Erxuk scratches between the small horns on his head. "Uh... A few... few months ago? Six? There were signs but at the time only rats were dying. She got a sewer worker about a month back. She may have even gotten some kobolds, too..." He trails off, a contemplating look on his face. "It was about four months ago Skreeva brought Highness to us. Now she wants us to help her build a treasure hoard and has kobolds risk their safety to rob houses in Emon. Sometimes she goes up with a small group and kills wealthy people with lots of trinkets. Some kobolds are devoted to her, like Skreeva, but most of us hate her."
"A dragon gathering a hoard of treasure, and a red one at that. Somethings never change." Shaw said with a heavy sigh. "My magics will be less effective against one such as this, unfortunately we share the same elemental lineage. However, I will be able to offer some assistance." Shaw turns to the group. "Let's not waste time, the longer we wait the more of a chance they have to kill another citizen. Hopefully, the God's look on us brightly this day." Shaw muses in a soft tone.
Krenak shook his head as he relayed everything he heard to the others. "I don't like this," he said quietly. "A red dragon wyrmling doesn't just pop up in the sewers. I almost want to say that its some spawn of the Cinderking, but the timing doesn't feel right. And the fact that she has gems embedded into her body has me worried..."
"We can take you to Highness' lair safely whenever you are ready, kobold-friends," Erxuk says in draconic with a confident smile on his face, "If we work together, we can't fail."
"I don't see how we're going to get any more prepared than we already are." Veldan rested his hands on his hips. "Either we kill this wyrmling ourselves and take first pick of the hoard, or cede that right and fetch some assistance from the local guard?" He suggested, glancing around to his makeshift companions.
"Keep in mind that the good soldiers of Emon might not be so keen on allowing these kobolds to live while the dragon remains a threat."
"Quite right Veldan we are as prepared as we will ever be. There is no guarantee the wyrmling would remain within our reach if we delayed to gather reinforcements." Shaw said in reply to the wizard. He silently recited a prayer in his head while thinking, if his magic would be enough to overcome this foe.
"Yes! Highness won't be hurting our people or yours after today!" Erxuk cheers in draconic to the party and the small group of kobold warriors (no pun intended) that have gathered around him. "We can't take all our fighters; some must stay back and protect the sick, old, and young. But these four and I will come with us. It seems you're ready; we'll leave now!"
He looks to the non-scaled members of the party and says, "Wes goes fights Highness now. Comes, comes!"
The kobolds lead you away from the other cave entrance you saw on the other side when you came down here an hour ago and moves some piles of various junk to reveal another passageway. It's actually wider than the one you came down in, but about the same size in height. Upon completely revealing it, the three begin leading the way and Erxuk turns. "No traps here, big mans. This bes safe way to Highness. Kobolds uses, Highness uses, but none comes back here today. Wes goes sir-prizes thems!"
The kobold inventor adjusts his backpack slightly, grabs a small metallic sphere from the junk pile, puts it in a belt pouch on his waist, and moves along, motioning for you to follow.
Tal had been leaning against the entrance to the alcove brooding. He listened to the two lizardfolk talking back and forth in their native tongue and challenged himself to follow along without them noticing his interest. What he heard didn't sound good but hey the sooner they died or killed this wyrmling the sooner they would get out of the sewers.
He pondered the first thing he'd do with that gold when he got it, a hot meal, maybe a bath house excursion, or some new armor! He looked down upon his faded leathers and ragged and torn cloak with disdain and shot a mournful look at Veldan's ensemble. What he wouldn't give for the comforts of the wilds right now. His mind drifted to the many nights he had spent staring out the window at his parents estate whilst everyone meditated he would watch the moon crest over Lake Ywnnlas and watch the mirrored reflection in the cool still waters.
Once everyone got up and began moving to leave he shook off the memories, reminding himself that this was in no way home for him. Scrambling to catch up to the group he stretched his stiff limbs, grabbed his bow and tried to focus on the trials that await beyond the kobold cavern.
As you all press on further into the tunnel, Veldan's owl lands on the head of one of the kobolds leading the way. It almost panics, but Erxuk seems to comfort him enough that it will let the familiar stay put. The light of Shaw's produce flame spell lights the way enough that those unable to see in the dark can at least see what is in front of them and the Erxuk and the kobold scouts are barely out of sight.
The tunnel is rather straight, but you can feel yourself moving downward slightly. The stone around you appears recently dug, at least a few months old. Some makeshift support columns hold the ceiling up rather well. You have to hand it to these kobolds, they really do know how to dig a good tunnel. It's all rather unchanging, but you can feel the temperature rising slightly the further down you go. You've walked for about five or six minutes before some dim light begins to glow in Twilight's field of vision. Erxuk gives a signal to snuff out the light. Shaw does so, and you can soon see why - the other side of the cave is near. Erxuk motions for you all to approach quietly. As you get closer, you hear faint voices speaking in draconic.
"... would be dangerous to send another party to the surface for another robbery, Highness," croaks a high, nasally voice.
"That matters not. This hoard is pitiful. How can I control Emon when I can't even get a bigger hoard? You may be my adviser, but that doesn't mean I have to listen to you. Send your people up again or I'll go myself," a smooth and youthful, yet sinister and almost... distorted, voice replies. Certainly not the sound of a kobold.
"No, Highness, you already went up today. I'll send some of Erxuk's people. If the Emonians see you-"
"Shut up, Skreeva. I smell something," the distorted voice announces. You can hear the sound of intent sniffing.
"I smell... Erxuk's people. And Erxuk. What could they want?"
"They have intruders with them," snarls the twisted voice. "Traitors or cowards, I will kill them to the last. With me, weaklings!"
Erxuk swears in draconic then turns and shouts, "Goes, big mans, kills Highness! Wes helps!"
You all rush into the room and see a cavern about 30 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 15 feet high. It appears semi-natural, but two oblong columns of makeshift stone hold up the ceiling on the other side. Some torches burn, giving this a coverage of dim light. A hole rests in the center of the ceiling, just like Erxuk said. Another tunnel opening stands near the center-left of the room. On the other side of the cavern, about 25 feet ahead of you, four regular-looking red kobolds in tattered crimson shirts and brown loin cloths stand before the columns and they have turned with daggers and slings out to face you. A smaller kobold with slightly better clothing holding a stone staff conjures some fire in the palm of their claw - this must be Skreeva.
In between the columns is a small pile of gold, jewelry, trinkets, and more treasure. Atop it is a dragon the size of a cow with scarlet scales, twin horns curling backwards over its, and frills on the sides of its head and running down its long neck, leathery wings outstretched - Highness really is a red dragon wyrmling... But the small crystals embedded into its chest and its glaring eyes of fiery orange and white give you pause. You realize that this dragon looks almost identical to Thordak the Cinderking's reported appearance.
The stakes of this mission just went through the roof.
Erxuk's four kobold companions give a shout as they swing their small leather slings over their heads, loosing the stones inside them toward their brethren across the cavern. One misses his target, but the other three find purchase. With a sickening succession of cracks, stones smash into the heads of two enemy kobolds and they collapse immediately. A third is struck in the chest, but is still standing.
Darting off to the side as the kobolds sprang out and volleyed a spray of stones, Veldan put his back against the rock wall and scanned the room... his gaze locking not on the dragon, but the kobold flicking fire between its fingers. That's the one.
"Last thing we need is your petty little tricks, mongrel." He muttered, left hand making precise motions as it raised. The ring on his index finger flashed one color after another as refracted light collected onto the stone, until finally stopping at green.
Aiming his ring, he closed one eye before releasing a stream of neon-green energy, cutting across the sorcerers' chest and leaving a streak of dissolved matter where it struck.
Seeing his fears come to life caused Krenak's heart to flutter for a moment before a holy rage flooded his body with adrenaline. "Foul spawn of Thordak, your terror stops here!" he yelled out before rushing forward. Halbard raised high, his fury threw his aim as the blade lashed towards the dragon, only to skitter across the ree scales.
The action had started quickly, just as he rushed into the room stones had started too fly. Shaw saw a flash of green arcane magic and Krenak rushing forward. Shaw's adrenaline was pumping in his veins, he reached deep down into himself to gather his divine energies. He was not practiced at this particular spell, he preferred flames to radiant light. Shaw raised his fingers, "I need to end this fight quickly" he thought.
His skin went from an ashen charcoal to a swirl of orange and red, he could feel the flames rise from his hair. He snapped his fingers and with a primordial phrase under his breath, two radiant bolts shot forth, one towards the wyrmling and one towards the kobold sorcerer. Both bolts widely missed their targets crashing into the ceiling, even when Shaw tried to redirect the magic mid flight.
"Damned to the abyss!" Shaw growled. He thought himself an idiot, using unpracticed spells when lives were on the line. He hoped his mistake did not cost them.
Erxuk pulls a tightly-wrapped bag from his pack, shakes it vigorously, loosens the knot keeping it shut, and tosses it at the line of kobolds remaining on Highness' side of the cave. It lands and opens as a small swarm of buzzing wasps spill out in an angry stream. He cackles with his fellows at the display.
Skreeva cries out in agony as the acidic energy of Veldan's spell melts her flesh. Wincing through the pain, she glares at the elf that caused her such pain. Moving to get a better view at the wizard, she summons three crackling motes of fire that surround her staff.
"You burn me, I burn you, big man!" She screams in Common as she hurls all three scorching rays at Veldan with righteous fury. Veldan quickly rolls out of the way of two of the flaming attacks, but as he lifts his head one is headed right for him. He throws up his hands and shouts some arcane words as the burning energy smashes into an invisible wall of force and dissipates, leaving the the bladesinger unharmed. Skreeva yells and stamps her feet in great anger.
Rushing into the room Tal sees the chaos ensuing as rocks are flung across the room and Krenek rushes Highness. Fumbling for a moment Tal's eyes fall on Veldan being attacked by Skreeva. The murder in her eyes was all he needed. He grabbed an arrow from his quiver and aimed directly at her now acid burnt face. Something clicked in his mind, this was it, the hunter and the hunted. He mentally called up images of the first rabit he had slain, then his first Deer, and now this would be his first Kobold. Taking a deep breath his gaze flashed green as he screamed out in draconic with a magically enhanced voice "Skreeva! Your life ends...NOW!" With the last word he loosed the arrow across the field striking the Kobold square in the chest. Seemingly to only a minor effect but then the flash of green exploded off the arrow inflicting a seeping wound of Nature Energy. The mark of the hunter.
With Skreeva down his gaze fixed on his next target, her Highness.
Highness opens their gaping maw and lets out a twisted, warbling scream that chills you all to your core. As it echoes through the tunnel complex, the wyrmling beats its wings and flies ten feet above the ground toward the group of kobolds gathered near the entrance with Wrath and Shawsten. Krenak takes a mighty swing and cuts a gash into Highness' underbelly, but they still proceed. Erxuk and his kobolds silence their celebration of Skreeva's death as they witness the wrath present in the dragon's eyes.
"Burn, traitors!" Highness exclaims in draconic as the crystals on their chest glow white hot and a gout of flame is expelled from the creature's maw. Erxuk and Shaw manage to dive out of death's way at the last moment, leaving the inventor seriously singed but the fire genasi just a little burnt. Erxuk looks back in horror as his kobolds have been reduced to four small piles of charred bone. Razz's skin is charred and blackened and he almost can't feel the pain in his incinerated nerves, but somehow the barbarian's will and fury keeps him alive.
Highness laughs as they turn around and fly back to their hoard to reengage Krenak, their back against the wall."Come, silver one. More of my servants will be here soon. Die by my hand!" Highness shouts in draconic. The two remaining kobolds draw their daggers and get on either side of Krenak, leaping onto the dragonborn and stabbing him with their daggers, but this zealot's rage burns hotter than the fires of any dragon and the new wounds hardly phase him. He brushes off the kobolds as they prepare to defend their master from further attack.
Charred skin cracks, as Razz opens his eyes, the usually prominent red irises merging with his bloodshot eyes as he goes into a Rage. Charging straight at the two remaining Kobolds, Razz swings his greatsword at a horizontal arc, however due to his injuries the swing was a little slow, only barely cutting into 1 of them as they both moved out of the way.
Spotting the fiery orbs being conjured by the little sorcerer, Veldan recognized the spell right away and had begun muttering an incantation even as he rolled forward. Popping beneath two of them, the half-elf flourished a hand as he rose, conjuring a shimmering shield that deflected the third blast off towards the rocky wall.
"You couldn't burn a campfire!" He jeered, running a hand to smooth the hair that had fallen out of place during the roll. He wasn't sure if the little thing even heard him, however, as Tal was by him just a moment later and loosed a vicious arrow that put the miserable thing down. With a raised brow, he gave the ranger a slight nod.
"A fair shot." He offered in Elvish. But there wasn't much time to celebrate, as the flash of bursting flame caught both their attentions, bringing their eyes square on Highness. Without a word, Twilight bristled before launching off Veldan's shoulder in a whirlwind of screeching feathers, flying directly in front of Highness' face and blocking her vision with a spread of flapping wings.
The swarm of wasps from Erxuk's bag envelopes the last kobold fighting for Highness. It flails around trying to swat them away, but there are just too many. It begins writhing on the floor in agony as the insects cover it with stings and bites until it ceases moving. The swarm hovers over the kobold's corpse, looking for something else to take their rage out on.
