The long break has made things a bit disjointed; so I think it's best if we assume everyone took a short rest.
Frandal's arrow flies straight and true, striking the massive beast in the neck as it descends upon Thoradin and Xellos. Xellos responds by casting Fireball, sending a line of flame into the dragon's face (38 fire damage on a failed save). Thoradin immediately utters the words to Banishment, hoping to send the monster to another place altogether.
(DEX save for shadow dragon: 20)
(CHA save for shadow dragon: 23)
Thoradin's spell fails altogether, and the shadow dragon evades the full effect of Xellos' fireball. Just as the beast sets its massive clawed feet on the ground it violently exhales a cloud of dust and ash that envelopes the cleric and the sorcerer.
(CON save for Xellos: 15)
(CON save for Thoradin: 13)
Both Thoradin and Xellos are overwhelmed by the effects of the dragon's breath; consumed by terrible coughing fits, they are incapacitated temporarily.

Ozum continues toward solid ground to drop of Frandal while avoiding the dragon and not grouping with allies. (Using dash for max movement. How far to drop off Frandal safely?)
(Ozum, by using dash, can reach the other side of the chasm and drop off Frandal. That distance is roughly 120'.)
Xellos, incapacitated by the cloud of ash and dust, is unable to make any sort of defense or attack against the dragon. The dragon creeps forward, looming over the choking sorcerer and cleric, and with each of its massive front claws reaches forward in an attempt to grapple Xellos and Thoradin.
Grappling attempt with left claw and advantage versus Xellos:
With a nearly miraculous piece of acrobatic movement, Xellos evades the dragon's attempt to pin him to the ground. Thoradin, however, is immediately pinned beneath the dragon's right claw. The dwarf is unharmed, but he is wholly unable to move. The dragon, with a booming, terrifying voice, speaks in Common. "Desist! Hold your weapons! As of yet, I have harmed none of you! I do not seek a fight. I seek freedom."

Arissa says to the dragon "My apologies, One-that-seeks-Freedom. This place is filled with terrible things, and we presumed you we one of these. Of course we were wrong, for which I apologize most profusely. Perhaps, as we are all prepared to cooperate, you could kindly release the Master Dwarf."

The dragon straightens its neck, lowers its head, and brings its nostrils within a few feet of Arissa. Its massive, unblinking silvery-grey eyes stare directly into the bard's. Its mouth opens and out pour these words, slowly and thoughtfully, "This dwarf... is my guaranteeeee, half-elf. Free him, and I have only your word. And it is by the words of a man that I suffer in this place. Words of the two-legged, WHAT ARE THEY WORTH?"
Arissa adopts a position that emphasizes that she has no will to fight this being. "My words are all I am, without them I am nothing. This form is fleeting, a blink in time. My words shall be eternal. I do not have the luxury of wasting them, there is nothing more precious to me. You must understand that in giving you my word, I wrench out my innermost self to present it to you, a gem covered in the blood of my soul. There is no greater gift I can give. Yet still you may imprison my friend, if it puts you at ease. What further service do you require of us, One-That-Seeks-Freedom, to unbind these words of man that hold you so? If it lies within our grasp, we shall be honoured to do it."

"Your words...a blood-covered gem? A gift? Poetic...powerful....yes." responds the massive beast.
Then, turning its gaze to Frandal, it speaks again. "What of you, elf? Odd it issss, that you would value a dwarf. Do you claim to speak such words of weight?"
”I am bound by the words that I speak, and I do not waste them not my life with lies. When someone lies, part of the world dies. Release him and we will talk and do not attack you unless you attack us in return. The lies of a human brought you here. Perhaps the truth od a half elf, and elf, a dwarf and their companions could set you free. But I cannot make such promises yet... we need to know more. “
"Nor do eagles call Shadowfell home,"remarks the dragon as it eyes Sariel and Fargim. "Yes, there is a strange story standing before me. Two eagles. Four two-leggers."
"This place is not our home, and we are searching for a way out. How long have you been here? You must be really strong not have succumb to its influence... " Frandal looks around "the sadness here is... hard to overcome"
"Years have I been here. Years, elf. And this place has changed me. No longer do I breathe ice but ash and dust. No longer do my scales shine like polished silver. Dull, faded, and gray I have become. Most troublesome of all is the despair. Inescapable despair."
The dragon pauses, raises its head, and gazes in the direction of the dark chasm that the party just crossed over.
"Not from that chasm Elder One" replies Frandal " Frandal Silvereyes is my name and once again we apologize for beign agressive when we saw you, but as you said, this place seems to had changed you, and just a few hours ago we had to fight some... dark reflections of ourselves, so we doubt of our senses. "
To enphasizes his words, he puts his bow on his back.
" Most important of where do we come, for I am not sure we could trace our steps back on this place... is that were we are going. We are trying to prevent some undead to reach our own plane from a rift on this one. A hard battle awaits ahead of us, and we aren't certain of the result of it. But if we fail, I am afraid that escaping this plane would not give you, or any of us, any comfort, for they will unleash worse things upon our land... "
"I see. Shadow...," replies the dragon, seemingly lost in thought. "...It is what I am becoming and what you are fighting."
The dragon then methodically studies each member of the party, almost as if it is trying to solve some riddle in its mind. It then speaks again. "These kaegro...these undead...who is their captain? My time here has afforded me much knowledge of this place and its beings."
Xellos and Thoradin have finally shaken off the effects of the dragon's breath of ash and dust. Thoradin uses the corner of his cloak to wipe his face and eyes, and Xellos takes a long drink of water, trying to clear his mouth and throat.
Sariel, having now returned to her true form, responds to the dragon's question. "Their captain is a dark knight. His name we do not know, but the one who seems to do most of his bidding is, unfortunately, someone we do know: Arconius."
Frandal opens his mouth but closes it again. Then he opens it again looking at Sariel but closes before speaking again. He then turns to the dragon again.
“Pardon me? Kubrithani? We were fighting Kubrithani? The Kubrithani? “ he asks to Sariel “ We cannot allow him to take all the Fragments. “ he turns to the dragon again.
” If we walk together we could reach the rift between our worlds together. I do not know if ours was your original plane of origin, but from there it would be easier for you to go home Trapped One. As long as you do not let the despair take the better of you and you take an oath not to harm our lands, people and friends I think I can speak for my allies that we could help you reach the exit of this dreadful place.”

As Sariel, the great eagle, swoops in to land near the shadow dragon, Arissa attempts to strike blindness/deafness into the massive beast.
Utilizing its legendary resistance, the shadow dragon succeeds on the saving throw.
Round 1 has concluded; Frandal's and Ozum's turns are next, followed by Xellos' (DM) and the dragon.

Frandal notches another arrow and aims towards one of the dragon-s eye.
“ Then release my friend and introduce yourself. One that Seeks Freedom. If you don’t... “ he tenses the bowstring a little bit more.
