Taxidea, as you move towards the door you notice several bodies scattered about the floor. A hobgoblin reaches towards the orb, which is sitting in a stand on a table at the center of the room. To the left of the table you see an open portal of some sort, a large ring of arcane magic enclosing a scene from inside a dark castle. Goblins and hobgoblins are moving through the portal.
Can I cast Fireball centered on the portal without hitting myself or any allies?

Yes, Taxidea. If you position your fireball just right, it will explode within the portal, disrupting it and possibly killing the goblins and hobgoblins near it on both sides.
Three hobgoblins (including the one grabbing the orb) and two goblins make their DC 14 Dex saves and take only half damage from the fireball. Roll for damage, Taxidea.

No one is left alive on this side of the closed portal, but the hobgoblin with the orb was able to escape with it through the portal before it was disrupted.
“I second that.” Taxidea says. “Can’t believe that didn’t burn him to a crisp. Hey Prim, need more goblin skeletons? cuz’ there’s plenty now.”

Prims expression changes from a furious purse-lopped scowl to an evil smile.
"You're right Badger. But I'll have to change a spell slot. Don't let anyone bother me please. Meanwhile, examine the dead gobs. Perhaps their personal items & coinage will give a clue to where they're going. "
Prim starts reviewing her spellbook to memorize Animate Dead, and Arcane Recovery of spell slots from a short rest.
"It was horrible," the man gasps. "We were simply gazing into the orb, studying it, you know? Then this portal opens up." He motions to where the portal was. "Then dozens of goblins and hobgoblins come streaming out, like they were waiting for us. Oh, my gods," he gasps as he looks around at his fallen comrades. "They killed them all!" He begins to sob into his hands.
Prim opens her eyes as if she'd just remembered something. "Hey Badger! Check which of the dead humans are freshest, like less than a minute dead. Hey, survivor, sorry for your loss but which of these guys knew most about the orb? I MIGHT be able to help."

Prim knows the lightning bolt will not reflect off of a wooden door. The door is blasted open.

Orion cannot sense the orb.
Orion steps into the room where the portal had been, and casts about to see if senses any clues. Perception: 15, Investigation: 14
As Orion scans the room, he hears a groan and movement from one of the humans on the floor behind the table.
Orion goes behind the table and casts healing word (for 6} on the human before asking them, "What happened?"
