As Elthana doesn't reply to Vin the boy takes it that she is upset with him. He cleans the blood off her then just walks off. This is when Sam catches his attention and the young man walks over to talk with Sam instead. Sam tries to give Vin advice and he's thankful for it as he replies "That obvious its my first fight huh? Yeah, they don't teach this in books or sparing. I just... it feels bad to have to kill them. Is it normal to feel bad about it? You seem so tough and you didn't hesitate. It doesn't seem to bother you either and you seem so confident. You kind of remind me of Nef in that way. I know I needed to kill them. It's a kill or be killed world... I just wish it wasn't." Vin looks a bit disheartened. Not terribly so but its clear he's not comfortable with killing despite recognizing its often a necessity in this world.
As talk shifts to roles and helping Sam Vin gets a bit flustered as they say "Wait, did I do poorly? I tried my best to protect Elthana and Nef keeping the wolves from surrounding them. Should I have done something different? Should I have summoned a spirit instead to divide their attacks more? Awww, man. I thought I did well in the fight. So, I can't find my role in protecting others? I thought that was like.. ya know, a hero thing to do?" Obvious that the boy is trying to do their best to help and make things better and easier for those around him. As Sam asks for his help Vin lights up with a big smile and says "Oh, yeah, let me help. I don't mind doing first watch if people are tired. Whatever makes it easier for you all." Vin helps Sam with moving the meat to be stored and packed so that the lost food was at least partially replaced. The boy is then extremely helpful through the entire camp picking things up, checking to see what's damaged and making the best of the situation by being generally helpful around the camp.
Walker avoids Vin. This seems to bother him greatly but he has no idea what to say. Vin just seems to accept that walker doesn't want anything to do with him. Vin can't help but feel that it's been the worst start to a mission ever. He just hopes he can do better tomorrow and maybe find a way to properly apologize to walker, Elthana and the rest for his screw up.
"It always feels bad. If it ever stops feeling bad then I suspect there's something wrong with you... But when it is life or death it's..." Sam shrugs, trying to think of an apt comparison but not always the quickest mentally. "You shouldn't just chop down trees for no reason, right? It's a waste. But if you're building something then maybe you feel bad about the tree but it's for the best, right?"
"No, no... You did fine. Everyone did. We're all here and alive to discuss it, aren't we? I can't tell you what you should have done, I don't know what you can do. I also wasn't there for the start of things. You did what you could, that's all anyone asks," Sam says trying to calm the boy's concerns. "But if I was to give a bit of instruction... Don't think about being a hero. Nobody becomes a hero trying to. If anything, trying for it leads to some piss poor decisions. In a fight, think about winning the fight. Screw it all about how you look winning it."
Once the camp is fixed, people healed up, and everyone fed with either their dry rations or Sam's helpful gathering of wolf meat (a tough but tasty meal), the night air cools and sleep takes the majority.
Elthana pretty much keeps to herself in camp as they work to get it back together. As she overhears Sam and Vin's conversation, she walks by and adds a bit to it, "Sam's right, don't attempt to be the hero. Though I don't know why you're fussing about how you did. Honestly, whatever you did to cause fear in those wolves helped so much. Not sure if you could tell, but I kept retreating next to you. Part to make sure you weren't harmed, part because whatever you did I knew the ones that were frightened of you weren't coming any closer."
She turns to Sam, "How the hell did you get so big? I mean.. i'm glad you didn't stay that way, would be hard to accomplish much with a giant in our midst."
As they all start settling down and the boy and dog take first watch, Elthana quietly finds an area a little away from the rest to contemplate and set herself in a trance.
"Big?" Sam asks, quizzically. He looks at his left arm. He looks at his right arm. He then shrugs. "Eat right, hard work I guess..."
If pressed Sam is honestly confused by what he's being asked. "Never did seen myself fight before," and "If it helps I can't say I'm against it," are common types of replies. On some level he suspects there's some oddness in his fights on occasion but he's not really sure of the what and definitely not of the how.
The first watch shift comes, Walker begrudgingly agrees to watch during Vin's shift only after Gara stares him down, however most of the watch Walker stays far away from the dog and the Half elf.
The copper smell of blood lies thick in the wind, Ebb hears some crunching of leaves coming from the battle field, but also recognises the flutter of wings and soft cawing too as scavenger birds have come to feast.
Half way through the shift Walker whispers a warning to Ebb "you make sure that dog don't come near me you hear?, You clerics are supposed to stop fights and things right? That dog hates me..." He nods to the other side of the campsite where Neferox appears to be sneering at the guard, Vin at this point is oblivious to the fact, looking out into the darkness, vigilant.
The three of you stay awake through the first shift and perceive no threats.
Vin seems a little relieved as Elthana talks to them. They were a bit worried. They were also a bit flustered as Elthana complimenting them on their spell. The boy blushes a little bit and says lamely "Oh, umm... thank you Elthana. I tried. Nef taught it to me. It's a fear spell. Told me it can get even stronger the more I practice it. So, don't attempt to be the hero. You both seem to really believe this. I mean, i want to be a famous adventurer. The heroes of the Cavalcade are my heroes... I guess after reading their biography book they didn't really set out to be heroes either." Vin seems deep in thought as they move off to finish with the camp.
Watch was pretty uneventful. Vin made rounds going around the carriage several times. They tried to approach Walker once but when they purposely avoided Vin the boy just looked sad and whatever they wanted to say to Walker stayed in their mind. Unspoken as the uncertain young man just sticks to their duty. They pet Nef a few times on their way past and indeed they never seem to notice Nef's glare at Walker. The dog apparently looking innocent and cute every time Vin approached them. They even got some belly rubs from Vin and their tail wagged. As soon as Vin walked off the hound went back to glaring at and almost seems to grin as they watch Walker. Making the other young man more and more nervous as the night goes on.
A quiet night as Vin walks around keeping a watch on things otherwise.
On his watch Sam mostly tries to maintain just enough attention to be attentive but otherwise tries to keep dozey enough to hopefully be able to return to slumber when he gets relieved. He will make a pass or three of the perimeter, stepping once a few trees past in order to relieve himself, but he's not trying to do nothing much more than make sure they are attacked.
"Walker and the kid," he does mention to Gara once during the night. "I didn't see their beef but whoever at fault it'll need to be mended if we're all to continue being in such close proximity..." Sam tries to say it in such a way as to not start a conversation but to just speak a truth.
The first half of Ebb’s watch is spent mending the cart, casting a minor meditation on broken or damaged sections of it.
He looks up when Walker pipes up about the dog, which he looks over at and catches a sneer. It gave him a bad feeling as well, but it was a member of the party so he had to find a way to smooth things over to Neferox and Vin.
Ebb walk over to the dog and boy, crouches down with elbows on knees and looks to the canine. “Hi Neferox. Sorry about getting your name wrong before. Can I ask a favor? Can you ease up on that guard Walker a bit.” He looks over to the guard then back to the dog trying to make sure the man isn’t on earshot and lowers his voice “I know you like tormenting him, but doing so causes a rift and draws too much attention to you, and the boy. At least wait until we can leave them, the. You can leave them with a good scare if you want.” He says with a bit of a chuckle.
The Verdan had worked with others that gave off the aura that this dog has is similar. He treats the dog as an equal. He looks to Vin. “I know Neferox wants to protect you, but let’s not cause trouble with the help we have. You fought well. The others are right, don’t try to be a hero, just do what you think is right and your actions will be acknowledged. Hero’s do and are called heroes after. Just worry about staying alive and doing your best to keep others alive. That’s what hero’s do. You have great skill, now you can put it to the real world.” He nods and smiles. “We got your back, I hope you and Neferox have ours.”
At first Neferox doesn't look at Ebb but as they offer an apology the hound turns its head to look directly at Ebb. The red eyes boring into them with a keen interest. The hound seems to ponder the request. Her head tilting to one side quizitively then they nod with a grin showing of rows of razor sharp teeth at the proposal to scare walker later. The dog stares at Ebb for a bit but beyond the smile no acknowledgment is made.
Ebb would notice Neferox start to look around a bit more attentively and not just watching Walker like a creep. As Ebb goes over to Vin they find them behind the carriage keeping a watch on things on the other side. They seem nervous when Ebb approaches but as Ebb talks of Nef the boy has to look at Nef who just looks right back at them.
Vin smiles, then frowns and looks at Ebb again. "I'm sorry if Nef caused more trouble. They really are a good girl. They just want me to be stronger. Happier. I shouldn't of talked to the clerics. I should of gone back first so Walker wouldn't of worried then Ebb could of approached them." Vin seems genuine in that they think they are to blame.
Talk of heroes brings it in another direction though: Vin seems to ponder that as they say "You're the third to say that. I'm going to try my best to not bog you all down. I got your back Ebb!"
With Vin and Ebb's shift over they wake Sam, Gara, and Foley the Kenku Cleric, Walker is still sour faced as he makes his bed more comfortable and is soon asleep. Neferox finds no problem in curling up next to the dwindling campfire and also succumbing to slumber.
"Walker and the kid," he does mention to Gara once during the night. "I didn't see their beef but whoever at fault it'll need to be mended if we're all to continue being in such close proximity..." Sam tries to say it in such a way as to not start a conversation but to just speak a truth.
Gara returns a nod, "I know, I know, The boy means well, tries hard, but has a frustrated childish streak in him, doesn't like it when things feel unfair. I know he's not gonna like the dog however much I talk to them but I'm pretty sure I can get him to talk to your boy amicably."
The Kenku remains highly vigilant throughout the entire watch at one point he puts a hand on Sam's shoulder and beckons him toward the treeline. "I heard something, come help me check it out, the guard will stay and guard, as is his want"
Sam pauses a moment and listens, turning his head in the direction the bird like man indicated and straining for a sense of anything. With nothing coming to him he pauses one more moment and looks at the Kenku. He really never questioned these two, just took them in after the fight… squinting his eyes a moment he studies the pastor and wonders if that was a mistake. (Insight: 12)
With a shrug and a soft grunt, Sam gets to his feet. “Pssst… Gara!” Sam quietly calls out over to the guard til he gets his attention. “Keep alert. He’s heard something that way, we’ll check it out…” The third watcher alerted, Sam will indicate the Kenku should lead the way.
Foley the Kenku seems to be telling the truth, he was alerted to a noise and merely wishes backup as he checks it out, Sam being the harder hitter and having spoken with Sam before, the Kenku apparently feels more comfortable with Sam accompanying than the Grumpy Guard.
Gara nods in affirmation, getting up from his watch post by the fire so that he can keep a better eye and ear around the camp as Sam and Foley make their way out into the darkness.
Elthana wakes from her trance and surveys the campsite. As she does, she only notices Gara on watch? What happened to Sam and the Kenku? She quietly gets up and heads over to Gara.
"Excuse me, but why are you the only one on watch? What happened to the others? Everything ok?" she keeps looking around, trying to ascertain if there is any danger nearby.
They hadn't been gone long so Sam is surprised to see Elthana already awake and about. Seemingly well before their own turn at watch even. Sam gives a nod of greeting and makes his way over to them, stepping careful as he is still trying to stay quiet in consideration of the sleepers.
"Was nothing," he says quietly to answer the assumed question from both Gara and Elthana. "Foley... The Kenku... heard something. Turned out to be a rock. Well, a Galleb Durr, I think they called it. Looks like a boulder with a face. Foley says it's not a problem, we leave it alone and it'll leave us alone. Sounds like a plan to me. But y'know, just be aware it's out there..."
Sam then lets out a large yawn. "You're up early," he says specifically to Elthana. "Any cause?"
Elthana only raises an eyebrow to Sam's report of the supposed boulder. She had never heard of such a thing, but was glad to at least know it was out there.
"I only need 4 hours of downtime to be fully recharged; you look tired. Why don't you go ahead and take your rest now, I'll get Gewyn and the lizard guy up soon." and without waiting for a response she climbs the nearest tree to get a good look from above.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Sam nods in thanks but says "Naw, I'll man my watch..." He then proceeds to go sit with his back against something while watching the perimeter and listening for oddness. His eyelids growing heavier with each breath...
(Con save to stay awake? 21 )
It's tough, and his eyes do on occasion stay shut longer than mayhap they should, but Sam more or less finishes his watch awake.
((That's what I get for editing posts... Was a 12 firstly. Then showed me a 10 after edit but with the dice all wobbly when I hovered mouse over it. But whatever. Sam struggled to stay awake but more or less did.))
Before Sam knows it, his watch comes to an end. Foley and Gara prepare to bed down and wake Gewyn and Scratch, in the process. The moisture in the air condenses and begins settling on the ground, signaling the dawn approaching in a couple of hours, bugs begin crawling out of their holes and buzzing around the trees gathering nutrients, whilst the darkened sky wears a faint halo as the sun crests the horizon radiating far far above this still sleepy campsite.
As Gewyn is woken by Gara, the guard tells him "Your shadow elf is already up on lookout, you might want to check on her but I'm sure she's fine" He then promptly settles in to attempt sleep by the embers of last night's fire.
Gewyn rouses slowly, though his sleep had not been comfortable. He stands and straightens his back, arching slightly to work out the kinks, and looks over to Gara, but the man seems to already be heading off to bed.
Gewyn sighs and retrieves his belt, birdpipes, and notebook, and starts looking around for his watch companion. A few minutes later, snapping branches underfoot announce his presence as he approaches the tree where Elthana is stationed. He shivers a bit and rubs his arms in the damp predawn chill and whispers, "Hey, is that you, Elthana? Or just shadow number 54? I swear, you blend in too well. Took me ages to find you."
He stands beside her a moment, looking out into the darkness. "Everything all good over here?"
As Gewyn heads to her tree and whispers to her, Elthana jumps down from her perch and lands softly on her slippers right next to him. She smiles at his compliment and responds to his question, "All good. Been up for a little bit and do not see anything in the vicinity that would cause alarm. Not sure if that white wolf got what they wanted or plans on coming back or not. Have you ever seen one act the way that wolf did? And the size, never seen a wolf so big."
She looks around a moment and points in the direction that Sam and the kenku came from, "Also, they mentioned a boulder with a face in that direction that if we leave it alone, it will leave us alone." she again returns to her watch enjoying the fresh morning and sunrise.
