Without moving, he says, "Sorry, didn't even see you there, Sam. We'll be done talking soon, I'm sure." To Elthana, he says, "I heard a lot of interesting stories. You could say that getting people in a talkative mood is one of my specialties. They had stories about sea monsters, labor strikes, trade embargos, bandits, you name it. No two stories were the same, and nothing stood out as particularly reliable. So far as I can gather, no one here has a clue what is actually going on. But that in and of itself is useful. There seems to be a complete information blackout, which to me rules out many lighter explanations. I think we are headed into trouble..." He trails off, as if his thoughts had just become occupied with something else. "Well, either way, we should get some sleep." He lies back down in his original position, face covered again.
As Gewyn lays down and extinguishes the candles, Sam is already asleep and beginning to snore, Elthana finds herself somewhat alone in the dark sitting on her bed, her stealth training kicks in and makes her glance toward the window trying to spot any light in the sky, and be aware of other light sources, her verdict?... the morning would be here soon.
Ebb returns to the Inn a short while later and finds he has a room all to himself, apparently everyone else having found their own accommodation. The Bar is closed and the lights out, the entire place takes an eerie silence in the empty darkness, his footsteps feel loud under his feet and when he gets to the room door he stops, takes a beat, listening to the silence. Before inevitably closing his door and turning in for the night, at least the morning would be here soon.
Outside the horses shuffle and snort in their sleep, the stables to the back of the Inn look well stocked and comfortable for the beasts of burden within. Vin sits on the roof of the Carriage having relieved Gara of the last bit of his, probably unnecessary, guard watch. The sun slowly begins to lighten the sky, subduing the stars that burn over head, Nef looks directly upwards and breathes a mist through the cold air, the ground becomes slick with dew, the morning would be here, very soon.
Vin and Nef both yawn in unison as the sun finally rises on the horizon. It was a very quiet night and Vin used it to think on a lot of things. He pats Nef's head and says "Start of the day. I'm going to go wake Gara and Walker like he asked. He said to get them up at first light." Nef looks around the carriage and seems to sigh as they lay their head back down. "Yeah, probably could of slept through the night. Totally wasn't needed for them to keep watch. At least they will be well rested for the trip. I'm just hopeful to get some rest on the trip." Witht hat Vin jumps down as Nef follows in his wake as always. He makes his way to wake up gara and Walker. The crisp morning air a bit cold on him he breathes some warmth onto his hands causing mist to form about his hands. He smiles at seeing his breath in the cold air but just moves on to wake the two guards.
Knocking to awake he waits for an answer and once he gets one says "First light. As you requested. Was really "yawn" quiet. You two need anything? Otherwise I'm going to take a small walk this morning with Nef before we get going. Just kind of amble around the town but not far, I won't be long. I'll probably see if anyone else is an early morning person and see if they want to join me." with a reply from the guards received he would then go to quietly see if anyone else was up and would offer for them to join him on a morning walk before the guards finishes prepping for departure this morning. Vin was aiming to just do a circle around the area now the circus has concluded and see what the town looks like during the day.
Sam is awake for a while before he actually stirs and gets up. Too used to having to ge at work and started before most others even awake for him to be able to sleep on even when he gets a fair chance. So he lies awake a while hoping more sleep will come, but of course it does not.
Rising, Sam quietly grabs his gear and leaves the room with nary a glance to the others. If they’re up and about already he’ll see them soon enough. If they’re still sleeping he aims not to disrupt that. Do he figuratively tiptoes out the door to find a morning wake me up and some food, keeping an eye out for any of the others.
He sits at a table alone, at least at first, and awaits his order to be brought to him. In the meanwhile he uses his smith’s tools to carefully freshen up the runes he has carved into his armor. When the server does come by Sam asks if they’ve seen they boy and their animal. “The boy is kind of unremarkable,” Sam admits while describing him, “but there’d be no mistaking his beast. And the two’re inseparable…” The test will show up soon enough and Sam really isn’t worried about the boy… but it has been a while since he’s heard or seen the kid so only proper he ask after him…
Almost as if by fate Vin walks into the dining area checking to see if anyone is awake. It becomes obvious they spot Sam as they wave in a friendly manner towards him. The young man and black hound walk over to him as he works on his armor. As Vin approaches he says "Morning Sam. Oh, right breakfast. I'm starving!" Vin sits opposite of Sam with all the armor work he is doing. Nef takes a place laying on the floor next to Vin and just stares ominously at the severs as they go by. The hounds seeming to find some kind of enjoyment of the severs being nervous and scared of her. Vin seems completely unaware as he says to Sam "That's a really cool design you put on your armor. Did you make the armor too?" The boy seems genuinely interested but also hungry as they look around for a sever to take his order. Nef looks up and sighs as they give a small bark of attention causing many people to look in Vin's direction. He shifts awkwardly and a bit embarrassed but waves down a sever to order breakfast as well. Then he focuses back on Sam, "After eating, Nef and I were going to go for a walk around town while Gara and Walker prepare the carriage. Did you want to join?"
As Elthana sees that dawn is approaching and quietly gets up and leaves the room. As the day starts, she heads down to the kitchen and grabs a quick bite as she heads out the door of the Inn. As she is greeted by the chilly air, she heads out to the outskirts of the town, not near the carriage, and starts going through her typical morning routine. Some meditation, but mainly using her pole to to warm up her body going through her exercises.
Once completed she heads back towards the festival grounds, getting a feel for the area and eventually heads back to the carriage to see who all might be out and about.
As Vin wakes Gara he musters a thumbs up and starts getting ready, at the mention of Vin's walk Gara pipes up, "I asked about supplies and rations last night, apparently there's a wizard somewhere who has been buying up a good chunk of the town's food and selling it back to them, god's only knows why, but he's likely our best shot at replacing all our lost rations, ask about and see if you can find him would ya?" With that he gives a yawn and shoves Walker awake too.
At the bar Sam, Vin and Elthana are given plates and directed toward a table which has been set up between the bar and the stairs. A breakfast buffet is laid out and servers come back and forth from the kitchen to fill up on the dishes which are becoming empty; sausage, fish, eggs, potatoes, tomatoes, and mushrooms, everything seems to be fried, not a bad start to the day. Trina the Minotaur bartender stands and gets the drinks, watching over the buffet to make sure no one takes advantage, she seems tired, likely her staff were at the festival last night too.
Elthana on her venture out of the town realises in the stark light of the morning, how small the town actually is, there must only be around a 150 houses of varying sizes and builds. It seems that the Inn may be the oldest building in the town, the base structure of which seems to have been a military-esque outpost that has been modified and extended. The Carnival ground is deserted, the tents all zipped up, the stages packed away, and the performers likely still asleep. Although she does spot one squat man standing at the ready outside of a small familiar tent. Her morning exercise and meditation fly by without issue.
"No, no. I'm just a working schmug. I couldn't afford the materials to even start making something like this," Sam says with some regret as he pauses and lightly runs his hand over the fine Mithral Splint. "Even if I did have the talent..."
"No, Vin. This armor is the armor of The Tangles. Probably the most expensive thing that belongs to anyone in there. But really, it belongs to nobody. To everyone who lives there. It's community goods, pledged to protect the people of The Tangles and their interests. I only have it on loan... And just hope I can put it to use for those it belongs to," Sam explains with a bit of reverence in his voice. He was truly in awe of this armor, humbled that he had even a minor hand in it's crafting, and all but petrified that he'll not live up the honor of wearing it.
"But what of you lad? And your friend? I lost track of the two of you last night," Sam says, changing the topic. "Didn't get into too much trouble, did yas? Find some fun in the festivities?"
---
((If/when Sam is relayed the information about the wizard buying food and then selling it back he'll get quite suspicious and ask what else we know about that? Is he selling it back at a profit? Are the people still selling to him? Can we find out when the next purchase is happening?))
Vin smiles and looks over at the buffet. Sam was polite and answered his question and asked his own though and Vin was a polite young man. "Oh, I did the knife throwing competition and won but I think the guy let me win. It felt good at first until I had time to think on it. After that we went to see the fortune teller. It was a bit odd but not really sure what to think of it. Then I kind of went to find you all. I saw Elthana easily complete those balance pole things while Gewyn was being the center of attention. He seems really good with people. I kind of went over to help out Gara and Walker after that. It just didn't seem right to let them do all the guarding while we had fun so I picked them up some circus food and offered to take their last watch and let them rest before they drive us all today." Vin gives a big yawn and tries to stifle it but doesn't do too well.
"Ahhh, sorry. I didn't get much sleep. I'm hopeful to get some rest on the way there." Nef give a small hurff and lays on their side. Vin looks to them and says "I know, but I wanted to be helpful. I think Gara appreciated us staying up for that last watch." Vin smiles and looks back to Sam. "Anyway, it was a pretty quiet night and I just watched the night give way to day. Oh! That reminds me. Gara said something about some wizard guy buying up the food supplies and selling it back to people? Sounded weird but we are going to need more provisions for the trip. I'm afraid I don't know more then that but want to join me finding him? I know I offered a walk but almost forgot what gara asked me to do."
With Sam and Elthana having left the room, Gewyn rouses himself from his bed. Bending over stiffly, he retrieves his boots before sitting back down on the bed to tug them on one at a time. He pens a quick letter, reads it over at least 5 times, and upon leaving the room, slips it under Darla's door before heading to breakfast. Gewyn grabs a couple of sausages and potatoes, sees Sam's table, and comes over to slide into an empty seat.
He wolfs down his food quickly while listening to Vin and Sam. Upon finishing, he says "That sounds like a great idea. Let's get out of here, go see about those provisions, and then hit the road. No time to waste."He starts to stand and head for the door.
Upon finishing her morning routine, she heads back through the festival area and heads over to the squat man standing by the tent. "Lord Quinn, I presume? May I ask why you are still standing outside your tent? Do you not sleep? Or are you waiting for someone in particular?" She looks around to see if there is anyone else, and then returns her gaze to him. One hand on her hip, waiting for his response.
"Oh! Hi Gewyn, I didn't see you there. Ya, let me just finish this bacon." Vin hastily wolfs down the pile of bacon they had on their plate and gives a handful to Nef to eat too who gobbles it up. Once finished they stand up and say "Alright, lets go get some supplies then." With that Vin will follow Gewyn to the wizard hording food to get supplies and hopefully get some rest on the carriage ride after.
Sam will go on a bit about how the guards are workers and there’s no harm letting them do the job they’re paid to do. “It’s nice you thought to give them a break, don’t get me wrong. I’ve just known some who’d take offense at such a thing, some who’d come to expect it, and many who’d appreciate it but never really be able to relax. See they’re on the hook for the job they were paid to do. Council or whoever won’t accept the excuse that you told them to take a break if something happened while the were off at a fair, eh?”
“Not saying don’t be nice, just want you to understand if someone don’t always appreciate how maybe they should..,”
As Gewyn arrives and seems in such a hurry, Sam wonders if they’re running to the wizard or away from something else. “Don’t s’pose it matters much,” Sam grumbles as he dons the armor he’d been working on as quickly as possible and follows.
“Do you thinking this wizard just profiteering? Or you thinking he cause of the food shortages?”
After asking around, Sam, Gewyn, Vin, and Need find a shop with a two story tower on top of it. The building looks an oddity in the street but was somewhat hidden, recessed into the house around it, the shop sign reads "Wizard Dennis' general shop", as they walk through the large wooden door a bell chimes above them and they are greeted with a sparse magic shop, and some shuffling from the level above, then a slam, then a "hang on please, I'll be right there!".
Elthana looks the squat man up and down... Mostly down, he looks up to her and smiles similarly to how he did the night before. "Only one telling per person I'm afraid, we sleep when sleep is needed, custom is sometimes hard to come by, so the door is always open, but only once per person. Sorry" he continues standing there despite what Elthana does, in the light of day she can't quite tell what race he is under that top hat, it is possible he doesn't need to sleep, but nothing about his demeanour or words perk up her sense of a person lying.
Elthana shrugs her shoulders at the little man's response and continues on her way. Once she gets hear the Inn, she heads to the carriage to see if they were ready to head on out. Upon arrival, all she finds are the two hired guards. She approaches Gara, "Excuse me, but have you seen any of our party out yet this morning? I thought for sure we'd be ready to hit the road by now. Am I missing something?"
Elthana's approach is naturally silent and Walker jumps at her voice, Gara merely turns and scratches his head, "oh it's you, not missing anything I don't think, we're eager to get moving, we only seen Vin and the dog this morning, said he was going for a walk so I sent him out to get the supplies, should be arriving back shortly and we'll away, have you seen the rest of your lot?" he asks as he continues dressing and hitching up the horses, before they bring the carriage back out front.
"You've only seen the boy and his dog? Interesting, I wonder where the rest are? I haven't laid eyes on Ebb since the festival, hope he made it back alright." without another word, she spins on her heel and just as she is about to head to the inn, she looks back again, "Where would he have gone for supplies?"
She then heads to the Inn to see if the rest were just hanging out and enjoying their breakfasts before they hit the road.
Sam looks about the magic shop but is careful to not touch a thing. He doesn't understand magic but he knows enough than to go poking at it. "This wizard certainly does on appear to be getting rich," he thinks half aloud, wondering why they would be buying food and then selling it back if not for profit...
Vin and Nef walk around the general store. The hound going to one side and Vin tot he other as they seem to look at various things. Vin seems to be focused on the request and is seeking supplies for travel. Knowing food was the worst hit in their encounter with the white wolf he seems to be looking for food that travels well as he isn't sure how much longer they will be. He was also just looking around trying to see if anything catches his attention. When Sam brings up the wizard Vin nods and replies "He's certainly well stocked. Shouldn't he be getting orders from the capitol instead of buying everything up at the local level though?" Vin seems a bit curious but otherwise trying to stay focused.
A skinny black haired human man practically stumbles down the stairs, his arms are wet and the sleeves on his cliché blue robe are rolled up past his elbows. As he regains his balance he lifts a large blue hat from his back and places it on his head, "Hey there! Ahh... welcome to Wizard Dennis' general shop, I am the titular Dennis and.. erm, what can I do for you gentlemen?" The guy looks exhausted.
"They're looking for a wizard shop, supplies are there apparently" Gara says over his shoulder to Elthana as she makes her leave. Back at the bar she finds no sign of Sam, Gewyn or Vin, Trina at the bar nods toward the door as she makes eye contact with Elthana, understanding full week who she's looking for.
