"Oh, please feel free to join us," Chara tells Rontic, greeting the little man with a friendly smile as she moves aside a bit to make room for him.
She notices the look that Rontic gives the pups. The she-devil hesitates for a moment, but decides that it is in everyone's best interests to trust each other. Chara gently picks Cyrus up and offers the tiny animal to the tiny man. "Would you like to hold him for a bit? His name is Cyrus."
"Please, sit and be our guest" Eithne replies to Rontic, first in common, then in elvish if he does not seem to understand, gestuting with her hand also. "Do you like the cubs?"
If the small one is not budy with Cyrus already, she helps him to befriended Juhowly, passing him some food that he can offer to the she-wolf cub and showing him where the puppy likes to be petted and caressed the most.
"So you come from another place" the last of the dusk elf maidens tells anyway. "There is peace in your land? Can people live without getting murdered, oppressed or threatened?"
"No, I'm the only half-elf that I've ever heard of in Barovia. And until I met Lucian here, I thought I was the only elf of any kind born in Barovia in the last 400 years. You see, the foul beast that rules our land murdered all the female elves centuries ago." Here he pauses and glances at Eithne. "Ahem, uh, at any rate, the few elves who survived the war with Strahd and the massacre that followed now live in servitude to my mother's people, the Vistani. And no, the 'dilution' as you rather haughtily refer to it, is not common or looked favorably upon. I have been mocked and scorned by some from both sides of my family. Luckily, not all of them have such... antiquated views on racial purity."
You suddenly realize that you've seen Nadezhda before. In Blinsky's shop, there were several dolls in various outfits (shepherdess, princess, peasant, Vistani, and so forth) that all bore a remarkable resemblance to Nadezhda
Lenn:
You listen to Roland with a great deal of surprise. No-one you have heard of has ever survived challenging Strahd and certainly no woman Strahd has ever set his heart on has escaped his grasp. These adventurers must be brave, indeed, or exceedingly foolish. Roland seems sincere in wanting to get Nadezhda to somewhere safe. Unfortunately, you don't know of anywhere to escape Strahd's influence. You've heard of the town of Kreszk, which supposedly has high walls and a fortified monastery, but Strahd overcame those defenses when he was alive and he is much more powerful now. Possibly they could hide her in a cave in the mountains to the north or on Mt. Ghakis. It is a devilish problem.
Nikolai and Lucian:
Alliana dismisses her mistakes with a wave. In Elvish, she says, "Of course, I was confused. It is sometimes so hard to tell with our darker cousins who is who and how they came to be. But you say that your people have been here, and above ground, since before this became the Dark Lord's realm. Can you tell me where to find the local elven leader? I'd like to learn more of your people's story."
Looking hard at Lucian, she rests her chin on her hand. "You are a mystery. If what you say about your people's women is true, how is there a new "dusk elf" after all this time? Can you tell me anything about your parents and heritage?"
Eithne and Chara:
Rontic looks up at you sheepishly and picks up a wolf pup (Cyrus). He handles it roughly, as you watch. His pets seem more like blows and the wolf pup seems uncomfortable with how tightly it is being held. Rontic watches you carefullly as he holds the pup, as if expecting a blow.
Chara bites her lip as Rontic roughly handles her puppy. She doesn't want to snatch the canine away, as she doubts that the tiny man is being malicious... but she doesn't want Cyrus to get hurt either.
"Please be be gentle with him," Chara says, doing her best not to make any sudden movements towards Rontic or sound panicked in a way that might startle him. "Let me show you how to hold him."
She holds out her hands, inviting Rontic to return Cyrus rather than attempting to snatch the pup back (she would rather not resort to physically wrestling the pup away if she can avoid it...). Another thought suddenly occurs to Chara... the man hasn't said anything yet. Is it possible he doesn't speak common? If not, she doesn't have a lot of ways to try to commune with him. But she decides to give it a try. She repeats herself in Celestial, trying to be both firm and gentle in her delivery.
Lucian does his best to follow along with the elvish conversation. He understand most of what is said, and though there are some words that escape him, he can manage to patch together the conversation to where he can guess what they mean.
"Oh...um..."He almost says something about how the other dusk elves don't seem to like...well, anyone really from what he understands. But since he's had such little contact with them, he doesn't feel that he knows enough to judge this, so he decides to let Nikolai handle that half of the conversation.
When Alliana asks him about his heritage, he shifts uncomfortably, "I... not really. I'm pretty positive my father is...was... a dusk elf." He closes a hand around his pocket watch, "But I don't remember him or my mother really at all. I'd just always assumed... well I guess I just never had much time to think about it." He sighs, wrapping the thin chain of the pocket watch around his finger. This wasn't something he was particularly comfortable discussing with a complete stranger, but at the same time there wasn't any point in hiding it. He was an orphan...regardless to whether or not his parents could be alive...and he knew nothing about where he or either of them came from.
After a moment, he gives a nervous chuckle, "For all I know, maybe I am a... drow. I mean..if I look like one... I just don't know how I ended up here if that's the case."He doesn't like that thought, considering Roland's initial hostility based on their appearances, and Alliana's description of the drow people. Maybe his mother was a pale elf like Alliana... and he just looks more like his father? At this point he realizes that he is just grasping at straws. Still, he moves his hand once more to finger the pocket watch, his thumb rubbing against the clasp that would open it. If his mother was from...outside, that could answer a few questions...maybe.
Eithne decides to tell Lenn about 'Ir-er-Nadezhda' at the first opportunity; she doesn't want to go near him now that he seems to be able to keep on good terms with the pure one. She becomes even more curious about this mysterious woman who seems to have inspired Blinsky for so many of his creations. Perhaps she too belongs to the circle of those who would like to oppose Stradh… and is she in trouble because of this? However, the last of the dusk elf maidens has decided not to force the woman to confide... and she remains firm in this commitment; if 'Ir-er-Nadezhda' takes advantage of her offer to talk to her, she'll try to ask her even if she knows Blinsky... but she won't go pester her first.
In the meantime, she doesn't know what to make of the fact that Rontic treats the puppy so roughly. If he has not yet given it back to Chara, she tries to calmly apporach him and speaking gently she explains: "That way it's too strong for him, Rontic... He's just a puppy. You have to try to be gentler, you see?" she slowly tries to guide his hand, to make him understand what is the appropriate level of force "So, like this. You see?"
"Since we met you haven't said anything..." she tries anyway to ask the savage stranger "Is it because you can't? Are you mute?"
'If that were the case, at least you wouldn't be a big inconvenience, if one day you found yourself in my head too...' can't help but think ironically the last of the dusk elf maidens.
'I'm laughing out loud, now, Eithne!' the voices immediately begin to make themselves heard, resentful 'That's really funny!' 'Oh, well, so we would be an 'inconvenience' instead?' 'And a big one too!'
'Okay,' Eithne sighs mentally 'this time I brought it on myself'.
With that, the savage stranger resigns herself to bear the avalanche of thoughts and waits to see if Rontic answers her (proving he is no mute), nods to her (as if to confirm he is mute), or at least treats the puppy more appropriately.
Alliana sees Lucian playing with the watch and says, "That watch is beautiful. It must have great meaning for you. Would you mind if I gave it a look? Perhaps there is a clue to your past there that I could help you discover."
Eithne and Chara:
When Chara speaks to Rontic in Celestial, we reacts with genuine fear. He drops the pup and scrambles backward, raising his hands to stop the blow he thinks is coming. He also screams, an inarticulate, malformed yelp.
Everyone hears Rontic scream. And turn to look at the scene, with Rontic cowering and Eithne and Chara still reaching for him (well, actually for the pup, but no-one has any reason to suspect otherwise).
Chara looks around at everyone staring at the scene, her heart beating at a hundred miles an hour... she didn't mean to scare the little man! Part of her wants to just fly off, perch on top of a tree and hide until this all gets sorted out. But she knows that would only make this whole situation look worse... and she's trembling so badly that that she doubts she could unfold her wings right now if she tried.
She quickly scoops up Cyrus, trying to comfort him to the best of her ability while scooting closer to Eithne.
"I... I didn't mean to scare him..." Chara says in reference to Rontic, her voice barely rising above a whisper as she forces the words out. "I'm so sorry..."
Lucian hesitates...he knew he had a habit of messing with the watch, but sometimes he did it without realizing. "Oh... um.. sh...sure..."He hesitantly lifts the chain over his neck, only to hesitate again... opening it up and looking at the face as he says, "It... was my father's." He removes...something... that had been closed inside the watch, keeping his hand closed around the object, he wipes whatever dust had collected on the face of the watch off with his closed hand to hide his action. Then he shuts the watch and holds it out to Alliana. Part of him didn't want to let her look at it, as it was the only thing of any sort of value he owned--even if its value was only sentimental. He seriously doubts the pale elf will be able to use the watch to figure out anything about his past...but if it did, he could only hope that whatever she found didn't include his...condition.
Slight of hand (to keep Alliana from seeing him remove the object from the watch): 18
When Rontic screams, Lucian flinches and whirls around. He knows that Chara and Eithne wouldn't do anything to hurt the little man, so...what was he so worked up about? Was it the wolves? Or... He frowns, was he afraid of Chara? It seemed odd for him to give such a reaction now...
Not moving from his place, he says, "Is...is something wrong?"
Chara swallows nervously and does her best to explain the situation to Lucian.
"He didn't say anything when Eithne and I were talking to him... so I thought maybe he didn't understand common... I tried saying something in another language. And that was when he freaked out... I'm not sure why that scared him so much."
Eithne is increasingly perplexed by the bearded boy's behavior... and the jumble of assumptions that the voices make in her head only confuses her.
'Maybe he really is a child, changed in this aspect by some curse!' 'He must have been tortured by the Devil Stradh!' 'No, maybe he's a devil ... and that's why he was scared by Chara's words!'
However, considering that even in this situation he did not speak intelligibly, the savage stranger assumes that he cannot do so, so she sets aside the idea of a normal dialogue and simply tries to reassure him by showing him her open hands, without weapons, holding her body relaxed, so that he understands that she doesn't have to fear any attack: "We don't want to hurt you Rontic" she continues to speak to him in a calm tone, looking at him serenely with her azure eyes. "If you want, you can come back and sit here with us" she pats her hand where he was before and sits down again. "You have nothing to fear from any of us" she reassures him one last time, then she stops looking at him and goes back to keeping watch, petting Juhowly.
'If the bearded boy wants to sit down with us again, well...' thinks the last of the dusk elf maidens 'Otherwise, well, he will find a place where he thinks best. But if he's so inclined to be frightened,' she shudders for a moment 'I'm afraid he won't enjoy his stay here in Barovia very much!'
"Lenn," she finally adds "when you have a moment, there is something I'd like to tell you about... No hurry, keep speaking to our gests as long as you like; but once you are finished, would you be so kind to come to me a moment, before going to sleep? I'll be always here, keeping watch".
What remain of the Barovian elves live just outside the town of Vallaki. It is northwest of here. I warn you, they are a... humbled people. They exist, but their spirit was broken many years ago. Like everything in Barovia.
Upon hearing the halfling's scream, Nikolai whirls around, hands raised in an arcane gesture, ready to attack whatever threat has arisen. He looks around in confusion. "What is the matter??" he asks, bluntly.
Rontic, openly crying, rushes off to Roland and hides behind him. Roland pointedly ignores him. Nadezhdawalks over to Eithne and Chara.
Nikolaiand Lucian:
The anger in her voice barely contained, Allianasays, "Please ignore Roland's little pet. And hold your valuables close when you do. That little thief would rob you blind as soon as look at you. I don't understand why Roland keeps him around, he clearly finds him as pitiable as I do. But he made a promise once and so the little wretch is his squire or some nonsense."
Eithneand Chara:
"Hello," she says, "I don't think we've been formally introduced. My name is Nadezhda and I want to apologize for Rontic's behavior. I think someone must have been exceptionally cruel to him as a child, because he is so easily frightened. He cannot speak, as you might have guessed, and he is simple enough. But...um...," here her voice goes lower, "his current company also keeps him a bit on edge. Neither of his companions is particularly nice to him. But, I suppose, when you are engaged in a great cause, some of the niceties lose their currency." She shrugs. "Anyway, I noticed what wonderful little pups you have. So delightful! Would you mind if I played with one for a bit?"
"I think that being not nice to such unfortunate person is pure 4ssholeness," replies Eithne"no matter how great a cause is. Plus, for him, if he is so easily scared, Barovia will be like hell... But, oh, well" she sighs "there is not much I can do right now, I fear".
"Of course you can play with Juhowly!" the savage stranger happily shows the mysterious woman the puppy and where she likes to be petted the most, allowing them to have a nice time together.
"The way you speak and behave..." whispers the last of the dusk elf maidens after a while "With us, with the bearded child, with Juhowly... All this tells you are a good person. It is clear that you are in trouble. A false name... you stay with those stranger and not with locals... plus I'm pretty sure I've seen you before. I'll not ask you anything, because I think you have the right to keep the secrets you want. But remember that I and my companions would be glad to help you, if you choose to trust us. Should you ever decide to speak to me, I'll listen to you, ok? We could be more resourceful than we look".
Eithne smiles and winks, then stays near the woman, without insisting further, leaving up to her whether to speak or not.
