Octavian lifts the drape and there is a loud squawk from a taxidermized bird.
Valrieth jumps at the sound and glances back at the door. She says, "Cover it back up. Cover it up." She doesn't want to draw any attention to their nighttime exploration of these other rooms.
When the drape fall there are a few more muffled squawks, but the bird soon goes silent.
Valrieth feels like they have a good sense of what's in this room. She suspects that there might be more to discover in this room or buried in the straw, but after all of the noise from the taxidermized bird, she's too worried about Bavlorna to stay in this room. And she especially doesn't like being in a room with only one exit.
Val says, "Shall we check the other rooms off of the kitchen before we cause more noise and attract Bavlorna's attention?"
If Finley and Octavian agrees, she'll lead them back into B10 and then through the door to the south (into B13). She would like to see what's behind the two other doors that they didn't check when they were in the kitchen earlier.
"Ah doubt anything is in there, but we really should just in case there might be somethin' hidden around, but ah think we're gonna have ta be doing more tasks fer her to get all tha' we need." Finley says, motioning forward and follows along.

Continuing with their clockwise search of Bavlorna's hut, Valrieth moves to the door (to B12) in the north wall on their left. She listens at the door and checks it for traps as usual. (Perception18) If it seems OK, she'll step back and cast produce flame so that she has a light (in case it's dark) and a weapon (in case something attacks them). Then she asks Octavian to open the door and follows him in with Finley.

(OOC: I forgot to reply to this.)
"Yeah," Valrieth says glumly. "You're probably right." She doesn't say it out loud, but she's worried about what kind of bargain that would require. Even if Bavlorna upholds her end of a bargain, like she did with Clapperclaw's head, what would the hag demand for a still-beating heart?
As they move into the kitchen, Val tries to sound optimistic. "But we'll worry about that tomorrow," she says. She stifles another yawn and says, "Let's just check these last two rooms and get some sleep."
This room is freezing. Chunks of frozen meat dangle from the ceiling on hooks and chains. Along the walls, more meat is stacked in piles on metal racks.
A small, frost-covered wooden coffer sits in the middle of the floor. The cold seems to be radiating from it.
Valrieth enters the room but looks a little queasy at the sight. At least the cold makes the smell less unpleasant than the taxidermy room downstairs. After a quick glance around the room, Val keeps her eyes looking at the floor as much as she can and is happy to focus on the frost-covered coffer.
Val examines the coffer without touching it to see whether there's a lock or any obvious trap. Is it just in the center of the room to keep the whole room cold? Or is it here to tempt them to touch it and end up trapped and frozen? Since Finley's magic protects him from elemental damage, Val asks him, "Finley, can you open this coffer?", as she walks back to stand in the doorway back into the kitchen. She wants to be there to prevent the door from swinging shut and locking them in the freezer.
"Hmm, ah can give it a shot." Finley says, moving into open the freezing box, "ye think that it's keeping all the meat good in 'ere or what? Either way do ye think that there's a way to help our certain friend out in this place?"
(He's gonna check to see if it's locked or trapped, Investigation: 10. If it's locked he'll try to lockpick it, but if it's trapped he'll leave it alone.
Lockpick: 16)

Valrieth isn't sure: "I hope that's all it is. It seems magical, so be careful. Octavian, be ready when he opens it in case something pops out of the coffer."
While Finley examines the coffer, Val answers his other question: "No--at least, not that I've seen so far. I'd really like to get another look at the closet upstairs, but let's worry about that tomorrow. To help our friend, we need to get to Thither and beyond, but don't try to rush Fate, Finley. Our Path may lead to Thither, but it brought us to Octavian first. And just in time, too! Octavian agreed to help us just before Gan-Re was sent back to Faerun--may the wind ever lift him in flight! We agreed to help Octavian find his missing heart, and it's the least we can do after he helped us defeat that blob downstairs and clean Bavlorna's pool. I'm just sure that Bavlorna keeps it somewhere in this house since she seems to keep everything in this house."
"Ah have pitons, hammer, some smithy tools, do ye think there's somethin' worthwhile in there? If we dig inta it, we won't be able ta lie our way outta it if th' lady o' th' house finds th' evidence here." Finley says as he puts a hand on a hammer at his belt. "Ah dunnae want ta ruin our chance to get what we came for."

Valrieth agrees: "No, definitely don't break into it!"She looks alarmed at the thought. "Especially not right before we go to sleep. If the lid is just frozen shut, Octavian could try to yank it open, but only do it if you can open it without damaging the chest. That way, we can just close it again once we see what's inside."
Val chews her lip in thought. She says, "Or...we know about this frozen chest and the locked cabinet in her sitting room. We could just leave it for now and try to sneak back in here tomorrow when we're better rested."
(OOC: FYI - it looks like Octavian has a crowbar.)
"Well, stables or somethin' darker." Finley adds as he follows her in, "Maybe there's an inscription on th' pedestals?"
He cracks his knuckles, a little electricity arcs across them, getting himself ready as well.

Which door do you wish to check out first?
B15 or B12
(B12)

There are no traps and the door opens

Finley is unable to determine if the coffer is trapped. There is no lock and there is a thick layer of frost covering the coffer.
Can he just open the lid then?
Or is the coffer frozen shut?
If it's frozen shut, Valrieth asks, "Can you try to pry it open with something?"
It is frozen shut. Now how do you plan to open it.
Valrieth checks her backpack. She asks, "Do either of you have a crowbar or something that you can use to pry it open?" (Val does not.)
