Aedel it looks like the man has not eaten properly in weeks.
Carl as the stranger regains consciousness you offer food which he gladly snatches up and eats ravenously. "Water..." he begs looking between you all gratefully.
He looks then to you Diana, "We came here... to rescue the wizard Ferago... the fool tried to enter the mountain alone and... was lost."
He closes his eyes for a moment, "We were overwhelmed... I do not know how long we have been down here. Several of my Dwarven companions are already dead. They carried Garok off earlier to speak to the Hobgoblin ***** who runs this garrison."
Carl gives him some water from his water skin. “I have a feeling that we know the exact hobgoblin ***** you are talking about. I believe we found the body of .. Garok. We killed a couple of her bugbears, and wounded her significantly, but then she disappeared in a mist away from us before we could finish the job. Drink slowly, easy now. Do you have any idea… how long you’ve been here? Or what happened to Ferago?”
Carl is appraising the stranger as he coaxes information from him, trying to make sure that he is not being lied to and trying to determine the sanity of the stranger…

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
Carl you watch as the old knight drinks eagerly from the offered water-skin. He closes his eyes, pained by the news about his companion Garok and shakes his heads sadly.
"A pity you did not kill her." he says at last. His eyes keep darting to you Diana, as if he is unable to quite believe his eyes that you are here. When you asking how long he has been here Carl he shakes his head. You enquire after the wizard Ferago, as does Aedel. You sense no deception in his words, just fatigue and confusion.
Aedel you believe this man to be truthful and his surprise at seeing Diana here seems genuine. He responds to the questions about Ferago,
"No... Ferago is no Dwarf. My companions, five Dwarven brothers were captured with me. They have adventured with me for many years... I suspect that if Ferago lives he has been taken deeper into the mountain. He is a high elf Wizard of great intelligence, and it is said that he carried with him the secrets to defeating the Warlock himself. He carried them within a book sealed by strong Dwarven magic. It was our hope to find him or his book and complete his work..."
Carl looks again at the book and frustration evident in his voice, “Already tried, I can’t open it. Do you know how to open it?” He looks up at the knight and says “This Ferago fella can open it?”

"Honestly, might not be a bad idea to take a few hours to really recover," Neil says in response to Aedel. "This pit ain't the most comfy, but it looks fairly safe."

Unhappy that the market got rid of individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
Sinju sits down and looks at the knight in the eye, and says, "My good sir, do ou have any information on any threats that could await us further within the mountain?"
Ser Evandris looks between you Carl and Sinju and nods, "Yes.. yes we must find him, It is his book, he can open it."
The knight considers your words Diana and places a hand on your own, "I will accompany you for a time if you would have me. My gear is kept in an store room just ahead of us, the Hobgoblin took anything of great value, but some items might remain that may be of use. I am not sure how useful I will be, but I will do what I can. Such a strange twist of fate for you to save me all these years later."
He considers your final question Sinju and nods, "There is a portcullis up ahead that separates this outer garrison from the Mountain proper. It is operated by three levers and heavily trapped. I know the combination and can show you... beyond that we will see."
You all take a short rest.
Everyone make a constitution saving throw as the stench of damp and rot wafts out from the prison cell. The DC is only 5 but if you fail you may not roll hit dice for the rest as the stench is just too overpowering.
(Carl’s saving throw 14, in log) Short rest taken.
”We’d be glad to have you with us Sir Evandris, any help you can provide will be much appreciated. As we go through the mountain we will look for Ferago. Let’s find your gear …”
