Muir nods along to the things he knew and assumed about Vin but at the slow realization that Ned is his mother the demon lord herself he falls out of his chair. “Sorry, I was not prepared for that nugget of information. I had known the story yes and assumed some other things but not that Nef…errr….Roxs’hian was here…I assumed her dead along with your father….Well now the gates closing makes sense as well. It wasn’t Nivarra but it’s what kept her here in place…..the gates closing 1000 years ago matches Nivarra being here….Remind me of the prophecy please if you would?”
Vin surpasses a chuckle at Muir falling off his chair, and replies about the prophecy.
"I only know that I am believed to be the destruction of all, an Anti-God", he says, and looks to Neferox and Morris. "Morris, do you have access to the memories of some who has passed and knew more? I would love to know the actual wording. I have asked Neferox if she knows too".
Seeing Vin able to chuckle, Gewyn's worry abates. "Seems you've the opposite problem from me. Your mother is TOO involved."
Gewyn squats down on his haunches and looks at Nef searchingly. "Suppose your curse were broken. What would you do."He speaks quietly, almost to himself, not expecting an answer directly from the dog.
Morris looks surprised to be questioned at this point. "Um... I... Uhhh. I'm sorry, prophecies and the like aren't things that mortals are normally involved in. That's celestial and infernal territory, this is the first time in hearing of it, I don't collect memories of the demonic or angelic. If you could find your way to the Weavers then they'd be able to tell you. But that would come at a price, and I think you guys have better things to do than to anger the fates."
Neferox looks into Gewyn's eyes and gives a short "Ruff!" Before turning to vin to translate.
Muir raises an eye brow unsure of that response. "Pardon me you are a god yourself no....a part of the celestial realm although your direct duty is that of those who have passed on. It is no different than the God Hermes who is of that realm but meddles in the affairs of mortals same as you. Gods do not just do things out of the kindness of their hearts...you have helped us here because it benefits you. We defeat Nivara and strengthen the Raven Queen's grasp here and help weaken further Nectyran's grasp. So come now.....you know the prophecy even if through the mortal lens.....Vin here is no mere mortal, clearly, but you swooped in when he died no and if not for my resurrection spell, would have collected him whole....So please you can tell us the prophecy unless of course by fulfilling this prophecy you too would perish being a Celestial, which is why you tried to scoop him up....Hmmmm"
Morris cocks his head to the side confused and then stutters as if spitting feathers before frustratedly stating "yes... Well... Hermes is quite the hypocrite if he's been meddling in mortal affairs, especially after he killed his brother for doing the same! There is a line, a boundary of which I try not to cross. You are right, and I've crossed that boundary with your group specifically because it benefits me and my kin. But this? A prophecy involving infernal and celestial forces together... That's beyond the pail even for me. I can't. And anyway prophecies have a tendancy to become more inevitable the more you try to avoid them, you push it and it will push back. Do you want Vin to become an anti-god? I can tell you for a fact that this boy is currently mortal...
I really don't want to have to cross another boundary in centuries to come, to help another group of mortals from stopping his ascension!"
Muir who at this point had taken out his journal and began writing simply peers over the top of the book at Morris once he finishes "Interesting points there Morris....Perhaps you can indulge me on several of them.
1. My history into the realms of celestial murders are a bit weak....perhaps you could tell me this story of Hermes killing his brother for meddling? Is this a common practice between Gods? Killing each other for meddling? I'd have to assume there'd be a lot less gods.......
2. You have crossed this boundary when it benefitted you, which we appreciate, but did you not cross this boundary again by helping Vin figure out his lineage?
3. You say Vin is mortal....He has technically died twice....once by the bullies and once in this realm but brought back to life both times. How could he be mortal born to THE Demon Lord of her time and a Celestial being?
and lastly
4. This prophecy has Vin ascend to a throne and become an AntiGod.....Does this mean he would wipe the world of you all or that some of you will have to bow to him to spare yourselves? How does something like that work exactly?
Vin smiles at Gewyn's joke, thankful for his friend's attempt to lighten the mood.
"She wants you to know that if the curse is broken it would change nothing. She would stay with us and protect me until the end of her days", he says by way of translation.
When Muir starts to really press Morris, he moves across to him.
"Muir, just listen a moment. Morris may have his own agenda, but he has done me a great favour today. What happened was not by his design, it was Neferox who asked me to make the request of Morris. I do not believe it was something he orchestrated, nor did he know what I have shared beforehand. I want to know about the prophecy more than anyone, but if Morris says he can't help, I respect that. And if he says I am mortal, I believe him", he says seriously.
"In a way, it is actually a relief that the prophecy is not that widely known. The more widespread it is, the more danger I am in. And let's not forget this is not the only problem we have right now. I am not telling you not to ask your questions, just to respect the answers, please".
As Morris' brow furrows in frustration at Muir's questions, he is about to open his mouth and answer something but As vin interrupts his frustration is somewhat abated... "thank you Vin. I appreciate that, but to clarify for Muir and the group, it might be useful to know,
Vin has died only once, and like many people who are under the care of those with the same magics that you have access to, Muir, he was revivified, this does not make him immortal, no more than if you had used the same spell on Elthana, Gewyn, or Sam... Perhaps I was too hasty to take his memories, perhaps the reason was my own worry. His existence is a threat to the state of the World, the Realms and all of the Gods. The other time he died, the one Vin and I were shown in Rox's memories, that time was undone with Chronomancy, it literally never happened from the perception of anyone else but Neferox..."
When Morris speaks, Vin looks as though he has been shot with a ray of frost. His face goes pale and his jaw drops open.
"My existence is a threat to the state of the World, the Realms and all of the Gods", he repeats quietly. "And you thought that when I died and you started to take my memories? I don't understand, you said you didn't know of the prophecy, why would you think that back then?".
He backs towards a chair and sits down, the wind taken from him and unable to say more.
Elthana quietly watches all of it unfold. She feels for Vin, she knows what it is like to be under the microscope and to have your past and possibly present laid out to you so very different than what you had originally believed your entire life. Knew it so very well.
She stays silent as the others talk, but she watches Vin closely, not wanting him to be too overwhelmed and watching for ticks to see how he is handling it. She knows Muir will push until he's satisfied, no matter the cost, and she wasn't going to let Vin pay it. As the boy gets up to sit next to Muir, she stays where she is, watching him. She smiles slightly thinking she must look a lot like Nef... well his mother apparently, as she watches him like a hawk.
At the last statement, she does look to Morris to see his response to the declaration.
