“ thanks a bunch, the boy will appreciate this. We remember favors paid and good deeds done, safe travels “ the guard says to you.
You head across the bridge and wave to Eberk Earthlord one last time. He splits off and heads towards the Mirabar district on the other side of the river, presumably towards Whitesails harbor.
you head back to the inn to collect any belongings, your cart, etc…and to leave your response with the bar keep
Bjorn blinks, feeling somewhat spun around by all this. He brings up the rear of the group, and murmurs to Reginald, "They've really grown suspicious of Irongrass, all of a sudden. Last time we were here, it was all good friend Irongrass, we sure do like you, and your delicious pastries that Bjorn can't enjoy, but now? It's like he slapped their mothers."
To Eberk: "Yer goin' back out on the sea?" Bjorn's eyebrows attempt to escape his face. "After what happened before? Best get on with it, then, before anybody can decide whether yer honorable or just stupid." He smiles and this time it seems to lack any subterfuge. "Don't die, eh?"
Sparhawk gives Reginald a healers kit and a healing potion. “Your our new healer if one of us goes down. I believe you’ve met the crew my friend?” And, what I said in that wizard tower is true. I will fight to the death to defend you, but if you betray us, ….
ok, we have a number of options Friends, where ya wanna go. We need to give Fist an answer.
"Fist can wait a bit. I mostly want to avoid running into Abernath on that job. Since Irongrass wasn't home, mister Stahle here will have to give us his opinion." Bjorn explains the Fist situation, and asks how likely Reginald expects it would be that we'd encounter Abernath if we pursued Fist's offer. Recap below:
A pirate called Bernard stole from Fist's employer, under orders from someone called Grin'dal. We tracked down Bernard and most of the loot, but Bernard's right hand man got away with a key piece. It's a magical artifact, and Fist wants to hire us to take it from Grin'dal.
We also happen to know Bernard's men were staking out the empty Abernath manor, and Abernath also had some magical artifact, but his was obtained from Thay. Bjorn's opinion is that the Thay wizards caught on, and that Abernath went to ground to avoid them. But our info is pretty limited, so that's speculation. Maybe it's the same artifact. It seems like being around it caused Abernath or his servants to go on a killing spree, and when Bernard's guy touched their artifact, something happened to him, but we didn't see it. The only person who saw it, got called away by their Warlock patron before she could tell us about it. Also, the only living witness at the Abernath manor was unable to speak when we found him, and then probably died when the place got levelled by destructive magic.
"Open to your suggestions, but I"m leaning toward continuing with Fists offer, although I feel like we may run into Abernath evidence on the road. Mirabar will be promising for better equipment, and we can revisit the cave we found." He looks at the others, "Thoughts?"
"I vote for continuing with Fist," Vars says. "I have a feeling we will gather more information about Abernath if we do, since these seem...strangely connected." He pauses, "However, I do think we should give our friend from the road a visit before we head out. Just in case it turns out to be a simple job that we can accomplish on the side. We don't know how long it will be before we come back here, or if he'll even still want someone to do it for him by that time. I don't think it would hurt to just see what he wants."
"I think that may be a good idea Vars." Sparhawk looks at the others, "Frangipani, Bjorn?" He then looks at his new friend, "Reginald, I've shared with you some of our opportunities Do you have any opinion about what you're interested in, or are you set on pursuing Abernath?" (Are you tied to your master, or do you have more freedom in your choices)
"I swear by the Code of the Sea that I will be loyal to the crew I sign with until the voyage is over. By this oath I declare I have no other binding oaths upon me. Will you swear on behalf of your crew loyalty to me in return?" Reginald then spits in his right hand and offers it to Sir Sparhawk.
Sparhawk smiles at Reginald, "Indeed, I, Sir Sparhawk swear to be a loyal and trustworthy friend, companion, and captain to you during your travels with me. Should any harm befall you, I will do everything in my power to assist you. I will be fair in all of my dealings with you. You will receive an equal portion of all that our group is paid by our jobs. You may leave our crew at any time once a job is completed if you so choose." Sparhawk looks at him seriously. "Should you betray us or break your vow, know that my heart will be the agent of justice and my sword the instrument of vengeance."
Sparhawk also spits in his somewhat greenish large hand and grasps Reginald tightly, then less formally gives him a huge bear hug (as he tends to do). "You are now a part of our crew, my friend." (I suppose this means Frangipani can't eat him yet.) "Come, lets have a drink and decide on our next course of action."
"Excellent, as for what my old Master wanted, I will eventually get it done and I won't betray my crew, I swear upon Valkur Name. Lets's have that drink" Reginald says with a smile.
Sparhawk, feeling the need for a drink and that they will likely pursue the opportunity with Fist, encourages the crew to finish any shopping they need and to meet at the bar for a good drink to seal the deal.
After buying one of everything on the menu (we'll only be here a short time, so make it count!), Bjorn is more pliable to the idea of working for Fist again.
Frangipani shrugged at the idea of choosing which mission to undertake first, she really didn't care either way....though part of her wanted to check out that weird underwater rift again at some point.
She watched the ritual welcome with a bemused expression having already filed the newcomer as non-edible.....hair or regenerating body parts not withstanding....
She munched her way through bar snacks and water as she waited for stragglers.
Sparhawk takes a big sip of his ale, "Ok my friends, it is decided. We are going to accept Fists offer. Its too good to pass up, and it leads us toward two other sources of income." He looks at the group. "We visit our friend from the road and see what he has to offer." We then return here, give Fist the go ahead and start on our way."
He writes a note to the head bar keep for Fist, and includes a small coin pouch
Mr. Fist, I have spoken to a gem expert in town and the bag I showed you was assessed at 200gp. Per my agreement with you, here is 20gp as promised. Also, we accept the mission and will leave at first light. We have a few changes to the crew, but don't worry, we'll do our best to get the job done.
Sir Sparhawk, Knight of the Pandion Order
He gives the barkeep 20 silver pieces and asks that this letter and pouch be delivered to Fist.
"Bjorn, "I've been thinking, if Grindal and group were expecting Bernard and company at their hide out, what are the chances we could rig up some sort of disguises and show up as them? I'm a bit dubious about it as that poison arrow shooting boss has likely told them, and I'm also confident we will see him again." He looks at Bjorn, I'll let you think about if you have a better idea than mine, I believe your good at this sort of thing."
"Frangipani and Vars, I think that cave may need some further exploring. Lets make sure we are ready for anything there."
"Regi, hope your prepared on your spells. We'll likely need you for ranged attacks and support. Not sure what you have at your disposal?"
Vars rolls his eyes as Sparhawk welcomes Reginald into their group. He's past assuming the kid is a spy, but he a little irritated that he's going to be getting an equal share of whatever they earn... that meant he would get part of the treasure from Vars's map. "There better be plenty there..." he thinks to himself. "I still have to pay that old man back."
When they return to the tavern, he orders something strong (but not to strong as he expects to be on the road pretty soon). Then, seeing Sparhawk writing a lengthy letter he says, "I'm pretty sure Fist said to just write a simple Yay or Nay, not an entire book."
Sparhawk, sensing Vars being a bit bitter, buys him a second ale. "Yes, yes, Ya know Vars, having a wizard with us may have helped us against that black pudding. I'm sure it has occurred to you that having him with us will help us to achieve some of Your objectives."
In a more than usual militant tone, "Ok gang, finish up your grog. We are heading out." Sparhawk gets up, straightens up his belongings.
When out of the bar... "We are headed to the warehouses over by the Red Dragon Trading Post on the other side of town, Mirabar, were all the nice people live." He looks at Vars, "we'll be looking for our friend, Dietrich Thornston." He looks at Bjorn, "no funny business on this one, but keep thinking of that other plan I mentioned. If today's business is of interest to us, we got a day. If not, we'll head out. Frangipani and Reginald, keep sharp. Rich people are the ones I trust the least. The've got no code, and think they are above the law." Sparhawk spits on the ground, thinking of some past event.
OLD POST ON DIETRICH, traveler on the road as a reminder:
(“ my name is Dietrich. Dietrich Thorston. Before I go I should warn you. They still have not captured the murderer in Mirabar, they believe he has not fled and they still know nothing of the motives, so keep yer eyes open on your way. Safe travels friends. When you return to Luskan, look me up in the warehouses near the Red Dragon trading post, in the Mirabar district….you know, the good side of town.”
"Oh I know," Vars replies. "I guess I'm just a bit irritated that we seem to be losing members as fast as we are gaining them...and vice versa." He grumbles something unintelligible before adding, "I'm sure this magic user will be useful, but he's still gotta earn his place here. The rest of us had to, so he isn't an exception."
As always, he will take up the lead as they head to go speak to Dietrich.
"You can say that again," he remarks to Sparhawks statement about rich folk.
