"He says that the story where he is from is that you were jealous of your mother and the Djinni since they were immortal and that you attempted to open the gate to get yourself some of that by making a deal with Nectyran... But that you were struck down first. He claims that they believe this is the holy word from Vox Tontritor herself..." Sam relays in Giant. "I think they're a bunch of bird brains myself..."
"Yes, yes," Sam says to Muir and then he changes back to Giant and relays that "Muir wants me to remind you that many still have faith in you and believe you are living up to your task. The ones who believe that you turned may be in power but I don't believe they are in the majority..."
"this is a shame, it is much the same as has been reported to me previously... That visitor you mentioned... Her." He looks over to Elthana. "She was here a day before I was killed, she wanted to speak to Nectyran, to gain favour or a boon. I told her then, as is true now, my guard goes both ways none may leave the shadowfell and none may gain entrance, if they do it is my duty to kill them even after death i will not be stopped. I told her to take her qualms up with the Raven Queen, the one who tasked my mother with finding a suitable guard, the one who I am sworn to... After she left I had more visitors, folk from the town above, they sought refuge in the depths of this sanctum, and told me of the carnage that that woman had subjected the community to, murder and the turning of the dead, the cruellest punishment to those who worship the raven as it keeps their souls from being delivered... She reduced the city to a roving mass of husks, as if she herself were Nectyran. Those who found refuge here thought they were the lucky ones, maybe they were, the next day when the shattering happened they didn't stand a chance. When I heard the ground above us cracking I had them huddle beneath me for safety, but when I was struck they were vaporised. You might wonder why they were the lucky ones, but at least their souls, and bodies, and memories, were taken by the raven in one fell swoop.
For a while I did not know what had happened, I was half buried I could not move my body, I could not feel the presence of those who were with me, so I just stood strong, knowing that my own presence was enough to keep anything escaping the gates... It's wasn't until much later that I realised I was already dead. Still standing trying to protect those who were also gone...
You mentioned that this woman may be responsible for that, maybe responsible for whatever happened to my mother too... Why then do you travel with a mirror of her? You said this is not the same woman, how?" As he finishes his tale in his giant speech he looks to Elthana and does not look away, trying to understand what she is as Sam translates for the group.
Vin can't help but turn and look at Elthana as well, as Lumithor does, but he doesn't say anything. Sam was the interpreter after all.
Whilst Sam does translate, he does as Elthana had asked before, and explains that it would take some time to retrieve the original piece of bone. It might also distract the great dragon from his focus on Elthana, which had to be a little disconcerting.
"Great Lumithor, We have heard back from our people. It will take possibly 4 hours for the return of the original bone that was taken. It has to be replaced before it can be removed. They will work as quickly as they can, but with time working slower there, it will seem longer here. We didn't want you becoming impatient without this fact", he says. "Of course, that does mean we will be here to keep you company for longer", he adds putting on a positive spin to the news.
"No, no, no, no, no, no, no..." Sam pipes up immediately. "Not her. Not. Her." Sam moves to stand between the face and Elthana. He probably cannot block their view but he does what he can.
"That there is Elthana. I travel with Elthana. Am friends with Elthana. Family in all but blood with Elthana," Sam explains. "The one we believe responsible goes by the name of Nivara. Nivara is NOT Elthana...."
"I don't... Magic and stuff... It's kind of too big for my head, eh? Simple. I like simple... Unfortunately this is not simple... Long, long ago this Nivara woman used magics to try to create a failsafe. She tried to make it so that if she, Nivara, died that instead of dying she would transfer her thoughts and memories and all to a new body elsewhere. How? I don't know, man... Magic is weird. And I don't know if she screwed up or if it just can't be done or if potions just got mixed up or what but what we can figure and guess is that Nivara got injured. Injured really bad. Almost but not quite dead bad. When this happened the body, the safeguard, somehow got fooled and got activated. Brought to life... So Nivara didn't actually die so Nivara is still Nivara. The body did come to life though... But Nivara is Nivara so the body was... who?" Sam asks and then looks behind him towards Elthana and gives her a reassuring smile.
"Maybe it was karma or something? Or maybe the innate stuff that makes Nivara an evil ***** stayed with Nivara because Nivara is Nivara and that is what makes her Nivara? But the new life... the body... That became Elthana. Thanks goodness because we need an Elthana... Cause Elthana is good and kind and when she laughs, which isn't often enough, she get's this little wrinkle across her nose. I'll lay good odds that Nivara doesn't get that wrinkle," Sam explains. "So Nivara wanted a clone to continue living but since she didn't fully die and Nivara stayed Nivara the clone had to be someone else. They turned out being a much better person... A person I would lay my life down for. A person I am proud to stand beside. Nivara is Nivara and we believe she did those evil things and is alive and likely planning more... But Elthana is Elthana and is NOT Nivara. Elthana wants to stop Nivara. Elthana knew nothing about Nivara til just recently but learning who and what she is, Elthana wants Nivara to truly die... How then could I not travel with her? Her looks may be a mirror of Nivara but the parts that matter is anything but..."
While letting the dragon chew on that and think it over, Sam turns to Vin and listens to his news... ((Vin is just comprehending Giant, not speaking right?)) "Let's not trouble them with time issues until they ask, eh? All the questions may get us past then anyway..." Sam says in common to him. "But yeah, good to know for if he does ask."
Lumithor's crystal face sinks back a little in thought, still looking essentially through Sam, and at Elthana, until an idea settles in his mind and he smiles, "you value Your friends above all Sam. This is a god quality, I am curious though... Could you translate for me, I have questions for your friend Elthana..."
Serafina shuffles a little uncomfortably, she understands the giant to a certain degree and her demeanour becomes tense.
As vin speaks, lumithor calls over, "four hours!? How will you get the bones there and the other one back in just four hours? do you have some kind of quick transportation across realms? ...take those bones I pointed out, time is all we have here, I'm an old and patient sort, but your city needs the help fast."
"I can, of course..." Sam replies and then walks over to Elthana.
Speaking quietly Sam quickly retells her what he has told the dragon and why. "They seem entirely reasonable and just curious as to the truth. I think honesty is the best policy here... Within reason, as always," he adds and gives her a bit of a smirk. "So they want to ask you some questions and I am to translate, if that is ok with you. Just be calm... I will be right besides you. You got this..." And assuming she is agreeable, Sam walks Elthana up to the Face of L and introduces them.
Elthana waits in the back of the group as all the giant is spoken around her. She's glad Vin tries to give the dragon an idea on when they can expect his bone and he doesn't appear annoyed at all.
But then he looks directly at her. She then sees Sam try to get between them... but the Face's outward demeanor is amicable? She's about to step out when Sam tells her what has been said. She smiles gratefully at the man and steps out from behind the rest and let him see her fully, enough of this hiding. She was ready to answer what she could.
Gewyn looks down at the first bone, rubbing his chin in thought. He grabs his knife and moves around to the back side of the bone to start chipping away around the ground. "The one is a little stuck," he says calmly. "But I should have it out in a moment."There is a small cracking sound, and Gewyn slips his knife away, stooping to work at the second bone. "Someone want to grab one while I grab the other?"
The face looks upon Elthana closely weighing her up and then glances to Sam and begins speaking giant, "tell her, that I'm sure having a creator like Nivara has caused her no end of trouble and anguish and that I'm sorry if that is the case. My creator killed me, so I feel we have something in common there with odd origins.
But also I would like to know if Elthana had already awoken at the point when I met Nivara or whether Nivara was still whole and thus, technically Elthana was still part of Nivara..."
Oddly enough Neferox sighs, squints at Gewyn with a judging expression and then trudges over to assist him roll the bone out of its resting place. As a large creature, she waits for Gewyn to finish chipping and then simply puts her paws on the top of the sides leaning all her weight out to roll the bones over and loose enough for the others to pick up.
Vin is already on his way over to help Gewyn, and so when Neferox assists in freeing the bone, he is pretty much on hand give her a pat and then to collect the bone and carry it over towards Elthana.
"Do you want me to send it across?", he asks Elthana as he puts down the bone and holds a hand out for the bag, seeing that she is now speaking to Lumithor.
"Lumithor says he is sorry you had Nivara as a creator," Sam translates into common. "In a sympathetic way, it seems. Says he is sure it has caused you anguish and he is sorry for that. He was slain by his own creator so he feels a bit of kinship to your situation..."
Sam pauses a bit and frowns. "This next bit... I will try to translate exactly as I'm afraid it may be a tricky bit. Lumithor wants to know if you, Elthana, had already awoken when Nivara met Lumithor here. He says he is wanting to know if Nivara was still whole when they met... If you were still a part of Nivara at that point...?"
Sam looks to Vin shoving the bone into the bag and continues speaking, partly to slow down the coming answer to try and ensure at least one bone gets sent. Partly just to ensure Elthana considers her answer. "I'm not sure what is better here. If you were not you yet then he may carry the blame to you since you were part of her when it happened? But if you were you by that point... I guess I think that may be the safer answer but I am not sure if it is the truth? And we should tell the truth if we can... Mostly?" Sam frowns and eyes Vin and his handling of the Dragon's Bone again. Sam wants to be sure Vin gets that off before they possibly anger the dragon... ((Eww, that sounds really dirty....))
"So I don't know? I don't know what to suggest except think about the answer before you say it? And the longer you take the longer they have to finish moving the bones..."
Upon hearing that Lumthor was actually sympathetic to her situation, she gives the great head a slight bow attempting to show her appreciation.
"The rapport you have with this dragon... I don't want to sully it with lies. They met 4000 years ago and in this plane's time frame, I came to life 100 years ago. Elves don't live 4000 years, even though.." she pauses and thinks a bit, "honestly I have no idea how long I will live being a clone of a vampire but not a vampire? My best guess is that my life will track that of a shadow elf, and I'm sure he would know that life span."
"I wouldn't say I was part of Nivara? Though he is making that conclusion for himself, but that I have only been in existence for 100 years." She's glad that at least one of the bones has been put in the bag, she hopes the other will follow soon.
Sam nods and listens as closely as possible. Elthana is talking numbers and outside of buying a round or normal shopping numbers tend to confuzzle him quite easily. "Ok, ok. I think I have it," Sam responds in common before turning back to more directly face the Face of L.
"First the numbers before I confuse them," Sam says in Giant slowly. He is still buying time for the transfer of the bones but also just trying to keep everything straight. "Elthana believes you met Nivara four thousand years ago, give or take. I don't think she has that memory, that is the number we have discovered since coming to this realm and finding things out..."
"She states that Elves do not live that long. She says she is unsure how long she will live since as far as we can tell she is a clone of a vampire but that she is not a vampire herself. Not sure if that really even classifies her as a clone or not, come to think of it... But that is me just thinking out loud. Can you clone yourself but not all of yourself and expect your clone to be you? Maybe that is what went wrong and why Elthana is Elthana and not Nivara?" Sam asks.
"Anyway, maybe you understand magic. I certainly don't. Point is that Elthana doesn't know how long she will live but expects maybe the normal span of a Shadow Elf... So far she has been alive for just 100 years. 'Just', am I right? Oh... Well I guess maybe to you 100 is 'just.' Sorry... Seems a whole lot to me though. My kind don't get that much time even in a long lived life..." Sam continues...
"So Elthana does not believe she is a part of Nivara. When she awoke she did not have any of Nivara's memories or thoughts or anything. She lived 100 years being Elthana. Not sure one can live that long being themselves and really become someone else, ya know?" Sam asks. "Again, that is me thinking... But don't you think so?"
Lumithor watches the interaction between Sam and Elthana not understanding them but obviously taking in their body language and expressions. As Sam translates back for him he nods along. "Nivara was whole and Elthana had not awoken yet... I'm not sure the process of cloning or how it would look if it succeeded, though I'm sure with Nivara's use of such a spell and of course her undead curse, she likely wanted an outcome where Elthana did not exist at all and Nivara became whole, cheating the Raven Queen once again... The reason I ask is that even if there is the slightest chance that Elthana knows what Nivara's plan here was, what she really really wanted with Nectyran. I've been wracking my brains for thousands of years and I cannot think why; was it worship, was it to gain a more advanced level of undeath, or was it simply to free him, if the latter is true then surely she would have returned but she has not... could you ask Elthana to really wrack her brains, try to think back to when she was not herself, and figure out Nivara's true intention?"
Serafina who has been straining to keep up with the giant butts in and speaks auran to Lumithor.
Vin with his tongues potion and Gewyn with comprehend languages both hear her say, "wait that could be dangerous, we don't know the level of connection that Elthana has to Nivara, she's already been wracked with memories and nightmares likely due to her recognising places here, if she forces this connection we don't know if Nivara's memories will flood through her and alter her permanently!"
After her little outburst Serafina realises who exactly she is talking to and regains a little composure, bowing once again and adding, "advice for your consideration, my honourable servant of the queen"...
Muir butts in “But, Sam tell him we know this not to be true and would like to hear what happened that day”
"Yes, yes," Sam says to Muir and then he changes back to Giant and relays that "Muir wants me to remind you that many still have faith in you and believe you are living up to your task. The ones who believe that you turned may be in power but I don't believe they are in the majority..."
