This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
As the group converses a small cloaked figure approaches, their hood up mostly to protect from the rain. He just steps into the carriage pulling his hood down to reveal his short black hair. From an initial look it is easy to tell that he is a physically unimpressive human strength wise. His skinny neck and frame showing his lack of physical activity, along with his heavy breathing.
“My apologies, I got lost due to the darkness.” He says in a timid voice as he steps on and looks at the crest taking his seat.
From your time in the city you have seen the crest before you recognize it as the Vardell family crest. The Vardell’s are one of the wealthiest and most influential families in the city. You remember hearing that they almost exclusively own all the iron mines in the nearby mountains which is their primary source of wealth. Like most families of wealth you have heard stories of them, some praising them for their generosity and positive impact on the city. Other stories paint them as opportunistic and suggest that at times they may have stepped on the toes in the acquiring of wealth.
"Indeed sir, even having been here for many years it is easy to lose ones way at night."
Hearing a question from Gerold Shaw pauses for a moment as if pondering his words.
"Yes you are to go ahead and begin the investigation, I will be behind you shortly with your benefactor. It is not my place to say more however I will say that beyond a well paid task you may also think of this as a test of abilities. Now if there are no further questions I will bid you farewell till we meet at Greybrook."
Belnum takes this moment to study the others in the carriage with him, taking notes as to who might be able to hold their own in a fight if worse comes to worst on our travels. Then glances at Shaw before asking
"I do believe the name of our benefactor has failed to be given. As a general rule I do like to know who I'm doing business with. Now I'm going to assume that they are a member of the Vardell family judging by their crest here?"
(ooc: last question from me, I'm good to progress with this)
You arrive early in the dawn in Graybrook it's overcast and a light rain is falling. As you arrive in your carriage you receive nothing but strange stares from the few villagers you pass working on their farms. A strange tension grips you as you enter the village proper made even worse by the lack of wildlife that should be present. There is an unshakable feeling that something is not right here. The village is quite spread out as you might expect from farmland. You arrive at the inn which appears to be nothing more than a bare bones tavern with a singular room for any locals that drink to much . You see located in the center of the village two general good shops and a farmers stand. The temple which stands out amongst the other buildings due to its older stonework design is located nearby too. Lastly there is a stable area located in the center for individuals to keep animals.
The carriage stops and the driver says he will await at the stable with the carriage and lets you off.
Veyran has no immediate reaction when the villagers start staring at the group. He’s used to feeling like the odd man out. Hopefully his coworkers don’t mind too much the attention.
As they reach the inn, Veyran steps out and pulls up his hood to cover his head from the rain.
"I believe this where we were told to go upon arrival. Let’s get started then."
Belnum jumps out of the carriage and quickly brushes himself off. As he does, he looks around the immediate area and gauging the mood of the townsfolk. He then focuses his attention towards the inn/tavern.
"Normally, I would recommend starting with the tavern, as alcohol tends to cause people to talk a little more. In this case, I doubt the patrons of this 'watering hole' would give us much useful information to go off from. Maybe it would be prudent to seek the captain of the guard or the mayor and see if we can get additional information from one of them about what exactly is going on?"
Baldwin will step out of the carriage looking around at what little buildings there are"If we wish we could split up and investigate the different areas separately afterwards we could reconvene and pool the information we gathered." He will turn towards the group aa he says this "If we do wish to proceed with this I would be fine talking to the clergy."
"I really don't think we should separate until we meet our benefactor. Till then we can investigate the inn keeper. It sounded like he was our best hope at getting any information. The townsfolk were said to be unlikely or at least difficult to get details from. Since the inn keeper knows why we're here perhaps he can maybe give us a name of someone affected to go to next." suggests Brix as he disembarks.
You enter the inn there is a singular table and a couple of stools near the bar. A older man with a tired disposition stands behind it and notes your arrival.
"Are you the ones I was told would be arrivin? Been waiting for ya to show up was told I would be paid double for assisting ya. Paid me 5 whole gold coin for it and told me another 5 after you finish! Coin like that might even help me get out of this Godforsaken village! I tell you not right anymore this place!"
Belnum approaches the bar and gives the bar tender a friendly smile.
"That we are, yes, we were sent here to figure out what exactly going on in this village. While we are at it, maybe there is something we can do to help resolve it as well. Our contact informed us you might have some information to help us get our investigation started."
He then places a single gold coin on the bar.
"Also, if you don't mind, a mug of ale for me and my compatriots."
He flashes a toothy smile at the site of the gold coin. He reaches into a closed cabinet and pulls out a corked bottle.
"Finest dwarven ale you ever had right here been saving this for the right patron! Now let me tell you about this plague that has befallen us. Its madness I tell you! People claiming they hearing voices and seeing vision! This whole mess began when the stars fell over our village. A ill omen that preceded this outbreak. First thing I noticed was the animals were agitated I think they sensed it. Now folks are scared and trying to leave. Only thing holding this village together is Cleric Crelik at the temple over yonder. That man has given more to this village in the past year since he came that most have in a life time. I fear this madness affects him though as he seems troubled now. Beyond that you could ask Marry at the general store she claimed to hear a voice speak to her but then again shes been mad long before this affliction."
He gives you all a mug with a generous amount of ale.
"Nothing better for a troubled mind then the nectar of the Gods!"

The corner of Shaw's mouth raises ever so slightly at Belnum's line of thought and question.
"It as you suspect although that is all I am at liberty to say presently. I shall see you all shortly then and goodluck."
He waves his hand and the coach heads out.

Belnum nods.
"I'm fine with starting our investigation with the innkeeper and going from there."

He will then slide the mug over to whoever seems to be enjoying it the most
