Vin sees the egg hunters that have exposed themselves die, but knows there is one more inside the roc, and the roc looks in really bad shape.
And so he invokes death and life centred on the chest of the Roc. Sapping the life out of the egg hunter buried within the monstrous bird, whilst giving life to it.
Neferox, seeing no target, moves up close to the Roc and readies herself to bite the last egg hunter if it shows itself
Vin
Action: Cast Wither and Bloom level 3 on the Rocs Chest. DC 17 Con Save for Egg hunter. 6+5+2=13 [necrotic] damage on fail, 6 [necrotic] on success. Roc gets to roll 2 hit dice adding +5.
Neferox
Movement: Circles around Roc to get better angle to attack the egg hunter if it appears Action: Ready bite egg hunter if it appears Bite - Attack: 12+7=19, Damage: 2+2+6=10 [magical piercing] - if hit it must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Not being able to see what is happening is more than frustrating, but vin knows the feeling of when his magic takes hold of a target and when it fails, he suspects that things have gone his way, a feeling that is confirmed as colour begins to return to the necrotic damaged wounds in its chest, though it still looks far from healthy.
Muir stands near the hurt Roc and looks to the others "Without any instruments to aid the roc the only 2 things I have is my trunk which I could suck whatever is left inside out. I have done this before when in a pinch. It is not enjoyable for me but alas it is what it is. Or I could direct my thorns inside and hope to yank what is in, out. However, without knowing what is exactly inside this is difficult as well. Any suggestions?"
Even as egg hunters fall one by one, Gewyn feels heartbroken for the roc, losing all of its young and in such horrifying fashion. Though he knows in other circumstances, they may have had to fight each to the death, sometimes little twists in fate change everything. Now the fight is not to lose this creature's life. He starts to sing a calming song with no particular language or lyrics, and makes his way to a part of the roc near to where he can sense the remaining egg-hunter holing up. He reaches out his hand and touches the large creature, and weaving his song over it. For a short time, perhaps he can hide the roc from death.
"Firstly, explain to them both that whatever we do, even if it further hurts the injured one, we have enough magics to make sure they do not die... So try to stay calm and don't get attacky just because something looks bad," Sam suggests.
"Secondly, the ones left inside? How many? Are we sure? That spell that drew the others out... Could we try that again? What happens if they die inside it and we don't get them out?" Sam asks, trying to actually think about the problem. "And do they have a favorite food? Something that could be used to lure them out?"
"I think we all are food to those foul creatures. And the spell that is making them look for other things to attack.. it is still on it, I believe. This is all new to me, but at least it seems to be working some. Honestly Muir, either of those sound both rotten and at least something. If it doesn't come out this round, you should probably try one of them?"
And with that Etlhana readies an attack if the egg hunter shows itself, unsure of what else to do.
“If more are in there we will extract them but I fear that they were using him as an incubator….if they laid eggs inside…..Griff and Hector do you know more about these foul creatures incubation habits?”
Hector gives a slightly panicked shrug before Griff pipes up, flying forward to be near direct over the injured Roc "they are incubating inside their prey, then their hatchlings are eating their way out and finding a new nest to be continuing the process, we kill these things here now, they might not have been able to lay in a few days, the other roc being left alone by the remaining adults pretending to be eggs is meaning that it might not have happened too long ago... At least I am hoping" again Griff has an arrow drawn and readies himself if another hunter becomes visible the other in his beak for quick reloading.
The injured Roc groans and shifts uncomfortably as something moves inside of it. It's chest wounds leak blackened liquidised flesh and fresh blood, then suddenly the last egghunter bursts out of one of the wounds. Immediately Elthana, Neferox and Griff's attacks land. Elthana's attacks shock the egghunter as it exits and she steps to one side as neferox takes a bite, the shattering of an arrow which hits the floor near nefs head goes mostly unnoticed by the demon hound as she shoved the hunter prone expecting it to wriggle, but the second arrow from Griff has already found a place in the egghunters head. The readied attacks all happen at once giving no opportunity for the hunter itself to deploy it's own attack. Ned spits out the disgusting creature and turns to vin with some pride.
The injured Roc rests it's head on the floor exhausted, as it's mate croons over it. Hector stammers and gestures around wondering if it is over.
Everyone is up, Gewyn senses no more creatures within the Roc's chest.
Sam find the problem solved before he even has a chance to react. Good enough then, he supposes... But he does worry about there being more inside the poor beast. Or eggs. Or larvae or whatever they spring from. It's all kind of gross to him and he hated it as there is nothing he can do about it. Is there?
Tilting his head to one side, he wonders. He wonders silently aloud... Silent to the others, but aloud in his head. "Molls? I'm at a loss here. Not sure what to do," he thinks inside of his head talking to the spirit or ghost or memory of his deceased wife. "Not sure there's anything I can do... There anything you can do?" Truth is, he has only the vaguest sense that she is even present, understanding what she can and cannot do is definitely beyond him.
((Sam, unconscious of doing so and totally unintentionally, casts Unseen Servant as an action and as a Bonus Action instructs the presence of Molly to extract any implanted eggs or babies or anything from inside the Roc... I the Player have no idea if this would work or not and Sam the Character barely even knows he is doing it so has no real expectations... But the Unseen Servant is shapeless so the concept of it being able to follow any holes left from burrowing eggworms isn't totally unreasonable... *shrug* Besides this Hail Mary, I gots nothing.))
Gewyn slowly and calmly reapproaches the exhausted roc, still humming his song. He places a hand on its leg and cocks his head. "I hear no more."He looks over at the nest, littered not with eggs but with corpses. "Muir, I know not if you are able, but, I would like my sorrow to be conveyed."
Then he steps away and finds a large rock to sit upon. He slings his cittern over his shoulder and brings out his birdpipes once more. Then he plays a new song. Mourning Softly in the Wake of Hardship.
Unsure of what to do, Elthana looks to Muir, “Any way of knowing if the Roc has been infested with eggs or something?” She keeps up her sanctuary for the moment.
Vin smiles down at Neferox and gives her a quick salute as he descends on his broom, noticing her look of pride.
"If the immediate danger has passed, perhaps we should carry on our journey to the Good Witch and check in on the Rocs on our way back? Perhaps the Good Witch has some remedy even, that could help ensure there are no eggs within the Roc", he suggests, unsure how much more they can do right now.
"I mean, even if there are eggs, it will take time for them to hatch, right? We have time".
"One moment...I will see what I can do" Muir squawks at the birds conveying everyone's messages and tells them what he is going to do. He moves toward the roc stamps the staff down where it begins to glow a greenish hue from the top. "I will try to locate any life forms within either in an egg or not"
In short answer to vin, Griff lands on the floor, "I am not sure how long the incubation times are being, I have heard stories but these things are being the stiff of my kinds nightmares, we have not been capturing them to study their ways".
To the other comment hector excitedly nods, having apparently calmed now that the worst of the surprises seems to be over, "if there are eggs in there then the good witch will most definitely be able to remove them, somehow, probably.. she's really good at that kind of stuff. I really should visit more often, it's been years."
As Muir's staff touches the ground, eyes are on him to deliver news of what he is able to determine.
Muir turns to the group "There are no eggs within the roc but our path forward there are many. I am going to heal the male and let him rest. Thank you for humoring and helping me. I appreciate it but I promise to next time be more careful."
Healing word 11+9 from Chalice= 20 HPs back to the Roc.
"We'll have to destroy what we can for our own safety but I don't think we can promise to get them all," Sam says in response to Muir, having a bit of a shiver due to the nightmare egg scenario he sees ahead of them. "You may want to suggest they find a new nest and try to expand their family again..."
Vin frowns not in irritation but rather confusion, "Many covers a lot of possibilities. Are we talking dozens, hundreds or thousands here? Is the way completely blocked?".
He then looks to the healthy Roc. "Perhaps you could persuade our friend here to give us a lift, Muir. I expect we'll be there and back before its mate even notices, right? I am not suggesting it waits for us mind, I don't know how long we will be with the Good Witch, which means we still have to get passed the egg hunters on the way back, but at least we'll have a view from above as to the scale of the issue".
Muir smiles “Let me clarify. There are no eggs within the roc or this cave. Eggs of any kind. There are many many eggs on our way. They could be bird eggs, lizard eggs, or any other creature who lays eggs. She wants to stay with her mate. However, we should stop here in the way back and check in. They may be willing to aid us when they are physically ready”
