Almeric nods while he is thinking about Fergus points.
"We are supposed to believe this was simple robbery, by the mounted men with beards. If brigands, why did they not take Harold's expensive riding horse as well? I believe they were Beorn's men, with the same mission as ours; "Find Harold, get the Sword, I don't care about the Taxes!" The fact that Harold was hunted like a fox to his death suggests he knew of the plot and was unwilling to participate, for which he was killed."
"In desperation to escape, Harold headed for Hob's Dell. Perhaps those two dire wolves we saw jumped out and Harold was thrown by his horse over the fence. The Brigands were too frightened to follow Harold into the Dell and were unable to retrieve the sword. We were therefore given the exact same mission to complete, by the same man, Sir Beorn! When we found Harold in the Dell, he chose as his dying act, to point to the Prize Sword on his back, signifying it's importance and his innocent in the plot. When we return with Harold and the Sword, Beorn will probably have us all killed anyway, whether he thinks we know or not. No loose ends, you see."
"Earl Montrombre and Baron Aldred are long standing political rivals, occupying opposite ends of any argument. Grissaille is a vicious opportunist, who will only back the winner when the outcome is clear. Beorn is just a lickspittle, playing way above his station. I think if we can expose Beorn, the others will deny involvement and isolate the fool to his fate. Shite, I had forgotten about Le Cloche. We need to collect him, assuming he has not been freed already?"
"Just copy it and return the original to its hiding place. I don't want to spook Beorn any further. And prepare for another fight, as soon as Beorn finds us!"
Ori ponders the theories for a moment "So why send the sword with the tax man? He's not your typical package delivery system. And why chase him down after giving it to him? I don't like the fellow any more then the rest. But something isn't adding up. If the body was placed to made to bring attention to the sword, why not take the note out before we got involved? "

I don't like the fellow any more then the rest. But something isn't adding up. If the body was placed to made to bring attention to the sword, why not take the note out before we got involved? "
"It is totally expected for a Tax Collector to move around the Fief and would not be questioned. I think Harold discovered the secret the same way that I did. Anyone with Martial training will immediately feel the sword is off balance. The hilt is way too light. A simple examination revealed the secret compartment. I'm sure Harold was totally blindsided by Beorn and never questioned his loyalty, right up until that moment. Maybe all he had time for was to run?
Ori, feel free to discuss this with Beorn when we meet him, but make sure your tree trunk is free to swing first!"
We have no horses and cannot run from mounted knight. Perhaps our only chance of survival is to attack without warning, with speed and aggression? Beorn under estimated us before and may half considered that. He might accept the Sword and let us go in peace if he thought we were ignorant of it's purpose, or if we joined him? I'd just as rather kill the bastard!"
"Perhaps we lost a few of us retrieving the sword? And perhaps thier horse find their way out of the stables while we talk to them. There are always means to grab the upperhand. But we should decide before getting into town, who knows who could be a Beorn man."
Fergus appears crestfallen for a moment as his idea of spreading misinformation was dismissed but now a look of concern crosses his face.
"We have no reason to believe that Sir Beorn has even left Igham. Even if we were to face him and defeat him, without evidence the Baron himself would seek to hunt us down for killing his steward. If we confront Sir Beorn and try to trick or blackmail him, he could use both the power of the Baron and his treacherous allies to crush us. I want to hear what the others think before we decide anything.
If the thieves are part of the plot as Sir Almeric suspects, perhaps we should apprehend them? There could be enough truth in their confession to give the note enough weight to expose all the schemers. No doubt they have left a trail of gold for us to follow.
The real issue here I believe is time. The note implies that they intend to strike down the Baron on an upcoming hunt. Do we know where Alcuin is stationed? The note would suggest he is in the same location as the Baron if he is in a position to station guards as part of the plot. Perhaps going there directly will help us avoid a confrontation with Sir Beorn with a plausible excuse of delivering the sword and we can be in a position to warn the Baron?"

Almeric realised his blunt response and cushions Fergus ego slightly.
"Beorn is clearly NOT a man of letters and subtle intrigue would be wasted on him. When Beorn finds us, I'm sure the 'Brigands' will be there, right behind him, as Men-at-Arms, so there will be little need to seek them out. Baron Aldred is at Castle Gorham, our destination to take La Cloche, to receive Aldred's justice for his betrayal. That is where Alcuin will be, the whole sorry tale will play out at Aldred's castle. Michaelmass Hunts normally take place around the harvest moon, so not long at all to wait, a week maybe? Two betrayals in a week (Le Cloche and Beorn) will not sit well with the 'Old Wolf'. Aldred will be livid and will want blood for this, and yes, we could easily be blamed ourselves. It would be a brave man to execute a Knight Capellar though, as ther would be consequences."
"I like Ori's idea. Half our number; Tana, Fahm, Thatch and Cairnnach, could sneak and stalk us from concealment. You all have missile weapons and could shoot from a distance. Beorn will think there is just Ori, Fergus and myself anf I'll let him think you were killed by Gardener Jack. I wanna be up close to Beorn as I wanna kill him myself. If we focus on killing Beorn, the others might break and run, then it's arcace to Castle Gorham!"
With a cold sick feeling swirling in the pit of her stomach, Famh realizes that there are two sides to living in the world of men; and that evil can lurk just as easily behnd the smiling and outstretched hand as it can behind a flung stone. She breathes in to steady herself. then speaks diffidently but clearly.
"Why do we need to return with the sword at all? Beorn will wait for us to come back for some time; but when we don't he'll think we were all killed by 'Gardner Jack' and look for more fools to send on this chase. Meantime we have time to go straight to Baron Aldred with what we've learned. And this fellow Le Cloche is Beorn's responsibility until we come back, so they'll have plenty of time to enjoy each other's company! Besides, the Baron might want the pleasure of executing both traitors personally.
But if we do deliver the sword, then I agree that sounds like a good plan."
"Well we probably need to assume the message was sent another way once this one was compromised, that is assuming this note is real and not a setup. Personality I would prefer more damning evidence. Perhaps the horse could recognize the scent of its attackers?" There has to be something more. The fact the blade was on display, while he was chained up on the post, still bothers me."
Cainneach's mind wanders as his companions debate how to deal with the treacherous note. He cared little for intrigue, particularly among nobles. In his experience, their squabbles mostly seemed to bring unhappiness upon those around them, who usually knew nothing of and cared nothing for their well-bred problems. But for the vanity and recalcitrance of Thulish nobles, Cainneach's family might still be alive.
In addition to not giving much thought to the intrigue, Cainneach also didn't partake in scheming if he could avoid it. Better to be direct, less complications that way. Of the plans proffered thus far, Famh's seemed to be the simplest. It's a noble problem, so relay the information and let them sort it out amongst themselves. No sense putting our lives on the line in a fight with Beorn and his thugs. When he finally speaks up, he says, "I'm with Famh here, let's just get the note to Aldred and let him deal with Beorn. I know the costs of getting caught up in this sort of infighting. If we need to lay low after, I can hide us in the woods well enough."
Thatch listens to the message and remains silent and he mulls over their options. He knew little of highborn politics and was beginning to prefer dealings they have had with the fey. “We are in no shape to fight Sir Beorn and his men, most of us barely made it out of the dell. If we did manage to defeat him we would be wanted, the letter and any other evidence we presented would be viewed as the schemes of murderers." He looks over at Famh and Cainneach and nods "I say we take the sword and the note to the Baron. Or we could return the sword to Sir Beorn and pretend that we are none the wiser to the plan and try to foil it later. Whatever the way forward, I will stay with you Sir Almeric.”
As the companions discussed and planned their immediate aches and pains ebbed a way, the evening began to grow colder they would soon either need to move on or make camp for the night.
Almeric considers the choices he was given, in earnest and in all conscience.
"Very well, it seems our best chance of success is to get to Baron Aldred before Beorn does and deliver the sword with evidence of the plot within. The only way that any credence will be given to the evidence is if it's presented by myself. As a Noble born and Knight Capellar, this would give anyone reason to pause and consider what I have to say. Le Cloche will just have to wait and that will be on me to resolve later."
"It is getting dark, we have no supplies or horses and about 100 miles to travel to reach Castle Gorham. We are against mounted knights, are outnumbered, cannot be drawn into a fight and must keep off the roads out of sight. If we can get to Trefel tonight, we might be able to take a boat up the Hern River. We could take turns to row all night, while some sleep, getting to Karickbridge by morning? Beorn might think we were all killed by Tuannon Dur and may delay his march until dawn, by which time we are a day ahead. We then cut across county to Venforth Abbey, then use the waterways again to get to Wulfustun. From there we have the final 20 miles to Castle Gorham. I hope you enjoy travel?" laughs Almeric.
"Better than the gallows, or the business end of a noble's claymore.," Famh replies somewhat more grimly. "And he might also decide it won't hurt to be careful, and start his move tonight. How long will it take us to reach Trefel, do ye think?"

"To Castle Gorham then." Fergus agrees. "Although I do not believe we should make such haste as to arrive threadbare. As long as we move steadily and aim to arrive before the hunt can we not travel as normal under the pretence of official business delivering the sword? With the knowledge we have of the plot, we are a step ahead of any possible pursuers as long as we remain sharp of eye and quick of weapon."
Regardless of if his words are heeded or not, Fergus will travel with the group with his eyes peeled for Sir Beorn's men.
( Travel will be divided into sections ( see OOC Thread)- Feel free to post IC and make what rolls you wish here for the first section. Once at least five people have posted we'll move to the next section.)
Almeric reforms the group in marching order and prepares to set off at the double towards Trefel, travelling from day to dusk. If Ori is happy to do so, we will continue to carry Harold, sharing the load with Almeric. If not, the tax collector will be left in a shallow grave beneath the hazels. Almeric is glad to have a simple objective. 1st CON = 22 (10), natural 20!
The river journey to Karickbridge took its toll on Almeric, as his adrenaline drops and exhaustion creeps up on the Paladin. 2nd Con = 4 (12), 1st Level of Exhaustion.
Almeric regroups himself and rallies his group to reach Venforth Abbey in good order. 3rd Con = 13+1 Fortune of the Many (14), 1st Level of Exhaustion.

As the group sets out on our long march, Famh settles back into the role of quiet and curious observer that she had naturally fallen into on the way to Hobsen's Dell. Some of the time, she reflects on what happened with Tuannon Dur and Harald and tries to absorb her new abilities into her understanding of herself; but she spends the rest of the journey to the Abbey quietly paying attention to the surrounding countryside and the events of the journey. In places where she senses or has heard of danger, she scans from side to side of the path in case a wild beast or brigand is lying in wait.

Thatch pulls himself to his feet and nods at Fergus “We should move quickly, but not recklessly. Beorn did not seem overly impressed by our group, with any luck he may think we have fallen to the spirits in the dell. We came close enough to that as it is. Cainneach and I can try to cover our trail to gain a little more time” He glances over at Cainneach “I am not as good in the woods as you, few people are, but the old farrier always said I was a quick study. I will watch you and help where I can.” Thatch tightens his bandages and moves out with the others, staying to the rear of the party this time to try to hide any sign of their passing to delay or confuse anyone following.
Thatch's wounds do not slow him too much during the first section of travel and he arrives sore, but with his spirits high. (I will roll each section separately unless you want it otherwise.)
