Lazarus would take a moment and glance down at Alyndra and the thought of giving her a worthwhile present was more than tempting. "I mean, It couldn't hurt and I'm sure everyone would like another venture in their future. So long as we know the jist of what we are getting ourselves into, of course."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
((Sorry for the delay in my response, I didn't read us being summoned by the Captain at first cuz it was labeled under "Sunita and Markus"))
Alyndra's gaze sharpens at the mention that the sea had magic. "Metaphorical or literal?" She questions Boerth with interest. But before they could get more into it, they were approached by another muscular sailor. The Captain certainly wasn't what she expected. The Empire wasn't exactly overflowing with the more interesting races. At mention of treasure, the half elf glances at her husband. Doing a double take at the family names being bandied about amongst the group, Alyndra can't help but laugh, smiling up at Lazarus. "I suppose I'd ask if you're ready to be a father but it seems as if it's too late."Nodding at Bosko's declaration of being clan brother she pats his forearm. "Definitely the older brother." But withdraws the hand upon seeing the bugbear look uncomfortable.
Alyndra kept quiet otherwise, rather wanting to hear the details first before agreeing to anything. The graviturgist's eyes would be kept narrowed discerningly as she listens to Captain Three Earrings explain, but they would widen at mention of acquiring magical items allowing them to breathe underwater. Once the Captain was finished explaining, the auburn haired woman would ask, "How is it you came to know all of this? You know exactly how and why the Island sank and even the name of the person responsible. You've already mentioned that people fear the Sahuagin so I can't imagine that the rise and fall of their leaders is a topic of common conversation. So how is it that you came to know? I just want to make sure we don't get in over our heads. If what you say is true regarding the item they used to cause such destruction, I agree that it most certainly shouldn't be left in their hands." She nods to Markus who had mentioned studying it.
The captain answers Alyndra, "The sea is a vast and potentially dangerous place, so it behooves any ship captain to keep close ties with other vessels that also sail up on the ocean. We are naked out here on the sea, and so in many cases, our very survival depends the information that gets passed by any number of means between ships. In other words, I hear many things through my network of allies and associates, some of which inhabit, or at least spend some time beneath the waves."
"And you are correct, to most folk, the rise and fall of underwater leaders is hardly a topic of conversation among normal folk, even those who live on the coast, but as I said, out here, our lives often depend on knowing the details of what happens on both the surface, and beneath it."
Alyndra
Alyndra can sense that tabaxi captain is trying to subtly goad you all into helping her. As someone who's also driven in part by the lure of acquiring more gold, and who always wants more for herself, on that level, Captain Three Earrings seems pretty easy to read. In some ways, she's not so very different from you, being a free-wheeling creature who's always looking for ways to acquire more wealth for her and her family, which in this case, is her crew. The only difference here, is that she's in her element out here, where you are a total newcomer in this environment. Were you in your own familiar terrain back in the land of the Empire, and you knew of a specific path to a pile of gold, would you not also try to subtly goad others into helping you acquire said treasure?
Regarding her statements about how she acquired this information, what she says seem to make perfect sense. Having already run into serious trouble during your very short time out here on the ocean, you can see how survival for everyone depends on the flow of information that gets passed between sailors and ship captains.
Alyndra peers discerningly into the tabaxi's eyes as she speaks, managing to focus on small little tells. It was hard to know if she was using her people reading skills or cat reading skills, but she felt reassured regardless. Posture relaxing as she sank her weight onto her left hip, the half elf nods at their new little family before smiling, "Alright. Making a bit of coin while securing the safety of others doesn't sound like a bad job. Provided we don't drown. You mentioned that you knew where we might be able to find magical items to allow us to breathe under water?"
Captain Three Earrings smiles, "Very well," she purrs, "Then we're a go!!"
"The way I see it, we have three possible places where we could go before we sail for the Sharkefeather Abyss. Bisaft Isle, Brokenbank and Port Damali."
"Bisaft is a tiny island, but it does have a small port. From what I've heard, there's a shaman living in the hills beyond the port who might be able to provide you with the necessary magic that will allow you breath underwater."
"Brokenbank is a little bit bigger; although both are roughly the same distance from our current position. I've docked there many a time, and I know that there's an apothecary there. She might be able to craft some potions that'll do the same thing."
"Port Damali is the furthest, but it's the biggest of the three. It's a city, if you aren't familiar with this region. I know a smith there that has lots of connections. I'm sure he could help us obtain a number of experimental diving helmets that would allow you to breathe beneath the waves."
"I'll leave it up to you. Any preference for where we should set our course?"
The possibility of learning magic to breathe underwater was intriguing, almost as much as the possibility of learning how to craft a potion to do the same thing. Nodding after Bosko spoke, Alyndra states, "I'm of the same opinion. I don't want to be used as a test with these experimental diving helms." Giving a sympathetic glance to their own tinkerer, Markus. "Especially not if it's the furthest. I'm familiar with alchemy and the arcane though so either of the other options sound welcoming to me. Shall we put it to a vote?"
Alyndra shake her head with a fond smile, "Nein albern. I mean to vote for where we should go. Bisaft, where a shaman is or Brokenbank, where an apothecary is. Unless you really want to go as far as Port Damali."
Markus is tempted to see the blueprints of the diving helmets but he rarely have confidence in others tinkering. “I’d better create a helmet myself. I have been actually working on an idea that combine a cape with the capability of breathing underwater, unfortunately it is far from being ready” he said. “But in the meantime, I am ok to go see this shaman”
Captain Three Earrings responds, "Roight... Bisaft Isle it is, then! I'll notify the crew to make course immediately. If we don't have any complications, we should be there by sunset tomorrow."
With that, he nods to the dark skinned man who led you down here. He leads you back up onto the main deck and after looking at his map and making measurements, he alerts the crew make course for Bisaft. The sailors scurry about making the adjustments, turning the ship in a straight west heading, and then resume their relaxing activities, playing cards, talking with some of the refugees, watching for sea life and visiting with you.
During the course of the afternoon, you learn the names of the rest of the crew:
Boerth (Male Human). Is the darkly handsome man from Port Damali who was talking with Alyndra and Lazarus before. He seem to have a keen mind for games of chance.
Dajarkal (Female Half-Orc). This is the woman who was talking with Bosko before. She's oft-spoken and its apparent that she likes animals more than other people. She joined Wavechaser’s crew a week ago in Nicodranas.
Dillyu (Male Sea Elf). This green-complexioned fellow joined the crew only a few days before. Dillyu spent most of his life in Port Zoon after losing his family to a sahuagin raid as a child, and he hates the sea devils with a passion.
Heidi Axebeard (Female Dwarf). The ship’s pilot and first mate, she seems to have a knack for predicting the weather. She hails from Grimgolir in the Dwendalian Empire but has spent decades navigating the sea. Heidi has fought sahuagin on multiple occasions but has never seen them wield magic like whatever caused Flora Isle to sink beneath the sea.
Kijori (Male Human). This tan-skinned man is the ship’s navigator. Despite his muscled physique, he isn’t very strong. An obvious philanderer (he's the one who has been hitting on numerous refugee women, mostly unsuccessfully. He hails from Port Damali, and you get the impression that he's a bit of a fool.
((Feel free to engage with any of the crew, or talk amongst yourselves, and let me know how you pass the time during the long afternoon aboard the ship.))
Sunita spends time with Heidi discussing combat strategies against the sahuagin, she also converses with a lot of the refugee women....particularly when she sees Kijori headed their way.
”You from under sea? What it like?”, he asks. “Are creatures friends under sea?”, he inquires, interested to know whether they should treat all creatures as dangerous.
Wandering the deck, Sunita is able to keep a few of the refugee women engaged enough to keep Kijori fro hitting on them. Some of the refugees were residents of Palma Flora, but many are visitors from other parts of the Menagerie Coast.
In her conversation with Heidi, Sunita learns a few things about fighting sahaguin from the dwarf, who has battled with the sea devils numerous times. They are, as she explains, a predatory race that often ventures from the ocean's depths to hunt the creatures of the shallows and shore, and she tells you that they're driven into a frenzy by the smell of fresh blood.
"Them sea devils are no walk in the park, but that slimy skin they got ain't so thick. As ya' might've seen, it's pretty easy ta stick yer blade into 'em. However, if they manage ta land a hit on you... watch out. They get a whole lot more dangerous when they draw blood. An' don't let 'em double up on ya. Than happens, and you can find yourself in a grim sitch-ee-ation, 'specially if yer bleedin'.
Talking with Dillyu, Bosko learns a bit about him, and about sea elves.
"Yes, when I was young, my family lived in a small community in the ocean shallows. That's where I lived when the sea devils attacked and killed my parents. After that, I lived mostly in Port Zoon."
"There are many perils in the world, but for us sea elves, none are as deadly as the sahuagin. The animosity between our two races stems from the sahuagin’s ferocious territoriality. They simply won’t abide any other intelligent society, and they consider the entire sea to be their domain. Were it not for us, they might control the oceans. Wars between sauaghuin and sea elves have raged for centuries across the coasts and seas of the world, often disrupting maritime trade and drawing other races into the bloody conflict."
"Aside from them, though, yes... there are many friendly creatures under the sea. Of course, many are dangerous predators, likegiants crabs, giant eels, kraken, and sharks, especially those who are telepathically controlled by the sea devils, but creatures like dolphins, whales, porpoises, belugas, octopi, sea otters, seals and sea lions, manta rays even lots of fish are usually friendly. Treat them with respect and you'll be surprised at how they respond in kind."
"No, they are not cursed, at least not in the sense that most of us consider. Sahaguin simply view the entire aquatic realm as their kingdom and the creatures in it as blood sport for their hunting pleasure. On the contrary, those of us who have suffered from their raids and lost loved ones are the ones who are cursed; cursed to live the rest of our days with the memories of the friends and family who were savagely butchered by those horrible sea devils."
"What about you? You are goblin kin, are you not? I have grown up hearing stories about goblin raids and the monstrous invaders that inhabit the great forest to the north. Are all goblin kind cursed, and if so why are you not angry and sadlike those you speak of?"
“Elders of clan had curse lifted before was born. Happy for having free choice. Sad for those that not”, Bosko replies simply and excuses himself in order to get some rest.
