When Drezmir looks over the runes, his eyes widen in realization, "Well...there is a lot here that I cannot decipher as it is written in infernal. However...this still answers a lot of questions."
As they make their way into the next room (the one where the trap just went off) Drezmir explains to the group what he understood from the runes, "It looks like...an elf, or someone who knows elvish, helped Simon perform a ritual sacrifice to change him into a demon. According to the celestial runes that were included, it looks like Simon tried to take measures to preserve the memories of his former self, but as far as I can understand, this ritual could have completely erased who he used to be." He looks to Corvus, "You...wouldn't happen to know Infernal would you?"
Corvus states that there is a trap on the door, which Drezmir immediately sees. Distracted by the trap, he begins thinking of ways to disarm it...but Corvus sets it off and dodges...perhaps he'd meant to set it off? That was a bold move.
Shaking his head as Vex moves to open the door with his crowbar, he says to Corvus, "While they are busy opening the door that, would you be interested in re-examining the runes? If you...or," he looks to Kocino, "Perhaps you, know Infernal? Either way, if one of you can understand the language, it might give us some useful information concerning what we are up against. If Simon has been transformed into a devil...well..." He shrugs, "I can't say it changes much, but it would still be helpful to know what we are fighting. Be he man or monster, he's still Gwen's brother. Perhaps there is a way to undo the damage he's already done to himself." His scars prickle as he says that last sentence, reminding him of the ritual that he had gone through to gain what powers he had. Was there really much of a difference?
After skillfully dodging the darts, Corvus looks at Drezmir, "Of course not. Why would I know such a language?" He sounds oddly bitter when he says this. Then he goes to look over the runes. "You say he used these to turn himself into a demon? ...Interesting." Without really thinking about it, Corvus pulls the more demonic looking book out of his pack, and starts flipping through it, skimming any pages that spark his interest, but really just looking for anything that looks similar to the runes.
Jess glances over at the runes but shies away, they are evil and highly unnatural, not really her forté, and they turn her stomach.
At these new speculations within the group, Jess strengthens her convictions that Simon, or whatever he is now, will have to be put down. The land must be cleansed of his taint. Surely Gwen would understand…
“Ah well, just thought I’d ask,” Draz says. He shakes his head after a moment of silence, then says mostly to himself, “I knew I should have taken Infernal instead of Abyssal. …to late now.”
The voice within Corvus had began to distort and waver slightly upon hearing this information. Though the rumbling had ended Corvus could hear his voice though quieter than usual.
"I can help you with Infernal. Though if it possesses other languages I'll be of little help. Heh.. Let's see what dark secrets this little town has buried.. Shall we?"
Kocino's pan had let out a hardy chuckle upon it's mention.
"Are we sure it was Simon that was turned? To a devil? I suppose we'd have to look at the rest. I am afraid however I do not know Infernal myself.
Vex with brute force had managed to slam the door open! The next room had a familiar blonde man crouching against a door trying to listen. (Crouched next to the door that leads to room 5.) With a shortsword on his side and a bow on his back. The room was much like the last, with many dresser's and cabinets. A few mirrors along with beautiful paintings.
OOC Sadly work is coming up so I'll have to write what Corvus finds when I get back ^^ Probably will PM him what he see's ^^
(OOC: just so we don’t have to backtrack, we’ll just say that Drez took notes on the runes. He can show those to whomever thinks they can try and decipher them.)
Drezmir nods, the strangeness of the pan finally hitting him after the battle. He’d noticed it, it hadn’t occurred to him just how absurd the thing was. Still, it had a point, “That is a good point. I was making assumptions based on what we’ve heard about Simon from Gwen. I thought this ritual might have had something to do with his change in attitude towards his sister, though I suppose it could be something different.”
”Nice work Vex,”Drez says, stepping up to the now opened door. Then he notices the man and reflexively raises his knife, ready to defend himself. Then he realizes… “Robin?”
Corvus visibly smiles when he hears the voice in his head. "Yes, let us see." He thinks back at the voice. After that he continues scanning the runes and words. He goes as far as to pull out a paper and a piece of charcoal to draw the scene and keep for later. (He will try to write/draw all of it if possible.)
Corvus glances through the door once Vex gets it open, but doesn't get ready to move just yet.
"You have a rather inquiring mind young lad! Many theories but an open mind! Yes yes Kocino has made fine friends! Birds of a feather I dare say."
The blonde figure jumps a moment before turning around and drawing his bow. Sharp green eyes, fair skin and blond hair. A typically tall and dashing human rogue, it was Robin all right.
"What the? What are you guys doing here? Don't tell me you're on Simon's pay roll too."
OOC That sounds good for Drezmir I'm glad we talked a little on it in PM's too ^^
Also looking back the only two books in the room were
Drezmir frowns, "Do we look like we came here invited? No, we are not. We are actually on our way to confront him." He pauses, giving a fleeting glance to Gilded as if unsure of whether or not to continue. After a moment, he says, "We heard about your men. Some of us are...indecisive, but none of us want to see anyone get hurt here. I assume you are here for your men, and we decided that if we come across them we will do what we can to free them. Of course, Gilded here has some...suggestions that I would implore you to and yours to consider." He pauses, nodding to his friend. He would like to just offer their help, but he knows the Dragonborn paladin isn't to keen on working with these criminals.
"I must ask though," he says slowly. "Are you here just for your men, or do you too plan to strike at Simon? There are dark forces at work here, and we have reason to believe that there may be a demon involved. Perhaps it would be in our best interest to work together on this matter?" He intentionally keeps the information about the demon vague not wanting to sour Robin's opinion of Simon even more.
(Oh the arcana was for the runes. I for some reason thought one of the books looked demonic. He would start with the history book)
Corvus rolls his eyes at the 'birds of a feather comment,' but keeps examining the runes. He is aware that the others just found Robin, but he pays him no mind. At least not yet. Drezmir seems to have the situation handled.
Robin lowers his bow down as Drezmir begins to speak.
"I suppose.. You and Gwen are crazy bastards both. He has.. Suggestions? For us to consider? Being? ..Yes I have some of my men here, I brought the others here. Gwen made it to the second floor by herself. She offered to lead the men I brought since her own are still fighting on the first floor. She's a tough broad I'll give her that, her and my boys gave me enough of a distraction to make it here to the third floor. Maybe than I can put an end to Simon's madness. Still.. This place is crawling with guards... I don't remember him having so many men and yet.. Still you all here seem in full force."
Drezmir had made the offer to work together. Robin places her bow on her back crossing his arms in thought for a moment.
"These sort of things usually have a catch.. I'm usually better at sneaking around myself. I've no idea how you do things nor how you fight. Well.. I suppose at the battle with Jet.. I've some idea. Hmm.. I suppose it depends on you're friends terms but.. If they seem agreeable I don't see why we cannot fight together. After Simon is defeated I can free my men without putting them at risk. Maybe Glazing Wind.. Can rise again without the sacrifices he's made."
OOC Go ahead and roll history ^^ And I can PM you what he gets for his Arcana check on the runes in the cellar before. What did he roll again? 16? Sorry still tired from work haha
Jess watches the exchange between Robin and her group carefully. She knows she's not the one with the convincing arguments, so she lets the others do the talking.
Kocino steps forward. “Our group could not come to an agreement on letting your men out or leaving them to deal with Simon. Some hoped to let them out and gain their assistance. The others didn’t want to release them due to whatever crimes they committed.”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Robin takes a step back but nods at Kocino's statement.
"Well I appreciate the honesty, I'll admit I'm not proud of everything I've done. However I wasn't going to let this town become solely dependent on Simon, besides even he couldn't feed everybody. I don't know his whole deal.. I know enough. My men followed me to survive take my freedom when this is all done so be it. Those men deserve to go back to their families when this is over."
Robin looks over the group to try and gauge a feel of the air and tension. 17 Insight
Though when his eyes gloss over Jess he goes from rather tense and serious to offering a light wink. (He does not use Insight on Jess)
"Well.. If it isn't the beautiful Genasi! After the whole excursion with Jet I thought I'd never see you around here again." Robin hadn't lowered his guard entirely but he had at least eased up if only a bit.
“Hello again. We would be glad of your help in these dangerous circumstances. Tell me, are you hurt at all? I have some healing abilities, if you need it. And do you know where to find Simon?”
Vex then looks at Robin, and tells him: ”I do not want to ruin the mood, but Simon has been studying necromancy. This type of magic is strange, and something might be wrong with him. Simon has changed, and not for the better. He has become what I despise, a corrupt person higher up in the hierarchy. We will help you, and defeat him.”
Drezmir’s spirits lift when he hears that Gwen has made it into the manor, but then gives Vex a shocked look when the Dragonborn tells Robin about the potential transformation. …perhaps it is better if Robin knows what he is up against, but he still hopes to save the man rather then destroy him. “I want to make it clear that it is not our mission to kill Simon. That is a last resort. He seems to have fallen prey to some sort of darkness, though he may be at fault, that doesn’t change the fact that he is still worth saving.”
He pauses nodding when Robin says he isn’t proud of all the things he has done, “Well, while I cannot speak for my companions, I will say that I respect you for what you have done. As it has been said, desperate times call for desperate measures, and there is such a thing as doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. As long as you don’t make a habit of doing those wrong things, I don’t think it makes you a bad person. I agree that your men should be allowed to return to their families.”He glances at Gilded, hoping for the paladin’s input.
Drezmir raises an eyebrow when Robin winks at Jess…is he…flirting with her? He glances at Jess, relieved that she doesn’t seem phased by whatever Robin is trying to accomplish. He might not know Jess as well as some of his other comrades, but he will not hesitate to step in if she starts looking uncomfortable.
