"Tyribig, the lieutenant of Lerooss, who is chief of all the families of Sparbierul. Excuse me, I will speak in Gnomish."
Narwilk begins a conversation with Tybirig and the other Gnomes at the table. As he points to you there appears to be some agitation. "Leroos is old an ill and Tyribig is leader for now. The news of Goblins is not welcome news, he has declared he will gather reinforcements for Sparharrow here and send messengers to the other clans. You are, of course, welcome to spend the night, as I have told them you travel on to the Library of Evrigeshee."
As he speaks you hear a grinding sound of stone on stone as the center of the hall starts to sink to become a circular staircase going down. "Come, down into the city."
The staircase goes down 50ft before opening into a mammoth cavern, more than 100 ft on each side. From the ceiling, hanging from long chains, are massive crystals giving off a soft, twilight light. The stalactites hanging from the ceiling cast long shadows over the cavern's floor. Carved into the sides of the cavern walls are stairways, doors and windows revealing that this is actually a very large town.
Narwilk and the others lead you large, wide door near the stairway. Inside, is a more appropriately sized room (for you) with a table, chairs and large couches decorated in bright blues, yellows and reds. "Soon the lights will dim for the night. This suite is reserved for Sylvan's and Traders when they visit."
As evening turns into night, the lanterns continue to dim until it is no brighter than starlit night.
The next morning you are awoken by a clatter outside which turns out to be a dozen, mature Gnomes in scale mail gathering gear and weapons including packs, heavy cloaks, shields and short spears. Narwilk is there and seems to be in an argument with Tybirig.
"I am not to return to Sparharrow. I am to either stay here, or I may accompany you to the Library."
"No, no, no trouble. I wish to return to Sparharrow, but Leroos has decided I must either stay for training or I may accompany you to the Library and the Citadel beyond to carry the news. It is doubtful their help will be needed, but it is best to let all know that Goblins are being seen again. Come, if you are ready. Though there are no roads, I have something of a map and with luck, we may find the Library tonight or tomorrow. I have something of a map," he frowns at the crudely drawn map. "We are here (yellow), and the Library and Citadel are here (red). What do you think?"
"I think... that it would be nice if we had some sort of a scale to know how much distance that represents. Is that just a flat plain between the dots?"asks Jordi.
"it's about 9 leagues, I am told. And the land between is rolling hills and mostly forest. There are some creeks we could follow, but they meander so much it would triple our travel.
Magnus fiddles with his amulet, trying to remember exactly what the old gnome said.
"Come on... does this thing have a remote control? Alexa! Turn on. Ah... open sesame. Open Says Me! What was it... Words roll into mind, "Modlaim me uwn ta valon".
As you say the words you feel a tingling in your fingertips from the amulet and then it lights up like a Coleman lantern, illuminating the 10' radius clearly and a further 10' in dim light.
Jordi suggests, "Well it seems like it would be quicker to descend out of the mountains and proceed in a straight line. Is there any reason not to do that?"
"There is no reason not to do that. With the sun at this time of year, if we keep the sun on our left eye, we should be headed directly to the Library."
The morning air is crisp and cold but a little warmer than the past few days. The sky is a dull, dismay, overcast gray and the smell of snow is in the air. The first couple of hours are slow and tricky as the pass descends rapidly over the first league. After that, it easy to make your way through the forest, and over the hills. Streams and creeks wander through the bare hills and woods, merging to become larger streams and creeks. Despite your best efforts, between the water and bare forest floor, your boots are soon coated in thick, clinging, red clay.
At what you think is a little afternoon, Narwilk picks a spot near a creek you have been crisscrossing for a spot of lunch. Fortunately, he proves adapt at starting a fire for warmth and making a bit of vegetable soup from the rations in his pack.
The sound of wood breaking alerts you to look up as you see a huge creature about 100 hundred feet away. It stands somewhere between 9 and 10 feet tall, with shaggy brown and black fur covering its torso. The arms and legs are an ugly brownish green, with beady eyes, an extended lower jaw with two tusks jutting up to complete the nightmarish look. The cracking sound came from the long, thick tree branch it is now using as a club.
Though it doesn't look exactly what you might have seen in movies (or visualized from books) those, and some instinct tell you it is an Ogre. They are big, bad tempered, evil natured, muscular brutes. They will eat anything they can catch, and don't always wait till it is dead before they start. In fact, they prefer if they are still squirming.
