as it begins to glow he grabs the Fire Breathing potion. "Ah'm ready if'n ye are, how long do ye need ta get where ya needta go?"
(OOC: Finley should definitely drink the Potion of Fire Breath before we return to Bavlorna's room. I forgot that the potion permits "3 uses within a 1 hour duration." I keep getting it confused with Dragon's Breath, which a kobold sorcerer in one of my other campaigns keeps using. 🐲🔥
It'll only take 1 round to get back to Bavlorna. Finley, Valrieth, and Octavian just stepped into the adjacent room for a couple of minutes "to discuss discussion whether to make a bargain" in private. Of course, that was a ruse: it was really so that Avery could take hispotion, Val could cast her spell, and they could find out whether Octavian could use his flute to help them in some way. Val doesn't feel bad about tricking Bavlorna after the hag was so wicked in what she did to Octavian. When you're dealing with a Fey like that, fair-play isn't really an option!)
"If yer 'avin' trouble carryin' 'em, ah can strap him carefully ta me back with me rope." Finley offers with a glance towards Val.
Valrieth struggles for a moment, trying to figure out how to pick up the doll, who suddenly seems to be made out of floppy limbs! She smiles at Finley's offer, "Oh! Yes, thank you, Finley! That's so clever!" She helps to keep Octavian in position while Finley has the rope attach him firmly to Finley's back. She makes sure that Octavian can see over Finley's shoulder so that he can see what's going on, but since he's tied to Finley's back Val hopes that it'll keep him out of harm's way.
Aoife assumes the others will return ready to fight, so she prepares herself to cast Hunter's Mark on Bavlorna and readies her bow for the first strike.
(OOC: Hm. It's pretty tight quarters. Aoife can certainly get to Bavlorna and attack in 1 round unless she's trying to ready an attack with her bow. If not, then attacking with her sword in he first round might be better even if she cannot use TWF because she's using her Bonus Action to cast a spell. Sword or bow gives her 2 attacks, and she's +3 more likely to hit with her sword. The sword is also a magical weapon, which could be important if the hag resists damage from mundane weapons.)
Aoife wasn't with Finley and Valrieth in the other room, but their plan is really similar to what they had previously discussed. The only difference is that Octavian may be playing his flute while we fight.
Finley will walk up to Bavlorna so that she's within the reach of his Thunder Gauntlets.
Finley can be in charge of answering Bavlorna, but he just needs to stall for a few second, so it doesn't really matter what he says. Finley could say that they don't think that they have any bargain to offer, or he could ask her probing questions. If you want to make her mad, you could ask about her sisters or mention that Granny Nightshade seems to be corresponding a lot with Endelyn Moongrave and complaining about someone. If nothing else, Finley could say that we'd like to hear Octavian's music one last time.)
While Finley talks to Bavlorna, Valrieth will try to find a good spot for the fight and make a protective circle with her Scatterleaf Tea.
As soon as Finley and Val are in position, Octavian will use his flute. If the flute is magical, Val assumes that Bavlorna will realize that they're acting against her as soon as he start playing, so we should start the attack immediately after he starts playing. Val asks Octavian to ensure that Finley, Val, Val's bestial spirit, and their friend Aoife (a half-orc) are not affected by his flute.
Before they leave B11, Val talks to the bestial spirit in Sylvan and explains its role in running widdershins around Bavlorna to trigger her allergy. As soon as it hears Octavian's music or Val's call, it's supposed to run up to Bavlorna and start doing that.
The big unknown is still what those 4 Lornlings can really do. Val doesn't have a lot of great AoE spells, and if she uses Spike Growth to try to keep the Lornlings from joining the fight, she'll have to drop concentration on the bestial spirit, which means that no one would be triggering Bavlorna's allergy. Val just hopes that they can all survive the Lornlings while they focus on taking down Bavlorna as quickly as they can.
Octavian is tied to Finley and you both head back into Bavlorna's Study.
Bavlorna is the ghost token in the middle with the little lornlings on the potion cabinet and broken dinnerware shelf.
Leaf - Val
Cog - Finley
Bow and Arrows - Aoife
They've made their decision, and now the time has finally come to repay this vile hag for the corruption and misery that she has spread through Hither. Valrieth feels nervous but focused. Assuming that Bavlorna lets Finley speak and doesn't attack them right away...
As Finley walks from the door toward Bavlorna to answer her, Valrieth keeps walking toward the door back to the hallway (B7) as though she's about to leave the room. She hopes that Bavlorna and her Lornlings just think that Val gave up and is going away. But Val stops south of the green sofa (diagonally SE of Aoife, next to the green sofa and the rectangular rug). Val hopes that the sofa gives her some cover from Bavlorna and the Lornings to the east in case they attack first. She hopes it also obscures what she's doing because once she gets there, Val sprinkles the Scatterleaf Tea in a circle on the ground around her. Then she takes her Star Chart in hand and hopes that she has read their Fates correctly. She turns to peer over the couch, watches Finley and Octavian, and waits for the "signal" to attack Bavlorna.
Movement: Move 20-ft, passing Finley and ending on the square just SE of Aoife. Action: Use an item - sprinkling the Scatterleaf Tea around her. Free Action: Taking out her Star Chart (spellcasting focus)
Finley does drink the Fire Breathing potion before they go back to the hag, "ah, so what kind o' deals do ye think, like one fer givin' our friend 'is old body back? Helpin' me find a piece o' star metal, aye? That would be ah nice one to do as well methinks." Finley tugs as his beard as Val moves into position, "Ooh, ah know a good one, why don't ye make a deal fer us ta not kick yer tail into th' next dimension like yer sister?" He cracks his knuckles and balls his hands up into fists.
Bonus Action: Defensive Field for 6 Temp HP.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Finley Stoneshaft, Dwarf Artificer - The Wild Beyond the Witchlight, Falkas, Half-Elf Drow Warlock - Keys of Empire
(Typo I meant Finley can try to escape using athletics or acrobatics on his turn DC 16. The Withering Ray is necrotic damage. Bavlorna shot the ray from range then moved in for the bite)
The lornlings are blurred so attacks against them is with disadvantage
(OOC: @weathervision - It doesn't look like you rolled the attacks against Valrieth with disadvantage. Based on the sequence, I think that Val made herself a circle of Scatterleaf Tea leaves before the fight started. IIRC, that's supposed to act like a Protection from Evil and Good, and I assume that Bavlorna and her Lornlings probably count as Fey creatures for the purposes of that effect.)
"That is rather insulting and now all of you will pay dearly for it" says Bavlorna
(OOC: Oof! Brutal first round. I'll wait for clarification on those attacks against Valrieth before I roll for her concentration check and figure out how she will respond this round.)
Valrieth is surprised at the speed of the Lornlings' onslaught. The first attack hits, but with the protection of the Scatterleaf Tea, she manages to fend off their other attacks.
Val - DC 10 CON saving throw: 16 to maintain concentration on Summon Beast
(OOC: @weathervision - OK. Valrieith maintained her concentration. What does Octavian do this round? Or will he only act after the party? I'm trying to figure out just how dire our current situation is, but it's difficult to tell since we're not sure what he can do with his flute music.)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(OOC: @Weathervision - Can Valrieth still take her reaction from before her turn this round? If so, she would use her Cosmic Omen, which currently indicates Woe:
Whenever a creature you can see within 30 feet of you is about to make an attack roll, a saving throw, or an ability check, you can use your reaction to roll a d6 and subtract the number rolled from the total.
Val would use her reaction to impose a 2 penalty on Bavlorna's bite attack, hopefully causing her to miss Finley and leaving him not grappled on his turn. Part of Val's action in round 1 will depend on whether she's able to use her Cosmic Omen for that.)
Valrieth was so busy fending off the flurry of attacks from the two Lornlings that she didn't see what happened to the others at first. She is relieved that only one of the knives made it past her cloak, shield, and armor, but as she glances around and sees a bloodied Aoife and Bavlorna holding onto Finley with her mouth (like some sort of giant frog!), she lets out a short, high-pitched, "Eek!" She calls out to Finley, "Finley, can you blast her off of you?"
Val had hoped that Octavian would start playing his song and then they would attack Bavlorna. But since Bavlorna and her Lornlings attacked first, Val realizes that they might not survive long enough against these lightning-fast fey to enact their original plan. Val decides that she needs to focus first on making sure that she and Aoife can survive long enough to help Finley. She needs to get rid of her attackers and then focus on healing her friends more than doing damage to Bavlorna. Val calls out to her summoned beast in Sylvan: "Help! Save me from these two!"
Val casts a cantrip at one of the two Lornlings in front of her (the one toward the east). Then, in preparation to heal her friends, she takes on the Chalice Starry Form. Motes of light, like twinkling stars, dot her body, and her large eyes seem to glow white. A cool, soothing starlight emanates from her (bright light for 10-ft, dim light out to 20-ft). She silently prays that whatever Octavian's flute does will have a big impact on their enemies.
Movement: None. Locked in melee with the Lornlings. Action: Cast spell Frostbite against the (eastern) Lornling who attacked her. That Lornling must make a DC 15 CON save or take damage: 8 (cold) If it fails its saving throw, it also has disadvantage on the next weapon attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn. Bonus Action: expend a use of her Wild Shape feature to take on a the Chalice starry form. Free Action: Talking
Reaction: If Finley or Octavian forces Bavlorna to make a saving throw, Val will use her reaction to use her Cosmic Omen, which currently indicates Woe. to impose a penalty on Bavlorna's saving throw.
The forest green fox (bestial spirit) acts on Val's turn immediately after she acts. Hearing Val, it tries to race toward her and kill one of the Lornlings that's attacking her. As it moves through the starlight emanating from Val, its dark green fur seems to glitter with the reflected light.
Bestial Spirit, AC: 13, HP: 30 Movement: Use 15-ft of movement to go from the doorway of B11, into the room B10, past Finley, and then to the square 1-south and 1-east of Val. (FYI - That takes it from adjacent to Bavlorna to out of Bavlorna's reach, but I don't know whether Bavlorna can make an opportunity attack while she's got Finley in her mouth.) While it cannot run around Bavlorna this round, after its attack the bestial spirit uses the rest of its movement to run enthusiastically in tight circles counter-clockwise (not leaving its square) to show that it knows what it's supposed to do next. Action: Attack the (East) Lornling who's fighting Val, or if Val killed that one with her cantrip, attack the other Lornling that was attacking Val. Attack: bite/gore: 13, Damage: 7 (piercing) Since Val is within 5-ft of the Lornling, the bestial spirit gets advantage from Pack Tactics. That should cancel out the disadvantage from the Lornling's speed, so I just made a straight attack roll here.
Finley reels a bit from the attack(s), but re-engages the shields around his armor and then casts Cure Wounds on himself. (ooc: I'll be doing this regardless if I get the HP back for the bite attack, missing if Val can use Cosmic Omen.)
Action: Cast Cure Wounds for 24 Healing making him to 56/57 Bonus: Defensive Field
Bite Attack: 18 Damage: 15 On hit Finley is grappled where he can try to escape on her turn Athletics DC 16
(OOC: I just wanted to make sure that you were aware that Finley was bitten and grappled before you lock in his action for round 1. Valrieth could not use her Cosmic Omen to prevent that first bite: she was too surprised by the sudden attacks. Therefore, Finley was hit with both Bavlorna's withering ray and her bite.
Given the swampy realm, I'm guessing that Bavlorna's bite is something like that of a a Giant Toad or a Crocodile. That is, unless Finley does something to escape Bavlorna on his turn, he'll presumably start round 2 still grappled and also restrained. Is Mirror Image even effective if you're already grappled by your opponent? Maybe continuing to bite him would count as an attack that "does not rely on sight"? I also wouldn't be surprised to discover that a powerful fey, like a hag, is able to perceive illusions as false.)

No to the use of the reaction before Val's turn. If intended to be used, then it should have been mentioned before Finley kicked off the fight.
