Mina's over-the-top performance is attracting some stares and whispers from nearby tables, and Loris suddenly seems to become aware of the eyes of the crowd. He instinctively pulls his hands back from Mina's as she grasps him, and after a slight resistance, the ring flies off with an audible pop and clatters to the floor. The merchant looks down in surprise, not exactly comprehending how the ring left his finger, and a range of expressions flit across his features as his thoughts race. He looks at Mina's face, and a few furrows have appeared on his brow.
He stands and bends down to retrieve the ring. Straightening, he offers his arm to Mina and says, "Yes, let us tour the kitchen."
(Sorry, after the big reveal, it was unclear to me where you wanted to go next.)
"Y'all still want to see the office and the lockbox?"Tymothy asks. "Otherwise, I'll return to the party, and leave you to it. Even as distracted as he is, I suppose Mr. Donegall will notice if all of you are gone for very long, so you might want to come back soon."
"Let us proceed." says Correal, appreciating the sheriff's trust. "We can see if we can wrap this up together quickly and either way, return together with you. I should let you know that I have communicated your terms telepathically to our party. We are in agreement. Also, a few are seeking the documents currently while others are keeping their eyes on our host. Let us go help those in the office and if we can't then we at least can coordinate our efforts better together."
(If you spend 3 min studying the portraits, roll perception at advantage. Otherwise, a cursory glance reveals nothing that's particularly weirder than anything else about the paintings)
(So we'll cut away from Tamryn, as three minutes is a noticeable amount of game time elapsed.)
The sheriff conducts Jhaartael and Kyrsa down the hall, passing the southward corridor, to the far end of the house, where a wooden door carved with arboreal motifs is set in the southern wall. Tymothy opens the door and leads you into a 30x30 room with some bookshelves and cabinets along the back wall, an ornate wooden desk in the center of the room, and several comfortable chairs. There is a window in the western wall, covered by a curtain. He crosses behind the desk to one of the cabinets, opens it, and reveals a metal box, 2x1x1 bolted to the wall behind. Producing a key, he opens the box, revealing it to be almost empty. A few minor trinkets are in the bottom. "It's mostly a lost and found, no one really wears expensive jewelry or carries anything that important around here, except Loris." Many of the other nearby shelves and cabinets contain neatly organized files, ledgers, inventory books, payroll records and other business related documents.
Mina and the merchant, meanwhile, pass through the servant's door into a bustling and expansive kitchen, with several woodstoves, ovens and preparation tables all in full use. an archway to the north leads into a larder, and servants pass back and forth retrieving supplies. In the southern wall is a door to the exterior, presumably a servant's entrance and for deliveries. As she passes by them, Loris introduces the sea elf to the chef, the winemaster and the head of housestaff. He then leads her into the larder.
"Now my dear, Milena was it? Please explain to me in detail what sorts of trade you propose with Digby's Gulch. What are you looking to sell, and what to buy? How do you propose to move your goods back and forth from the coast? Will you employ a particular teamsters' guild? Which one? I am familiar with most all of them..." He says, looking at her intently.
Akyan and Lyndaran remain in the banquet room and gameroom respectively, and can submit their actions at any time.
Anyone with a scholarly or business background may roll Investigation at advantage if they wish to spend 10 minutes going through the financial records.
While walking, Correal will let relay to the sheriff that Ki and Milena may have run into a snag with Loris.
When they get to the room where the lock box is contained, upon NOT seeing any of his confederates here, will relay to Akyan that the sheriff has taken them to a different room than where Tamryn is apparently.
Mina greets everyone she meets with a warm smile as the merchant leads her around, smelling all the scents of the kitchen. As he leads her into the larder and starts quizzing her, she steps back a bit, but gives him a warm smile completely keeping her cool.
"This is an interesting spot to conduct business.. is that typical for you? Yes, my name is Milena.. do you like it?" she smiles at him a bit coyly, but doesn't push as she knows she is on thin ice, but tries to keep up the pretense of where they were. "As you can imagine, being a sea elf, of course I have fishing trade to sell. But, I also have access to many different things..Litchi fruit, rice, ginger, tea.. sometimes even exotic flora and fauna, depends on the time of year. Well, as for transport, I am close to the Golden Way which makes things easier, but the details of that was mainly up to Correal. But, you are familiar with most of the teamsters' guilds? Well that's great! We should talk with him and you two can settle on one that you're both happy with."Mina clasps her hands together in excitement. "Shall we go find him?"
Akyan would have followed Mina and Loris. If asked about it he would say he would like to look around as well. He follows slightly behind the two. When Mina mouths "I'm sorry," Akyan responds by tilting his head slightly. Then he telepathically let's Jhaartael and Tamryn know what happened. "Didn't get the ring. Mina tried, and wasn't able to get it either. It didn't go as badly as I thought, but Loris may be a bit suspicious of Mina. He's questioning her about our business. She suggested they go and find Correal, so stay alert. You all should try to search everywhere else the documents might be before we try for the ring again. Perhaps even ask the Sheriff if he knows what is in that case. If he knows, we might not even need the ring."
Tymothy listens to Jhaartael, but simply shrugs. "If Mr. Donegall calls for me to get involved I'll see what I can do. But let me be clear: I'm not actively helping you do whatever it is you're here to do. I agreed to not hinder you, but I'm not going to participate in your 'mission'; I still don't fully understand who you are or what your true motives are. I appreciate that you claim you are here to altruistically help me, but in my experience, 'there ain't no such thing as a free lunch' so I'm just looking the other way for now, until I can figure out exactly what's going on."
Loris notes Akyan trailing behind with some annoyance, but does not say anything. Upon hearing Mina's responses, he seems to consider for a moment, and then relax a bit. "Good, good. That sounds wonderful. Yes, let's return to your companions... but before we do, I'd like to ask your opinion on something. I've heard that the larger merchant guilds on the coast are switching from single-entry bookkeeping to double-entry, and I was thinking of adopting that too. Can you tell me your experience with this, and the advantages of changing over?"
By this time, Tamryn has noticed that in the scene of the speech in town square there is a vendor in the background selling flowers, and the same flowers are seen in a vase in the library painting. On the saddle of the hunting horse and the bow of the sailing ship the name "Iris" is painted.
Kyrsa nods in understanding and says to Tymothy, "We understand. There is no need to risk yourself for us. And I understand that if one of my allies slips up and draws attention, you will be forced to apprehend us. Thank you for what information you already gave, we will ask for nothing more."
She looks around the room, then addresses Jhaartael, "I have a feeling he wouldn't keep it somewhere this obvious. So unless you think we should look around a bit, we might want to head back to the party. We have already been back here long enough to arouse suspicion if our host noticed our absence. Perhaps we should return to make sure Malina is doing alright."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Lyndaran tries to find anything useful at the game room. Like forgotten written pieces of paper or something hidden behind tapestries or paintings in the wall.
Akyan notices Loris's annoyance but doesn't say or do anything about it. He figures it would only annoy him more if he did anything. When they enter the Larder, he hangs back and waits for them near the door, staying within hearing range of the two. Hopefully Mina knows something about these bookkeeping things the merchant was talking about. He for one has no idea why adding single or double entries mattered, but then again, he never had any kind of schooling. As he waits for the two to come back out, he sends a message to Jhaartael, "It may be best if you come back. We are in the Larder. Loris is asking Mina some questions about bookkeeping or something. I'm not sure if he is trying to test her or if he is genuinely interested."Then he asks Tamryn, "Have you two found anything yet? Do you still think we need that ring?" He tries to think of another way to get it. Loris would likely be a bit on guard since what happened with Mina. If it came to it, they could probably get him alone and force him to give up the ring without alarming the party guests. This would be a last resort, but if it came to it, it might be their only option. As he thinks to himself, he looks around the kitchen watching the servants and observing the layout of the room. He doubts the documents would be hidden here, too many servants, but he looks for anything significant anyways. He also pays attention to how the servants are acting.
Mina smiles at Loris, "It would definitely be a good idea in my opinion. Single entry is definitely easier, but also allows for errors and harder to catch fraud. Being able to account for the goods coming in and the gold going out or vice versa gives a much better picture of your business than just tracking one side of it. It is definitely more cumbersome though, I am not one that deals with that intimately."

Tamryn looks for clues to the combination in the portraits, and also looks behind and on the back of each of them.
