“Me? Serious? I am a ray sunshine.”He said almost monotone, still not sure if Breda was a serial killer or not. “And about goblins being edible, well, I heard once about a mine collapsing around Phandalin. Miners got stuck inside for so long that had to eat one of their one to survive. Apparently, they drew lots and the guy who suggested the idea ended become food. The judges of the Lord’s Alliance were more lost than the son a ***** on father’s day, trying to figure if the guys should be condemned for murder or not. So I think any meat not rotten can go down the throat if necessary.”
Radu wouldn’t be surprised if he had already tasted some goblin under the full moon. Not that he would remember. Not that he would want to remember.
“The boss.” He said grasping the forearm of the elf, looking for the feeling of a dagger while at the same time letting the man check if the Blood Hunter carried a hidden weapon of his own. It was a way for trained warriors saying without words and beyond doubts – Check my arm. I have no ill intent or hidden weapon. “Radu Ashford. I am sure we will all have plenty of trouble, but I will also do everything I can to deal with this trouble.” He then turned to Breda. “I know it's hard to believe, but I wasn’t hired for my optimism.”
Notes: The mine incident is just a reference to Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 (a flight in 1972 that ended with the plane crashing on the Andes where the survivors, in order to not starve to death, committed cannibalism) but adapted to the fact that the Forgotten Realms don't really have, well, planes. The survivors were judged and it was quite the discussion if their actions constituted crime or not. So what Radu said is not canon.
Rosie smiles and nods at Burn as she arrives to the smithy, then also introduces herself to the fellow at the forge. "Hello there. I'm Rosie. I was also looking to get some work done here if possible. For now I just need my rapier sharpened. But I'm also very curious to see what you plan on making Burn. Those marbles of yours were quite a wonder. You go ahead and I'll entertain myself looking over the shelves here."
Rosie moves over to study what sort of weaponry, both complete and unfinished, is stored here and also peruses through some of the rolled-up parchment.
At first the conversation with Bruno seems to be more comfortable for Torwin, "Oh! Same? A-as me? Umm... d-do-does your cousin hail f-f-from an arid re-region such a-as here? I-I-I c-come from a-an area like th-this. Umm... d-do you think... umm... the reptilians might have evolved as a result of being underground until now? M-ma-maybe a n-new species cou-could be discovered? T-that sounds really interesting actually. Perhaps even new tribes of my people? A-a-according to some old text and lore there's a possibility that lizardfolk were created by the gods to p-p-protect the land. Not that it's proven a-at all b-but often we can be territorial and pr-protective of our homes. Many possibilities have been discussed over the ages to our origins which I f-f-find fascinating to read all those theories." Torwin notes down a few things in on of his notebooks like he had a sudden idea. The notebook used seems to be a journal of sorts. Then the lizardman goes back to talking with Bruno. As the bullman reveals they were just grabbing a random book Torwin seems to get fearful again. Where interest and curiosity was there is a sudden dread like he did something wrong "Oh.... I-I'm s-s-sorry I s-s-shouldn't of a-as-assumed a-a-and r-r-rambled. I-I-I ju-ju-just l-like books... I r-read some of h-h-his before... m-m-many bo-books on... c-cr-creation...myths." He kind of tapers off with talking like he's forcing himself to stop. He looks down at the ground and kind of scooches down like he's trying to vanish from existence. As Fifi asks to take the book on monsters and such Torwin seems interested but also a bit startled that she asked.
Angus: "Well then! Nice to meet you, 'Burn'. Sorry to disappoint, but I am not the blacksmith. My name's Angus. Angus Klage. I'm here for the expedition." (to Rosie) "Nice to meet you as well Rosie. There's a sharpening stone over on that desk over there. I can sharpen your rapier for you if you like. You must be exhausted from the trip here!"
Angus speaks in an amused tone, never ceasing to smile. After introducing himself, he initiates two handshakes at once, holding his arms out to Burn and Rosie, waiting for them to accept.
Rosie, searching the shop, finds 2 throwing hammers, a javelin, and a shortsword. All the other weapons are either broken or half-completed, including longswords, battleaxes, and a flail. Among the scrolls she finds a procedure for the smelting of adamantine.
Radu (in the Kitchen)
Breda's smile vanishes as Radu tells her the story of the miners. Now scowling, she doesn't say another word.
As Radu accepts Klage's handshake, he notices that the old elf seems quite familiar with his "warrior's greeting", as if he'd dealt with dozens of people just like the blood hunter. There is nothing up Klage's sleeve. At least, not literally.
Klage: "Well, that's quite the story! Terrifying, isn't it? The things we're capable of in desperate times. I'm glad to finally meet you, Radu. Now, about that alchemist's fire!"
Letting go of Radu's arm, Klage walks over to the pantry door, beckoning for Radu to follow him. His speech, appearance, and mannerisms evoked the image of the kind, old, fatherly mentor figure common in popular fiction Radu had heard of.
Breda ignores Radu's last comment, having returned to chopping up vegetables. Something he said must have affected her.
Fifi and Torwin (in the Library)
Bruno thinks for a second before answering Fifi's question.
Bruno: "I can't say for certain. These books are, I presume, Mr. Klage's personal collection. In conclusion, it would be best you obtain his permission to borrow a book. I have a feeling he would gladly allow it."
(to Torwin) "My cousin comes from Thay, like myself. He chose the path of a gladiator. He's gained an impressive following in the arenas down there. As for the creatures of the chasm, evolution does not seem unlikely in the slightest! There will without doubt be something new to see." (when he mentions lizardfolk) "Hmmmm I've heard of such theories, but they had slipped my mind until now. Perhaps in our travels, we will be given time to search for evidence!" (when hearing Torwin's nervous apology) "No need to apologize, my friend! I too am an enjoyer of literature."
Geraine (in the Dining Room)
Emilia: (in reaction to Geraine mentioning the others) "I see. I look forward to meeting your acquaintances." (when Geraine discusses the house) "I'm glad you like it! Father had it built exactly three weeks ago, specifically for this expedition. You see, this isn't his main outpost. It's more like a "greeting site" for you expedition volunteers. Father had been here all month, but my brother and I only got here yesterday. And yes, I am here for the adventure."
She tosses her head and smirks.
???: "As if your dad's gonna let his preciousdaughter anywhere near something dangerous! Heh, we'll probably have to be your bodyguards."
The dragonborn's tone is practically dripping with arrogance. He grins mischieviously.
Emilia scoffs.
Emilia: "Oh please! Child endangerment is practically his middle name!"
"Klage? Oh are you Eduan's boy? Isn't that nice! A family affair out here at the edge of the world. I would have liked to bring my own boy out here but he just got his apprenticeship at the bakery in Elturel, and he's not really the adventuring type. I feel bad about leaving him behind but I told him, I've got to have my own life now too. Tell me Angus, how does it feel following your Pa out here? Oh and yes, dear, if you wouldn't mind sharpening this rapier that would be lovely, thank you." Rosie hands over her rapier to Angus. "And what about you Burn? Are your folks still around?"
Not having any particular skills in Smithing, Rosie sits down and looks up at Burn and Angus intently. She seems quite content to sit back and watch them work on whatever they are making, offering praise and pride here and there, even though she has very little understanding of the process herself.
Geraine ponders at this exchange curiously as they exchange comments. "It seems Klage has gathered quite the combination of personalities for this expedition. One might think the risk of malice within this group was welcomed in his planning.."
"Yes, I see. Well, it is again a pleasure. I look forward to getting to know you all in time, and I do hope I can expect to see you at dinner. In the meantime, it has been a long journey of which I would not mind some time to brush off the dust of the road, so-to-say.. I am going to finish my quick tour of the house and get cleaned up. Unless you would like to accompany me, I will leave you in the grace and favor of the Keeper of the Golden Sun. May the light of Amaunator shine upon you."
Geraine bows slightly, turns and begins to make his way to the library.
Burn reaches out to accept Angus's arm and nods. She listens to Rosie's question and answers without looking over "Never knew my mother. Apparently, I never knew my father either."
She begins collecting the iron scraps on the ground. "I was raised by my stepfather. He's gone now too. Still have my uncle though." She places the scraps on the anvil, walks back to Angus, and points to the metal sphere, "May I?" Without waiting for an answer, she picks it up and inspects it, checking to see if she can use it as a cast for her project.
Still staring at the sphere, "Oh and I am looking to cast a cannonball. Except I am the cannon."
(ABILITY CHECK: Attempt to create a cannonball. Rolled 18 in PM with DM)
He followed Klage to the pantry, conscious of the change in Breda’s attitude. At that point Radu was used to causing this kind of reaction on people. On the last years he had all but acquired the gift of bothering people with his words, causing discomfort or just plain anger. The Lycans used to say it was hard to be mindful of manners while dealing with the rage, pain and fear of the curse. The damn bite really does change what someone is.
“Was she one of the miners or the familiar of one of them?” He asked when they were far enough that the woman could not hear them talking. Maybe the eaten guy was her husband, the Blood Hunter considered. “If she was just let her know that I didn’t speak of it to mess with her and I am sorry for bringing bad memories back.”He said with the sincerity of someone who knew a thing or two about being on her place. “So, what is the withdraw threshold for ingredients?”
If he could, Radu would like to make more than one fire. Only the gods knew how much of the thing they would need down there and his experience the gods didn’t care very much about what happened to mortal.
@DM How much of ingredients could Radu get on the pantry?
Fifi is pleased by Bruno's answer and looks happily at VGtM that's currently in Torwin's possession. As Bruno and Torwin continue to converse, Fifi recalls Burn's inquiry about the Apex Dawn. The satyr returns to the bookshelves to see if she can find any literature on the group.
Torwin sees Fifi begin to search the shelves again as Bruno assures Torwin they like books too. A bit tentative at first, Torwin seems to be cautious but likes the idea they read too, "R-r-really? No-normally.... Ummm... you're n-n-not going to... umm... n-nevermind. I-I-I like reading too. I-i-it's fun to learn... to sh-share in-information. D-do y-y-you h-have a pr-preferred t-topic?" Torwin seems a bit shocked at their own audacity to ask Bruno a question and seems to back track a bit as they suddenly say "Y-y-you don't h-have to a-answer. I s- sh-should p-pr-probably read th-this book.... ummm.... I-I d-don't get many chances t-to talk with ad-adventurers. W-wh-what would y-y-you a-ad-advise for someone n-new to it?" Torwin seems a bit scared but also hesitates a bit as if torn between being scared and wanting to talk more. The scholarly lizard seems intrigued to learn from Bruno and get some pointers on what Torwin should know for adventuring. Most of the books they have read on guidance for adventuring has mentioned experience is a far better teacher.
Emilia: "I look forward to knowing you as well. Me and these two were going to play a few rounds of chess. Feel free to join after you get situated."
The library consists of a single wall of bookcases, with some desks and lecterns scattered about. Opposite from the bookshelves is a long sofa. There is a noticeable lack of dust in the library. Like the outside, the inside of the house feels very new. At the back of the room is a door leading into what is presumably the parlor that Sheska mentioned earlier.
Two of your traveling companions are here. Torwin is talking with a large minotaur sitting on the sofa, who seems to be giving the lizardfolk a life lesson. Fifi is searching the bookshelves, seemingly unsatisfied with what she's found.
Torwin & Fifi
As Fifi scours the books again, she does not find the information she wanted. She does, however, come across a book of fey songs and poetry.
Bruno chuckles at Torwin's questions.
Bruno: "I like many subjects, but history is of particular interest to me. As for adventuring advice, I myself was only a bodyguard before I joined the expedition. I suppose I would say that it's important to never show fear. The best way to avoid a fight is to make your opponent sure they will lose, and what better way to do that than to stare them down without flinching?"
Your traveling companion, the cleric of Amauntor, Geraine, enters the room.
Rosie & Burn
Angus: (to Rosie) "Yep! That's me. My sister and I arrived yesterday. She was in the dining room last I checked. Father's taken us on his trips before, but this will be our first official expedition."
He gently takes Rosie's rapier and goes towards the sharpening station.
(As Burn grabs the sphere, Angus protests.) "Wait! That's my father's. I'm not sure what it is, but I'm fairly certain it has some sort of magic in it. Before you arrived, I was trying to figure out how it worked."
Radu
Klage appears somber for a moment.
Klage: "No need to apologize, especially to me. You had no way of knowing beforehand. Yes, she was close to one of those unfortunate miners. Her brother, in fact."
The storage room is lined with shelves and drawers filled with various supplies and seemingly random knick-knacks. Grain, flour, spices, more dried meat, jars of oil and lard, bundles of rope, books, crates of fruit and vegetables, and even some wine.
As you enter, Klage's serious tone immediately vanishes and he walks briskly towards a shelf of drawers to the left and starts rummaging through the vials and small boxes.
Klage: "Hmm they should be... here we are! Pine resin and sulfur." (holding up two labeled clay jars, grinning) "I don't mind how much you take. You should be able to make about four vials of the stuff."

Without a word, she hands the sphere back to Angus and continues her search for the materials needed to create her cannonball. (Skill Check: Investigation6)
"It never bothered me though... Not having a mother. It just was what it was. My fa.. my stepfather and uncle taught me everything I needed to know."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Geraine scans the room while making his way toward the bookshelves. Scanning the shelves he looks for any books regarding law and/or history of Anauroch, any material relating to Amaunator with a quick but intentional scan.
Investigation Check:16
If any material is found of interest he will spend some time to thumb through it. If not, he will make his leave of the library to head up to a vacant room to wash up before looking to catch up with Sheska.
Geraine will not interrupt the conversation or Fifi's reading. However, he will not ignore them if they bring conversation to him.
Torwin seems to deflate when advised not to show fear. They sound a bit defeated as they say "I-I was afraid t-that would be the case." They seem a bit dispirited as but they pull up Volo's book and seems to cheer themselves up by adding with quite a bit of stuttering, "I-I w-w-would l-like t-t-to ta-talk more a-about h-h-history with y-you. I-I think I need to m-m-make sure I'm not a b-burden though." unfolds the guide from Volo and plops it down in front of himself as well as pulls out a notebook of some kind ready to take notes. They seem to gain a bit of confidence as they say, "I c-can still help t-though. I'm an e-excellent amanuensis as well as r-r-researcher. You c-can count on me to learn what we n-need." The lizardfolk rarely shows pride but in this case they seem to have a little bit. They begin to read when Geraine walks in and begins to search the shelves for various books. Torwin looks up at them but doesn't say anything and goes back to taking notes as best they can. A look of determination on their face as they study.
Investigation: 15 to learn as much as they can on subterranean species and environments
“True, but I still wanted to apologize.” He knew better than anyone what is to be remembered of a trauma brusquely. “Not to directly to her, at least not for now, because I imagine she won’t be happy seeing or hearing from me for a while and I can’t really blame her for that.”
Radu was happy or as happy as Radu could be, when they entered the pantry and the elf showed him the ingredients. In a shelf. It were small moments like those that made he think that some god or another had at least a shadow of humor. Good humor. Four vials. He said with the voice of his mind while taking the pots. I like the sound of that.
“I will take it all. Should be able to make at least one vial before going to sleep.” And that made him remember. “By the way, I should find accommodation on a room before the dinner.”
At this point he expected the rest of his traveling companions would have their own beds chosen. All but Geraine, since the cleric was accompanying the Blood Hunter until the kitchen. Whatever is free will be a hundred times better than anything at least on the first leg of the expedition. A thought he put behind taking the jars and, if Klage does not speak with him further, leaving to find a room.
Rosie sits and watches Angus sharpening the rapier while listening to Burn.
"We are never raised entirely in a vacuum: we are shaped by those around us even if they aren't traditional family. Your uncle sounds like a fine man. Why? Because you seem like a fine person to me Burn, the little I've come to know you over these past few days. Here, let me help you find something for your little cannonball project. What do you need? Just something spherical? Mind you don't get too caught up now, we've got dinner with Mr Klage shortly."
Getting up, Rosie helps Burn look around for materials.
'Burn' felt like Bernadette for the first time since her stepfa... her 'dad' was alive. Her uncle was more of a mentor than a parent, so she hadn't heard anything resembling a compliment about anything except her craftsmanship in years. Given her fair complexion and the auburn locks framing her face, it was obvious to anyone looking that Burn was blushing, so she turned her back to Rosie and walked swiftly out of the room. Over her shoulder, she remarked "That's a good point. I'll try again later." Her footsteps fell heavy and quick. Already out of earshot, she let escape a muffled, "Thanks"
Geraine finds nothing of use in the library. In fact, it looks like the books were someone's personal collection rather than a library. The subjects of the books are too specific. Adventure novels, cookbooks, Sword Coast history books, a book on the culture of Chultan goblins, and a couple mystery stories. Nothing of use for Underdark travel whatsoever. He notices that Torwin is holding a copy onto of a book titled Volo's Guide To Monsters, so at least there was one useful book here.
Heading back towards the stairs, Geraine still senses no magical presence.
Reaching the second floor, he finds that it is one long hallway that encompasses the entirety of the "L"-shaped second floor, lined all the way down with doors. There are eighteen doors in total, spaced about 10 feet apart.
At the very end of the hall, at the equivalent of the "L" shape's highest point, there is a nineteenth door built differently from the others. It looks thicker, heavier, and is carved with ornate plant designs, unlike the other plain doors.
Geraine detects no magical presence from any of the bedrooms, both occupied and unoccupied. However, as he nears this final door, his spell senses something.
Not a magical presence, but a lack thereof. The radius of his spell is unable to penetrate this nineteenth door and the walls around it. How odd.
Fifi & Torwin
As Fifi flips through the tome, she finds that she knows many of songs, poems, and stories contained within. The book is beautifully illustrated with flowers, trees, and the occasional pixie.
Bruno: (to Torwin) "Don't worry! I'm sure this expedition will toughen you up! I'd love to discuss historical topics with you at some point, and I'd like to take a look at your research eventually."
Torwin's Investigation Check: To fully absorb the knowledge contained in the book, you must spend an hour or more studying it (can be done during a rest). Doing so grants you advantage on Nature and Arcana checks made to identify and recall information about monsters.
Radu
Klage seems more interested in the contents of the shelves than Radu's reasons for wanting to give Breda some space.
Klage: "Well, do as you will. I won't make you apologize." (turning to face him again) "Now, concerning the sleeping quarters, just find a room with an open door. I've instructed the others to keep their doors closed once they've chosen a room, so any room with an open door should be vacant. I myself will be heading up to my quarters to retrieve something."
Rosie & Burn
Rosie and Burn had managed to find several strips of metal lying around the floor and worktables in plain sight. Surely enough material to forge a cannonball. However, so as not to be late for dinner, it would be best to set to work after the meal.
Angus has finished sharpening Rosie's rapier, and gently holds it out to her.
“Me? Serious? I am a ray sunshine.” He said almost monotone, still not sure if Breda was a serial killer or not.
“Was she one of the miners or the familiar of one of them?” He asked when they were far enough that the woman could not hear them talking. Maybe the eaten guy was her husband, the Blood Hunter considered. “If she was just let her know that I didn’t speak of it to mess with her and I am sorry for bringing bad memories back.” He said with the sincerity of someone who knew a thing or two about being on her place.

Ro Aleron (Ro the Red) -> Illithid, Wizard 8 (Chronugist) // AURYN
Geraine
Emilia:
"I look forward to knowing you as well.
Bruno:
"I like many subjects, but history is of particular interest to me.
Angus:
(to Rosie) "Yep!
Klage:
"No need to apologize, especially to me.
Klage:
"Hmm they should be... here we are! Pine resin and sulfur." (holding up two labeled clay jars, grinning) "I don't mind how much you take. You should be able to make about four vials of the stuff."
"Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer."
Without a word, she hands the sphere back to Angus and continues her search for the materials needed to create her cannonball. (Skill Check: Investigation 6)
"It never bothered me though... Not having a mother. It just was what it was. My fa.. my stepfather and uncle taught me everything I needed to know."
Fifi delights in her find, "Oh just wonderful!" The satyr begins to immerse herself into the book.
Ro Aleron (Ro the Red) -> Illithid, Wizard 8 (Chronugist) // AURYN
Geraine scans the room while making his way toward the bookshelves. Scanning the shelves he looks for any books regarding law and/or history of Anauroch, any material relating to Amaunator with a quick but intentional scan.
Investigation Check: 16

Investigation: 11
Geraine
Bruno:
(to Torwin) "Don't worry!
Klage:
"Well, do as you will.
Angus:
"Here you go, ma'am."
"Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer."
Geraine approaches the door and inspects it closer, careful not to touch it in any way.
Investivation Check: 4
He makes a mental note and turns to find a room to clean up before proceeding to meet with Sheska.
