Pressing her back against the stable wall to stay as concealed as possible for as long as she can, Famh maneuvers up and over the packed earth of the ring mound. She seeks out a position where she can see and support both Cainneach and the approaching Ori as he emerges from the gate; draws her sling from the pouch dangling at one hip and checks the other to ensure the Cailleach's gift bag hangs there with Snathad stuck through its flap in needle form. For a moment she considers drawing forth a ball in the hopes of summoning a night-eyed giant badger or even a fae lucerve such as Fionnuala had been; but her all-too-fresh memory of that companion's terrible fate makes her hold her hand for the moment. Instead she loads a long-hoarded smooth pebble into her sling (grumbling at her short memory the while and making a mental note to check the armory for bullets as soon as all is calm once more); and looks up to spot at last the figures her two companions have already seen.
For a moment the young fae-blooded sorceress doubts the reality of her senses. Hadn't she just left those two lads safe and well and, most pertinently, sound asleep in the hall behind her? Then she narrows her eyes with an only slightly less startled blink as she notices that the translucent figures' appearance more closely matches the two who have already been rendered into Thulesicles. As these aren't the ghaists she was expecting, she peers suspiciously at them, wondering why those particular shades would come hainting aroond the place with no sign in sight of the one she suspects of being their killer. Riffling rapidly through her encyclopaedic memory of supernatural tales, she tries to find the slightest shred of a reason why those who fell to the wronged spirit's vengeance should return in a case like this.
As Famh stares into the icy darkness trying to make out the details of two dim figures who bear neither torch nor candle, she reflects that this is decidedly a situation where more light and more warmth are (almost) always better. Her magic fire immediately springs to mind, and she begins looking for a place she can cast this glamour as close to the figures as possible while giving Orienough time and room to maneuver freely around it. She’s not sure if she will be able to signal him before doing so, and takes a little extra time to make sure the fire will neither blind him (or Cainneach, or herself, for that matter) nor obstruct his current course. At the same time she wants to avoid actually engulfing the two figures in her flames, since she is not yet sure whether they are enemies.
The few extra moments give her time to order the mental notes she’s been busily squirreling away since the situation began to unravel; she draws a relieving breath as she realizes she can let the matter go and focus fully on the present after storing away only three reminders for later in her book of piseogues:
1. Padded jack
2. Sling bullets
3. Or a staff slin ,,,(?!) ... (Gatanades, Primroseblossom, andLugh, where did that thought come from?) ... Of course, now she thought of it (with a bubbling warmth that stirred the deepest embers of her heart) she didn’t have to worry about a third reminder to look for her sister now she had Cainneach’s reassurance he’d have a thought for her too. But that her mind should fill that empty third slot by following on with her wish that she’d restocked her sling bullets and coming up with something as mad as –
… though considering the subject more carefully, she did seem to recall tales of the Selentines using some such weapon in besieging a broch during one of their (at best) variegatedly successful attempts to press beyond the wall they had constructed just north of Brymstone and take control of northern Thuland. She tried to bring some of the details to mind, but the scene seemed to her to fade back into the mists that had enwrapped this part of the country from that day even unto the present (History 7). The stones crumbling from that wall’s ruins had furnished Famh’s sling with missiles long before she had the coin or the connections to do more than dream of bullets. But it had been little warmer at its feet than it was here, being built mainly on commanding heights where the wind had little pity for softer creatures than stone; and with a shiver she dismisses the idea to her list of future possibles and returns to focusing on present tangibles. Such as the potential usefulness and best location of a fire. (held action: create bonfire).

Cainneach grits his teeth and wishes his faithful hound were at his side to offer some bestial intuition as to the nature of what his eyes were seeing. Absent Salt's nose, Cainneach's eyes were all he could rely on at the moment. Thus, he squints in the darkness, trying to reassure himself that he is not deceived. Two young men, as ice statues? Surely not their actual bodies entombed, but a manifestation raised by the wrathful girl's spirit ... leading to the question of where could she be? The forester peers about into the night, hunting urgently for a sign of the murderous lads' tormenter. Cainneach readies his bow while he scans, though he doubts his mundane shots will affect the girl.
Thatch looks back between the figures outside the gate and Ori, hesitates, then sighs, “Aye, Sarge, I’ll be back in a flash.” He doesn’t want to miss the action at the gate, so he sprints back towards their quarters. Arriving out of breath, Thatch bangs his fist against the door and raises his voice in a shout to wake the Knight. “Ser Almeric! Ser Almeric! Come quick, there is something at the gate and we fear it may be trouble for those accused boys.”Thatch quickly lowers his voice, no need in alarming the entire place, but word is surely out across the compound by now. Thatch stands by the door, continuing his knocking until Ser Almeric wakes up and quickly shares what he knows of the situation.
The group arrive at the gate in staggered positions Famh widely left coming up the ring mound beside the stables, Cainneach directly left of the gate both of them unobserved and silent within the shadows.
Salt and Ori skidded to a halt within the gate itself to see the three night watch men pointing in fear and confusion at something on the last curve of the ascending trail.
Thatch comes up on the right of the gate at the top of the mound and looks out towards what has been sighted.
“If the lads are guilty we should let the spirit have them.”Thatch grumbles quietly, then looks up at the shout from the gate. He quickly glances at Famh as they scramble toward the gate. Was she right? How does she do it? Thatch hurries to the gate, angling away from Cainneach and the others to be in a place to provide cover for them if necessary as he peers toward the gate to see what the ruckus is all about.
On the road as if materialising from the mist are two translucent figures that seem to resemble the two dead lads, they are hard to make out in the mist but they both seem to be reaching out towards the gate as if asking for help......

Damian_May: did you mean that we can all see the figures, but only Thatch and Cainneach have vantage to see what's in the spoilers; or are the figures only visible to those with a direct view out the gate? If so, Famh would need to first maneuver to where she can see them too (and I think the others' focus on them would tip her off in general as to where to look); otherwise she intends to cast create bonfire near enough to them to fully illuminate both figures, as soon as she assesses where to place it so she doesn't blind or block her companions)
Vardi ducks her head around the corner as Keenan stalks back towards his charges, all appears fine.........Skoggi immediately pauses in his trot towards the halls hearthfire and all of their fur stands on end as their back arches and Skoggi turns side on staring at the two lads and hissing and spitting.

OOC: Perception for Vardi because her eyes aren't seeing whatever is setting Skoggi off all sideways and snarling, total of 19.

Famh is reminded by the guards' reaction that she has perhaps become a little too used to being in the wild hinterlands where her powers draw less of a negative reaction. Thinking quickly, she begins to cross herself also and even lets out a yelp of startled alarm as if the sudden appearance of a bonfire was the last thing she had been expecting. (Deception 5) She looks about to see where Cainneach is currently positioned, and hurries over to him calling out (again, more for the guards' ears than his), "Whit's gaein' on, leannan?! Where did yon bonefire come frae aw on a sudden?" As soon as she gets close enough for a whisper, though, she murmurs, "These arenae whit we were expecting! Have you seen the spirit we fear, Cain m'eudai? Where is she?!" She turns her head from side to side, scanning behind and before her in a circle from left to right. As she does, she thinks that this is a quite natural thing for anyone to want to do at this point, regardless of what they may or may not know about the origin of a certain sorcerous fire.
Despite the gravity of the situation, Cainneach can't help but smirk at Famh's exclamation regarding the bonfire. With that out of the way, he replies to her question, "I dinnae see her anywhere, or at least I couldn't before this sudden and shocking fire started!" He nudges her playfully with his elbow, then continues, "I might as well take another look, now that I can actually see!"

"Aye, an' we can Help ilka other focus e'en better now thon we''re close!," Famh responds with an answering smile ... even in the face of multiple past demonstrations that the effect is so, so often the exact opposite :-)

Ori walks past a bit to make himself a primary target if something did come out of the darkness.
Out at the gate Ori moves out with a bemused Salt trailing behind, Cainneach and Famh on overwatch as he does so......he moves down the road and up the rise performing a wide circuit of the now rapidly melting icy sculptures and finding nothing out of the ordinary......well except for a fueless bonfire and two ice statues that came from god knows where. ................................
Thatch bounded to Almerics door and knocked perhaps a little too frenetically, the bleary eyed knight stomped to the door and hauled it open.
" Oh, Thatch! Whats happening.....I was having quite a nice dream about our time back in Beltayne.", he caught sight of Thatchs face and quickly moved back and quickly threw his gambeson over his nightshirt as he snatched up a dagger and held it inverted against his forearm.
" Explain on the way."
..............................
Vardi came forward, disconcerted by Skoggis discomfort she moved rapidly across the hall to the two sleeping lads and noted Dochartaigh seemed to be snoozing contentedly.........the other lad however was almost blue and his clouded breath was becoming shallower and shallower. Bending over him she was shocked to see a small translucent arm reaching up out of the flagstones its hand grasped about his throat and frost across his skin and the stones below him...............
Just before she turns her attention to the information gathering Ori has called for, Famh looks Cainneach straight in the eye, and from her suddenly dreamy look he fears that she is about to spiral back into one of her mazy and complex (albeit enchantingly earnest) perorations. But it is only the prelude to a kiss, deftly stolen and wrapped up with a despatch that reassures him she is fully aware of the limited time and attention they can afford to spare for such moments in the current situation.
She does let out a little wistful sigh as their lips part; and if he asks her why she chose to kiss him just then, she whispers into his ear, "Seein' the way those guards reacted remindit me again how special ye are, that ye can accept the whole of me as I am and love me strange powers and aw. But I suppose it's always been so, e'en back when the Auld Faith held sway the length and breadth of Albion frae the southmost tip o' Ellesland aw the way up tae the Lyftens. Whit wis that which Myrddin said tae Nyneve in the legend, when she wis askin' tae be his pupil? "
"... 'It's a lonely life, ye ken, the way o' the sorcerer, tae ken too much. Lacrimae mundi, the tears o' the world ... .' "
Her spirits brighten again as she adds with a mischievous wink, "O' course, that was before she took it intae her heed tae cheer awa his loneliness the way ye ha' cheered mine." She either doesn't know or chooses to forget any further developments in the story beyond that; clearly she is not implying that she fears Cainneach is destined to eventually abandon and imprison her within a crystal cave ;-) In any case, with regard to the crystalline ice-statues she is all business as soon as her leannan is ready to proceed, moving in time with him so they can watch each others' and Ori's back as they move to investigate the glittering forms. As she knows she must focus on her fire to keep it lit, and that she can only maintain the contact with Faerie for a minute in the case of this particular glamour, she feigns a proper demureness and allows Cainneach to examine the icy forms first. Then, as the flames 'mysteriously' disappear, she also takes a look by the star and moonlight in case her elfin sight allows her to see anything more where mortal eyes would merely be blinded by the sudden disappearance of the firelight.

Action: spell concentration
Held action: Investigation (still with disadvantage from the sudden change of light though) 14
(D_M: I tend to prefer the 2014 interpretation of the Investigation ability, as I think the present interpretation of Perception is too broad and doesn't allow for a distinction between just casually glancing around and actively searching for something. If you'd rather go by current rulings though, Famh's Per roll for this one is 17)
(no, it isn't held Investigation 14 either. After all that, I forgot to select 'disadvantage' in the dice roller LOL. It's actually held Investigation 6, or held Perception 7 in the latter case)

(and yes, that is a quote from probably one of my favorite movies ever, Excalibur, if only because Patrick Stewart played King Leodegraunce and I was a ST:TNG fan even before I discovered that movie on video. Stepping beyond the statues and bonfire Ori sets his stature to watch guard, hoping his big silhouette with the bonfire behind him woukd give any in the darkness to approach. It was an old trick from the shows he used to be in, the low light source and dark surroundings made him look bigger and even more terrifying. He hoped he had the angle right, the bonfire was bigger then what he normally had worked with but it had nice, fluctuating feature. "Come out come where ever you are... (and yes, that is a quote from probably one of my favorite movies ever, Excalibur, if only because Patrick Stewart played King Leodegraunce and I was a ST:TNG fan even before I discovered that movie on video. It's also beautifully atmospheric and dreamy, just the kind of film Famh would love if the cinematograph had existed in Thuland in her day ;-)

Salt, find Cain and go find Vardi, not like her to be on the front line of defense." He tries to peer out into the night (no darkvision, just a torch and campfire.)
Whither indeed ...
