"Thanks Frapi!" Sparhawk says, catching his breath. "It would have been very embarrassing to let my order know that one of their knights was killed by a carpet." Sparhawk lets out a huge laugh. "Careful my friends, this place is not as it seems. There are some traps about and the rooms have magical enchantments. Lets stay in at least groups of two."
Sparhawk continues to investigate the first floor, being more careful now for any signs of magic or traps. Search for any signs of a hidden basement.
(Perception: 23
Also want to use my (Survival Skill) to look for any unusual tracks, especially those that end abruptly where they should not (hidden door, half a track, etc.)
Vars was caught up in thought as he inspected the preserved foods in the pantry. He was a little disappointed to discover that all of the foods were preserved and not just the stuff on the table.
Suddenly realizing that Bjorn had run out of the kitchen, and there were loud noises coming from somewhere near the front door. Drawing one short sword, he hurries to see what all the fuss is about. He makes it over there in time to see Frangipani with her knife and Sparhawk struggling. Finding himself behind the action, he is unable to do much as everyone else takes care of the issue. Once the carpet is off of Sparhawk, Vars helps Bjorn get something to pin down the rug. Then he says to Sparhawk, “Are you alright?” He shakes his head, “I’m such a bloody idiot, sticking my head in that bloody cabinet while your out here suffocating.” He offers Sparhawk a hand to help him up. Clearly he’s feeling pretty bad, but he’s not really the kind of person to flat out apologize.
(OOC: I just got the last message, which makes some of what Vars did in my last post a bit late. If its alright, I’ll just say that happened right after Sparhawk was freed from the rug?)

Down the hallway you can see closed doors. Two on the right and three on the left, along will some paintings on the walls. The hallway ends at a wall. In the dust on the floor you can see some rodent tracks, but no discernible humanoid tracks.

"It's okay Vars, it all happened really sudden. We should be cautious when we investigate though, there will likely be more surpirses like this in a wizards home." Sorsha says. "And let's stick together for now I think." She says, trying to motion for the crew to gather in the kitchen before she opens the door to the north, peering in. Perception: 5
Sparhawk reaches down and grabs the copper piece. A lucky coin, undoubtedly from his goddess, looking out for him. He feels a certain sense of irony that he was being tested in this way by her, but... he probably deserved it. "Can anyone detect for magic, and more importantly, dispel a magical effect." Sparhawk has an impulsive and somewhat dumb idea.
"Any creatures or magical beings,.....hear me!" He says in a commanding tone. "We are friends of your master, Abernath, the infernal. We were sent by Kutoti Irongrass. We mean no harm to your master or this home!" Sparhawk pauses briefly, half hoping something will happen. "I am Sir Sparhawk, Knight of the Pandion order. I give you my word, we are friends, not foes." Sparhawk feels a bit foolish. Perhaps, he was somewhat shaken by the rug attack.

[Ah, the hand-drawn grid paper map, I love it. Classic D&D experience]
Rats! Nobody thinks to hide things from rats. Maybe they know something. Bjorn casts Speak with Animals and starts calling out: "Friends! There is a rat-catcher approaching soon, whose deadly tools will root you out from your clever hiding places. Come out so that we can help you avoid him!"
Sorsha opens then door into a thin room, approximately 5’ deep and 15’ in length. Some barrels of various bulk goods off to the right of the door. Some long tools and brooms hanging on the wall directly across from the door and a stairway leading down into a basement on the left side.

"Does anyone else hear high pitched sqeaks!" Some sort of rodents, I'm guessing?" Sparhawk carefully peers in the room with Sorsha, using darkvision if needed. (Perception: 12) "Oh, its coming from Bjorn." Sparhawk winks at his multitalented friend.
again, survival/ tracking) if it makes sense to look for something unusual with footprints. (5

"Yes, you've found me out. I'm the rat catcher, sent by the city to kill everything in this house now that Abernath is gone. I have powerful spells and sharp knives, and I'm going to kill you all painfully. I'll spare anyone who can give me useful information, but the longer you wait, the more painful your demise will be."

Bjorn looks around at the party and shrugs hopelessly, as if to say, "what has my life become?"
"Nothing to worry about friend Vars." Sparhawk pats Vars on the back (a bit harder than probably appreciated and not realizing his own strength) "I actually thought you were caught by a spell as well. Who expects to be attacked by a rug? Mental note for my combat training and experience manual, beware of all rugs.!"

"We might as well check downstairs right?"Sorsha says taking point, cautiously descending the steps of the stairway leading down into the basement, motioning for the others to folllow her, keeping a good look out for weird rugs a strange steps. (Stealth: 22 Perception: 18)
Vars grimaces slightly at the hard pat, but does his best to hide it and smile, "No, not another rug. However, it seems this Aberanth was quite adept at preserving food. In spite of the dust, everything in his pantry looks fresh. Even the breakfast left on his plate." He continues to explain everything else he'd found in the room. "Not sure if we will find anything else useful in there, but I might give it another look. Since the chair has been moved, I would assume that the kitchen was not the place he was taken from. Perhaps he'd just prepared his breakfast and sat down, when he heard someone come in. That would explain why the food was still on the table..." He mutters something, lost in thought again as he makes his way back to the kitchen.
You move down the stairs cautiously. The stairs creak a little bit, but seem sturdy. You get to the basement and see it is roughly the same size and shape as the kitchen. It seems there is a leak somewhere in the foundation as there is a lot of moisture in here, moss and some mold along the edges of the walls. There are several crates of various sizes as well as some wine barrels and some small barrels labeled “ pickles”.
a few of the crates have danger labels painted in common. Lots of cobwebs.

"Nice swordplay, there! You are full of surprises, hm?"
Anything under the carpet?
Under the carpet was just plain wooden planks and a copper piece.
Huh.
"If that was the welcome mat, I don't feel especially welcomed."
Remembering there's three floors to this place, Bjorn looks around for the stairs. He's half expecting there aren't any.

here is a quick map of what you can see so far

Since there's no rat-catcher, Deception: 22

Bjorn you can hear the chatter from between the walls and one of the rats yells out…” you lie…you must be the rat catcher!”
and then he hears a chorus of rat voices “ you lie, you lie!” And then silence…
