You join the queue for food, which is moving fairly quickly as the giff server doles out portions of breakfast. The other students in line are chatting with varying degrees of enthusiasm.
[Anyone who want to can make a check to pick up on the scuttlebutt. Make any kind of check you can justify; examples might be perception to eavesdrop, investigation to quiz another student, or straight charisma to join in with a chatting group. You might learn different things with different checks...]

Eris doesn't know what a scuttlebutt is so she'll swoop into a conversation since she's eager to learn more. Charisma check: 19
If anyone's willing to talk to her. "Nice to meet you! My name is Eris! I notice you guys talking about something. Is it okay if I listen on to your conversation?"

Princess starts making rounds of table trying to be everyone’s friend but focusing her efforts on persuading people that she is eminently trustworthy and someone they would like to confide in.
Brynn Wisefire eyes are wide in wonderment, though he is taking in everything with a calm studied manner.
"Greetings, it's a pleasure to meet all of you. May Annwn watch over you now and in the next world. I'm from a world where all of this", he gestures around, "is not even a dream. Before coming here, I was trained in the monastery of Cymer as a, um, I think you would call it a lawkeeper."
Zoide overhears the students in front of you griping that today's breakfast is once again the cook's signature dish, something he has never named but the cadets refer to as "gunpowder chowder".
Eris barrels in on a small group of cadets who are discussing yesterday's attack; one apparently believes, as Eris herself has heard, that a group of new recruits attacked the academy's head, Mirt the Merciless; another is arguing that while it seems certain that some recruits were involved somehow, the details are unclear and they can't say whether the group were the attackers or not. As Eris, herself a new recruit, asks to listen in, they eye her suspiciously and change the subject slightly, mentioning that there are apparently at least two groups of new recruits being given their first training assignment today.
Meanwhile, Princess convinces the cadets behind you to let you hold her place in the queue, and goes around the room chatting up several of the tables. At one table, another group of new recruits are nervously speculating about what their training assignment will be; another table, of older cadets, has heard that apparently your two groups of recruits are going to be combined to create some kind of competitive exercise on the Simulation Deck. Most of the rest are talking about the thefts that have recently occurred, including apparently during the attack yesterday; the thieves have yet to be caught, and seem to be targeting instructors now: as well as various Realmspace navigational charts, one of the thefts saw Petty Officer Ryeback's quarters robbed of a custom pistol.
Once she finishes with the last table “Oi av a gud ornin mates oi’ll kep ain oy out fer tricky digits, ain ye lot kep yer oys on ye trainin. Gots ta av ye kin prou o ye neh Lizza?” She finishes talking to the gnome trainee at the last table and heads back to the group.
”Gon av a roit tuckrin time o it t’day mates. Eard we gon be in some boujie trainin at de sims t’day ifin oi eard propa.” She says as she comes back to the group in line.
(Hey have a good morning mates, I’ll keep an eye out for tricky digits [thieves], and you lot keep your eyes on your training. Got to have your family be proud of you yeah Lizza?.
Going to have a right tiring time of it today guys. Heard we are going to be in a fancy training at the sims today if I heard properly.)
Da"Kal feels a level of comfort from all the voices and thoughts buzzing about. The hustle and bustle remind her of hive life. She doesn"T try to pry any information from anybody, just finds a seat with her friends to enjoy the food and company.

"............anybody got any potatoes? We could drop a potato in each hole an' see which ones get viciously mauled by horrible monsters?"
Eris couldn't help but perk her cat ears as she overhears the cadets talking about the recent events. Somebody attacked the academy's head? And it was a student! Oh gosh! Who in the cat heavens would... She glances at the three cadets (Da'Kal, Icarus and Zoide) that she was previously introduced to. Surely those three couldn't have been the ones right? They wouldn't dare to- no... it can't be them for sure. She takes out a little notepad from her uniform pocket and quickly wrote down a note to herself saying Mission update: forget about gathering more data now. Track down culprit(s) first if necessary.
As she finishes writing her note down the cadets immediately change the subject before she could even bring it up to discuss. Hey no fair! Don't just change the subject just because I wanted to chat with you! Meanies! What if this problem persists? Who's going to handle the matters if you guys aren't going to do so? She was going to blurt that out but held it in and decided to play along for now. "Oh yes! I'm one of the new cadets here, but I don't really know which group I'm assigned to. I also don't really know my way around this facility either, but do you know who can I talk to get some... uh... firearms? It's just I signed up for a different course than most other cadets."She asks as she eyes tenaciously at all the different, unknown life forms she's conversing with.
[So, you're asking the people suspicious that you might be one of the group that they think might have attacked the academy head... where to get firearms. :)]
The cadet that was saying the newcomers attacked Mirt just eyes you suspiciously, but the one that was pointing out they don't know what really happened—a person shaped blob that looks like it poured itself into a uniform, which you remember being told is called a plasmoid—looks at the insignia on your red shirt and replies, "Oh you're Corps as well? There's actually quite a few of us! I'd much much rather be up on deck than stuck down on the helm—full sails, stars in the sky, and wind on your membrane! I'm Pffred," he extends a pseudopod to shake your hand. "If you need equipment, just go see Mister Blip the quartermaster, on the level just below this one."
[Out-of-character, in my recap for the new folks, I skipped over the bit in episode one where the orientation activities introduced the stores, because it wasn't super interesting; in-character it may be that you never got to it since the academy was disrupted by the attack on Mirt. Basically the stores have all the weapons, armor, adventuring gear and tools from the PHB available for purchase, plus as per our PM conversation, you can get that renaissance pistol from the DMG for a 50g deposit [repeating here so other folk are on the same page]]
You reach the front of the queue (just ahead of you, Pffred received his meal with noticeably more enthusiasm than his companions); the giff, skin glistening with a light sheen of sweat from the heat of the kitchens, is wearing a name tag that identifies him as Petty Officer Winston Ryeback. As the cook spoons out serves of a porridge consisting of your choice of deep-fried meat or beans, held together with sticky starches, he loudly complains, "I 'ear one of youse asking about guns? I 'ad me a lovely pistol, full custom job, real snaplock, none of your newfangled doglock; a real beaut she was. If any of ye find the right cracksman that nicked 'er, you bring 'em to me, yea?"
(You're not sure where Da'Kal found the green thing she was eating... possibly it was some kind of pest?)
(Yep, much like Eris! Absolutely clueless when it comes to reading certain situations; Guess there maybe a drawback for being too friendly XD. No I just wanted to convey to them that she's just new and has no idea on what happened. She's just trying to gather information before she can move in to resolve this. I actually had another method of approaching this scenario but when I started to type it the method faded out of my brain for some reason and didn't come back. That's why I came up with this last minute since I didn't want to leave everyone hanging. Sorry if it sounded awkward or something. P.s: It still didn't come back to this day.)
"If you need equipment, just go see Mister Blip the quartermaster, on the level just below this one."
"Oh really? Well thank you so much, umm..." What the heck was his name again???? "Piff-a-red!" She replies as she shakes his hand, after which she grabs her weird-looking lunch and heads over to a table to sit by herself to eat, taking yet another private notes in the process. She's itching to solve this, gather more data and then report back to the captain on what she found but even then... Tsk! What makes everyone think that I was involved in that attack?! I don't even know my way around, let alone have access to those upper class areas so there was no way in cat heavens could I stumble across somewhere private! Besides, I'm more suspicious of my own teammates the most... maybe captain was right saying that I'm unable to befriend others here. Oh well...
She was hesitant on eating the meal first, but tenaciously dipped her spoon into the porridge. And took a small sip of it. Wasn't the best thing she's had in the universe but was certainly good enough for her to purr softly and sway her tail. She slowly sips it down to savour it. It reminded her of somewhere else when a group of young people cooked something similar for her before she came here.

"Nah, I came up belowdecks, 'ardly settin' foot on a rock 'til th' Old Wolf 'ired me to run the kitchens 'ere. Dunno who's bin nicking stuff, but if I get me mitts on 'em, I'll shove it where not a single sun shines." Ryeback motions for you to keep moving, and as you all take your breakfast and head for the tables, you hear him muttering while serving the next cadets in line, "Collected the skymetal for the stock inlay meself, I did..."
By the time you've collected your food, only one table has room for all of you. Aside from Eris, there is one other person seated at it, a human with light olive skin and short, disheveled black hair framing a round face which is currently deeply buried in a book. Every so often he pauses anxiously to make a note or take a spoonful of chowder. Glancing between his notes and the book, he notices you looking for seats and gestures for you all to join him. "I'm Miken, Miken Haverstance," he introduces himself. "Please pardon me if I'm a little distracted," he indicates his studies, "I'm... I'm a bit nervous about the training we're going to be doing."
Eris becomes startled for a second as Miken sits on the same table as her and lets off a tiny squeak. "Oh! Hi there! To be honest I almost didn't noticed you until you spoke!"She slurps down the last of her chowder. "I'm Eris! Nice to meet you Miken!"She then curiously looks over his shoulder at the books he's looking over and shakes her tail in awe. "Woah! You must be one smart boy! I'll admit your notes look more detailed and neater than all of my ones! Is that for the training thing we're supposed to attend later?" In her head: I must say, his attitude reminds me of one particular human I liked on another planet. Oh the happy memories we shared together whilst I visited there! Ahh!!!
