(Maythus, go ahead and roll the extr ahealing you should have gotten during the short rest if you want. You have 1 more hit die available - 1d10+3 healing, and/or the healer, which would be 1d6+6, then go ahead and make any final preparations)
The governor walks to Maythus and claps him on the shoulder gratefully. "We are ever grateful for the services you have all provided for us tonight. I doubt we can ever repay the help you've given us. Good luck."
The governor nods to a guardsman beside the portcullis and he raises the gate for Maythus to step outside. The challenger looks pleased as Maythus approaches. "My name is Cyanwrath. These will be the terms of the fight," he says as Maythus comes to a stop about 30 feet away. "I will release the children before we begin as a show of good faith. The woman will be kept as insurance against interference. If anyone attempts to interfere in the fight, she will die. When the fight is complete and only one of us remains standing, the woman will be released regardless of the victor." He takes a combat stance, readying a spear. "And so, let us begin."
Maythus tries to smash his morning star into Cyanwrath, but the creature dodges the blow, then stabs back at Maythus twice with his spear. Both thrusts find weak spots in the paladin's armor and sink deep into his flesh.
Maythus swings his morning star at Cyanwrath again, this time hitting his mark and knocking scales free where the weapon impacts. Cyanwrath shakes himself a bit, then stabs again with his spear. The spear finds flesh once again, knocking Maythus unconscious as he is overcome by pain. He looks up towards the keep.
Attack: 21 Damage: 8
Attack: 20 Damage: 7
(Talk about good attack rolls. Maythus gimme a death saving throw)
Maythus groans as he lays unconscious on the ground. Cyanwrath looks down at him with a sneer, then back to the keep. “This is the best you have to send against me?!” He shakes his head as he looks back down at Maythus. “Pathetic,” he says and stabs his spear down one more time through a weak spot in Maythus armor. He then turns and walks away.
As he passes the line of kobolds, he motions to them to release the woman. One of the kobolds gives the woman a shove and she runs towards the keep as the kobolds withdraw after Cyanwrath.
Seeing the raiders leaving and the woman coming towards the keep, the man you heard cry out earlier races out to meet her, and they embrace each other fiercely as they come together. Healers rush out of the keep after him and stabilize Maythus.
(6 gives one death save fail, The extra stab inflicts a second. Fortunately you didn’t crit fail for a third one, so you don’t die)
As the healers work on Maythus and eventually bring him back to consciousness, you see all the groups of raiders around the keep pulling out and following cyanwrath, heading out of the town to the southeast.
The healers help Maythus back to where the rest of the party and the governor stand. The guard and the woman follow as well. “I can never thank you enough for what you did,” the guard tells Maythus, holding the woman close. “You almost died to save my wife and children.” The governor speaks up, “All of us in Greenest owe you all a great debt for everything you’ve done here tonight.” He hands two Potion of Healing to Maythus. “It’s little enough as a reward for risking your life, I know. We have little left to reward you with after the town being ransacked tonight. I’ll have to take stock of the situation and see where we stand before I can offer anything else unfortunately.”
(Everyone gets 50 xp for not leaving the guard to go out to fight Cyanwrath himself and getting himself killed saving his family)
(Was some really good attack rolls by Cyanwrath. He’s supposed to win the fight outside of extreme luck, but I expected it to at least take a little longer than it did with Maythus at 21 ac!)
Dawn bows out of the duel (leaving it to the biggest fighters.
