"I... I'm still responsible for her though. So... its on me. I'm trying my best to help her but... I'm just not smart enough. Heck, I'm only 18! What the heck do I know about helping a dog that... It's so hard because she only sees the worst in people. She mentioned to me she believed that Old Thicket's children were attacking the refugees for days. That they were not giving us answers to what we needed to know... I wanted to believe in them, that they want to help and... I don't know. Maybe I should of asked the questions better to help her feel less afraid of them... She really believed that Old Thicket was tricking us. When the tree insulted her... well... thank you Elthana. That was really brave... I just froze up for a moment... scared thinking about what was about to happen.... If not for your quick thinking.... I thought I was going to fail her again and something bad was going to happen." Vin seems really depressed and they hesitate about asking something but do eventually say "Nef wants me to leave with her... says its too dangerous here... I don't want to go. I want to help... but... I would understand if you wanted us to leave. I'll probably get around to asking everyone at some point... if you all want us to..." He leaves it unspoken but he seems to think they might not be wanted anymore and that if its so, he will leave with no trouble. He seems devastated at the mere thought of this to the point he couldn't even bring himself to say it.
Elthana listens quietly while the half-elf explains what is going on in their eyes. As Vin thanks her for breaking up the possible fight, she nods to him. When he seems finished, she looks at him for a long time. Enough to make the poor kid start to feel awkward before she finally speaks.
"You don't want to leave? Then don't." She looks to him to make sure he hears her, then continues, "What are you talking about, not smart enough? From what I have seen, you carry yourself well. With other folk and on the battlefield. I have no concern about you. But don't go whining about the fact you are only 18. You don't want to know the things I was doing when I was the equivalent to 18 years old. You need to handle that dog of yours though, you talk about her wanting to protect you and all she does is put the rest of us in danger. Next time she threatens me like that, I'm not letting it go."
She pauses, looks like she is ready to leave, but changes her mind, "As for what Neferox is telling you, the worst in people you say? Try discussing it with the rest of us, might help us make better informed decisions. If you feel she knows more than we do, why are you holding it from us? Can't work very well as a unit if information is held back."
Properly scolded Vin seems to take it to heart. "Right. Just do better. I can do that. I'll try to let you all know what she's saying... it's not like I'm hiding it but she's often telling me right then and there. Pointing out why someone is suspicious and often with good reason. Like with you. When she first met you she noticed your gear, your outfit and demeanor. Like how you instinctually move more quiet then others. Nef thought you were an assassin when we first met. She often jumps to how or why people could or might kill me. Really... I'm glad you all stick with us. Most folks run away in fear from her as she gets between me and threats until she believes they are not a threat anymore. She warms up eventually... but it's harder meeting all these enew folks when we are not even sure who the enemy is and they shape change."
Gewyn's eyes snap over to Muir's. A hundred thoughts flash subtly over his face as his breathing gets deep. Fight or flight. With effort, he calms himself.
"So you know about the mirror..." He pauses and thinks for another second, his hand going to his chin (bringing it notably close to his pipes). "... But did not say anything to the others about it, being the newcomer to the group. Okay, if you're willing to keep the bit about the mirror between us, I'd be happy to tell you what I saw. I'm just figuring out some personal stuff that I don't want to go loud with, but you don't have to worry about me. Our mission is my highest priority."
He points to the ground in front of Muir. "I saw a spirit. A gnome. Female. Light hair. And a druid by her garb. She just wanted to witness you briefly. She seemed... very proud. I'll be honest, I didn't know if I could trust you at first, what with the secrets you are keeping as well, but if half of what this lady said is true, then I can trust at least that your intentions are pure. So I'll let you have your secrets, if you'll let me have mine. Savvy?"
I have suspected as much about the mirror as you seem to look into it quite often and you don't seem vain that you are concerned about your looks in the middle of a dead forest. I also speak Sylvan and heard what Shionne said to you about being fey and of another realm or at least your ancestors. Her translator whose name has slipped me did not mention that part out loud. So you see I put these things together and indeed have kept quiet. Your secrets are your own and I have no reason to tell them. As for the spirit you saw it sounds like you have described Master Thunberg. She was slain by the evil fey protecting those escaping from Hokum. She was very practical and the one of the best of the Keepers. Always tried to negotiate without a fight.... I am glad she is here with us. I am glad you have confided this to me. I promise again your secrets are your own. If you need advice or information, please do not hesitate to ask. We druids know of the fey through long forgotten stories and books.
Gewyn turns his back on Muir, hands on his hips. Then he rubs his eyes with the back of his hand and takes a few deep breaths. "Wow, okay... sorry I just..." He looks up to the sky and blinks hard a couple of times before turning around to face Muir again, his eyes wet and rimmed with red. "I'm just dealing with a lot of stress right now, and on top of that I found out about my ancestry the same time you did, and I don't know what it means for my future and my life, and I didn't think I could ever be safe if someone else knew, and so just... yeah. Thanks"
He finishes rambling, sniffs and clears his throat, and then composes himself.
Muir smiles again and pats Gewyn on the shoulder "Just know I am here to help if you need it" Muir walks away and sits on a tree stump awaiting everyone else to return to the fold. He sits meditating and thinking about Master Thunberg hoping to feel her presence.
...But it does not come, with the party mostly interacting amongst themselves and a decision made as to Old Thicket not proceeding with tree production, the massive tree inhales a sharp breath, "well, I best be off then, I'll go check on the young ones eh? You might want to brace yourselves, or step back a bit." With that the near 100ft tall tree begins wiggling and pulling his roots out of the ground, the ground itself shifts and twists under everyone's feet, throughout the whole blighted area and beyond, each member of the group is knocked off balance momentarily before regaining their footing in a now slightly shallower blight field. With the addition of his roots lifting him from the ground Old thicket becomes even taller, impossible to properly see where he ends from such a close position but his canopy reaches far higher than the natural forest, he glides away on his long roots as the slash around like a viscous octopus.
At the movement of the massive tree, Neferox again gives an audible growl, but this time no flames lick past her teeth and she glances momentarily at Sam before quieting down and returning to Vin.
Elthana listens to Vin's response and as he says Nef called her an assassin, she responds, "I've been called worse", and then waits for him to finish. "The hound does warm up eventually? That actually surprises me. And her insight might help us, you say you don't hide what she says, I'd contradict that and say the only times you have said what she is thinking is when we directly ask you. I'm asking you to offer it up. We're sticking with you Vin, just get that dog of yours to be on the same team."
With that, she gets up, nods to the boy, and walks back to Muir, Sam and Gewyn.
Vin seems to listen intently. A desire to do better. How this kind half-elf ever stayed this kind and innocent with what Elthana knows about them is anyone's guess. Let alone what a hound like Neferox is doing with them. They reply to Elthana "Alright, I'll try to report more frequently what she's saying, I assume you don't want me to say them in front of the people she's telling me about... most people get really angry when I ask directly stuff like that. I learned to phrase things to more subtly ask but be polite. As for keeping Nef in check... I'll try. You, Sam, Gewyn... you three have stuck with us longer then anyone else before. She's... already acting different. Sometimes confused, although she tries to hide it. It's a good thing I think. She's seeing not everyone is out for themselves. I'll also keep trying and do better of keeping her out of trouble."
Vin watches her walk off. Eventually Nef makes their way over to Vin and the boy seems to be petting them, both of them seem deep in thought.
"Perhaps we should go alone," Sam suggests once the party is back together after their separate little discussions. "Send all the trees and refugees to the cave and then scout out Hokum ourselves..."
Sam holds up a hand to any complaints or counter suggestions so he can finish his point. "I'm not saying we take on these Red Cap things by ourselves. I'm not saying we don't. Thing is we don't know how many there are, if they are organized or not, or anything really..." Sam continues on, doing his best to sounds reasonable. "We could go and see and then decide. In the meantime we'll know the refugees are as secure as can be..."
Assuming this little discussion is happening outside the presence of the King or Awakened Trees, Sam adds that he still doesn't fully trust the trees nor Shionne. "It'll be interesting to see how she reacts to this deal, and maybe we should mention her to Old Thickhead too, gauge his reaction? But if they do indeed get along and are true, the more protecting the innocent the better, no?"
"And as for being true... Wasn't always one of the myths about these faerie things that they have to hold to their word? Do we have a solid promise from either that they mean no harm?"
Muir nods his head in agreement and wonders aloud “I thought I had mentioned Shionne to the old tree. Perhaps I didn’t? So much was said it’s hard to keep my thoughts arranged in an orderly method. Sam’s suggestion is reasonable.”
With that, both neferox and Órga perk up, looking south, slowly and surely the sound of slow arduous movement can be heard faintly in the distance, gradually growing louder as whatever it is moves closer.
With a little investigation and some preparations to fight, calmed. The group begin to recognise the incoming noise as the survivors, moving close by the blighted area, on their way to the now guarded cave.
Approaching them isn't an issue, though Iver and another guard also prepare to fight before they can see that it is the party approaching and not some odd creature, "ah thank the gods it's you guys, you were successful in your venture I'm guessing? We ran into a little trouble, couple of them moving trees" he quiets down as to not be overheard by the surviving masses, "the first one went down easy, some shadow creature helped us, scared the living daylights out of me, made the second one was tougher, though it stopped fighting halfway through and tried to escape, that gave us enough chance to cut it down, just to be sure."
Gore and Goldsheaf can be seen heading the group, they look to the group but decidedly keep their heading, not wanting to lose time. The look on Gore's face is as guilt ridden as one can display upon his Lizardfolk maw, he looks to the blighted trees with sorrow, at what has become of the forest he swore to protect. Shionne can be seen every so often glowing gold, stepping between trees within her sight range, but ther and Terry at this point also look exhausted, their eyes slightly sunken, Shionne's posture particularly lacks it's authoritative straight back that lends itself to her elegance.
Sam hails the group and heads over with Molly and Órga on either side of him and a step behind. "Success is a relative term, is it not?" he answers Iver. "Hopefully we have but... We need to talk." Sam appreciates the idea of not stopping but he suggests we do need a gathering of the decision makers and those who can spread word around the rest once everything is decided.
"One of the others can explain. They're better with the words and all..." Sam says with a bit of a smirk on his face. "But we hope the trees are your allies now, at least for now. If it's an agreement you all like... Where is Shionne? Oh! There she is... She should be part of this so we can get her take."
Muir steps up and places a hand on Gore's shoulder while speaking to the others "The trees are temporary allies. They will help you protect yourselves once you are in the caves. You won't notice them unless they move which in that case don't attack them. They are there to help protect you. We have made an arrangement with the fey who created them. Perhaps Shionne knows of the tree? Old Thicket I believe it said it's name was. You spoke of a spirit helping you....What did it look like"
Master Gore nods thoughtfully at Muir as the decision makers carve a path a little further ahead of the main body of survivors as to be unheard. "Trees have always been our allies, so I'm glad you could broker some peace with these new creatures, very well done Muir." Gore rasps. In response to the last question Iver interjects, "I think it was the same kind of thing Vin summoned in camp, like a shade, but it helped out so... Even with a scare, no harm no foul, it kept itself unseen by the survivors thankfully, I don't think we could have coped with a panic."
At this point Shionne slinks out of a nearby tree, her glow somewhat dulled, she looks like she is lacking her usual energy as she glides over.
Elthana watches Shionne, a bit confused in the change of her demeanor. "Shionne, from what I understand, there is a portal in the cave system we are heading to, I know it isn't the one you came from, but I understand it to also be connected to the feywild as Old Thicket came through." She looks to Sam recalling his suspicions, "Speaking of Old Thicket, do you know of them? But if we are moving towards a portal connected to your plane, won't that help you?"
She looks around at the refugees after talking with Shionne, making sure they can all finish the journey ahead of them.
Shionne gives Elthana a weary smile, and begins to speak, "there is and always has been just one portal to the Faewyld on this plane, it may connect to the tunnels but we are getting a little further away than the camp was, plus this travelling is not helping, I should be fine once we stop and I can rest up a little. I am not familiar with this Old Thicket you speak of, but I'm pleased to know we have allies that happened to find their way through. Who or what is Old Thicket?" Terry's voice echoes Shionnes in translation from just behind the group. Though he looks worried.
"It's a tree. Like the walking ones... But bigger. Older. More intelligent," Sam chimes in. "It made the other trees. Killed big chunk of forest to do so. Sapped it's energy and turned trees to dust... Doesn't actually seem tree friendly to me but he said he found non walking trees boring. He seemed to indicate he was from faerie but also not in good with anyone else? I think he may have mentioned the outcasts and such were sent his way or something?" Sam looks around to the others to see if their recollections are better than his own.
