Rynwell stands surprised by the show of strength, of will, of courage, even as Gewyn's form collapses to the ground lifeless, and is absorbed there until nothing remains.
As she looks at Vin, he sees the anger and resentment leave her face, she listens to his words and watches him set her base tree alight, but she does not react, she simply says "your heart is something unique boy, never have I seen a demonic spawn with such willingness to help, but you should know... some people are beyond saving, and some people are worth giving everything for, you must decide which is which..."
She gestures around herself to the area that vin stands in, now alone with just Rynwell, he notices that the fog has been rolling in inch by inch since the other sisters left, this plane slowly disappearing "this is not my conscious mind, merely a memory driven by my subconscious. when you leave here know that your words will not touch me, and I will not remember your kindness, my body was not the only thing that was corrupted by the infernal planes, desperation is powerful, and-" Rynwell stops moving, as though someone froze her mid sentence, the fog licks at the back of her legs and slowly swallows her whole, then everything goes black for Vin.
As she fades away he'll say "I'm sorry this happened to you rynwell. You might not remember me saying this but... I wish you never had to suffer so. That you didn't fall to this evil. I'll do what I can to give you peace. You might not be able to be saved, but you're not all gone. Help me stop what you've become."
Gewyn opens his eyes with a sharp inhale of breath, his hands are tied above his head with a rope and his feet dangle off the ground, the pain from the dagger he had forced through his stomach remains and looking down so does the physical dagger, apparently one of the only things that was real whilst he was being distracted within Rynwell's mental battlefield. Vin finds himself in exactly the same position hands tied and dangling, dagger in the stomach, the single rope above them meets in the middle and is held aloft by a flying broom stick. Below them both, a swirling portal churns, the edges blaze with the sulphurous infernal energy which and slowly encroaches upon a void, in the center of which the smallest mote of green light can be seen, flickering and threatening to be snuffed out at any moment. The blood dripping from the dagger wounds of Vin and Gewyn as they hang there seem to encourage the takeover of the infernal energy in the portal.
Taking stock of their less immediate surroundings, it appears that they are inside the twisted and root tightened enclosure, in the portal room that they had found. Around them they see the remains of Gara, the guard who had helped them travel across the country, his body lays in two pieces on the floor, separated at the waist and making a large blood stain in the ground surrounding the portal. Further around the portal they see a dragonborn hunter, his brilliant white scales stained red as his head has been caved in completely, his corpse is flanked by Sam and Neferox, Sam's maul still dripping with the contents of the hunter's skull.
Elthana leaps forward toward the portal and disappears in a flash of black smoke and shadow, appearing once more atop the broom where she grabs the front of it and fights it's protests, guiding it a little towards the edge of the portal and attempting to bring Vin and Gewyn out of the way of potentially falling into an unknown oblivion, Muir uses his thorn whip to wrap around the middle of the broom's shaft and pulls toward himself, assisting Elthana in guiding the two to safety. With the pair working together, they force the broom to move ten foot, closer to the edge but not out of danger.
Suddenly, Rynwell appears, chanting, in all of her burnt, blackened, corruption riddled splendour, she appears behind Elthana, as if stepping out of thin air and effortlessly balances on the back of the broom. She swings at Elthana with her blackened claws, attempting to push her off the broom with the force of the strike, (23 to hit, 17 Slashing damage). Elthana for all of her deformed disadvantages somehow manages to stay on the broom (22 dex save), Meanwhile Rynwell whips around, anger burning across her face, and igniting the infernal power in her chest, the chanting never ceasing, she casts ray of enfeeblement on Sam's enlarged form.
Sam was considering throwing the remains of the Dragonborn into the portal - it did seem a handy way to dispose of the unwanted - when a commotion distracted him back to looking towards the portal. Elthana was doing some crazy gymnastics shit, it seemed, but so too was the hag?!?
The hag attacks Elthana and then turns and casts a spell of some kind at Sam. He ducks and charges forward, best he can tell he avoided the attack. She was still high up in the air though and Sam, unsure if he can reach her with the maul, draws out one and then another hand axe and chucks it at her… (Sam moves 30 feet towards hag and then attacks…)
First Axe: 26 to hit. 12 Damage. Plus 4 more due to Giant’s Might.
Assuming that hits, Sam will invoke his Fire Rune to due an extra 10 Damage still, AND she must make DC 14 STR save or be restrained for 1 minute. While restrained by the shackles, the target takes 2d6 fire damage at the start of each of its turns. The target can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, banishing the shackles on a success.
Second Axe: 28 to hit (nat 20)!! For 21 total Damage…
(maybe should have saved Fire Rune for 2nd hit so those dice doubled too? But no… Sam would have invoked on first hit as there may not be a second…)
So 47 total Dam if both hit, plus she must save vs fiery shackles…
Both hand axes fly seamlessly through the air connecting with their target, she gasps and raises her voice in pain but somehow continues chanting, the flames of the shackles sprout but are quickly shaken off as Rynwell avoids the runic magic intended to restrain her.
Gewyn gasps with pain as he returns to his senses. He struggles against the rope binding his wrists for a moment, but then goes still. The red once again drains from his face as he returns to his pale, changeling form. Once again, his muscles shrink, his face grows gaunt, and his wrists become narrow and boney. Once again, he tries to work a hand free, but he only gets it as far as the base of his hand. He looks up. "Elthana! You're alive! And I'm alive!" He coughs up blood. An axe whizzes past his face, bringing his attention to Sam.
Then he feels someone at his back. "Vin? Is that you? Hey, I've just decided we're going to get out of this, okay? So... hang in there."
When Rynwell appears behind her, Elthana is still blessed with the Raven Queen's shadow protection, so only half of the slashing damage finds purchase on Elthana's skin. She desperately holds on to the broomstick as the mad woman attempts to send her into the portal below.
Hearing her friends attack the hag, she finds the strength to ignore the wicked woman and concentrate on her friends as their lives are in utter danger. As they wake up below her, a real smile stretches across her broken face and she responds to Gewyn, "Yes! yes we are for now. Thank the gods you two are now with us. Hang on!"
Drawing from inspiration, Elthana uses all her might and is able to get the broomstick another 10' and away from over the portal. Satisfied that her friends are no longer dangling over it and their blood is no longer dripping into it, she turns to face the hag, ready for whatever is to come. Not wanting her vengeance to be on Vin and Gewyn.
Much to the rising anger of Rynwell, Elthana is able to strong arm the broom over solid ground and about 5ft lower too, Vin and Gewyn now only dangle about 10ft in the air, but their predicament is a lot less bleak.
Waking up in the sudden rush of combat, the feeling of the dagger in his stomach and the insidious feeling of the portal that was below him just moments ago; it is no wonder Vin needed a moment to get his bearings. The first thing he feels is relief that his friends are all alive. The second thing he feels is a moment of comprehension when he says "Oh, Shit!"
As Elthana pulls them away from the portal Rynwell in her demonic form shows up out of no where and attacks her. Vin says "Thank Elthana." All while chanting an insidious spell. Vin was going to cast something to interrupt her casting as well but there was a major problem. Vin was all tied up. He needed to make some precise hand movement to cast most of his spells and until someone cuts him free he doesn't have a lot of options. He did have one though. He reaches his fingers out to touch Gewyn and casts a level two cure wounds that was stored on the ring he had. As it was already cast he doesn't need to move or say anything. He just needs to activate it and luckily he's right next to Gewyn to cast it on him.
Cure Wounds: 10 Healed on Gewyn.
As he does this though the real problem is Rynwell chanting. It's obvious a key component to the ritual changing the portal. There was so little light left against the infernal power closing off all hope. He can't stop her with magic but he has another option. He thinks to himself, (sorry Rynwell. I'd save you if I could.) She is using every fiber of her being to concentrate and not lose her pacing with the chanting. To keep that steady perfect chant while taking axes to her body, fiery chains lashing her, and divine energy slamming into her she must need so much concentration for this. On a level that she can't misstep on once. He was going to make her lose concentration. He was going to anger her.
"Rynwell! That memory. You didn't choose to put us in it did you. I saw what you regret. What you used to want. Why didn't you help Mireah after Tialha loss? Why is it Shionne was able to move on but you couldn't? I'll tell you why, because under all that rage and hate you know, deep down, you're to blame for the three of you falling apart." The words, stinging even if only based on partial truths. It's possible this was all he needed to say but he could bring it further. He hated himself for saying them but he had no other way to stop her and an idea of what Rynwell's pain is. If he was ever going to stand a chance to get her to stop her incantation it would be to reply in rage to this... "Do you even care about Tialha anymore? I bet Shionne does."
Persuasion to get an angry reply from Rynwell breaking the incantation: 19
Neferox starts running, bounding across the very edge of the portal and around to Sam, where she leaps on top of his back and uses his large height to springboard herself forward, over the remaining section of portal and managing to dice teeth first at the rope just above vin's hands (20 to hit, 7 damage) the rope is severely damaged, the section of it bitten begins to fray, but for now hangs on by a ridiculously thin thread. Neferox herself falls, sprawled out in the floor near Muir.
Rynwell scowls, hearing the words of Vin, her chant comes to a stop, just before it's conclusion. She leans down over the broom and close to vin, "you know nothing about what I care for, they left me, they both left me, they have done nothing to bring her back! But they will see... it's too late now, the ritual is nearly complete, all that is left is to complete the sacrifice, First the Fae born and then you!" With that she shouts out the final word of the ritual completing the chant, and then the ground begins to rumble.
The smell of Sulphur gets worse as the ground shakes, the sound of something getting closer boring its way from under you all, suddenly the ground of the chamber cracks, several fault lines open and reveal bubbling lava underneath. The swirling flame outlining the portal has almost swallowed the void that surrounds the final sliver of Fae magic, the mote of green light in the center which struggles and flickers even more.
Rynwell slashes her claws at Gewyn's wrists which are outstretched and bound just below her, all the while not taking her gaze from Vin, as if showing him the consequences for his spiteful words. (21 to hit, 13 Slashing)
Looking about him as the world breaks, Sam is clueless about what is going on. He does know it’s the hag’s fault though. Somehow throwing her in the portal wasn’t enough… next time he won’t let his hands off her til she is done.
With that in mind, Sam bends at the knees and then jumps up in the air to try to get level with the hag and grab her up in his arms like a bear hug.., but violenter.
Athletics Check: (adv due to Giant’s Might, dis due to exhaustion, so straight roll…) 23
Assuming Sam has the hag grappled, Sam uses the rest of his movement to drag he away from the portal and attempts to cover her mouth with one of his large hands to prevent her from more chanting. (Not sure how much movement jumping up costs, but drags he away half of whatever is left…)
If he was unable to get ahold of the witch, Sam uses he second attack yo try again.
Second Athletics Check: 15
If that one works, same plan. If that one fails then Sam growls in frustration and tries to lean forward to act like a ramp for Neferox again…
As Sam leaps up, he manages to grab Rynwell's leg, dragging her off the broom and into a grapple as she lands on him, (20 strength contest, Sam wins) now in the bear hug he takes her 15ft towards the edge of the area and covers her mouth.
Muir watches the hag slice at Gewyn in horror that the ritual is almost complete. Muir races up to Vin's feet reaches up and jumps yanking him down and untying him. He then casts Healing Word on Gewyn healing him of 10HPs.
As Muir jumps, he grabs Vin by the ankle and uses his sheer weight to snap the rope, which sends both Vin and Gewyn tumbling after, Muir only has the time to untie Vin's hands before casting the healing on Gewyn, which unfortunately leaves Gewyn's hands still tied.
Elthana is now the only one in the air, standing, balanced on the thin shaft of wood that makes up the majority of the flying broom, it would be an impressive feat for any normal person, but the state of Elthana's buckled and backwards bending knee, makes her dexterity and determination all the more impressive.
Seeing Sam successfully grapple the old hag, Elthana sees there is no need to continue to try and balance on this broom. Sweat is dripping down her forehead, either from the heat or from the exertion of trying to stay upright.. she isn't sure.
She finds Gewyn and awkwardly prepares herself to jump off the broom next to him... somehow she accomplishes it and lands upright. Wiping the sweat from her brow, she hobbles over to his hands and begins to untie him. As she does she whispers, "Those iron bands... I think they would be most helpful right now. Your turn to kick some ass and put her in her place."
Rolling off his back and the now splintered arrow sticking out of it, Gewyn winces, vision swimming. But Elthana's voice cuts through the fog. He nods his head, putting a hand on her shoulder as he pushes himself unsteadily to his feet. Limping slowly toward Sam and Rynwell, he pulls the iron bands off his belt with one hand. He grunts as his other hand pulls the dagger in his stomach free.
He hefts the ball of iron bands in his hand and hurls it, eliciting a wince from him. He clutches hi stomach wound for a moment. As the ball flies towards Rynwell, it expands into a tangle of iron.
(Attack: 15)
Worried his wounds through off his aim, Gewyn doesn't wait to see the result, throwing himself towards Rynwell's body with his full weight behind the dagger he'd pulled from his stomach.
(Attack: 21 Damage 6 [if it has normal dagger stats.])
The ball of iron bands stretch out like the legs or a spider, but then fall short of the hag, whipping around and returning into their ball form on the floor. Gewyn's dagger does find its mark though, Rynwell screams out as he sinks it into her chest.
