After offering Dawnlord Menges my "thin explanation" for the absence of Forest and Quiqwin, I fear my future contains the cleaning of many chamber pots.
Simeon: The Dawnlord, not a terribly shrewd man, seems to take your words at face value. He does not seem pleased, however, that plans were changed without his permission.

I step forward in front of the group. ”Dawnlord Menges, sir, I understand this was unplanned, we all do. But you must understand, Dawnlord Wintermoon has became very ill prior to our departure. We’re not really sure of the cause of his illness, but rest seems to help. Dawnlord Wintermoon is in no condition to travel. We would have informed you, but there is no possible way that we could have sent word any faster with the plans set as they were. I hope you understand.”

I continue after the lie. “I don’t believe any of us saw this cult you speak of.” I turn around and glance at the others but for turning my attention back to Menges. “Is it run by dangerous people? Are they converting our devotees?” I ask timidly. “I can assure you, we are devoted to our goddess.”
I pretend to admire the architecture somewhere behind me so Menges and Atterly will not detect the grin that spreads across my face as I hear Korlan's well-crafted addendum to my own lie.
Korlan: Lord Atterley erupts in outrage at your statement, "You say he is ill? Preposterous!" Spittle flies from his lips as he splutters in your direction. "Surrounded by clerics of the faith, he remained ill and you simply left him there? Is your faith so small? How is it that you could not heal him?" Then his eyes grow wide and his fat face goes slack in fear. "You... you aren't saying that it's some sort of plague, are you? Dear goddess!" He clutches at his throat and backs away from all of you. (You do not recognize Lord Atterley's name)
Dawnlord Menges seems seriously concerned as well by your convincing words. Nodding his head at the fat official's panic, he says, "Perhaps we should send some of the Brothers to Second Sun to see if more experienced clerics may succeed in healing where these novices could not."
Quill: The more you see Lord Atterley and Dawnlord Menges speak, you start to notice little similarities, like the way they pronounce their words, lift their eyebrows, and even in the shape of their mouths. Although the older Lord Atterley has light brown hair and Menges is more of a blonde, you are convinced they are related. Perhaps father and son?
I look over at Atterly, “we did not leave him by himself of course. Our two missing members remained behind with him. We’re not totally sure of the cause of his illness . Of course we tried to help, but I think his age, by Dawnlord Wintermoon’s admittance, may be getting the best of him.” I turn my attention back to Menges. “As I said sir, he seems to be getting better with rest. He was going to make the trip out with the rest of our members when he felt better. Would be a shame for your member to make the trip only to pass them in the dark and find everyone gone upon their arrival.”
Demoiselle: Novice Emungo immediately shakes his head. "No, no. They seem harmless. They recently set up shop in Sir Gable's mansion across the square from the Basilica." Readjusting the heavy books in his arms he continues, "If you'd seen them, you'd know. They choose a 'unique' hair style, even the women." He looks kind of amused and disgusted all at once. "His grace is simply concerned because so many of the local citizens have begun to take an interest in their silly 'religion' which, of course, leads to lower attendance here."
Quill is visibly confused. He can't recall Lord Wintermoon being ill.
He commits the resemblances between Lord Atterly and Dawnlord Menges to memory as best he can.
Korlan
I turn around and look at Quill. I give him a stern look and open my eyes wide. I snap quickly at Quill, “do show respect while we are in the presence of such leaders of our faith dear boy.” I apologize for Quill insolence.
Korlan: Visibly relaxing, Lord Atterley straightens his rich brocaded tunic and ermine-lined robes. You notice a thick gold braid of office draped around his neck with a large onyx pendant in the center. Dawnlord Menges nods in understanding. "I see. You speak wisely." He turns to Novice Emungo. "Send these novices to the rectory and make sure they have tasks assigned to begin tomorrow." Smiling graciously at you as if he has given you some great boon he says, "You can have this afternoon free to get settled." Then he instructs Emungo to inform him as soon as Lord Wintermoon arrives or sends word. As you walk away, you overhear him telling the fat lord, "Well, at least there's no need to inform the Wickham council that we have an epidemic on our hands. Thank the goddess, for small mercies."
As our conversation ends (to be honest, my attention wandered away quickly--I didn't catch much of it), I walk over to where the scrap of paper has dropped. I pull out my waterskin and take a drink as I admire the stained glass windows. I clumsily drop the waterskin over top of the scrap of paper before picking both the waterskin and the scrap up. I then realize my companions are almost out the door, and run to catch up.

The note reads: I'm sorry. Change of plans. Can't meet you. Tonight, 10th bell, same place.
Everyone: Novice Emungo is heading to the library, which is through a door in the north transept. Where is everyone else going? It's about two hours before the noon meal.
”something isn’t right here. Don’t you think it’s odd Dawnlord Wintermoon never arrived? There is a new supposed cult in the area? And to top it off, the High Lord of this basilica is missing.” I look up around to check the surroundings. “Nothing personal Quill, but we cannot get on the wrong side of this right now.”
I leave Quill and catch up with Emungo before he leaves. “What was the Dawnlord referring to with the WIckham council? Do they have power of how the temple operates?”

It takes every ounce of will I have not to run to get that scrap of paper, but I manage to listen politely to Dawnlord Menges.

Demoiselle raised an eyebrow. "Cult? I hope we have not stepped into some war. That would be most distressing."

I whisper to Quill, "Says the fellow who just told a whopping lie to those same leaders." Again, I do what I can to hide my amusement.
Quill blushes deeply, shuffling his feet. His eyes widen at Simeon's words, and he opens his mouth for a second, then closes it.
And that's all I have to say about that.

Quill taps Korlan on the shoulder as they walk on.
"Why did you make me look like a fool in front of the Lords?" he asks in a hushed but angry tone as soon as the halfling looks up at him.
And that's all I have to say about that.

If I am able to read that discretely before rejoining the group, I would like to drop the paper back in place. If not, I will just keep it.
