Ori: "Please someone be a good chap and remind me why I am awake at this hour and nobody is dying?"
"Because there was a notion that folk might be dying." Vardi offers "And if that was so, then being there ta find out fer sure and ta do something about it might be useful."
She looks somewhat less confident as she concedes "Nobody is dying at present, but tis nae dawn yet, and we have no certainty as ta what is at tha heart o'this matter beyond wha has gone afore."
Ori: "Someone else is watching over the lads? Then why are we? Almeric wants us rested and recharged by morning and this is not how you do it last I checked. We have no proof of foul doings by those lads otherwise we would have delt with them before. We don't know who or what is behind what's going on. "I cannae speak for anyone but maself, Sarge, but a shred of straight told truth about tha missing lass Morag, or an inkling as ta wha tha Nilfheim is going on here would certainly be helpful!"is the murmured but no less heartfelt reply.
Indeed there is a note of near panic to her tone as the Lyften lass explains "Nae sleep when a mind will nae stop picking at puzzle like this, even dreams are fraught wi' questions."
The Joturn-kin mutters woefully "Plenty o'kine and a mournful bull, aye, but why would a sow come out tha dark forest ta seek justice? Tis tha only swine I've as much as laid waking eyes on of late."
Thatch:‘‘Tis a chance, but I’ve not had the occasion to shoe in some time, let me see what I can find.”He digs through the pouch at his side, rummaging for a moment before pulling out the requested nail, face lit up like he found a prize. “Here you go, but what will you be needing it for?”
Vardi looks so relieved to see her hunch pointed true that she near falls, but puts a hand to steady herself on Ori's shoulder before she replies "I have heard it said that iron holds things fast to this world. That power in a nail of iron can be cunningly used to fasten a wandering spirit to solid form, or a living criminal to a single place from which they cannae move, all be it fra but a little while."
Her voice drops to a whisper surprising in so large a woman as she explains in urgency"Wha'ere stalks tha halls and corridors here, if I can find them and hold them back but a moment, then I mean ta ask 'em tha true why at tha heart o this affair, and ta show a little mercy this time, or show none ta 'em if they have none ta offer."

As she folds her arms gratefully around Cainneach's shoulders and pulls him closer, Famh finds herself thinking that one of the things she particularly loves about him was his generous willingness to always offer more than anyone asks. Even more heartwarming is his particular, tender willingness to respond to her so even when what she asks is this unexpected and vast. She sighs happily into his ear, "Thank ye, dearest. Yer head is sae level ye aye help me find the sense i' things. O' course we coud leuk for thaim baith at the same time. "Oi, a minute or two to discuss but unless there's a clear sign of something to be done, back to bed with the lot of ya." It's like debating with kids that had too much energy to sleep, or Ori assumed that was what like. Still tired, he grogally follows the others to hear their case, but Ori knew ot would be an uphill battle to change his mind at this point. Almeric would have words for Ori for not keeping everything in line, even Ori himself participating. How could Ori expect others to follow orders and commands if he himself didn't.
"Tae bed wi' the lot of us? Aye, we coud ... ," Famh admits as she and Cainneach emerge from the shadows to join the discussion. "But a bed's little use wi' nae sleep to gae wi' it; and I've hardly had a wink all neet worriting we'll find twa blocks o' ice in the morn to tak' back to Carnasse wi' us. It doesn't help her case that she has to stifle a yawn just then, but she hopes it will also show the big man that she fully sympathizes with his position. And the knotted ball of anxiety that has been building in her since the first time she tried to go to bed this night suddenly bursts into an earnest outpouring of words.
"I do ken that Sir Almericwantit us tae rest, Ori, but if we fail in our duty through ower scrupulous followin' o' orders I at least will niver be able tae live with maself. Anticipating the debate to follow, Cainneach quietly replies, "I'll be over in a minute ..." and makes to adjust some of his gear. After Famh wanders off, he simply resumes his watch, not having moved from his point of surveillance. No sense in leaving the quarry unguarded for even a few minutes while he's out here anyway. Cainneach will remain at his post, as he suggested to Famh that he would, unless he hears directly that everyone must turn in. The forester tightens his cloak against the bitter cold and sweeps his gaze over the area.
"What was that? What did they sa... ah for hello sakes, let's find out was the fuss is about. Cain, where we headed?" Ori draws both his hand axes and starts to move to follow the ranger still on watch in hopes he knows where the cry came from and best way to get to it. Now wishing he had brought the greatclub with him, he starts to move. Thankful he atleast took his armor, he hopes the others were better prepared then he was, another fail as he didn't even take note of everyone's preparedness. Could have used a few hours of sleep clearly.

The forester is glad he trusted his instincts, and that of Famh as well. Though his usually sharp senses seem to be dulled from the lack of sleep, there is no mistaking that the cry that arose came from the gate. Hearing the sergeant's inquiry, he steps out of the shadows, makes certain to catch Ori's eye, and silently waves an arm toward the gate. Cainneach then draws his bow while proceeding quickly to the source of the disturbance, hoping to catch a glimpse of what's causing the commotion. Salt pads along beside his master, sniffing for signs of danger.
"On t'other hand, mayhap we dinnae have tae wait thon lang after aw.," Famh remarks with a slight start as the ware halloa rings out from the gate. Seeing Cainneach and Salt emerge from the shadows, she whistles quietly to get their attention. Then she waves her hands to indicate to Cainneach she plans to return to the shadows and move through them in a flanking maneuver to his straight approach, so that when he reaches the gate she will be concealed to his left ready to do whatever the situation may then require. Quietly murmuring a brief outline of this same plan to Ori as he starts off, she slips aside and begins to pace stealthily just a little quicker than her beloved until she reaches her now almost instinctively familiar position a step or two behind him.

Once Cainneach reaches a position that allows her, pacing him, to see out the gate at an angle to the opposite side from which she now is, Famh also peers in that direction in the hopes her position will allow her to spot things that might be hidden from the forester, Salt and Ori as they look directly out.

Cainneach and Famh are twin shadows in the gloom, with Salts faint form the only way to trace their passage downhill towards the ring-mound and gate, some way behind them Ori pounds heavily across the frosty dirt towards what he assumes is the source of the noise. Thatch slips behind them angling to the right of the gate to try and get sight upon things......

Perception 20
The group arrive at the gate in staggered positions Famh widely left coming up the ring mound beside the stables, Cainneach directly left of the gate both of them unobserved and silent within the shadows.
Salt and Ori skidded to a halt within the gate itself to see the three night watch men pointing in fear and confusion at something on the last curve of the ascending trail.
Thatch comes up on the right of the gate at the top of the mound and looks out towards what has been sighted.
“If the lads are guilty we should let the spirit have them.”Thatch grumbles quietly, then looks up at the shout from the gate. He quickly glances at Famh as they scramble toward the gate. On the road as if materialising from the mist are two translucent figures that seem to resemble the two dead lads, they are hard to make out in the mist but they both seem to be reaching out towards the gate as if asking for help......
Thatch-
Narrowing your eyes you are able to determine that they appear to be solid and not apparitions as the mist is moving around and not through them......and they appear to be completely motionless.
Cainneach-
Your keen eyes, even in the darkness and mist immediately pick out that these are not men, dead or not, but somehow expertly carved sculptures formed out of ice rather than stone..

Back at the manor doors Vardi is slightly discombobulated as everyone dashes off and then Keenan and a couple of the others emerge from the hall and seem startled to see her, " Whats happening?" Keenen says sleepily.
"Nae sure." Vardi answers in a rapid growl "But if ye nae get yerself back in there sharpish, someone may be tempted ta take vengeance inta their own hands just ta get some bloody sleep around here!"
Her gaze is stern as she moves forward and all but pushes him back into the barracks, but she whispers urgently in his ear as she leans in towards him on her relentless way "Bloody sure tha' if this is a distraction, then those idiots are in grave danger right now, most likely fra wha'ere chilled tha other two ta death!"
The Lyften lass looks past Keenan to check on the whereabouts of the two lads in his charge, wild-eyed in worry yet grim with the knowledge that if they are guilty of harm to Morag, then she would be first in line to end their worthless lives. Only the doubt that she could be mistaken in the truth of what they are guilty of stays her hand from the hammer at her hip.
Skoggi nips past her legs then pauses in his path to bat at Keenan's cloak hem with a paw...
OOC: Are the two accused lads still the barracks and more importantly, still alive?
"Nae sure." Vardi answers in a rapid growl "But if ye nae get yerself back in there sharpish, someone may be tempted ta take vengeance inta their own hands just ta get some bloody sleep around here!"

Vardi ducks her head around the corner as Keenan stalks back towards his charges, all appears fine.........Skoggi immediately pauses in his trot towards the halls hearthfire and all of their fur stands on end as their back arches and Skoggi turns side on staring at the two lads and hissing and spitting.
"Stay alert boys. I'll go see what's going on out there, watch my back, but try not to hit it aye? Thatch, get Almeric and my my head basher. Come on pup, let's go see what we can find." Ori will start forward in a brisk walk towards the ice folks. Trying to get a sense of where everybody was, Ori does a quick scan as he first steps out. Keeping his head forward as no make it seem like his eyes weren't darting around everywhere, he notices that Vardi wasn't with them. Blasted woman drags me out of bed and doesn't hop on the disturbance, must have stayed back with the 2 rats they were thinking would be victims, though these ice blocks suggest they may have been wrong. Well if she's right, at least Thatch should pass by her way. Ori wasn't in a hurry to get out there, mote of a show really that he would walk out confidently to see what's going on, relying on Salt to warn him if something wasn't right. He whispers, "don't you dare get frozen, Cain would never let me hear the end of it, and if I get frozen I'm going to haunt your furry arse so ears up, aye?" Putting one of the handaxes away he takes a lit tourch from one of the guardsmen.
Ori: "Please someone be a good chap and remind me why I am awake at this hour and nobody is dying?"

(mmmm.... at the end of p 154 I said Famh had equipped herself with her raiment and pouches. That implies also the magical needle-dagger which is stuck into one of the pouches' flaps for camouflage, and no self-respecting Thulishwoman would gae anywhere without her sgeain dubh. I'd argue she would also think of the Cailleach's bag as a "pouch" and grab it instinctively. I think the only things she's lacking now are her backpack and the things in it [hemp rope, rations, hunting trap, torches, food, and bedding]. And sling bullets, I don't seem to have remembered to put those down on her character sheet. so pls someone remind me to buy some before we leave the shire town with its market. As for her staff, I think she would have left it behind for similar reasons Ori left his greatclub and might be having similar second thoughts/regrets at leaving it)=.)
Famh Thrawn Fiadhaich - 'half elven' sorcerer (wild magic) 2, Sleeping Gods - A Dragon Warriors campaign in the Lands of Legend
Quspira Inirali - tiefling cleric (Life domain) 4, Painted's "He'll be the father of my child"
---RETIRED HEROES' REST HOME---
Sae Ivui Nailo - wood elf rogue (inquisitive) 5 , Sea of Death: Captain Hailstorm's Lost Treasure
Ryshraxea "Shra" Naranthi - tabaxi artificer 1, Nyx's Tomb of Annihilation - Group 1
Once Cainneach reaches a position that allows her, pacing him, to see out the gate at an angle to the opposite side from which she now is, Famh also peers in that direction in the hopes her position will allow her to spot things that might be hidden from the forester, Salt and Ori as they look directly out.

“If the lads are guilty we should let the spirit have them.” Thatch grumbles quietly, then looks up at the shout from the gate. He quickly glances at Famh as they scramble toward the gate. Was she right? How does she do it? Thatch hurries to the gate, angling away from Cainneach and the others to be in a place to provide cover for them if necessary as he peers toward the gate to see what the ruckus is all about.

Keenan: " Whats happening?"
