Vin watches carefully, wondering how much there really is to say to ask for a lift and answer, but when the female roc lowers her head he assumed it was all fine.
"Looks like they accepted", he says with a smile to Muir. "Should we move back out the tunnel?".
Muir turns and smiles at the group "They will provide a ride but also help us in the fight against Nivara. Be kind to them, they have lost much. They will accompany us on our way to our next destination and help us as much as they can. If all goes well they will accompany us home, if possible, through the portal, but we will see. Is there anything you wish me to ask of them?"
"Did none of their eggs survive?" Sam asks. He hadn't checked last time but he guesses he had a vague hope... "Gewyn, you're master of rebirth now, or something... Anything you can do?"
Muir takes a moment and answers the questions "None of their eggs survived. They have nothing here but sadness. They promised to help because we did them a great service by saving their lives and also healing her mate. I have become friends with them and they trust me. They are going to help me and in turn help all of us because you are my friends and aided them as well."
"And bringing them back home... Would that be wise?" Sam asks. "Would they stay housed and tended like horses or roam free? Could these creatures not be... problematic... to the citizenry and their cattle?"
"I would take care to see that they are safe and understand where they can hunt. However, perhaps the Djinn could use their help here...It is still to be determined."
Elthana feels this strange feeling of excitement bubble up from within her, these Rocs are going to stay with them and help? These immense beasts that will not only let us ride them, but will fight by our sides? She thinks back to the chimera's they fought earlier and how much easier that fight would have been with the two of these at their sides.
She hesitantly walks up to the female and gently touches one of her legs, the whole absurdity of it slowly sinking in.
"Sounds good to me", Vin says regarding the rocs helping them and following them back through the portal. "I think Muir is right, as long as he understands their nature and can find suitable food for them and a place to live. Although they do eat an awful lot". He looks to sky whale child as he mentions the amount they eat. He has always been one for seeing the best in creatures and people alike, and this is no different.
"I mean, if they want to get away from here, they will make powerful allies wherever we are, right? And we can look after them in return. I mean, Muir can. But I can help too".
"Like you are looking after the Mimic you abandoned in your room, have no idea how big is and which my decide to snack on any of us if we step to close?" Sam asks. "I mean seriously, what kind of training did you give it to stop it from eating Edda and Adda as they clean your room? Any? Did you at least tell the kobolds NOT to clean your room?"
"I'm all for having allies in the war against the undead minions and all," Sam assured. "I'm just saying we can't haphazardly bring every stray and castoff back home with us... The neighbors will start to talk!"
Vin looks at Sam as he gives him a dressing down, struggling to remember how he left things with Edda, Adda and the mimic. He knows he would absolutely have worked things out with them, but doesn’t remember specifically what they discussed.
The frustration of not remembering alongside what happened earlier with Sam pushing his buttons about Neferox result in him simply responding, “Whatever”, in classic teenager style. He then turns to Muir, “I’ve got your back, Muir”.
The female Roc looks down at Elthana's touch, it leans over and gazes at her with one eye, apparently accepting this familiarity, so close she could pet it's head if she wanted, the size difference is notable apparent this close, it's beak longer than Elthana's arm, it's head longer than her head to her waist.
As Muir continues speaking he informs the group that each roc should be able to manage three of them, if Sam and Muir head a roc each as the heaviest members. Hootie and spyro are considerably smaller and their weight shouldn't matter too much but it does leave neferox and vin, or Griff having to fly beside the gargantuan Roc's.
(I'll let you flavour this how you wish but it shouldn't matter much for this leg of the journey)
Leaving the broken nest and shattered shells behind you the Rocs follow you out of the tunnels and allow the group to board, The flight towards the mount where the small council of the shattered isle reside, is not too long, but it is bitterly cold as the winds of the vast fly by you, reminding you all of the fact that these lands you have been walking upon are, and have always been, perpetually falling into the great beyond at considerable speeds.
As you get closer to communities and more lived in areas of the shattered isle, you begin to her screaming below as folk see the underside of two massive Rocs above and they begin to scramble into their homes to hide.
Clamping his legs hard around the back of the roc, Gewyn pulls out his cittern and begins playing a common song of tavern revel as loudly as he can. "Be not alarmed!" he calls down to the people they pass by, hoping he can be heard. "No harm is to befall you this day"
"Who you calling heavy?" Sam counters quickly, half pretending to be offended. Half not. He does have a bit of a dad-bod thing happening and he's none too thrilled to have it pointed out.
Sam thinks it is a bit of a shame that the Rocs bring up the rear. It has occurred to him that Hog may have some magical ingredient uses for Roc egg shells or such but he's not even going to entertain the idea of asking their permission to scoop some up and send it to the enchanter. Ah well, like as not they're too long dead to have been useful anyway...
Once the flying is underway Sam decides he prefers more solid modes of transport - flat boards he can put his feet upon, less clutching and hanging on to feathers for dear life. Still, beggars can't exactly be choosers and he clutches as close to the big bird as possible to try to cut down on the winds and share it's warmth... As he notices villagers below being scared and fleeing he tries calling over to Muir to tell him to tell the birds to fly higher but he's pretty sure the winds are making cross bird communication near impossible.
Vin and Neferox happily travel separately from those on the rocs, appreciating the space and the freedom. Obviously their travel speed suffers but it was still far quicker than having to travel by foot.
When they folks on the ground start screaming at the sight of the rocs, Vin notices Muir motioning towards him.
He whispers so only Muir hears, "What are you trying to say? You want me to go ahead? But I have no idea where I am going".
Gewyn's song is surely entertaining for those on the back of the roc with him, though the battering of the wind prevents anyone else from properly hearing. Sam instinctively pulls up a little as he tries to get Muir's attention, and to his surprise the roc gives a powerful flap and ascends about 30ft over the second roc. Turning it's head to eye Sam as if to ask if this is better?.
After a out an hour of seeing people below rushing for cover the mount comes into view, and despite his anxieties Vin does recognise the home where he remembers seeing Kohso, Serafina, and Ömertyr. Dashing ahead on his broom with neferox by his side the other two are able to get the Rocs to slow, giving vin time to warn of their arrival.
Vin does as requested once he sees the way, riding his broom alongside Neferox so it doesn't look like she is chasing him.
"We are guests of the council, Ömertyr is awaiting our arrival. The rocs are friendly, do not be afraid", he calls out to the closest person he sees, and then repeats for anyone else who can hear him as he gets closer.
"Send for Kohso, Serafina, or Ömertyr. They will vouch for us", he says if he is able to land without incident.
The few dragonborn guards in the town do come rushing toward vin and nef weapons drawn. Amongst them vin recognises two who were escorting hector a while ago, Eaos and Kudd. The two looks confused and speak to their comrades in draconic, one unfamiliar guard replies back and seems to translate for vin, Kudd and Eaos nod and start barking orders. The unfamiliar dragonborn steps forward and speaks to vin in common, "you have been awaited, though we expected you all by foot. We will prepare a landing place behind the mount, but we have no way to tether these beasts or care for them, they are wild, the fact that your group is using them for travel is frankly unheard of. But we'll do our best, I've sent someone to fetch Ömertyr."
From above the two mounted groups see the dragonborns directing you all to a ruinous out cropping of old buildings, a square which has been cleared of buildings apparently from the shattering so long ago. It is spacious but rocky, a ten minute walk away from your actual destination.
Vin watches a little nervously as it seems they don't understand him, although they should recognise him. He almost reaches into his pack for his last potion of tongues but thankfully the Dragonborn who he hasn't met before begins to translate.
"Thank you. I am Vin and this is Neferox", he says motioning to Neferox who was not so much nervous as anxious and coiled. She does however relax when Vin starts communicating with the Dragonborn who speaks common.
"We were on foot, but had a change of plan when we came across the rocs and befriended them. I am sure Muir will explain to them what is happening and what is expected of them. Tell your people to keep their distance though, I doubt their trust will extend beyond those in our group. That is probably redundant mind, telling them to keep away from the gigantic monster birds of doom", he adds chuckling.
Vin watches carefully, wondering how much there really is to say to ask for a lift and answer, but when the female roc lowers her head he assumed it was all fine.
"Looks like they accepted", he says with a smile to Muir. "Should we move back out the tunnel?".
