Sorrow, seeing the chest pulled from the ground, wanders over a bit closer to see what the excitement is about. Grunting in a semi-satisfied tone, she beckons Mill to step aside with her a pace. Lowering her voice, she asks 'Since you've some-ok, a lot-of skill with cooking, can you size up a piece of meat and tell somewhat what cuts would be good from it? If so, I could really use that skill to add a bit of "flavor" {yes, the pun IS intended} to my questioning...'
If the answer is yes: 'Good. While I sharpen my knives. bring your spices and a marking stick over to the fire and "study" the prisoner, making sure to comment on the worthiness of the cut of meat as you mark on him-you know, how tasty it'll be, how much fat, or need to slow cook or sear first then cook-stuff like that. You'll want to yell for Azurewrath to come pick out his favorite pieces parts and ask her how best to cook them. We can try the tag team approach on him at first.'
If the answer is no: 'Ok. I'm going to make a show of sharpening my knives in front of him-all of them-and sort of explain what each is for. I need you to come over at some point and ask if you can help me cut and cook him. I then plan to explain what I'm going to cut and cook and-you can't act squeamish when you do this-you'll need to pinch his thigh and then yell for Azurewrath to come pick out his favorite tender bits he'd like to have roasted.'
She then checks the coals, pulls a large piece of wood over in front of the prisoner and, using it as a stool, sits down and starts honing her various knives-a skinning, gutting, deboning and fillet, giving a running commentary on the use of each and a visual 'air display' of the use as well.
Millwater hands bowls of noodles to Festoon, Azurewarth and Veeshal. "Eat up, the rice balls are good til nightfall but the noodles need to be eaten while still warm." Looks into the hole, then at the chest. "Just toss the bowls into the fire when your done." And then heads back to the fire 🔥 to give Sorrow her bowl. He listens to Sorrow's request, furrows his brow and says softly "Mew, absolutely!" He looks at the bandit. "I could wash him and give him a quick examination for disease and parasites." Grins mischievously
Millwater sets up a bucket of water, soap, spices, chalk and a rag next to bandit. He removes the gag and with a practiced efficiency he begans "Can you tell me what diseases you have experienced growing up? Do you drink from the river without boiling?" While examining his body closely he wets a rag and soaps it up. And gets started on a leg. Scrubbing hard on the bandits toes, he pulls them apart to and fro examining for mights and ticks, sniffs wounds smelling for corruption. While asking questions with cold detachment not expecting answers because he is hitting nerve points with cold water and roughly scrubbing. Massaging the bandit's leg like he is rubbing seasonings, then picks up the chalk. He marks out the locations of individual muscles of the leg along with the long tendons.
Disappointed the condition skin isn't worth making crackling. He palates the bandit's abdomen feeling weird lumps that shouldn't be there. He thinks (eww, not making sausage with this)
"Azurewrath, what cuts do you like?" Beckoning over with his paw "The skin has boils and abscess from poor hygiene." Millwater looks intently into the bandits eyes while saying with emphasis "The meat 🍖 is prime but I wouldn't want anything with the brains and offal." Tying a tourniquet onto the leg but not fully tightening it. "I could just bandage after amputation to keep rest of the meat from spoiling?"
Festoon also approaches closer, looking at the chest for closing mechanisms. "I'm a bit handy with locks and clasps, if you'd like some help? Oh, and what about that larger crate? You think it contains the undead defenders the note mentioned?"

Vee nods his head in appreciation ‘Yes, please. My skills don’t lend themselves to such ventures-having someone more skilled than I take charge of opening the chest is very much welcome’. He swallows hard as he looks at the larger box. ‘Maybe a quick prayer over the hole wouldn’t be amiss. At least make me feel better…’ he says with a shudder.
He turns back to the hole, folds his hands and bows his head. Taking a deep breath he begins to chat/sing a hymn of peace and rest in a moderately deep baritone. Once finished, he closes his eyes and opens his hands palms up ‘May the Light of Sharindler guide you to your Eternal Rest.’ He straightens up, opens his eyes then kneels and proceeds to uncover more of the larger chest.
Sorrow gets up and tests the edge on her knives by trying to shave hair from the prisoner-his head face arms. She’ll nod and smile once they are honed to that razors edge she wanted. Once Mill and Azurewrath have done their part, Sorrow squats down in front of the prisoner and makes eye contact. ‘You and your friends have been terrorizing these people for far too long. You’re going to tell us everything about your activities-including naming names and the location of where everything is hidden.’ She smiles-but it never reaches her eyes. ‘You’ve been a bad man and done some very very nasty things. Some would even say monstrous. But as you can see, we’re not fully human, and you’re about to learn the true meaning of monstrous…’
She stands to remove her cloak, arching her back to stretch as that also frees her tail. Rolling out her shoulders she then strips off her hand wraps and gloves, exposing the long nails on her hands. ‘We’re going to ask you questions-and you’re going to answer them. Truthfully. Because you won’t like what happens if you lie. I’ve survived in the wilds by learning to eat whatever I catch. And it’s pretty apparent I’ve caught you.’ She bends down to put her face close enough he can feel her breath. ‘And as you heard from MY friends, they’re not squeamish or finicky when it comes to filling their bellies either.’
’Now I know you’re probably thinking-I can lie, and they’ll never know it. Let me set you straight’ she points to Vee ‘our young priest over there is part Drow. And they have their strange ways of knowing lies when they hear them. And he can call on the powers of both the Drow goddess and his chosen Deity to dish out retribution. But to let you know I’m serious, I’m going to give you a taste of what you’ll face.’ Replacing the gag, she then lays the longer piece of wood Vee brought across the prisoner’s back and proceeds to loosen then tie each hand behind his back again, securing them to the pole. She’ll have Azurewrath step on his back to keep him down if he struggles while she then secures his legs in the same way. Once he’s secured, she sets up the forked pieces at each end of the firepit and, motioning to the others to lift the other end, places the log across the pit with him hanging face down towards the coals. She pulls out the gag, retrieves her log seat and plops down to wait for him to get uncomfortable.
getting the first crate out of the hole is easy looking at it it seems to be you average shipping crate that would have metal stock rods for a blacksmith inside or even filled with fruits or vegetables. It is closed with two simple hasps that are easy to open the crate. The second one you have to dig more dirt out to free it, as it looks like it barley fitted inside the hole. You will find the two rope handles on either side. I will need a strength check for who ever tries to pull it out.
Meanwhile as you are placing the prisoner on the stout stick he will will answer you questions. He does not know the strength or what is guarding the supplies as he was just a henchman. He can tell you that about a days journey south you will find a trail the heads east into the forest towards a coupe of rather large hills. The trail is wide enough to get a wagon through the trees. He has been just a couple hundred yards down the trail so he has not seen where it leads. Names he can not tell you because he followed the orders of the the Mayor.
When he is placed above the coals he cries out in panic and pain as the heat is intense He keeps saying over and over "I told you all I know!"
Tail Feathers blocks out the sound of the prisoner, feeling that he is getting what he deserves. “I can help dig out around that other crate, but I’m not sure I can lift it.” She sits back on her haunches, front paws ready to move the dirt away from the hole.
Sorrow squats to look him in the eyes. ‘I’m sure you feel you have told us everything. But just to be sure, why don’t you just hang around here for a bit and think about your sins. Like how many other children you’ve wounded or killed or enslaved, and I want to know how many and names.’ She inhaled deeply, pats her stomach and sighs. ‘Ahh-the smell of fresh roasted meat…’ She starts to turn away, stops and turns back. ‘And you might want to consider whose Justice you prefer-a quick end to the pain here, or the stocks in town with a flogging and hanging afterwards. But you choose. And make it quick.’
Millwater stacks up his dirty cookware and heads back to the waters edge along with his net. He casts out the net and quickly cleans up his equipment, when he finishes he retrieves his net. Any fish? On his way back he looks for telltale signs for tubers and wild onions. Any crunchies? He thinks to himself (I'll have to remember to keep an eye out for more victuals)
As he passes by Veeshal in prayer he recognizes its the lady of life prayer! Millwater sets down everything and matches Veeshal's stance and repeats Veeshal's words. At the end they both sing the praises in turn. Shining dancer, mother mercy, lady of life, fount of mother's milk, He turns to Veeshal ands says "its been so long I can't remember it all." "May the Light of Sharindler guide you to your Eternal Rest"

Vee nods and smiles as Mill joins in. After the prayer and both he and Tail dig a bit of dirt away from the box, he motions for Festoon to grab the handle. 'Let's try an assisted lift. Festoon and I will pull up on the same handle while either Tail or Mil scoops more dirt away, and the other tries to push the blade of the shovel under the end we're lifting and try to use it as a fulcrum. Not sure if that's doable, but maybe we can break it free of the ground better that way,'

The prisoner is no longer talking as he screams in pain as his skin begins to turn black and his clothes are smoking heavily.
Meanwhile at the hole the first crate sits beside the hole as you work on clearing the dirt off the top of the second crate. Soon you feel as there is enough dirt out of the way to try lifting the crate up out of the hole. Festoon grabs a hold with Veeshal to pull As he begins to pull Festoon soon pulls himself off balance and falls into the shallow hole on top of the second crate. This causes the crate that was moving slightly upwards to fall back into the hole to its original position.
Sorrow will pull him off before he starts turning black, but she is oblivious to any extra pain or discomfort he may be feeling or in. She’ll douse him with water to smother the smoking clothes, then ask if he has any more to tell about children that have been harmed or went missing in the area. If he continues to scream, rant or blubber she’ll gag him again.
She’ll motion for Azurewrath to help the diggers, figuring she has this one in hand.
Vee helps Festoon out of the hole, checks if they need to move more dirt out, then resumes his place as Azurwrath takes hold of the other end handle. ‘Ok-let’s see if we can pull this out again, with someone on each end using a shovel to apply leverage while Azure and I pull up.’

Millwater sees the plight with the hole and retrieves the latrine shovel. He stomps the business end into the corner and pulls with all his might. The shovel bends a little. So he jumps up higher to the end of the handle, and trys bouncing up and down.
Just a note from the DM The top of the crate is three feet down in the hole. The crate if it is a standard crate will be about two feet thick. If you place shovels down to pry with all you will be really doing is wedging the crate tighter in the hole. Let me know if you still want to use the shovels as you were saying.
Basically I am asking you "Are you sure you want to do it that way?"
After careful consideration, Vee will motion for those using the shovels to cease as he notices the one Mill is using bending without providing any help getting the crate out of the hole.
"Why not just break open the top of the crate while it's still in the hole? We should be able to chop through a bit, at least to see what's inside." Festoon suggests.
