yawn as she emerges from Mornin's hood. After clicking her tongue a few times, Eve narrows her eyes at her owner, telepathically projecting a feeling of frustration at being woken up so early. Nevertheless, she takes to the skies after a few snapping growls. She returns a few moments later and projects an image of a minotaur in mail and a red tunic standing on a corner of a thoroughfare in the Jumble near the Temple of the Luxon. Using the dragon as his guide, Morninglight soon arrives at the location and spots Kalhala the minotaur, along with a bespectacled drow woman in a pink sundress.
Exiting the temple of the Luxon Kenar looked out at the throngs of people rushing around the festival with no small amount of anxiety. Having arrived only hours before he had just enough time to ask for a temporary room at the temple and deposit his traveling gear and armor before the festival began its clamoring in full swing. Thinking to himself “Give me dark scary dungeons any day but this is really scary” of all things for a cleric to have social anxiety is probably not the best, but he shrugs off his nervousness, griping tight to his tiny replica of the Luxon. Closing his eye as he prepares to walk out into he crowd he whispers a quick prayer for guidance. Then promptly falls down the rest of the stairs ass over tea kettle by not looking where he was going.
Shayone stares at the entrance to the temple of the Luxon, debating with herself whether she should enter. Her prayers have gone unanswered so far, but to not continue might signal a surrender that she did not want to bow to. But still, a new town, with a busy schedule, surely it wouldn't be so bad if she didn't --
Her thoughts are interrupted by the loud (and somewhat familiar) clatter of armor on stone as a figure tumbles down the stairs, landing almost at her feet. I don't think that counts as a sign, but I'll take it, she says to herself, as she recognizes the figure as Kenar, one of the folks she's been travelling with since leaving Rosohna. "We already agreed to meet up here, Kenar, no need to make a display." She offers him a hand up.
Aldith couldn't help but stare at the throngs of people frolicking about, enjoying the festival. She'd never seen anything like it before. There was nothing like it in the Shadowshire, where most people were merely trying to survive. There had never been enough time, or safety, to let one's guard down and actually celebrate something. The drow woman felt like pinching herself to make sure she wasn't actually dreaming. At the same time, she was confused. Why had her patron bade her come to this place? It had to be about more than taking part in festival games. She didn't know much about her otherworldly patron, but he didn't seem like the jesting type. There had to be a deeper meaning to the situation that she just hadn't discovered yet.
As she pondered these thoughts, she almost walked right into the back of Shayone, who had stopped suddenly in front of the Temple of Luxon. Shayone and Kenar were acquaintances she'd met in Rosohna, when she had gone looking for a caravan leaving for Jigow. She did not know them very well yet and so did not trust them, but they had made friendly enough traveling partners. Now, Aldith watched with combined amusement and horror as Kenar fell down the temple steps, making a huge ruckus in his armor.
"Well, he certainly knows how to make an entrance," says Aldith drily.
As Kalhala and Nexus chat, they spot Kenar tumble down the steps of the Luxon's temple, followed by Shayone, who helps him up. Aldith stands nearby, watching the aftermath of Kenar's tumble.
Morninglight strides toward Kalhala deftly, oddly quiet for such an imposing figure. He stands behind the minotaur and utters in a deep, rumbling voice, "Kalhala." Whether or not he scares Kalhala or Nexus is up to them. If so, he will have an apologetic look on his face briefly before returning to a stoic face. "Was wanting to enjoy the festival. If you are too, can I join you?" His speech is slow, as though common is not his first language.
You can't drown someone with Create Water. If your lungs are containers than your bones are objects. Any Siege monster that attacks you deals double damage because it’s attacking your bones.
Nexus, in the midst of her conversation with Kalhala, hears the sound of someone falling down a set of stairs, which pulls her attention away from her friend briefly, only to have her attention stolen once more by Morninglight's sudden appearance. Them stating Kalhala's name helped put her somewhat at ease at least. If Nexus minded his slow speech, she didn't show it. Rather, glancing up at Kalhala, then back toward the ruckus she heard near the temple. "Ah--yes, yes we were going to enjoy the festival. I don't mind more company, if Kalhala doesn't mind."
Kalhala chuckles as Nexus mentions Ayo, the way that one brought out the competition streak in Nexus was entertaining. Ayo sure liked to give Kalhala a hard time as well, but not so much now that he was no longer with the Watch. Now that one amused him more than anything. "Of course I'll join you, and help you find others. This will be fun!" he flexes his muscles for Nexus to show his enthusiasm at the idea.
As the commotion happened behind Kalhala, he turns and follows Nexus's gaze to the group at the temple. He smiles and lifts his fist, pointing his thumb at the group, "What about them?" then seeing Nexus isn't looking anymore and hearing his name, he turns back, "Why Mornin! Of course you can join us, we were about to ask you!"
Mornin smiles, though it's hard to tell through his thick facial hair.

Kenar looks up from the ground at the two ladies he’d traveled to Jigow he sits for a second the lets out a delayed “Ow……..sorry delayed reaction” thoroughly embarrassed and blushing he accepts Shayone’s hand up. “Honestly forgot. Lost my head in the crowd but you know what they say ‘have a good trip see you next fall’ I just didn’t realize how literal the phrase was.” sheepishly smiling at them with his sorry attempt a humor he asks “so the festival is in full swing“ gesturing at the crowd with a bit of nervous apprehension “What ahh well ummm care if I tag along…promise not to fall anymore….well…I mean I’ll try”
"We'll keep you upright," Shayone says easily. "I'd love to see what the festival is all about. An old friend of mine is supposed to be around here somewhere, but, ah, it's been a while since I've seen them, and I'm not sure which parts of the festival they'd even be the most interested in, so I'm not too sure where to start." She looks at Aldith for suggestions.
With their third member of their little group now with them, Nexus snickered in light amusement to see Kalhala flexing, then turned her gaze back toward the temple and group with the one that had taken the fall. A single, deep breath to calm her own nerves, then she just started walking over to the group.
"Pardon the intrusion--Is your friend quite alright? They've not already partook of too many spirits have they?"
It's not unheard of for folks to get plastered with the festival as an excuse. It was just typically seen more around night-time. But hey, her tone at least wasn't meant to sound like she was judging. She was genuinely concerned and hopeful they were alright.
Kenar turning scarlet once more or as scarlet as his pallid skin will allow nod his head at the lady “I’m unharmed thanks no spirits were involved merely a lax in situational awareness” he states trying to sound more intellectual and he caves almost immediately “I didn’t look as I stepped down.” Then remembering his manner he gesture’s to his companions. “But where are my manners this is Shayone and Aldith my traveling companions down from Rosohna and I’m Kenar pleasure to meet you.” Finishing the greeting he look at his to companions for help as he starts nervous sweating.
Kalhala follows Nexus to the steps of the temple and as Kenar introduces his friends, Kalhala returns the favor, "Good day, at least I hope yours gets better,"he says with a wink, "The name is Kalhala, and this is Nexus and Mornin. Do the three of you have plans for the festival? Would you like to join us while we partake? It'll be fun.."and he gives them a genuine smile..though they can see the big sharp teeth behind it.
Aldith was about to answer Shayone's question when a group of new people approaches them. She looks at them in surprise. One of them is another drow, and the sight of one of her kin in this strange place makes Aldith feel a little better, a little less awkward. At the sight of the minotaur, she has to prevent herself from staring too much; she really hasn't had much experience with his kind. This one looks friendly enough though, she reminds herself. This is a festival. No one is out to attack you here.
"Greetings," she says cautiously. "We hadn't yet decided on our plans. As for myself, I'd like to take part in the game of riddles. I've heard there is also a maze. If my companions agree, I wouldn't mind joining you. There is strength in numbers after all."
