Chara will go inside first to find out a little bit more about what to expect at the festival before heading over there, unless Nikolai and Lucian would rather go straight to the festival. With a bit of luck, maybe the owner of the inn will have something that Chara and the others who are going to the event can wear. The she-devil doesn't really expect to 'blend in,' but she at least wants to look like she's made an effort and is supposed to be there.

Unhappy that the market got rid of individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
Lucian would also like to know whats going on here before they go anywhere else, so he follows Chara inside after giving Nikolai a questioning glance. He assumes the half-elf would also like to know whats going on, else why did they come here first to begin with?
Bran leaves a breath he didn't really know was containing when the inkeeper responds as expected and turns to enter the building. Inspiring confidence into others could be an ability of his, but that didn't necessarily mean that it worked on himself that well.
Anyway, being currently at the front of the group, he tries to keep as composed and calmed as he can - this is his first mission with the group and doesn't want to mess things up - and simply follows Martikov and Eithne inside.
He seats at the appointed table, puts the backpack with the lute in the floor next to his right leg and waits for the man to come back from what seems to be the kitchen door.
While he waits, Bran's green eyes wander from the kitchen door to the interior of the building itself. Then sees the druid, who has barely spoken to them, sitting someplace else and thinks "...and I thought Lenn was weird...".
While this is happening, his mind races with some questions he wants to ask Martikov. Not only about the mission, but about the festivities themselves. What should they pay attention to and wear if they do attend the event? And why the wolves? Why the pikes? Why on earth are children specifically required? The inkeeper may not have answers, but he sure as hell is not going to leave another "conspiration meeting" without at least asking. And Lenn is right: the mission is top priority, but ... something still bugs the bard...
While he's doing this and that, Bran absently runs his right index finger through his portion of the table, tracing invisible lines on it. Only they are not invisible and appear as subtle bursts of color that fade almost at the moment. When the inkeeper appears through the kitchen door again, he stops and clasps his hands together.
- What a nice place you have here, Master Martikov- he says, kind of breaking the ice - I guess we should introduce ourselves. My name's Bran. Thank you for allowing us in in such a hurry.
Lenn enters the last one, looking around to see if anyone is paying special attention and keeps himself next to the door, leaning against the wall, arms crossed over his chest.
Nikolai follows the others into the inn. "We are a little short on time, I'm afraid, Master Martikov. We have been sent here by a mutual friend, but it is probably not wise to say more than that out loud. A few of us will go to the festival to avoid drawing attention to ourselves," (here he involuntarily glances at Chara), "and then we wish to visit with you more to find out how we can be of service to .... the cause. Is any special garb required for this gathering, or merely our presence? Will you accompany us?"
Upon hearing Nikolai's approach, Bran adds more questions:
- And what are attendees expected to do? Just watching some kind of performance or will something else be required of them? I read something about pikes being handed, which I really don't know how to correlate to children's presence being specifically required. The more we know, the better we'll blend in.
Bran will make up his mind depending on Master Martikov answers, but is already thinking that if he goes too and only Lenn and Eithne stay away with the pups, it should be pretty easy to excuse the pair of them if the need arises.
When Eithneasks him about the "season with the Edel flower," the father stops in his tracks, turns on his heel, goes to the front door and locks it from the inside.
He turns to the assembled party. He says, "We don't have time to go into details right now, but I'm grateful for your willingness to help my family. My name is Urwin Martikov. I can see that some of you are reluctant, but everyone in the town, even guests, are expected to go to the festival, as you likely know. No particular dress is required, just a willingness to dance to the Burgomeister's tune. He hasn't asked us to do anything absolutely evil...yet."
Looking at Bran, he says, "You're new. I'm glad to meet you. I imagine that there will be some taunting of captive wolves at this fest and that some townspeople will be chosen to participate. It will be ugly. The wolves will have been starved and tortured. It's all to demonstrate our strength to the devil Strahd" (he spits on the floor) "who neither cares about the festival nor the Burgomeister's false bravado. Perhaps next week he'll have us paint daisies on our houses' walls to assure ourselves its spring. But we must attend; he can get quite testy if he edicts are ignored and we don't want the attention. I'll explain what I ask of you after the festivities. Please hurry and put away anything you don't want to take to the festival. I have two rooms prepared for you upstairs." He starts up the stairs to lead you to your rooms.
A pit rises in Lucian's stomach as Martikov explains what he thinks will happen at the festival. Its starting to sound like they all will have to go whether they want to or not, as Urwin doesn't seem willing to miss the mandatory celebration. Hopefully they could find somewhere safe to leave the pups...perhaps they could leave them in the room? Or would it be safer to keep them with them? No, if one of the guards saw the pups they might decide to include them in the festivities.
He looks over to Eithne, then back at Urwin, "Um...well... if we all have to go, is there somewhere safe we could leave our pups? I'm...not sure it would be the best idea to bring them with us..."He trails off, looking to Chara and then Eithne. Its really up to them what they want to do, the pups are theirs.
Letting out a shaky breath he says to Nikolai, "Um...even if we aren't required to dress up... we told those guards that we were going to wear some sort of festival clothing. Won't they get suspicious if we show up wearing the same thing they saw is in earlier? Or...do you think it matters..."
"I-I don't want Lydl anywhere near this horrid event," Chara says, sounding extremely queasy as Martikov describes the festival. "With any luck most people would assume they're just dogs... but I don't want to take that chance. Eithne, I know that you won't like this idea much, but I'm not sure what other options we have... I can order Ichabod to watch them and make sure that they don't wander off or get hurt while we're at this so-called 'festival'."

Unhappy that the market got rid of individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
- ... Holy hell ... - is Bran's mere response to Martikov's explanation. It would be terribly unfortunate that any of them were chosen to participate. Unfortunate. The word resounded in his mind and he felt his heart shrink remembering Chara's warning - We should brace ourselves. In case some of us are chosen. It would be unfortunate - and he couldn't help but stress this word - and the probability may not be high. But it is a possibility nonetheless.
He looks at Lucian when he reminds that the group did say something about wearing costumes:
- You're absolutely right, Lucian. We musn't leave anything to chance. Master Urwin - he asks the inkeeper - do you have any spare cloaks? I can paint them with magic pretty quickly and at least that would be something. The paintings and marks would last for an hour and I can refresh them in situ if necessary.
If we get cloaks and the group agrees with the suggestion, Bran will adorn them using Prestidigitation: "You make a color, a small mark, or a symbol appear on an object or a surface for 1 hour." He can cast this "at will".
- Now, if there's nothing else to add, I'll leave a few things upstairs and I'll be ready to go.
Bran will only take his lute, the clothes/armor he's wearing, the cloak if he gets one, and ... nothing else. He'll even leave his wedding ring and the locket pendant. But not the pan pipes pendant.
Also, he'll cover his lute with a little bit of "dirt", making it appear old and useless. He'll do this with Prestidigitation also: "You instantaneously clean or soil an object no larger than 1 cubic foot."
Cole whips off his cloak and writes in ash "Wolves Suck 💀" and gives his hood angry eyebrows. Conspiratorially, he approaches Chara and Lucian. "If we do participate we could skew the results in our favor - do such a bad job that the innocent animals escape. I can also commune with our pups and do my best to convince them to stay hidden. If we are chosen, best to do it quick and painlessly. Better than what any of these other clowns will give them."
Eithne accepts the idea of leaving Juhowly annd Lydel in a room of the inn, considering that Cole is able to communicate with them and recommend that they remain quiet without being heard. She also leaves them some of her own food so that they can eat in everyone's absence and feel more reassured.
"Good idea!" she comments smiling, when Bran magically paints some cloaks for the festival and resigns himself to wearing one (or she lets paint the robes she already has).
But at the idea of leaving a demon (however small and incompetent) alone with the puppies, she shakes her head in denial: "Ichabore alone with them? No, Chara... I love you and I respect you - and exactly for this reason, I would prefer your familiar to come with us and not be left alone with the puppies. You trust him a lot, but if by chance he finds a way to interpret your instructions as he pleases and takes the opportunity to harm Juhowly (which, note, he doesn't need a particular motive for - he's a devil - hurting harmless beings is like breathing to him, no matter how small and pathetic he may seem) I could never forgive myself for that. And as much as I'd still love and respect you... I'd tear him apart, immediately. We'd all lose something – you and I, someone we wouldn't want to lose, Ichabore, his life (but that would mean little to him - he would simply be back in hell, ready to do evil again in no time - thugh not here). I think he'd better come with us - just to be sure. Now... I know you are the wiser between us two, so I'll trust leaving you the final decision about your familiar - but don't forget that I am the more ruthless between us two - I'll do as I told you, should happen what I fear".
Nikolai shrugs. "I doubt they will remember us... most of us, at least. And if they do ask about the clothing I mentioned, I'll just tell 'em I put on my fancy underwear. I think they will have too much on their minds to be concerned about whether or not I deceived them. And if they do remember, I'm pretty good at getting lost in a crowd, and the rest of you can truthfully say that you don't know me that well, that we just met, etc. Plus, I'm dressed like a Vistani, and everyone, even the Burgomeister, is a little scared of us.
Listen, if someone really doesn't want to go to this thing, we'll make it work. We'll tell 'em you came down with the plague or dysentery or something. Although if we do that you probably won't be able to walk around town in the open afterwards. Up to you. Let's go. Oh, and fair warning, if chosen, I will do my best to put those wolves out of their misery as quickly as possible. No offense to anyone present or their pets, but that's really the most merciful thing to do, in my opinion. Doesn't mean I hate wolves. I just hate torture."
If you tell Urwin about the pups or show them to him, he smiles and offers to get them some meat from the larder. He also offers you a mop and bucket on the off chance they aren't yet housebroken ("Just in case," he says). He whistles when he does this and you hear a fluttering of wings from roof and a couple of caws. "They will be watched," he says.
Listening to your conversation as you drop whatever things you need to, Urwinsays, "I may have some old cloaks you can use. But we must hurry."
Chara:
Ichabodwhispers in your ear, "There is something strange and familiar about this man. I can't place my finger on it right now, but you should watch him carefully."
Eithne is pleasantly surprised by the innkeeper's kindness to the puppies: "Thank you very much, Urwin!" she looks at him with grateful azure eyes "If only there were more men like you, in Barovia ..." and she takes advantage of the man's generosity to arrange Juhowly and Lidel at best.
As the savage stranger hears a fluttering of wings from roof and a couple of caws, she replies to Urwin: "Watched? By crows? Are they trained? Do you know where they come from? Because, you see Urwin, this reminds me of something… Recently, I happened to see a raven behaving like… like it had human intelligence, you know? And also magical powers, perhaps... So, seeing that you too use ravens, I wonder if perhaps there is a connection" she's watching him intently - not suspiciously, but attentively, interested in any details he might reveal. "Does all this make you think about something?"
However, by the time the man answers (if he chooses to answer, that is) the last of the dusk elf maidens puts on her festival cloak and is ready to set off. She is tempted by what Nikolai said… She would much rather avoid this stupid Festival and stay with the puppies… But if the puppies are safe, then perhaps going to the festival remains the least risky and least troublesome course of action.

"Thanks for the heads-up," Chara tells Ichabod when he says that something feels oddly familiar about our host.

“I will go but Ibwill not wear any fancy… anything. I like your idea to help the wolves escape if we have the chance. “ he says to the Druid “This charade is pointless and cruel… I do not lee any pup but I do the k you for your kindness with them “ the paladin says to the innkeeper. “Now, Urwin, while the others get ready tell us. Lucian gives Cole a surprised look, then nods...then nearly shakes his head, only to say, "I...I like that idea but do you think we can pull it off? We've already got unwanted attention..." He trails off, glad that the druid was willing to help with the pups. He'd wanted to ask if Cole could speak to the pups anyways to see if Lydl could give them any insight as to what happened to Onika. ...but Blinksy said they might as well give her up as a lost cause... He shook his head, no, he still feels kind of responsible for her disappearance so if there is any hope of getting her back... "Um...Cole? Thanks a lot for offering to help with the pups. Um...well if you can talk to them, do you think you could ask Lydl...Chara's pup, if he remembers anything about what happened when our companion Onika went missing? I... I know that Blinksy said we probably won't be able to save her even if we knew what happened...but... I just still feel like we should try..."
He turns his attention to Nikolai... The half-elf's words made sense...though Lucian has a feeling that the guards will remember them. Even if Nikolai wears Vistani clothing, that might not excuse the rest of them. So he is glad for Bran's idea... "Oh...okay..." He looks at Bran, "Thats a good idea...but...uh...if I need to wear one I'd prefer it to not be to colorful... I don't want to stand out to much..."
When Nikolai explains that if he is chosen he will put the wolf out of its misery Lucian hesitates, "That...that's fair. I...understand. As much as I'd like to let them go, it might not be the best option for us." He shifts uncomfortably, "How about we just stay at the back of the crowd...maybe that will lower our chances of getting chosen?" He has every intention of hiding as best he can whenever that part of the festival comes around. The last thing he wants is to be put up against a wolf in front of his whole town.
