Lazarus would give out a light sigh as Alyndra wanted to see the land off and he would watch as she took off to the upper deck. It took him a few moments before letting out a defeated breath and pulling himself up, slapping his cheeks lightly before making his way up to the upper deck himself. He would use his hand to shield his eyes from the light of the day with little success.
He would look around and find Alyndra starring off at the now disappearing land to which he take in a deep breath. Being on the ship itself wasn't all that bad so long as he didn't have to actually Get into the water. He would look around at the sailors and for just a moment, wondered what would happen if he did get sticky fingers but left the thought. Doing crime on a boat wouldn't end well as someone would eventually find out they were missing something.
Though at this point, he would aim to find the rear of the ship, something about watching the waves tumble behind them would give him a better state of mind and maybe find someone to chat with.
Seeing Markus magically mend the railing, Alyndra's expression lit up in delight, sliding next to the human. "Is that what you use to focus your magic?" She asks, nodding to his rune etched staff, green eyes shinning with curiosity behind her glasses. Her hand draws out from the side of her belt a ten inch long ebony wand, showing it to the man before beginning to twirl it idly in the fingers of her right hand. "Did you not buy any rations before we set off?" Remembering his comment about hoping to get paid in food for helping mend around the ship. "Didn't get your....LyreBeam? To make food for you after all?" Not quite remembering the name of the device he had mentioned in passing last night correctly. Catching sight of Lazarus as he emerged from below deck, she couldn't help but smile warmly at his squinting expression, knowing he was hating the sunlight but still appreciating him coming up in spite of it. Still she couldn't pull herself away from the other magic caster, not having the chance to speak with someone else besides her partner about such things since...she could barely remember. "Do you know a lot of magic? What sorts do you know? Do you have a favorite spell?"
Markus smiles as a welcoming gesture and points at his staff "Alyndra it is, right ? Yes my staff here is the conduit of my magic. Not entirely sure how this magic thing works, working on it. ". Markus then quickly check if something was attached to his fishing hook, but no luck... " The fishing part is just for fun. I do have rations but what a cool thing to able to fish your own dinner, no ? My GyroBeam can only gives light for now, I haven't finish upgrading it.I do have other projects that takes up my time. "
Markus sees that Alyndra is in the mood of talking magic. He place his fishing rod on the side but locked against the railing so it doesn't go anywhere and continues: "Magic... I do know a bit, maybe now as much as a wizard. But enough to help in most circumstances. So far I learned to do small repairs on objects but also living things. I found a way to slow down your fall. Otherwise my staff can shoot acid and fire. But I'm sure I can do more, working on it everyday."
"What about you, it seems you dab in the arcane. Anything interesting that you can do ?"
Bosko wanders over to his fishing line and checks the tension, holding it in a surprisingly gently way for his big furry hands, but finds nothing has been hooked (Survival: 8 in game log).
He looks about the deck for a place to sit and relax whilst he keeps a weather eye out for trouble and stay out the way of the sailors.
He really isn't sure exactly what he looking for, if a ship comes into view, surely the person in the crow's nest would spot it first. He looks up the main mast to make sure someone is up there. That would be a good spot, just likely occupied.
He looks for someone to ask, maybe the first mate.
"I go up to top?", he says pointing at the crow's nest.
For those of you who fish, you discover, and are also told by a couple of the crew members who see you, that it's actually pretty hard to catch anything while the boat is moving at a steady clip like this. But, of course, the activity can still be fun, because, you never know... anything is possible. Unfortunately, throughout the morning, neither Bosko nor Markus get any bites on their lines.
In addition, you are told that there is enough food and fresh water available on board for all the crew members and passengers. It's nothing special, mostly hard biscuits, oranges and hunks of cheese, but it's enough so that no-one will go hungry during the two-day trip. The food is to be found in the hold, and there's a barrel of fresh water on the main deck, as well as one in the hold.
As you observe the crew, you see that most of them are simple sailors who carry nothing on them and probably have very few personal possessions anyway, except for the single knife that most of them wear on their belts. The captain, who obviously has higher status, has his own cabin, and Diego is staying in one of the other passenger cabins. The twenty crew members are a mix of able-bodied men and women, who fill a variety of roles. There's a first mate, a Bosun, who provides technical advice to the captain and crew and leads repair and maintenance efforts on the ship, a Quartermaster, who plots the ship’s course, and the regular sailors.
As the morning progresses and turns into early afternoon, you watch out over the water. At one point, you see a school of reef sharks off the right bow jumping and swimming together as they hunt for prey in the relatively shallow waters of the reef. You also see numerous scattered fishing boats parked in this area, as it's a very plentiful fishing grounds.
By mid afternoon, The Sea Spirit is all alone out on the water, with no ships in sight. When Bosko asks the sailor if he can to up to the crow's nest, he responds in the affirmative, allowing Bosko to climb up there and take a look. Just climbing and being up there is pretty exciting, especially to feel the cool, salty breeze and be up high near amidst the main sails, and the view is a little better, but during his time spent up there, he doesn't see anything out of the ordinary.
Overall, having never been out on the open sea before, you take in the excitement of the new experience of traveling out on the big open water, and you can't help but imagine what it will be like to arrive in Palma Flora, what you might see on the way there, and what kind of strange world, possible hazards and even treasure hide below the surface in the depths of the ocean.
Sunita stays at the bow on watch for many hours and then after noting nothing falls asleep up against the gunwale at the bow.....rather outside than inside as the wind on her face seems to allay any threat of her stomach rebelling from the motion of the vessel.
She drifts off to a troubled sleep of blood and screams, but perhaps there is some comfort now too....
Nodding at his statement of her name she clarified, "That's me. Markus, yes? I take it that you're new to learning magic then. Having something that can shed light without fear of setting fires is useful. Especially if you can't see well in the dark. I haven't met anyone that has made a magic item themselves. The fact that you've made this is impressive enough alone, but you say you can...upgrade? It even further?"The half elf's eyebrows were raised in amazement. "I've heard of strange new inventions from the city of Port Zoon but haven't really seen such things myself. Are you from Port Zoon?"
There was a small young part of her that felt warm at his statement that he didn't know as much as a wizard but was more focused on something else the human said. "You can heal? That's very helpful." She considered what he could do before beginning to list off even as a translucent purple hand appeared from thin air and began twirling her wand between its fingers, "I can mend small things as well. Set magical alarms, shield myself, sense magic around me and...."The brunette pointed at the man, her lips barely moving as he heard in his mind clearly, "Send messages and throw some offensive spells." Just a hint of a smirk playing at the friendly smile on her lips.
After spending a bit of time conversing with Markus about the arcane, Alyndra would retreat to the comfort of her husband's presence and crack open a small book with a latch on it from her back pocket. Reviewing her spell book inbetween people watching the crew.
Bosko spends a good deal of time in the crow’s nest, keeping an eye on the horizon and watching what sea life is visible. He finally climbs down and makes his way to across to the water barrel to refill his water skin, which he managed to empty. He has his spares below deck, but it was easier to refill this one.
He looks around to see if any of his companions are still wandering about on deck. There really wasn’t much to this job, he thinks as he crosses the deck. Was it really going to be money for nothing? In his experience that does not often happen, there is always something.
After being advised at the futility of trying to fish at this speed, he retrieves his line as he walks about. There should be plenty of time to use it at their destination.
After a time he will settle down somewhere to wait out the remainder of this first day.
You discover that the hours spent on the sea, especially when the weather is calm and stable with relatively flat water, go by with a surreal sense of seeming to be both slow and fast. Alternating you time between the main deck and looking out over the featureless expanse of open ocean, and going below deck to eat, drink and get out of the intense sun for awhile, you pass the rest of the afternoon by visiting with each other and with some of the sailors, and occasionally with Diego, who spends most of the time in his cabin, and just taking in this new experience.
You can't help but wonder what it's like for these sailors who spend most of their time doing this, but for as exotic as it is, you realize that for many of them, it's just a job. Some people make shoes for a living, some grow vegetables, some serve drinks in the tavern, some fight monsters and explore uncharted wild lands, and some work as sailors and merchant marines.
By early evening, you feel a warm breeze blowing in from the west, and you begin to feel more humidity in the air. As the sun dips towards the edge of the horizon, a fog beings to roll in. At first, it's just a light mist, but by the time the light begins to fade from the sky, it begins much more dense, and visibility drops severely. The captain shouts numerous commands to his crew to keep a close watch, to light numerous torches that are fixed atop the main railing, and to make noise. (One sailor's job suddenly becomes standing at the bow and ringing a bell at regular intervals). From his position being the wheel, the captain works with the Bosun to make sure the boat stays on course.
Markus feels that his help is needed on the deck. He lights up his GyroBeam to give him a bit of light and looks around for any danger like coral reefs.
Alyndra enjoyed people watching opposed to people talking. That is actually interacting with them. She usually left that to her husband who just generally got along with people better. When he could be bothered to that is. Regardless, passing the time making notes in her book and noting the steady unspoken rhythm between crewmates as shifts changed and jobs cycled through was enough to hold her attention for a while but Lazarus always found something new to excite her. Pointing out the reef sharks hunting along side the ship and even jumping up to her delight. Though the novelty of the open air above deck that was exposed to the harsh sun lost its novelty quickly for her. Retreating to where it was cooler, she offered to Diego that both herself and Markus knew how to repair small amounts of damage should the ship or anyone on the crew have use for such an ability.
After quenching her thirst, she retrieved some dinner for herself and Lazarus and went searching for him to find that he was at the back of the ship, leaning against the railing and watching the waves in the ship's wake from the comfort of the shade provided by the shadow cast by the Forecastle as they sailed towards the setting sun. Passing him the hard biscuit and jerky, she also slipped his waterskin into his belt with a 'look', knowing he didn't drink as much water as he should. The woman was quiet as she munched on her dinner, simply enjoying her partner's presence and glancing at him in between staring out at the waves before the fog began to obscure them. Taking a long pull from her own waterskin she asked the sailor that was nearby, "Is the bell just to let other ships know we're nearby so we don't crash or some other reason?" She guessed, both curious and apprehensive due to the fog.
The sailor responds to Alyndra's question, "Yep... Ain't no way ta stop quickly if we see another ship directly in front of us. The lights and sounds help make sure nobody crashes into each other."
The bell ringer keeps up the noise, with a set of clangs about once per minute as the ships slips through the fog, gently rocking on the relatively calm water. You can imagine that things would be much worse in rough seas... thankfully that's not the case, although tension are high amongst the entire crew, with everyone maintaining a general group silence as the captain calls out for any sightings from those who are keeping a close watch ahead. With extremely low visibility, he give the order to lower two of the three main sails to reduce speed.
After a short while, the last light of the evening fades into darkness, and you continue to sail into the night, with extreme low visibility as the boat creeps through the fog. This goes on for an hour, then another... then another... with an eerie silence hanging over the boat.
Then Bosko and Alyndra, and couple of the crew members, spot something off the starboard side of the boat... a dark shape in the mist. The alert is given and the gaze of most everyone on the boat shifts in that direction. It would seem to be another ship, but it's still too dark to tell... at first. Then you seem to getting closer, although being off to the side, there's no real danger of a collision. By now, you can indeed tell it's another ship, but you can't really discern any details. It's running no lights, and you hear no bell, nor do you hear any voice or any other sounds coming from that direction.
The captain takes careful notice, although even with his eyes trained on this mystery vessel, he keep this ship's course moving straight ahead. However, you do not pass the other ship, it stays alongside you about a hundred feet away, at the same relative speed.
Bosko watches the outline of the other ship, the distance being too far to see much detail at all. The fur on the back of his neck stands on end as a foreboding feeling comes across him.
He turns to look at the Captain and the crew, to see if they had a similar sense of disquiet. Surely this wasn't normal.
He hears Sunita's question, a little relieved it wasn't just himself that thought this odd. He awaits the response, but reaches his large hands down to the bear claws at his belt, drawing them out and staying still and quiet.
Markus runs towards the side of the boat, intrigued by this ghostly ship. "Hallo !!!! Anybody here ?" He then places his Goggles of Night and, from his staff, shoots afire bolt in the air, far enough not to touch anything and hoping the light for the spell will permit to see the occupant of the other boat.
Responding to Sunita's inquiry, while keeping his eyes trained on the mysterious ship, the sailor answers, "Uhh... yea... I'd say so. If it were a regular merchant ship, it'd show lights and answer our noise with a signal. Somethin' 'bout this ain't right."
As if to confirm, when Markus calls out, he gets no response. His flame arrow across the bow, but the light is too dim to illuminate anything.
The captain and the rest of the crew continue to regard the ship with suspicion, as they keep the Sea Spirit moving steadily through the water. The other ship follows with the same motion, running in a parallel track, but then at one point, one of the sailors calls out, "Cap'n, she's gettin' closer!"
Sure enough, as you watch the other ship, it becomes apparent that it's shifted its course slightly and has now closed the distance by one third. A little more of the ship comes into view, and as it does, you can faintly make out the details of its tattered sails that flitter about in the wind.
In response, the captain calls out to the other ship. "Announce yourself, or we'll fire open fire!!" He then gives the order for his crew to load an arrow into the ballista.
Sunita allowed herself a tight smile, " It is.", she whispered.

Markus find a good spot with a bit of cover and gets ready to shot his Fire Bolt
